CAN BROKEN HEART BE MENDED
CHAPTER NINE
NAINA
We had enjoyed the puja celebrations in our office today, especially the moments we shared together… his constant staring… his constant touch… his need of being close to me… I’d goosebumps when he’d held my hands while taking the aarti. That moment was surreal… I felt alive… my heart was thudding so loudly that I was afraid that Sameer would hear it. Even while having lunch, he was sitting next to me. We’d fed each other too. There were curious glances thrown our way. But that didn’t bother us.
The rest of the day we’d spent at Gateway of India & Marine Drive. I enjoyed everything today. There was something different in Sameer’s behavior today. It seemed like he was openly showcasing his feelings. He was stumped with my traditional look today. I could see the appreciation in his eyes. He too looked striking in his Indian outfit. I don’t know how he would react tomorrow after seeing me in an Indian attire again. He was in for a surprise tomorrow that would blow his mind. I know I’m playing with fire but still I was taking the risk.
Since it was Diwali tomorrow, I’d been helping my mother in cooking some snacks & sweets from last three days. I loved Diwali a lot… Since childhood, I’ve been very fond of this festival of lights. But this Diwali would be my best till now. The reason was one & only SAMEER... I’d never imagined that I would be a part of Sameer’s life so soon. Today he confessed that he didn’t love Sunaina & that was a kind of relief for me, as somewhere I’d known this all along, but I wanted to hear it from him.
The biggest happiness he gave me was when he said that he likes me… That was the happiest moment of my life. I would wait for my entire lifetime to hear him say that he loves me. I’d almost blurted that I love him after his confession. But somehow, I’d controlled myself. I didn’t want to scare him away with my feelings so soon.
I knew that he was controlling himself from kissing me today when he dropped me home. I’ve noticed him closely for this past whole week & now I can gauge his body language easily. His eyes are his way to his heart. I can read him easily as he’s too expressive with his eyes. I’d seen his eyes darkening many times which only meant that he wanted to hold me close & kiss me senseless. To be honest, even I felt the same when he was around me. That time would come soon.
We were decorating our flat with lightings & small kandils at the entrance. I’d to get up early the next day to make rangoli. After finishing dinner, I retired to my room. I arranged all the things that I wanted to wear tomorrow to visit Sameer’s place. Once done, I checked my mobile if there were any messages. There was a WhatsApp notification, I clicked open to find that Sameer had created a group of six friends, naming it ‘FRIENDS FOREVER’. There was his message too, ‘Everyone be at my place by six in the evening tomorrow. Nanu is more excited to meet you all… Cyuuu…’
My mobile rang before I could reply to that message. I blushed seeing the caller name. “Hellooo…” “Hellooo sweetheart… Kya kar rahi ho?”, he said huskily… Whenever he called me with such endearments, my heart would do summersaults. My heartbeat would start racing. And I’m sure he knew it too… “Sameer… Main abhi bas kal ki taiyaari kar rahi hun. Ummm… Tumne khaana khaaya?” I said almost keeping my voice normal. “Haannn… Bas abhi hi dinner karke apne room mein aaya. Tumne dinner kiya na thik se? Lunch mein thik se khaaya nahi tha tumne.” I smiled at his caring nature.
“Haannn… Maine acche se khaaya… waise tum kya kar rahe ho?” I just wanted to know what he was doing. “Ummm… woh main na abhi meri sweet beautiful girlfriend se baat kar raha hun.” I blushed… “Dekho Naina… tum na sharmaana band kardo ab… kitna sharmaati ho tum… waise sach kahun jab tum sharmaati ho na, toh tumhare gaal ekdum laal ho jaate hai, fir pataa hai mujhe kya mann karta hai???” now I was blushing deeply.
“Kya mann karta hai Sameer???” I asked softly. “Mann karta hai unn gaalon ki laali ko mere hoothon par bhi le aaun.” I closed my eyes feeling his lips on my red cheeks… “Aur bhi bohot kuch karne ka mann karta hai Naina…”, he said huskily. I shivered hearing his voice. “Naina… Apne kamre ke aaine ke saamne jao.” I followed his instructions & stood in front of my dressing table. “Dekho… Tumhare gaal aur bhi laal ho gaye honge ab.” I could see my reddened cheeks as I was blushing profusely at his words.
