10: Easy one to talk to
Picture of Khalid and Oliver ^_^
Chapter 10 - Easy one to talk to.
Oliver
I woke up to a bright Tuesday morning, another day of school. I was able to start little conversations with more people apart from Shirley, who used to be the only one I talked to. Most of these people were girls since it took so much effort to hold a conversation with a boy, so I completely avoided it. I was already putting all my birr into school work, I refused to bother myself with the strive to make new friends.
However, I was able to make just one male friend through Shirley, his name was Kevin he was also in the same department with the both of us. He seemed really gentle and cool, you could classify him as your regular kind of guy just like me, if you think I'm regular, only I could tell he was straight and maybe stretched far too thin by his religious beliefs to bend.
Not that I was attracted to him, I just love to analyse people but I don't let it cloud my judgement. People could be far different from what you perceive them to be, just like Khalid. I once thought he was a regular clichéd jock but it appears he's very different from that.
Despite being an active church goer Kevin never judged or cautioned us whenever we used cuss words, he wasn't a fervently religious person neither was he a hypocrite because he sometimes used these cuss words.
He didn't look so much older than me so I imagined he was around my age, I didn't want to ask. Going around asking every single person I come across their age is a habit I didn't want to cultivate in the university. It didn't just make me a poke noser, it also made me come off as a very insensitive person which truly I wasn't, just me being unnecessarily inquisitive and I also knew this could maybe get a broken nose and swollen purple eyes.
I don't appreciate either of those things.
We sat through the only lecture we had on Tuesdays it was quite fun, the professor had fun unique ways of brightening up everyone's mood and carrying the whole class along. Tuesdays automatically became my best days of the week because of him.
Shirley and Kevin both stayed on campus, I bid them goodbye as we went our separate ways after we had exited the heart of the school together. I had absolutely no idea what Chris's schedule was like and I didn't bother to find out, I wasn't clingy neither was I some kind of social leech who doesn't know when to let go, I didn't want to make him or anyone I might come across during my years in the university to think that.
I must admit to myself I was a social leech back in highschool, the only one I held on to was Jessica this was because I was way too scared to make new friends and I felt almost everyone disliked me. This extremely false belief of mine made me lose so many potential friends as they just couldn't handle my egregious paranoia.
Luckily for me I was able to retain my friendship with Jess after surviving so many ups and downs, I had a feeling since we've come this far there's not end to it. Mason stuck around as well even after being aware of how I can be, this made me more befuddled than happy, if I'm being honest to myself.
I headed straight to my dorm room from school, as I remembered the appointment I had with Mako today. I intended to refresh and get a little rest before going, besides it was still a bit early to go now.
When I got to my floor I found Khalid sitting at the balcony, I intended to say a simple 'Hi' and be on my way. Now this wasn't because I was in a bad mood or uninterested in a conversation with Khalid, actually it was the opposite. I was a little bit too interested in a conversation with him and I felt myself getting so attached to this fine young man.
Just the thought of it gave me cold feet as I was more afraid of the way I felt whenever I saw him around or whenever he flashes me that smile of his that brightens up the room. He was a really friendly person and that was probably the reason he'd been nothing but kind to me.
Even after convincing myself that this was the case, I couldn't help but hope it was a lot more than friendliness.
"Oliver."
Blimey.
Very unfortunately for me he saw me and he wasn't contended with the simple 'Hi' I said to him as I walked by, he put his hand over my shoulder and started walking with me to my room.
"Sup Khalid, how're you doing today?" I smiled, this wasn't a feigned or forced smile I was genuinely pleased to be held by him, and to know that he really felt like talking to me made me beam a lot wider.
And this very feeling was exactly what I was terrified of.
"I'm as good as good," he said smiling down at me. I could feel his words hit me through his warm breath which grazed the side of my ear he faced, stretching down to my neck making goosebumps appear as I shivered unnoticeably.
I felt little while being held against him. He was over a foot taller than I was and he smelt like fruits, lots of fruits, I couldn't even place my hand on which one.
"You're quite a serious student, always going to class. I skipped lectures today, you know," he said with a nonchalant look on his face as he withdrew his arm from my shoulder.
We had gotten to my door so he released my shoulder and stepped back a little, letting me search my bag for my keys.
I widened my eyes at him, feeling irked by his tone.
Did he really?
