THE PUNISHMENT

Not proofread, ignore spelling and grammatical errors

Karishma could read return of stony expressions and her heart started throbbing in her chest, anticipating her punishment, she at once bowed her head again and clenched her fists to brace herself. "Submit four day leave application and reach at this address tomorrow sharp at 9 am. There a dove sign will guide you to your punishment," Haseena ordered in cold voice passing a paper to her.

With utterly confused expressions, she once glanced at the address then at Haseena. Upon not getting anything else from her, she gave her a slight nod and left the cabin drowned in her own thoughts. "I had forgiven you long ago Karishma but I can't let you know that......I want you to overpower your anger issues once and for all......I know you will do anything for me but......I don't know how you will react tomorrow at the revelation," Haseena thought staring at the back of Karishma who was moving towards the desk with the paper in her hand.

Next morning Karishma reached the venue, only to find three different building in the premises, "What is this.....now how will I know, which one I need to enter?" she was mumbling to herself while looking here and there. It was then her eyes went on the dove sign logo beside the board lifeline and she remembered Haseena's words.

Entering that building, she witnessed about ten to 15 people sitting at different corners of the reception area apparently filling a form, "It seems some registration is going on......and this form too has that logo.......but what it is about? And why I am being sent here....?" These questions were roaming in her head when she heard a man in his late thirties talking over the phone, "I know mom this course is difficult than other anger management courses but court has put forth the condition for my daughter's custody that I have to pass this one only......so, there is no question of difficulty left then I have to do it at any cost....."

"Oh, anger management course....." she realized and before she could think of anything else she heard another voice, "I am glad that their head has accepted me in her course, you know she herself led only one course in a year while all others were led by her staff. Even I have heard that whosoever pass the course never faces issues of uncontrolled anger.......i am just hoping that I could heal myself through this...."

Karishma smiled peacefully as she realized what Haseena wanted from her, "I knew it Haseena, you could never harm me.....however I had never thought that this will be the punishment......an anger management course so that I can never lose my sanity again upon encountering such conditions.......i will cross this path regardless of its level of difficulty for reaching to you......" she thought to herself and walked towards the reception full of determination for taking the form.

All the 10 candidates belonging to different professions and age groups both male and female, were waiting for the course incharge in a room. At about 11 a.m. a lady entered the room, "Okay participants, I want to remind you all few things before you will meet you incharge. Your incharge will be our head doctor, firstly you will address her as mam, secondly, you will comply with her every command without question if you want to go through the course till end otherwise she will through you out of her session the very next moment. Thirdly, you ten are the lucky candidates of this year who are going to attend her sessions so take its full advantage and get yourself healed because she is the best you can get in India."

All gave her an impressed nod when she finally announced, "Please stand up for Head of the Lifeline institute, best psychologist of the country, Dr Haseena Malik!!" shock would be an understatement for what Karishma felt at the announcement and she at once turned towards the gate only to see her Haseena, her madam sir dressed in light pink simple kurti trouser with white coat and a duppatta in her neck, entering the venue. "Madam Sir!! Is it really you.....doctor....?" she could not hold herself and said loudly from the centre of all participants.

Haseena glanced at her with raised eyebrows, "Its mam for you Mrs Singh, kindly remember the instructions if you want to continue with us." "Sorry mam!!" she at once sealed her mouth and bowed her eyes realizing that this is not going to be easy for her at all.....

"Please have a seat everyone and relax yourself, today is the first introductory session," she gestured before moving behind the dice.

"A wise man has once said, 'you cannot see your reflection in boiling water, similarly, you cannot see truth in a state of anger' I am sure all of you must have its first-hand experience, Am I right?" she asked, making eye contact with all and then stopped at Karishma, with raised eyebrows who responded her with a disappointing nod. Her own words and actions flashed in her mind and a lone tear escaped from the corner of her eyes which did not go unnoticed by Haseena.

Haseena's own heart clenched, "however, if you are here today, it means you are ready to let it go. From today you no longer have to dwell in remorse, guilt and egret over your actions because I will lead you all out of it. Now put your right hand on your heart, close your eyes, take a deep breath and enlist the reasons in your head for which you want to learn anger management techniques."

Few moments passed and she could clearly see change of expressions on every one's face including Karishma's who had clenched her fists and gritted her teeth as she was feeling a sudden surge of anger on herself.

She had left the dice and started walking in between them to support them in her soft impactful voice. She reached near Karishma and whispered in her ear, "It's okay, you can still return..........you can redeem yourself," and relaxed her nerves a bit.

In the same way she supported all of them as they were going through all sorts of remorseful and repenting emotions.

"Okay it's enough.........stop thinking.....take some deep breathes, exhale out all anger which has built inside you........now slowly open your eyes........." she instructed them while walking back to the dice.

Karishma had opened her eyes being amazed at her skills, how beautifully she had taken her in those memories and brought her out of it, too without letting her anger flooded out uncontrollably and that too in a matter of hardly five minutes.

Haseena's direct question from her brought her out of her thoughts, "So, Mrs Singh what is your reason???" On one hand she found everyone looking at her making her nervous on the other hand Haseena's sharp eyes was demanding an answer she could not refuse to give.

She took a deep breath and collected all her courage, ready for not disappointing Haseena at any cost. Standing up, she addressed, in a voice audible to everyone looking directly in Haseena's eyes, "mam, though my anger had caused a lot of damage to me earlier also but I never felt the need to join any such course until this time when I had hurted my lifeline.....my mentor and my best friend..........i had lost her because of my anger issues......and the only condition she had put forth in front of me for accepting my friendship back is to learn to manage my anger," her voice shakes and tears streamed down by the end of her words. All who have been looking at her adored her love and respect for her friend but none noticed Haseena's wet eyes except Karishma. She had shaken her head sideways telling her not to cry; Haseena nodded and cleared her eyes the next instant. She had wiped her own tears and sat back while Haseena had continued asking the same question to everyone.

"I want all of you to make your reasons you motivation to learn. It will help you go through all those disturbing and difficult emotions which will break inside you during this course," She advised at the end of the all answers. All gave her a nod when she added, "Next session will start after lunch" with that she left the room. Karishma who was about to run behind her to confront her but then postponed the idea until completion of the course.

Two hours later, Haseena had once resumed her session. Standing behind dice, she started a PPT slide on the projector titled 'Anger management strategies'

"In this session I will introduce you with some anger management techniques which we will practise in coming days." She paused stared at Karishma who was looking at the slides on the projector, hearing her with full dedication. She smiled a little, peacefully, and resumed her lecture.

"First of all, you need to identify your trigger points so that you can act accordingly. Next important step, once you're encountered with one of those triggers then take a step back and ask yourself if your anger will be harmful. Do remember that anger is not always bad. Sometimes in situation where you have to fight, anger can be helpful so, it is important to evaluate before deciding if you need to let yourself flow or you need to control it." As she paused to have a sip of water she saw Karishma pondering over her words, "I wish you finish this soon, because I am yearning to have you in my arms," she thought to herself.

"Now the question arises, what to do to calm your angry nerves? Answer to this that different strategies work for different people. To name a few, stepping away from the situation, talking to a friend, intensive physical activity, by telling yourself facts instead of over exaggerating the cause, distract yourself by involving in other activities. In short, make a calm down Kit for yourself, just like a first aid kit that will save you in time. And this exactly what we'll do in coming days." All nodded understanding her point.

Each of you will now have practice sessions in groups and individually. On fourth day you will have a final test, passing which you will get certificate. You all may move to reception and take your schedule, Good luck!!" with that she once again walked out not before glancing at Karishma who gave her a nod.
