Chapter 6 - New roommate.
Oliver
I was back up in my room, I'd taken a shower and had what I would call dinner; half a box of pizza and two cups of strawberry smoothie.
That is definitely not good for dinner.
I really needed to learn how to feed myself properly, I would start with going grocery shopping on Saturday. I opened my laptop it was 9:45pm.
Jess should still be awake, she doesn't even sleep early to start with, 9:45pm is like the middle of the day to her. I picked up my phone and dialed her number, she answered on the first ring.
I told you, still afternoon.
"Are you ever away from your phone?" I asked when I was certain the phone had gotten to her ear and she could hear me.
"Yes Oliver," she stressed my name more than necessary, knowing how much it irks me when people stress my name "I stay away from my phone when I'm in the bathroom, but not everytime. Sometimes it goes in there with me" she answered, sounding all Jess like.
I rolled my eyes, "Jess?" I said her name like a question which I followed up with a dramatic sigh, trying to signal my frustration.
"Yes boo boo," she answered.
"Just go on Skype, I'm calling you now." I'd already started calling her and it was ringing.
"Oki," I heard rumbling sounds like she just got into a fight with somebody. My best guess; she's naked so she's trying to cover up that body of hers.
Not like I've not seen her in bras before.
She picked up and instantly appeared on my screen, with her face too close to the camera I got scared for a minute as I yelped and backed away from my laptop.
A nice chat with Jess was just what I needed, Chris's words hurt like an open wound even though he didn't mean it in a hurtful way.
"What?" She asked finally putting distance between her and the camera of her laptop, "I was sanitising my camera so I'd look good".
I couldn't help but laugh loudly at that, she resumed what she was doing before I called her, painting her nails.
"Typical Jess, why are you even trying to look good to me I've seen you in your worst." I said after laughing, I cleared my throat and continued "and why are you painting your nails by 9:50 are you meeting anyone in your dreams?" I asked trying to see the colours she was making use of.
"Mom! Oliver doesn't want me to look good, he wants me to look unkept and remain single with dirty unpolished nails!" she yelled despite how late it was.
I'm not sure if I heard right but her mum yelled back, probably telling her to keep it down. Her mum was a perfect match for her, they both knew how to handle themselves and they were both loud. Her dad and her twin kid brothers on the other hand were quite adorable little things.
Her brothers not her dad, yeesh.
She looked back at me "mum said our friendship is over" she said pouting at me making me arch my eyebrows and roll my eyes again.
"So what's up? Wait your eyes look tired, have you been gawking at many cuties lately?" She teased as she tried to observe my face.
I chuckled.
Jess knew about my bi-curiousity, I always told her anytime I had a crush on a guy back in highschool and even when I did not tell her, she always found out one way or another.
Having a smirk on my face I replied her "well there are cuties alright; there's Khalid, Chris, Patrick, Alex, Mako oh yeah Mako is giving off real gay vibes, I mean I know my gayder is weak bu-" she cut me halfway.
"Oh my God, Olly!" she clapped, bouncing on her bed.
"And Justin," I added, smirking a lot visibly now as I wiggled my eyebrows at her.
She squeaked so loudly her mum cautioned her again. The funny thing is, her room is upstairs and the walls of her house are not thin but somehow her voice always manage to resonate around the house.
"Sorry mum!" she yelled back
Does she even realise that she's still yelling?
I laughed out loudly now, tapping my bed.
"All these guys, they're in your department or you joined the LGBT club already?" She asked which caused me to roll my eyes again at her. She always boasted about how one day she'll make me roll my eyes and I'll see my empty skull, I won't find a brain.
"No, they're in our dorm, roommates to each other, and NO I haven't joined the LGBT club," I replied.
I had no intention of joining the club.
She fake fainted, placing the back of her palm on her forehead dramatically.
"So they're in our dormitory, you get to see them everyday." She said after she finished her dramatic facade "even every night if you wish," she continued, winking at me.
I gasped dramatically holding my chest, what can I say? We're both overly theatrical.
"No Jess, just no, moreover they are all straight."
"Oh," she said with disappointment "so they're all mine then." Her face lit up with a smile which made me chuckle and nod my head from side to side. "The Mako guy though, the one your gayder is picking up?" She asked.
"I don't know, I-I'm not sure. I will remain unsure untill I ask which is very odd," I stated.
"Well it takes one to know one," she replied.
I was going to tell her about Casper but I didn't want to upset either of us. Bringing up Casper now would take the joy out of this very conversation.
"Oh I finally found a roommate, I mean I wasn't really looking I already knew I was gonna stay with my mum's boss's niece, but now it's been finalized" she told me.
"Wait Yadiri?" I asked.