“Naina… mujhse ab intezaar nahi ho raha… nahi reh sakta durr tumse…main abhi aa jaun tumse milne wahaan?” I came back to my senses at his words, “Nahi… Sameer… hum kal mil rahe hai na. Main bhi tumse durr nahi reh sakti. Par abhi milna thik nahi hoga na. Time dekha tumne? Raat ke saadhe baarah baj rahe hai. Abhi so jao Sameer. Tum mujhe kal lene aa rahe ho na paanch baje? Main tumhara intezaar karungi.”
I could hear him sigh at the other end. “Thik hai… main kal tumhe lene aa jaunga. Taiyaar rehna time pe. Warna utha kar le jaunga jis bhi haalat mein rahogi waise hi.” We both chuckled at that. “Goodnight Sameer… Aur suno… kal Diwali hai toh jaldi uthna… Nanu ke saath puja karna… aur jo mall se kurta set liya tha, wohi pehenna…” I knew he must be smiling at my rants… but still I continued, “Mithai toh laaye ho na? Agar nahi hai, toh main le aaungi…” he chuckled softly, “Nainu… maine sab suna aur main sab kar bhi lunga. And don’t worry, mithai Ramdhari le aaya hai aaj hi…”
“Thik hai… Ab so jao Sameer… Kal jaldi bhi uthna hai…” “Mann nahi kar raha phone rakhne ka Naina… Tumse aise hi baatein karne ka mann kar raha hai…” I smiled at his antics. I started yawning, faking it. “Naina… tum thak gayi hogi na… toh so jao… kal milenge… Goodnight Naina… Cyuu tomorrow… till then miss you Jaan…” I felt bad for faking the yawns but he needed to sleep too… take some rest… so I did it… “Kal milenge Sameer… Goodnight… Miss you too… Muuuaaaaaahhhhhh…” and I disconnected the call before he could react…
I couldn’t sleep whole night. I was tossing & turning throughout as I was nervous. I was going to go to Sameer’s house for the first time & meet Nanu… I don’t know what Nanu would think of me & I wasn’t even sure how Sameer would introduce me to his Nanu… I got up too early before my alarm could ring. I freshened up & went outside to make rangoli. I loved colors… I drew two small rangolis at either side of our flat’s entrance. I clicked some pictures of the rangolis.
I could hear the noise of some crackers from our garden. I moved inside our flat & stood in the balcony to see children lighting the crackers. I smiled seeing their excitement. I wasn’t a cracker person. I loved to celebrate Diwali in a silent way… just lightings, rangolis, sweets & enjoying with family & friends. I got back inside & got ready as I knew some neighbors would arrive to meet & greet us happy Diwali.
I got ready in a cream-colored georgette Anarkali dress which had pink & golden threadwork throughout the neckline & at the border of the sleeves & at the end of the dress. I pinned the heavy pink banarasi dupatta at one side so that I could manage it. I wore simple pearl earring to match the dress. I just applied kajal & pink lipstick. My half open hair completed my look. I clicked some pictures with my parents & some selfies of mine.
I sent those pictures on our new WhatsApp group. Preeti & Swati too posted some of their photos. Munna & Pandit did the same after some time. Everyone complimented each other. But there was no trace of Sameer yet. We all wished Happy Diwali to each other. Pandit & Munna were going to pick up Preeti & Swati today. Sameer neither posted any of his photos nor he wished Happy Diwali. I got worried as he wasn’t even picking up my calls. I just hoped that everything would be fine at his place.
My mobile rang & I heaved a sigh of relief when I saw it was Sameer’s call. “Kahan the tum? Kab se phone kar rahi hun. Tumne wish bhi nahi kiya aur apne photos bhi nahi bheje. Ghar pe sab thik hai na Sameer? Bolo na…” He chuckled, “Arey tum bolne do tab bolunga na Naina… Ek saath itne saare sawaal pooch rahi ho… Thodi saans bhi le lo.” I didn’t reply & he continued, “Arey mera phone charging par tha aur main niche tha Nanu ke saath… Nanu ke saath puja ki fir Nanu ke factory se log aaye the hume milne aur wish karne. Toh bas thoda busy ho gaya unke saath. Abhi upar aaya toh messages aur missed calls dekhe. Aur fir turant tumhe call kiya… Naina… Pareshaan ho gayi thi na mere liye. I’m sorry… tumhe pareshaan karne ka bilkul iraada nahi tha mera. Sacchiii…”
I could hear the honesty in his voice & I sobered down, “Happy Diwali Sameer…” I knew he must be smiling. “Happy Diwali Naina… Bas jaldi se shaam ho jaaye aur main tumhe lene aa jaun. I’m missing you terribly Jaan.” I was missing him too… “Sameer… Apne pictures bhejo… mujhe tumhe dekhna hai…” He disconnected the call. I was surprised but then I got a video call from him.
