I placed the bowl of popcorn down on the bed and I sat down. Megan sat opposite me, lying back against all my pillows. I had started staying at home again. My Mom had gone to France on a business trip and would not be back for several weeks, so Megan and I pretty much had the house to ourselves. There was though about posting wolves around my house, but I talked him out of it. It looked as though we had nothing to worry about with our shadow.
"I swear this shadow works for the CIA or something," She said.
"I imagine he's like James bond," I added.
"I bet he has like top secret equipment, like you know those guns that shoot out ropes with hooks so you can climb up walls,"
"And he's like a ninja that jumps from roof tops and lands in the splits," I laughed.
"I wonder if he's like a lone ranger or if he works for a secret corporation," She said.
"P.P.P," I giggled.
"What?" She asked.
"Princess protection program,"
We both threw our heads back and laughed, until we cried. When he laughing died down I just looked at her.
"I missed this," I told her
"Me too," She said.
There was a moment of silence before she spoke again.
"So I have this theory, but you can't tell anyone," She said.
"Oh GOD. What?" I asked.
"Well ever since the hole prince Dalton incident, I have been thinking. What if The shadow isn't doing this because thy feel sorry for us but because....."
"Because," I encouraged.
"Because they, you know, like you," She mumbled.
"Like?" I asked, hoping that was not what se meant.
"Like, like like, not just like," She said.
"Like like, what, why?" I demanded.
"Well he was not too concerned about the rest of us that day, but he clearly followed you out to the field because of how quick he got the body, he must have been really worried about you," She said.
"But I'm Brison's mate," I said.
"I don't think they care very much about that, I mean look at all they have gone to keep you safe," She insisted.
I started to think about it. She very possibly could be right. I quickly jumped off the bed and walked over to the window, finding something to change the window.
"It's too hot in here," I said opening it and pushing it out a little, letting in the light breeze.
I stood beside it, letting the cold air cool me down. It went right through me, giving my the shivers. This was nuts.
"This can't be happening," I mumbled.
"What'll I tell Brison?" I asked.
"Nothing. You tell him and Brison will be out for his head and we can't loose him. You seen what could have happened to night if it were not for him. We wouldn't have even made it to tonight. We need him," She said, getting off the bed and coming over to stand in front of me.
"But I can't lie to Brison," I said, putting one hand on my hip and the other on my forehead. I turned around trying to started pacing a little.
She caught my arm and pulled me back to look at her.
"You won't be lying," She told me, trying to calm me back down.
"You're not having an affair or anything, you're just trying to survive. It's perfectly understandable. I do not agree with cheating, but your cheating. I just want you to live and desperate time call for desperate measures," She told me, holding my shoulders and looking into my eyes.
"Ohhh, Megan what are we going to do?" I asked.
"Carry on as normal. We deserve to have the same opportunities in life as anyone else. This shadow is helping us. I don't who they are or how to thank them, but I am grateful they are helping and I'm going to throw it back in their face by ruining it. We never asked them to do this, so we'll just have to go with it," She said.
"What if your wrong. What if he doesn't. What if he really does just want to help," I babbled.
"I have never come across anyone who works this hard, puts their own ass on the line and goes this far just to help. People need a motive to do the kind of things he's done. Motives like love-"
"Oh you're crazy," I cut across.
Just as I said that, a sharp, powerful wind blew in, howling for our attention. We quickly turned away and cover our eyes in case anything blew into them. It came in and swirled around the room, making sure it was known. I travelled around all my things, around Megan. Me. It completely engulfed us. As soon as it had came in, it was gone again and we were left standing there, confused as to what had just happened. It had been such a calm night. I looked to Megan. She clearly though it was supernatural too. Wind's like that do not just happen. I began walking over to the window to close it and Megan followed. I reached out and went to pull it in, but she stopped me. Her eyes were fixed on something on the window ledge. She pushed it back open and reached out. I leaned out too and looked down, to see a small, long, rectangular box, that you would present a necklace in. It was cover in a soft black velvet with small diamonds stuck on like stars. She handed it to me and pulled the window in and locked it closed. We both just stared at it. She then handed me an envelope.
"This was underneath it," She told me.
I opened the box first to find the most beautiful necklace I had ever seen. I was on a white gold chine, with little, but strong links. Sitting on the soft velvet and hanging on the chain was a sparkling ruby, shaped like a drop. around the edges was white gold, decorated with small diamonds. I gasped.
"Oh my gosh," I whispered.
I rushed over to my bed and sat them down. Megan followed and sat opposite me. I held up the envelope. It had my name on it, in black swirly ink, it was from gothic movie. With great care I opened it. I pulled out the folded letter and opened it. The writing was just as beautiful as writing on the envelop. I held it up so I could read it.
" Dear Elianna,
I am dreadfully sorry I have not yet introduced myself. It would be best for us all if I did not reveal who I am just yet. I hope you trust me. I have nothing but your safety in my heart at this very moment, so you have no reason to fear me. This small gift is a peace offering from me to you, personally. I want you to know how I will protect you, to the best of my ability. I picked something I believed could match something as beautiful as yourself. All I ask my dear, is that you wear it and do not take it off . Let it fall before your heart and carry our alliance. I will always be near you, so there is no need to fear, for I shall always come to your rescue. To answer Megan's question as to how you could thank me, all I wish is that you continue going to school, as it is the life you deserve and I promise to protect you. If you are at all sceptical, just remember how much I have already done, I know I plan on doing what ever it takes. I plan on seeing you very soon, when all this is over.
Much love,
Your Shadow"
"Still think I'm crazy?"