Her mum's boss, some Miss Effiong was African-American and was the CEO of the company Jess' mum worked for. Her sister's children who stay in Nigeria usually came visiting during the summer and Christmas breaks almost every year. Due to the close relationship Jess' mum had with her boss, whenever her niece and nephews came around they'd spend so much time with Jess and her brothers, and sometimes sleep over at their house. Miss Effiong was RICH, and still single.
Just then the realisation of this very arrangement hit me.
"Jess, do you really want to?" I asked sounding a lot more worried than I wanted to. "I mean, do you really want to stay with her?" I tried to sound less worried, I didn't want her to pick it up.
"Of course, she's beau and classy. I don't know about you but I would love to have a black beautiful girl as a roommate." She replied, throwing her hands in the air creating emphasis, "we've been sharing snaps all day, she's arriving on Saturday."
I felt really distressed now, I did not want a situation where Jess would have a homophobic roommate and I would be forced to act normal.
What even is normal?
"Isn't she... homophobic?" I voiced my worries out to her which made her frown.
"You're being stereotypical right now, Olly." She said, shaking her head at me, "not every Nigerian or African is homophobic. Besides she already knows my best friend is gay," she stated. I was about to freak out but then she stopped me by raising her hand, "correction bi-curious," she finished and resumed polishing her nails.
That didn't make me feel any better, she just gave out my secret but if she trusts Yadiri, I decided to trust her as well.
"And she's okay with it?" I asked her.
"Of course, she's fine with it. You've met Yadiri she's lovely, you guys will get along." She assured me while flashing me a smile.
I let out a relieved sigh.
"I'm sorry, I just got so scared for a minute." I told her honestly.
"Yeah, I get you and it's pronounced Yadiri." She corrected me which made me frown.
"That's exactly what I said," still having the frown on my face, I tried pronouncing it in my head.
"No, that's not what you said, it's Yadirichukwu. Ekenedo is her last name." She informed me.
I gave up trying to pronounce the name because she just made it a lot harder, we talked till 11:45, when I felt my eyes giving out and my head started complaining, we said goodbyes to each other and hung up. She was way too giddy, not even a bit sleepy, she's been texting with Yadiri so the time difference got her pretty messed up. That explains why she stays in bed till 12pm.
Friday came and went by like a blur, I stayed in my room all day watching animé I only went out to a restaurant for lunch. Alex, Patrick and Justin were all in Chris's room playing on Khalid's PS4. I was really tempted to go join them but I sucked at video games and the courage to knock was no where near me.
My breakfast was a whole box of chocolates and I had just had dinner, left over chicken and chips which I had with ketchup. I really wasn't bothered about getting fat because that wasn't in my genes. I scrolled through my Instagram feed liking some posts on the way. I had a new follower, I smiled when I opened the account and found out it was Mako before I then followed back.
He sent me loads of heart emojis which I sent back to him and it became a war which he later won by a very long margin.
I went to bed after some time when sleep came tugging at my eyes, I had spent the whole day watching animé so this was very much expected. I thought about grocery shopping tomorrow and I sighed when it occurred to me once again that I didn't have a car to drive to the supermarket. I'd brought it up to my mum during the week, she told me not to get so worked up about it, apparently she was already working towards getting me a car, that made me really happy and love her even more.
My love for my mum was not based on material things, but I suppose these material things strengthened the love. It's just something that happens subconsciously, even if my mum refused to get me a car I'd love her nonetheless.
Saturday morning was quite lively, the pool side and the pool itself was filled with people mostly seniors, I guess most inhabitants of the dormitory were back now. My eyes landed on Chris, Justin and Patrick, Justin was the only one in his swim shorts though and bloody hell he had really nice legs and firm stomach packs.
I stopped myself from gawking and said Hi to them and some of the seniors who greeted me, most of them were really friendly. I had a small chat with one of them who I later came to know his name was Sam, our conversation ended with him saying he hopes to see me around, I tried my best not to blush as I beamed at him and walked away.
I went back up to my room, going through with the rest of my morning routine, I'd already brushed my teeth before going down to the pool. I wore something casual on my puma sneakers as I got ready to go grocery shopping, I inspected my reflection in the mirror, I looked a bit skinnier.
What did anyone say about getting fat?
I picked up my phone and keys as I put all my money and my credit card, just incase of an emergency, into my pocket. I stepped out and locked my door. On my way to the lift, I unlocked my phone trying to check the distance to the nearest supermarket on the maps application then I bumped into him.
"Alqarf!" he exclaimed. (shit)
Oh smooth Oliver, real smooth. I thought as my head came in contact with his well built, firm, strong yet good feeling chest.