I connected the call & his face appeared. He looked too hot & handsome in his cream-colored kurta which had golden threadwork at the neckline. There was a red teeka on his forehead & his hair was falling continuously on his forehead. I really wanted to run my fingers in his hair & feel it. His smile made my heart skip some beats. “Helloooo Jaan…” I blushed & he winked. “Tum bohot beautiful lag rahi ho Naina…” I blushed more… “Dekho kaise tumhare gaal tamatar ke tarah laal ho gaye hai. Tumhe toh makeup ki koi zarurat hi nahi hai… main bas taarif kar dun aur tumhara chehra laal ho jaata hai…” My cheeks turned beetroot red by now with his constant compliments. “Sameer… Tum bhi bohot acche lag rahe ho…” He smiled & gave me a flying kiss… “Woh kya hai na Naina… Main kisika udhaar nahi rakhta… tumne jo kal raat phone pe diya tha na usse hi lauta raha hun.” I blushed, “Bas karo Sameer...” And I closed my eyes. “Naina… Aise mat sharmao warna main abhi tumhe lene aa jaunga…” I opened my eyes instantly & & saw his eyes darkening again.
But before we both could say anything, I heard my mother calling me outside, “Naina… Tum jao… Mummy bula rahi hai tumhe… Main thik paanch baje tumhe lene aa jaunga… Cyuu soon sweetheart…” “Main wait karungi tumhara…” And we disconnected the video call unwillingly. The rest of the day went very slowly as I was waiting desperately to meet Sameer. It was four when I started to get ready to meet my prince charming…
It took me almost forty-five minutes to get ready. My parents already knew that I was going to visit Sameer’s house today & meet Nanu… They were excited but I was a nervous wreck.
“Naina… Bohot acchi lag rahi ho aaj… Kisi ki nazar na lage meri Gudiya ko.”, my mother applied a little kajal behind my ear. “Aaj toh Sameer ke hosh udne wale hai…”, my father teased me & I blushed.
Sameer had left already & was on his way here. He told me that he would come upstairs & pick me up. I didn’t need to wait for him near the entrance. I was surprised with his sudden change in behavior. But I liked it, nonetheless. I was preparing coffee when I heard the doorbell ring. My heart started thudding loudly again.
My mother opened the door & welcomed Sameer. I could hear their voices from the kitchen. He introduced himself to my parents. The coffee was ready, so I poured them in four cups & took the tray in the living room. There he was sitting in his navy-blue silk kurta with a dark red silk jacquard modi jacket. Handsome was a very small word to describe him today. He had worn a golden chain & a golden ring in his forefinger. I couldn’t look away from his darkening gaze & I knew the reason behind it… I kept the coffee cups on the table & greeted him.
My father coughed loudly breaking his trance & we blushed deeply… he too greeted me & I offered him water which he refused politely & rather he took the coffee cup from the table. My parents confirmed with him that he would join us for lunch tomorrow & he agreed. We finished our coffees & it was time to go to his house. Sameer promised my parents that he would drop me home safely. I asked him to wait for a minute till I collected my mobile & my purse from my room.
My mother handed me a bag full of snacks & mithai to give it to Nanu on their behalf. Sameer took the bag from me. We bid goodbyes to my parents & left my place.
SAMEER
I was desperate to meet Naina… After the phone call at night, I’d taken a cold shower to calm myself. I couldn’t sleep the whole night; I was turning sides on my bed all the time. When I closed my eyes, Naina’s face would pop up, which made me more desperate to see her. I got up early the next morning & joined Nanu for performing puja… Some people from the factory visited to wish us Happy Diwali…
Once all the people left, I left for my room as I’d kept my phone on charging. I saw many messages that popped up on the WhatsApp group that I’d created yesterday. There were pictures of everyone. I was interested to see only Naina’s pictures, so I downloaded them & scrutinized all of them. There were few missed calls from her too & I couldn’t control the urge to hear her voice, so I dialed her number instantly.