"School just resumed Khalid! We're freshmen, you can't be skipping classes already," I scolded as I unlocked my door and stepped aside, motioning for him to get in.
He stood outside for a while scanning my door before he entered and I followed suite, I wasn't even sure if he wanted to enter until I told him to. I just keep making things a lot more difficult for myself.
"Yeah, I know, I know," he flopped on my bed letting out a sigh.
My mind instantly wondered to what he said about my bed the last time; about it being soft and hard at the same time. I smiled to myself as I got dirty thoughts jumping in rapidly.
Oliver, you shameless lech.
He continued, "one of them was a general studies course and the other one isn't too difficult to understand. I've even made notes on it myself," he sighed again. Rolling to his side to watch me as I went about my room kicking off my shoes, putting down my bag and settling in.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket and kept it on my table with my keys, I would've love to strip down to my briefs and even then remove them and put on something less tight and comfortable around my area, but Khalid was right here in front of me. There was definitely no way I could do that, unless in the bathroom.
I didn't want to change anyway, I didn't trust loose boxers to hide the protrusion in my crotch that came up once in a while, everytime I paid close attention to Khalid.
I swear if I could, I would stop myself from feeling and being this way, I was extremely sensitive to almost everything and the littlest of things excite me.
I was going to visit Mako soon anyway so there was no need to take my clothes off, I walked over to my fridge and retrieved two cans of Sprite and a left over burger. I gave Khalid a can of Sprite, he stood up uttering thank you as he took it from me. I then walked over to my table and sat on my reading chair.
Taking a bite out of my burger, I watched as Khalid opened the can and gulped down the Sprite so... manlike. Even the movement of his Adam's apple made me have thoughts coming in and out of my head.
I shook my head trying to get these dirty thoughts out of my head before taking a sip from my drink, I felt a lot better as I savoured the flavour before swallowing, letting the cold drink go down my throat and into my stomach, calming me.
"You know you've to build up your CGP-" before I could finish he cut me off which made me wonder if I'd said something offensive.
"Yes yes CGPA, yes Olly I know trust me, you're not the first person to tell me that." He replied with a fake laugh which failed to hide the sadness he tried to conceal behind that laughter, I could still see it in his eyes and his voice got a bit shaky, that was so unlike him.
Nodding to myself not wanting to go into a topic he probably doesn't want to delve into.
"Well okay, I'm just saying because that's exactly what I've been told multiple times as well" I replied as I continued to eat what I had in my hands.
"Thanks" he muttered to his drink playing with the top, the sadness still hinted in his eyes. He looked up at me with a smile trying to assure me that everything was fine before he continued "I hope you don't have anybody shoving academics down your throat" he couldn't maintain the fake smile anymore, his face was overcome by a gloomy look, as faced his drink and continued to trace his finger around the top.
I had absolutely no idea why he felt this way, I truly wanted to know but I was too scared of what his reaction might be if I eventually asked him, so I just decided against poking.
I did want to go on with the conversation, maybe he would explain the situation at some point, so I replied.
"Well not really I just feel obligated to get good grades, almost perfect grades if I can so my dad won't think so lowly of me" I spoke after swallowing. I took another sip before continuing "I don't even know why I bother to impress him he doesn't know anything about me, and he doesn't care all he wants to know about are my grades and how Oliver is doing at school, always asking my mum about by achievements." I spoke mimicking my dad and putting extra stress on the last word. There really wasn't that much of a Father-Son bond between my father and I.
I surprised myself with how much I said, I wasn't supposed to let him know this much but it still felt completely normal to vent to him.
He is good listener I suppose that's why?
He hummed signaling he heard every word I said.
He still had that really long face on as he continued to play with the can, this really pricked at my inquisitiveness. I became really interested to find out why, and I'd basically just rambled to him about my shitty relationship with my father, it'd be only fair if he told me a bit about himself.
I searched my head for the least offensive way to put the question, finally settling on throwing his question back at him.
I swallowed and rinsed my mouth with a sip of my drink before clearing my voice.
"What about you? Is anyone shoving academics down your throat?" I asked paying close attention to his facial expression to find out just how he would react to the question.
He looked up at me with a blank face.
"My eldest sister" he answered quickly without hesitation of any kind, it appeared he felt okay telling me about it.
I frowned my face in confusion, I couldn't surmise why his sister would pressure him about his studies, I mean isn't she supposed to be going through the same academics struggles as him?
