Chapter 20
After talking with Eleos, I wandered around camp, bored. I noticed a few kids that were with Hannah and Chiron. I walked over, curious.
"Hannah, what's going on?" I whispered in Hannah's ear.
"Oh it's just our godly drills, these are my half-siblings," she replied, focusing on Chiron. The tall centaur was speaking a different language, a quite confusing one.
"Can anyone tell me what I was saying?" Chiron asked, and Hannah's hand shot up quickly.
"You were saying, I am Chiron, trainer of all heroes."
"Correct! Your language detection is getting better, Hannah!" he nodded, and I blinked.
"One of my powers is to learn and speak many languages without ever hearing about them." she explained, "My dad, Hermes, was the creator of writing and such so...my powers link to him,"
I gasped in amazement.
"Cool!" I exclaimed, learning something every day, "by the way, have you seen Thomas or Elizabeth?"
"Oh, they're with the Hephaestus' kids, working on their van. I think they're working up in the north of the camp," someone said, I nodded.
"Thanks!"
I traveled up north and found a group of scrawny kids with a van. Or some kind of unfinished van.
"Oh hey, Amara!" Thomas said, noticing me, "Hey, Freddie, pass me the screwdriver,"
I noticed all of the kids here had scrawny legs and needed leg braces or crutches to walk. But their skill made up for that, they worked together like an outstanding team, and their hands were quick to move like iron.
"Guys," Elizabeth said, who was reading a manual, "meet Amara!"
A few heads perked up, but most of them kept working.
"Hi, I'm Iggy!" a girl with pale skin and large braids said, "I'm the person who leads the metal-working with the others, nice to meet ya!"
"But everyone knows that Iggy has a really good knack for a wretch and bolts," Thomas laughed, and Iggy smirked.
"There's nothing I can't fix with a wretch," she replied, throwing one in the air and catching it. I took in her details, she had soot all over her face, a yellow bandana, and her brown-colored braids were up to her waist.
Then a boy in crutches like Thomas, waved to me.
"I'm the person who does all the blueprints! I am Freddie! But you can call me Freddie the Teddie!" he grinned, puffing up his chest.
"Right," Thomas laughed, placing his hand on Freddie's shoulder, "cuz' we all know you still sleep with a teddy bear when you're sixteen,"
"Ay! That was supposed to be my secret!" Freddie yelled, we all broke out laughing.
After we managed to collect ourselves, we started to chat while the Hpehaestsu kids worked.
"So is this the van for quests that you told me about?" I asked Elizabeth, and she nodded.
"Yup, I'm just going over some driving rules for anyone when there's a test drive, " Elizabeth explained, then she glared at Thomas, "that means you, fire boy! FOLLOW THE LAWS OF DRIVING!"
"Sorry darling but I can't make any promises," Thomas chuckled, Elizabeth rolled her green eyes.
"Ugh, you are such a hot-head,"
"Speaking of hot-heads," Iggy said, glancing up at Thomas, "your hair's on fire by the way."
"HUH?!" Thomas yelped, realizing that his hair was bursting into flames, "I need water—"
Thomas spent the next five minutes running around until Freddie gave him a water bottle. Thank god he was fire-proof. After that everything was pretty low-key, Thomas tried flirting with Elizabeth, I passed some loose bolts to Iggy, and Freddie dropped a hammer, nearly hitting his foot. I can relate to him.
"So, do you guys have a name for the van?" I asked, Iggy raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"I dunno, like something fancy—"
"WAIT!" Freddie shouted in excitement, "I know the perfect one, Knox the third—"
"NO!" we all yelled at the same time. I put on my thinking face.
"What about Samuel?" I asked, Thomas gave me a funny look.
"Samuel?"
"Oooh, can we call the van Sammy after we're finished building?" Iggy giggled, and Elizabeth slapped her face in anger.
" Why are we naming a van?!" she hollered, groaning.
"Cuz' it's cool," I shrugged, "plus—"
I stopped, a throb waving over my head. I tried to contain it while the others were talking but it feel so strong. Beads of sweat dripped from my forehead, the pain getting worst.
Finally, Elizabeth noticed something was wrong.
"Amara, are you okay?" she asked, I nodded. I'm fine, I'm okay. But my body racked with pain as my head throbbed. It was unbearable.
"Amara, are you sure?" Iggy asked, "You're tearing up–"
"I just have a bad headache, I'm fine," I rasped and coiled myself. It'll pass, I'm okay. Then tears started to form from the corners of my eye, I wiped them away, I can't show them that I'm a baby. But my body gave up. Small tears streamed down my cheeks and I felt sick from the pit of my stomach.
"Amara, you DON'T look okay. I think you're sick," Freddie said, worried. Everyone started to notice my weird behavior and kept bothering me. The heat was getting to me and everyone was overwhelming me. Suddenly my eyes drooped and I couldn't hold back. I let my eyes rest, I'll only rest for a minute. Just a quick nap, I love sleeping and taking naps. Right? I couldn't remember, everything was foggy to me. Just a small rest...and...huh, I forgot what I was about to say...
