Chapter 6: The funeral
Returning to Oakland, especially to her father was the hardest thing for her to do. Don't get her wrong he was a great dad. He made sure she did all she wanted and let her see Olivia even though he and Uncle Eli were still angry at each other. But her father would let her join him on his outings sometimes. The stuff she saw schooled her on different ways of killing it scared her. Parking in the long driveway, she got out as she was met with August Marks, right-hand man to Damon Pope. She had walked towards him as he brought her into a hug. The hug was quick as he relished in her warmth.
August and Sybil were like best friends in a benefits type of way. Veronica used to always tease them about it. Veronica, her name felt like a prayer. She pulled back from him.
"August, how are you?" Sybil asked him.
"I'm good now that you're here. I'm sorry for Veronica Sybil." August told her as he tried not to smile.
"Thank you," Sybil says as August directs a maid to get her bags.
"Come. He wants to see you." August said as they walked inside.
August had taken her to Damon's office as he sat waiting on his oldest daughter. His beautiful oldest reminded him so much of his wife. He had given his little girls all he could. He made sure they did what they wanted to do, and was there for their first heartbreak. Threaten many of their boyfriends. The only reason why he let Veronica date Laroy was because his daughter liked him. And look where it got her. Dead. The retaliation for the Niners attacking the Sons of Anarchy mother charter. He would never forgive them. He found the specific one that killed his daughter. Tig Trager. He would know how it was done. An eye for an eye. Daughter for a daughter.
When the doors opened to show his oldest daughter. Damon stood up to see how she had grown since the two years she had been gone. She was so beautiful as he brought his daughter into a tight hug. As she began to cry into his shoulder, holding her father tight as he comforted her. August left the father and daughter alone. August was used to seeing his boss vulnerable around his daughters but in public was ruthless as can be.
Once the moment was over, Sybil and her father pulled back.
"Dad, what happened?" Sybil asked her dd.
"The guy that your sister was dating was part of the Niners, a crew here in Oakland. Retaliation from what August found out for attacking the Sons of Anarchy mother charter." Damon told his daughter as he sat in his office chair.
"Why would the Niners attack the Sons of Anarchy 's mother charter?" Sybil asked.
"I don't know but I'm going to find out. I'm going to need you here with me. I hear you have the president in your back pocket." Damon tells her.
"I'm a fixer. We fix things." Sybil avoided her father's knowing look.
"Sybil even though you have been gone for 2 years, I know everything," Damon spoke.
"It was a mistake. I didn't want it to get that far." Sybil said to her father.
"You love him. There's no mistake for something like that. I wouldn't mind having a president as a son-in-law. It will be harder to scare him." Damon joked.
Sybil laughed at her father as he laughed too.
"We'll have Veronica's funeral tomorrow before I start my revenge plan," Damon told his daughter.
"How are we going to confront this mother character?" Sybil questioned her father.
"Sybil, eye for an eye. Always remember that." Damon told his baby girl.
"Daughter for a daughter," Sybil whispers. She felt bad for the daughter's father but like a father-like daughter she understood where her father going with this. He killed my sister. His daughter would meet the same fate. Another reason why she never stayed home, regardless of her lovable father. She was ruthless when she wanted to be too. Sybil stood up, going over to kiss her father's cheek before going up to her old room. Her clothes were already put up in the closet as before she went to wrap up her hair.
She strips her face of makeup before taking a much-needed shower. Crying softly as she washed up again crying for herself, her situation with Fitz, and her sweet sister. Soon that crying turned to anger as she bammed against the shower wall. She learned to sit in the tub. It wasn't until the water ran cold before she got out. She wrapped herself up in a towel before going to her room, where she lotioned up her body before spraying body mist. She got dressed before heading back to the bathroom to brush her teeth. She finally went to bed after that.
24 hours earlier- Washington DC
Olivia sat with her client Sharon Marquette as they watched the news as it spoke about the president.
" You did a nice job with him, the president getting him elected, I mean," Sharon said as they watched the news.
"The American people did that," Olivia says getting the attention off of her. Sybil had a hand in helping her but she, Cyrus, and Mellie got him the presidency. She wondered how Sybil was who lost Veronica.