She just started asking me so many questions one by one & didn’t even wait for my reply. When I started telling her the reasons, she seemed quiet & I started complimenting her on her pictures. She asked me to send her some of my pictures, but I thought against it & just disconnected the call. I wanted to see & talk to her face to face, so I did a video call. She looked so beautiful in the cream-colored dress that had coincidently matched my cream-colored kurta… I was beyond happy with this coincidence. But I didn’t point out that time as she was continuously blushing at my compliments & teasing. I really wanted to meet her, but I knew that I would’ve to wait till evening to meet her.
Last night she’d given me a loud kiss on the phone call & I returned the favor today by giving her a flying kiss & teased her about it. She was continuously blushing which made my heart race swiftly & the need to have her in my arms & kiss her senseless increased. I could see her eyes darkening in desire too. If she would’ve been in front of me, she wouldn’t have been able to stop me from kissing her. Before we could say anything more, her mother called her & we disconnected the call.
The day went too slow after that. I was waiting for the clock to move a little faster so that I could meet her. After lunch with Nanu, I kept looking at the clock which didn’t go unnoticed by Nanu & he kept teasing me. Finally, I got ready by four & messaged Naina that I would pick her up from her house… I didn’t want her to wait for me at the entrance. And I knew she would be happy if I met her parents, so it was a good chance for me to prove to my lady love that I respected her parents.
I reached her house around five in the evening. I was nervous but regained by confidence when the door was opened by her mother. I thought that Naina would open the door, but she didn’t. Her parents welcomed me wholeheartedly. They were very lovely people. Naina was lucky to have such wonderful & loving parents. I introduced myself & wished them Happy Diwali. I sat down with them on the sofa in the living room. My eyes kept searching for her. My nostrils filled with the aroma of coffee & I knew that she was in kitchen making coffee for us.
When she came out from the kitchen with the tray full of coffee cups, my heartbeats stopped completely. I was mesmerized seeing her clad in the dark pink net saree which had pink embroidery with some diamond studs on it. Was I dreaming??? How did she know that I’d liked that saree in the mall the other day? But we didn’t go to that store. So, when did she buy this saree? I was the one to drop her home every day after office. I stopped my rantings & focused on my NAINA…
She looked so beautiful in that saree… as if the saree was made for her only. She had worn pick diamond studded delicate necklace with matching long earrings. As always there was no ounce of makeup on her face except for kajal & dark pink lipstick. The nose-pin was there too & also the pink bindi. Her hair was left half open. My eyes fell on her hands which had some pink & golden bangles… wait a minute… When did she apply mehendi on her hands??? Last night when I’d called her, there was no mehendi on her hand. Ohhh God… She was full of surprises for me…
Her father coughed loudly breaking my trance & we both blushed deeply at being caught. She offered me water which I refused politely but I picked up the coffee cup instead so that I could taste the coffee made by her for the first time. My eyes weren’t leaving her & she too was staring at me, the same appreciation in her eyes that I’d for her. Her parents kept talking & asked me if I would be joining them for lunch tomorrow, I agreed happily. How could I miss a chance to be close to my love in these Diwali holidays?
We finished our coffees & left her house. I promised to drop her home at night safely. Her mother handed us a bag full of snacks & mithai for Nanu which I accepted happily & left to go to my house… I knew that Naina was nervous too… I could feel it from her body language… the way she was fidgeting with her pallu…
As we entered the lift of her building, I pulled her slowly in my arms to calm her & she melted immediately. I took in her fragrance again. The same fruity essence filled my nostrils which was driving me crazy… the elevator dinged & stopped at the ground floor & we ascended towards my car slowly, hands in hands…
I opened the front door of the car & Naina seated herself carefully holding the pleats of her saree… I smiled looking at the way she was managing the saree carefully. I needed some answers & I knew that she would give them willingly. I kept the bag that I got from her mother at the backseat & took the driver’s seat.
