Chapter 6

We walked in, pushing the wooden doors. And everything was scattered across the room. There were rows of bunk beds, two doors at the end of the cabin with a wardrobe in between. We walked on the creaky wooden floorboards as I feasted my eyes on every detail.

"Hey guys, welcome the new girl! Amara Shine!" Thomas yelled, and a few people said a simple hello.

"Coral, won't you say hello to the new demi-god?" Elizabeth asked. A girl sitting on a lower bunk, reading a book, got up.

She had messy bangs, big soft brown eyes, and a mossy/watery scent to her. The girl's hair swept her shoulders and it was darker than the night sky.

"Hi," she said shyly, "I'm Coral, but call me Cora. I'm a daughter of Poseidon. Nice to meet you,"

"Uhm—hello," I said, "I'm the daughter of—uhm,"

I stayed quiet, a bit embarrassed.

"So, you want to have the bottom or top bunk?" Thomas asked, cutting in.

"Top bunk,"

"Okay, You can sleep on top of Cora then," Elizabeth shrugged, pointing to the bed that Cora was sitting on. I nodded.

"So this whole place is like a big room with random people living here?" I said.

"Basically, but not everyone stays here all year. Sometimes a few months, half the year, etc," Cora explained, walking back to her bed.

"Anyways, " Elizabeth continued, and we walked to the end of the cabin. There were two doors and a big wardrobe. The two doors must lead to changing rooms. There were also two big wooden doors on the wardrobes and many drawers with names on the bottom.

"Here," Elizabeth said, tossing a dagger to me. I nearly dropped it on my foot.

"What am I supposed to do with it?"

"Carve your name on a blank drawer, you can store your stuff in the drawer. Well, if you brought anything," Thomas replied.

"You better not leave any scratches on my dagger. It's the dragger of Artemis and Athena, gifted by the two goddesses themselves,"

"Forged by my dad's hands, Hephaestus," Thomas chuckled.

I glanced at the shiny reflection of the blade, seeing my face in the reflection. Wow, my hair is really messy.

"Can I trace my name with a tracer and carve it out after?" I whined, not wanting the carving to look like a hot mess.

"It doesn't have to be perfect," Thomas said, shrugging.

"Yeah," Elizabeth said, " just be yourself,"

Be me? But my true self is...odd, and my mom doesn't like odd. So, others will hate odd too. Right? I pushed away the thought of my mom saying that, and they were right. It doesn't have to be perfect. But it still should be. I gently carved my name out with a few tips from Thomas.

"Trying making the M curvier," he pointed out, "to give some personality,"

"Got it," I replied, and Elizabeth yawned, glancing at her watch.

"Oh shoot! We're going to be late for our drills, Thomas!" she cried, and Thomas panicked.

"C'mon let's go!" he shouted, scrambling to his feet.

"Drills?" I asked.

"Each demi-god has drills at different times, to practice their powers," Elizabeth explained, I blinked.

"You have powers? But you're a granddaughter of Athena,"

"We'll talk later, byeee!" Thomas yelped, and they left the cabin. I blinked blankly, sighing.

Great, that's probably the last I would ever hear from them. They probably only hung out with me because Chiron asked them to give me a tour. And I'm now alone. Again.

Then suddenly Hannah burst through the door.

"Hannah?"

"Oh hey, Amara!" she chuckled, walking towards me. Act normal.

"Hi, do you stay in Cabin #11 too?"

"Yep, you're new right?" Hannah asked, I nodded.

"Yup,"

"I'm going to the weapon shed to get more arrows. Want to come with me? And you get to pick a weapon with you," she said, I bit my lip. Sharp and deadly weapons? No thanks. But I wanted to try to make some allies, so I agreed.

We walked out of Cabin #11 and onto a smaller trail. We finally stopped at a big wooden shed. It was quite large. Not as big as a cabin but pretty big.

" Let's go inside," Hannah said, opening the door for me. We wandered inside and there were weapons hung across the walls. Swords, blades, spears, lances, and even an ax! There were also bins full of weapons with name tags on them

"Pick something out," Hannah suggested, grabbing some arrows. I slowly walked over to the bins and finched at the fact everything was so sharp. Nope, I am not going to lose a finger today. I thought and was about to turn around when I saw a shiny gleam. I turned back.

I carefully dug it up and it was a dagger. Not like Elizabeth's but it was perfect. I ran my finger along its blade and gripped it firmly at the handle. It wasn't that sharp but it wasn't dull either. It was just about sharp enough to stab someone in the arm. And it wasn't too big, just the right size to fit my tiny hand. Hannah gasped at the sight of me holding it.

"Y-y-you want that one?" she asked, I took one last look at it. It was perfect and that's coming from a socially awkward eleven-year-old.

"Yes," I replied firmly, confused at why Hannah seemed uneasy at the fact I wanted this one. Then I noticed a label on the handle, it was a nametag, Alecia Keys. I froze, realizing that this dragger belonged to Hannah's friend. Who died this morning, I shouldn't have this.

"Actually, never mind, I shouldn't have it," I sighed, putting the dagger back in the bin but Hannah stopped me.

"Alecia always liked to share," she chuckled heavy, " she would want you to have it,"

"Are you sure? I don't want to—disrespect Alecia's memory," I squeaked, my heart pumping.

"I'm sure," she replied, her eyes looking red and sore. I could hear her quietly sniffling. I felt terrible, no one should lose their best friend. If Farrah died...then I would never forgive myself.

Then in the pit of my stomach, a fire sparked. An unstoppable fire. No, things will end badly. I tried pushing that feeling, that fire, away. But I couldn't. I wouldn't. People had died from this "poisoner" and I knew more would die soon if this person were not stopped. I didn't know why but I felt like I knew this poisoner would never stop. That person is going to kill, and they probably mean it. I didn't know this for sure, but it was in my gut. Awful things are coming to Camp Unspeakable.

I had to do everything in my power to find out. Everyone needed to know the truth. I know I say childish and dumb but when I get set on something, I don't like to give up so easily. I couldn't push away this fire that sparked, never again.

I glanced at the dragger. I shall average Alecia Keys...