"Oh, honey. I followed that election. He was a diamond in the rough before you started working for him. You were responsible for that photo op with the little girl with cancer, where he played the piano. Didn't your relative? What was her name?" Sharon spoke as she tried to think of Sybil's name.
"Sybil. And it was the guitar." Olivia responded to her.
"Yes, her. She also helped you. Where is she?" Sharon asked.
"She's dealing with family issues," Olivia answered before Sharon continued talking.
"You made him. Why did you leave the White House? No one leaves a job in the West Wing without a good reason. You both made him." Sharon told her. Harrison had come in.
"Liv, we're ready. Line two." Harrison told her as she walked into her open office and pressed 2 before talking to Stephen.
"Stephen, you in?" Olivia asked Stephen.
"We're in," Stephen answered her.
Quinn had come in as Olivia spoke to Stephen giving him instructions.
"Ohh. I'm sorry. I'm here. Where is everybody?" Quinn questioned Harrison who waited in the break room.
"On the job. We have a client." Harrison replied to her.
"What's going on?" Quinn asked before Harrison told her.
"We're fixers. We're fixing."
Olivia and Co. missed Sybil so much as they worked on this case. Sybil had called neither of them today but was reassured by Huck that she had made it to Oakland just in time. Olivia knew how Sybil could drive.
16 hours in Washington DC: President's castle (Lawn)
Fitz met Cyrus on the lawn as he looked to start his next scheduled appointment. The events that happened the night before still stayed in his mind, but he wondered about Sybil and how she was. He knew Cyrus would want to talk about him and Sybil and he didn't want to hear it. Sybil was 27 when their relationship started. She was a few years younger than Olivia when they met.
"They ready for me?" Fitz questioned Cyrus, who stared at him before answering.
"In a minute. Mr. President..." Cyrus was cut off by Fitz.
"Big day, Cyrus. A great day for the American people."
"We need to talk about this." Cyrus retorted.
"I am nominating a man to the Supreme Court today. One of the finest constitutional scholars in the country. He's going to change the face of American law. Did you know Keating also has a PhD? He wrote his dissertation on the nature of revolutions. Revolutions, Cyrus!" Fitz argued back.
" And he likes sunsets and long walks on the beach. He's perfect, sir. It is a great day, but we need to talk about Sybil." Cyrus said to Fitz, whose eyes light at the sound of her name. Cyrus could now see what he had been missing for the longest.
"We can do this another time." Fitz ignored him, but Cyrus wouldn't take a no for an answer.
"We're doing this now." Cyrus fixed his lip up to say to Fitz.
"Look, you misunderstood what you saw." Fitz tried to tell Cyrus.
"I did not misunderstand. It may be a long while since I had an angry lover on my hands, but I do remember what it looked like. You're having an affair with Sybil Pope, Olivia's cousin." Cyrus told him as he tried not to cuss him out.
"I am not having an affair." Fitz retorted.
"Having, had, don't Clinton me with words. Something happened between you and Sybil, and something happened between you and Amanda Tanner. I need to know how much trouble we're in." Cyrus pressed him.
"This is not a discussion we are going to have," Fitz argued with him. Fitz didn't want to hear it.
"Olivia is representing her. Amanda Tanner. She's now Olivia Pope's client. All because you pissed off Sybil. You know how much Olivia loves Sybil. I'm on your side. Do you understand? I'm on your side. " Cyrus pleaded with him his face calm but his eyes were telling to Fitz.
"Cy This is a great day for the American people. Don't ruin it." Fitz concluded before he left to go to the area.
9 hours later in Washington DC:
After finding out information about Mrs. Keating. The couple, Fitz and Olivia stood in the white house as the couple talked about the problem Mrs. Keating started.
"I didn't say that." Mrs. Keating and Mr. Keating could be heard shouting in the room as they gave them privacy.
"You did just now. You did!" Mr. Keating shouted back.
" He's the perfect jurist methodical, analytical, nonpartisan. He lives by the letter of the law. You chose well but then you always do." Fitz told his friend as they stared at the door.
"He would have been a great Supreme Court justice. I couldn't stop it. It's coming out." Olivia says still staring at the door. She was surprised he hadn't asked about Sybil.