The air conditioner in the car was not working it seems as I was feeling the heat from the seat beside me. I looked at her sideways when I stopped the car at the red lights to find her already looking at me… “Aise kya dekh rahi ho Naina???”, I asked huskily lowering my voice. “Kyun main tumhe nahi dekh sakti kya? Hamesha tum hi dekhoge mujhe?” This girl was surely going to give me a heart attack today with her witty replies.
“Main kahan rok raha hun tumhe. Tum jitna marzi utna dekh lo… Mujhe bohot acha lagta hai jab tum mujhe aise dekhti ho…” I saw the color rising on her cheeks… “Waise kuch kehna bhool gaya main Naina.” She looked at me furrowing her eyebrows. “Aaj tum ekdum kayamat dhaa rahi ho Ms. Naina Agarwal.” I so wished to call her Mrs Naina Sameer Maheshwari, but I couldn’t do it without revealing my feelings. And I can’t do it, so for now, only Ms Naina Agarwal will have to do… Now her cheeks were crimson red in color & she looked away as if calming herself. I smiled in victory.
“Naina… main kabse kuch pochna chahta hun tumse…” I desperately wanted to know how she’d got this pink saree. “Main jaanti hun tum kya jaanna chahte ho. Yahi na ki maine yeh pink saree kahan se li aur kaise li.” I nodded & she continued, “Jab uss din hum mall mein mile the tab maine dekha tha tumhe iss saree ko ghurte hue. Jab wahan se nikle tab bhi tumne palat kar iss saree ko dekha tha. Bas maine tab hi mann bana liya tha isse kharidne ka. Main jab mummy ke saath mall gayi Diwali shopping ke liye tab maine kharid li yeh saree… Tumhe surprise dena chaahti thi, isliye nahi bataya. Ummmm… waise kaise lagaa surprise???”
I wanted to show her my reply by kissing her, but we had already reached my house. “Iska jawaab main tumhe acche se baad mein dunga Naina. Abhi ghar aa gaya hai…” I parked the car & opened the door for Naina… I offered her my hand & she gladly took it. We stood there at the entrance of my house hand in hand. She was observing the house keenly. “Andar chale Naina???” She nodded & we entered my house together. Nanu was sitting on his wooden rocking chair, eyes closed & listening to the songs on radio as usual.
Naina was nervous again & I blinked my eyes in assurance. She calmed just a little. “Nanu… Hum aa gaye…” I said breaking Nanu’s sweet sleep. He smiled hearing my voice & got up. We both went towards Nanu & I introduced Naina, “Nanu… Yeh hai Naina Agarwal… Mere saath office mein kaam karti hai aur… aur… woh… woh…” I stuttered a little, when Nanu completed my sentence, “Tumhari girlfriend…” I looked at Naina to see her reaction. She lowered her eyes in shyness… I looked at Nanu & he winked in return… God… What was my Nanu upto???
“Naina… Yeh hai mere Nanu… Mr Jaiprakash Maheshwari… mere mummy-papa… mere best friend… mere sab kuch…” Naina moved a little ahead, bent a little forward & touched Nanu’s feet… I wasn’t surprised but Nanu definitely was. I knew she would do this. Nanu blessed her wholeheartedly, “Jeeti raho beta… sada khush raho aur meri iss buddhu ko bhi khush rakho…” We chuckled at his blessings & were happy… “Naina beta… Hamari ghar mein ladkiyan pair nahi chuti… Toh aage se pair mat chuna… tum bhi mere liye mere Sameer jaise hi ho… toh tum bhi mujhe Nanu hi bulana… thik hai beta…”
Naina nodded with wet eyes, “Happy Diwali Nanu…” “Arey Naina beta… Tumhari aankhon mein yeh aansoon kyun?” “Nanu… Maine kabhi mere Nanu-Nani yaa Dada-Dadi ko nahi dekha… Sirf unn sab ke photo hi dekhe hai… Aaaj aapko dekhkar mujhe aise lagaa jaise mujhe mere Nanu ko dekhne ki icchha poori ho gayi…” Nanu too had some tears in his eyes & he asked Naina to come forward & he hugged her. My eyes watered at the scene before me.