As if hearing my thoughts he looked back down at his drink and continued with an explanation.
"She's married, I've two lovely nephews and she's over twelve years older than I am" he finished, just staring at the can in his hand with a hollow expression.
I adjusted where I sat, feeling uneasy, mostly because I had absolutely nothing to say. I give good advice sometimes but I've never been in a situation like this, so what he just told me was totally beyond my area of what I may call expertise?.
I just think I've a deep understanding of live issues, common live issues.
"Oh" I spoke out, indicating how nonplussed I was.
"Did I mention she's a doctor?" He said with a proud tone as he looked up at me with a smile on his face.
I could tell it wasn't fake or forced, he truly was happy to boast about his sister being a doctor.
I made an 'O' shape with my mouth, before smiling back at him.
"Well that explains a lot," I said with a giggle, "but you do want to be in school right?" I asked seriously
"Yes I do, I do want to be in school but I don't want to be forced to be in school, it'll just make me hate it." He replied before finishing his drink with one last big swig, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
I particularly understood how he felt, I'm sure everyone would. I mean we all love school, even if we don't we still know that we have to put in our best. No one has to constantly remind us how bad we're doing at a subject or our general shortcomings in our education.
"I dig how you're feeling, to be frank with you" I said nodding my head to show just how much I could relate.
"Mhmm," he hummed then continued, "and she basically takes care of me because my mum is retired, well alongside my brother he's the fun in my life. Most of the things I've are hand me downs from him; my car, my PS4, some expensive wrist watches and shoes I can't imagine myself spending my money on, just so many." He continued to explain.
I think I like his brother more than his sister, and this is not because of my sexuality or anything.
Don't be stupid Oliver.
I mentally cautioned myself.
"Your brother seems really nice" I voiced out my thoughts.
"He is!" He said with so much happiness "I had a job in Dubai before I came down here, I was a hotel valet and he helped me secure that job, said I needed to make some money for myself before moving to Tadelia for my education, and I did. I made quite an amount, I'm just so grateful to have him." He sounded really happy talking about his brother.
I didn't even try to hide the huge grin I had on my face as he talked about his close relationship with his brother.
It just occurred to me that we'd basically opened up to each other about certain things concerning our families, well mostly him because there was nothing much to say about my family, we were basic and happy, well most of the time. I just talked about how distant I was with my dad, talking about dads he didn't mention his but I wasn't going to push my luck, he'd already told me enough about himself.
We spent a few more hours together just talking and playing a few rounds of online mobile games, until 1pm when I decided to leave for Mako's. I assumed he'd be done with school for the day.
Khalid stood beside me while I locked my door, we were still engaged in small talk about nothing in particular, he then followed me as I made my way to the elevator.
"I reckon you're not as antisocial as you seem, you've made friends already," he responded after I told him I was going to pay someone a visit at their expensive flat.
I giggled.
"No you shouldn't, it's just Mako" I sent him a smile "but that does not mean I'm as antisocial as I seem, I'm just... observant?" I said the last word like a question tilting my head at him
He shook his head in disbelief, "observant, I hear you," he replied which made both us of laugh. "Mako did tell us he has a friend staying in one of those really fancy dorms just a few blocks away, and he'd be staying there for a while" he finished after we'd stopped laughing.
We had already gotten to the lift, I stopped to round up our conversation.
Nodding my head I replied, "indeed, and he invited me over."
"For the night?" He asked with a concerned look as he scanned me for any bags.
"Nope, as you can see I'm not carrying any extra clothes along with me, so I should be coming back later this evening." I replied spreading my hands apart to show I had nothing on me.
"Oh okay, see you later then and say hi to Mako for me" he waved, as he hit the button opening the elevator for me before stepping back.
"Sure will" I replied as I got into the elevator and hit the button for the ground floor, smiling sheepishly.
I couldn't stop the smile and tingling sensation I had, and this was caused by Khalid.
I shook my head bringing myself back to the present, I was going to see Mako in his flat, the one person who's too friendly. I wasn't scared but I must admit I was a bit expectant, I couldn't say why exactly but I admired Mako's lips.
Oops, maybe I'm expecting a kiss today?
I felt so desperate as I laughed out softly at myself before stepping out of the elevator as it had already opened, making my way to the towering black gate and out of the compound.