"Where's Sybil?" Fitz asked her.
She spoke too soon. Olivia turned to look at him before answering.
" It's not my place," Olivia responded to him.
"Olivia, where is she?" Fitz almost pleaded with Olivia.
" She just lost her sister. She's in her hometown now." Olivia says to him.
"She's in Oakland. She's with him." Fitz started.
Olivia stared at him. He knew about Damon. She must have told him.
"Yes," Olivia confessed.
Fitz thought about all Sybil told him about Damon Pope those nights that they spent talking to each with hopes and dreams. The King Pin had the power of the president in Oakland as he controlled judges, mayors, etc. Fitz knew that she loved her father, but she hated that she was just like him. He never met Damon Pope and he hopes he never will. They switched back to their talk before as they spoke about any suggestions as she commented that she never worked for him. The way he talked about the Keating couple finding forgiveness made her think that he was talking about him and Sybil. The pair stood quietly as the couple finished their shouting.
3 hours in Washington DC: White House/ Oval Office
Fitz and Cyrus at in the loveseats as they talked about the day they had.
"And, so, the day was saved by Olivia Pope, as usual. You know, there are 13 arrows in the eagle's left claw to represent the 13 states. It's 13 everything. 13 clouds. 13 leaves on the olive branch. Olivia helped us. She's not against us." Fitz spoke to Cyrus letting him know that he had nothing to worry about.
"Mm." Cyrus huffed before Fitz spoke again.
"You're not talking to me now? The leader of the free world is standing on the presidential seal in the Oval Office, slightly inebriated. I think that would warrant a lecture, at least some words from his majesty Cyrus Beene, king of me." Fitz complained to Cyrus.
" What do you want me to say? You won't tell me anything. I'm not someone you trust, so you just stand there alone on your presidential seal. Have a party." Cyrus complained back to him.
"I know I don't get to do what other men do. Above reproach, my whole life. I'm not John Edwards. I get it. Wear the crown. And that's fine. There's a price. But Sybil is the love of my life. And she won't even talk to me. She's not in town right now anyway. Okay? We do not talk about this tomorrow. You hate scotch." Fitz concluded to his second hand.
"I do But I don't tonight, not with you, and we won't talk about it tomorrow," Cyrus concluded also before they both said.
"You're on my side."
"I'm on your side, Mr. President." Cyrus finished.
"You think Reagan did this? Hell, Roosevelt? You know Nixon and Clinton did, but Carter or Truman? " Fitz asked Cyrus who didn't have an answer.
0 hours later: Washington, D.C
Olivia and Co. might've hit two birds and one stone, but they still had to deal with the reporter who was trying to get the scope of the Amanda Tanner situation.
The next day:
Sybil woke up the next morning to get ready for Veronica's funeral. She took a shower before getting out and doing her usual routine. She put on her funeral dress that went up to her knee.
She grabs her hat and puts it on top of her head before she grabs her purse and heads downstairs where Damon is waiting along with August. She carefully walked down the stairs as her father motioned with his arms for her to take it as they left the house. They stepped into the limo and August sat up front with the driver.
"You look beautiful Babygirl," Damon told his daughter.
"Thanks, Dad." Sybil smiled a weak smile.
"Soon once this is done, Veronica will be revenged," Damon told Sybil again before she looked out the window which was tinted black.
"Have you got the eye out on the mother charter?" Sybil asked.
"Soon the police will get the daughter of Tig Trager, the one that killed Veronica," Damon told her the plan.
They made it to the Buriel site as they got out walking out to see the grave that would have her sister's body. It was just the two of them and August as they listened to the priest say his sermon. As they watch her body, returns to her mother who would protect her until she loses her flesh, and she melds within her. Sybil cried as both she and Damon gave flowers to be buried with her. Sybil broke down crying as her father comforted her. August nodded away the priest as the father and daughter duo relished in their sorrow. And just like in the bathroom in the shower, her sorrow turned into anger. They pulled away as Damon stared at his daughter, seeing the familiar eyes that he knew so well. His baby was back to him. His leader was back to him.
Leaving so they can get ready to start their revenge plot.