My Nanu & Naina together… they were my strong pillars… “Aap log mujhe bhool gaye…” I whined a little to lighten the mood… Nanu chuckled & gestured me to hug him with his other hand. I & Naina were hugging Nanu together, when his Rahu-Ketu entered with Preeti & Swati, “Hume bhool gaye Nanu…” “Arey Rahu-Ketu aa gaye tum log bhi… Yahaan aao sab bacchon…” Nanu called the others too & we all had a group hug together… now my family was complete with Nanu, Naina, Munna, Pandit, Swati & Preeti… and of course Naina’s parents too…
“Bacchon… tum sabko Diwali ka yeh tyohar bohot saari khushiyaan laaye… Hamesha aise hi saath mein haste rehna… khush rehna…” Munna & Pandit introduced Swati & Preeti, who took blessings from Nanu… Ramdhari brought snacks & sweets that Naina’s mother had given us… It was delicious, “Arey Ramdhari… Yeh sab toh tumne subah nahi diya tha?” Ramdhari replied jovially, “Nanaji… Yeh toh Sameer bhaiyya laaye hai abhi…”
Nanu looked at me, “Naina ki mummy ne aapke liye yeh naashta aur mithai bheji hai Nanu… Wohi Ramdhari ko di thi abhi hume dene ke liye…” “Arey waah… Naina beta… Kya yeh farsaan tumne banaya hai?” She nodded & I was in awe of her… “Woh… Nanu maine mummy ki help ki thi sab farsaan aur mithai banane mein… Har saal ka routine ho gaya hai ab toh…” I was staring at her which didn’t go unnoticed by my friends…
We finished all the snacks that was brought from her place… We all kept chatting for some time, when Naina asked Nanu if she could make a small rangoli at the entrance of our house. “Nanu… maine aate waqt dekha ki ghar ke aangan mein koi rangoli nahi hai… Toh kya main rangoli banaa sakti hun???” I was totally stumped at her request… “Usme poochne ki kya baat hai Naina… Yeh ghar ab toh tumhara bhi hai… Toh jao… Rangoli banao aur fir diye bhi lagaa dena beta… Ramdhari… Ramdhari…” Nanu called Ramdhari, “Ramdhari… Naina ko jo bhi chahiye hai, woh usse de do…” He turned towards Naina, “Jao beta… ghar ko sawaar do” I too got up but Munna & Pandit had dragged me down back on the couch.
Preeti & Swati joined Naina to make rangoli… Ramdhari gave whatever was needed by the girls & left to prepare for dinner. Nanu went to his room to freshen up. “Sameer… Kuch hua hai kya? Hum jab se aaye hai, main dekh raha hun tum kaise Naina ko dekh rahe ho. Kya chal raha hai Sameer?” I looked at my best friends & told them everything about the feelings that I had for Naina. I told them that I’m in love with Naina… I asked them to help me plan her birthday where I would reveal my feelings for her & propose her.
Nanu joined us & everyone was happy with my plan of proposing her on her birthday… they all agreed to help me too. “Ummm… Nanu… Aapne bataya nahi ab tak ki aapko Naina kaisi lagi?” I asked the question finally which was at the back of my mind constantly since Naina arrived here. He smiled genuinely, “Naina se acchi jeevan saathi tumhe kabhi nahi mil sakti Sameer… Mujhe tumhari pasand par naaz hai… Bas jaldi se isse hamare ghar ki bahu banakar le aao…” I was very happy that Nanu liked Naina & wanted her to be my life partner… I wanted that too… but I would’ve to wait till her birthday.
Naina, Swati & Preeti came in the living room after finishing the rangoli in almost half an hour. They went to freshen up whereas we went to take a look at the rangoli that they’d made. We were awestruck with the rangoli pattern that was done near the entrance. It was beautiful just like the girls. As it was getting a little dark, I switched on all the lightings & went to help Ramdhari to bring the diyas. But I stopped short to see Naina already bring lighted diyas in a tray… I went forward & took the tray away from her so that she could walk comfortably. My friends followed suit & took the trays away from their girls.
We stood holding the tray of diyas & the girls took diyas one by one & started keeping them near the doors, windows & even the rangoli… There was one diya left on my tray, which Naina took & gestured me to walk down with her. We placed the last diya together at the tulsi plant that was planted in our garden near the entrance.
When I looked at her, she looked stunning in that light of diya…
My Naina was the light of my life…
She was the one to fill my life with happiness…
And I wanted her permanently in my life soon…
Well… the night of Diwali isn’t finished yet…
Some more surprises to come…
