Chapter 17
I was almost close to the ground, the moonlight shining over my body. This is it, I thought. This is the end of my life. No one even claimed me yet, because I was going to die. I opened my eyes, if I'm going to die, I might as well look at the stars. Then suddenly, I disappeared, I was no longer falling from the sky. I appeared on an oakwood tree, clinging onto the branch. So, naturally, I screamed. I mean, who wouldn't freak out if they appeared on a tree and didn't know how to climb down?
"HELP! HELP!"
"Amara?!" a voice cried, I glanced at the ground. It was Lucas, Eleos, and Chiron.
"Thank god! Help me down from here!" I yelled, SNAP! The branch slightly snapped. I freaked out even more. Sure it was ten feet and I was pretty tall but I didn't like the idea of falling.
"Amara—uh, stay put!" Chiron warned, suddenly Elizabeth and Thomas ran up to us.
"Oh, my Graces! Amara, you're alive?! I thought you fell to your death!" Thomas shouted, I rolled my eyes. Gee, thanks a lot, Thomas!
"I really don't want to fall!" I hollered, Elizabeth put on her thinking face.
"Amara, when you starting falling from the sky—"
"Not my finest moment," I confessed, my arms growing sore.
"Yes, but when you were inches away from hitting the ground—"
"You like teleported!" Lucas exclaimed, "You like—glitched!"
"Yeah, right in the moonlight!" Eleos shouted, sharing a backward glance at Chiron. Huh?
"Amara, you glitched in the moonlight perhaps if we let some light in, you will glitch again!" Elizabeth suggested, Chiron nodded.
"I agree on that—"
"You guys want to bet my life on that?!" I yelled, "Well, I'm not going to—"
Suddenly the branch snapped even more, willing to break at any moment. My hands were sore and tired from dangling in the air for too long and I was getting a splitting headache with everyone bossing me around. Amara, go do your moon glitch thing! Or, Amara, I'll go get a ladder, just wait! And, Amara, just jump!
I was tired, frustrated, and angry. I just wanted to go home...with my mom and Farrah.
"Can everyone be quiet?!" I shrieked, and everyone blinked at my sudden frustration. Then SNAP! I screamed, duh. Then I appeared on Chiron's rump, wait—what?!
"Amara, you freaking teleported—again!" Elizabeth cried, I widened my eyes. WHAT?!
Lucas helped me down from Chiron's back, and then it was time for questions. From me and everyone else.
"Is teleporting a power, Chiron?" Lucas asked, his goat legs wiggling, "Also what was satyr raid about?"
"Was there another demi-god who had this power?" I asked, worried. I really didn't want to be the only one to have this "moon glitch". Chiron looked uncertain, glancing at Eleos like he needed to talk to her.
"Guys, we had a long day," Elizabeth explained, "we should go back to our cabins for some rest,"
"I agree," Chiron nodded. I was disappointed that Chiron didn't answer our questions, especially since it was about me.
"Hey, Amara," Lucas whispered.
"Yeah, what?" I grumbled, frustrated again.
"I smuggled in some PJs for you as Cora asked, but if it's too small you can ask for a refund. Well, for the right price," he replied, I rolled my eyes.
"Gosh, thanks, Lucas. Read the room,"
We went our separate ways, Thomas and I went back to Cabin #11 while Elizabeth went to Cabin #12. We found some people sleeping or dripping with blood on their shirts, but nothing unusual. I found Cora and Hannah sitting on their bunk in silence. They looked tired, worn out, and looked strangely pale.
"Hey guys," I said, breaking the ice and taking off my shoes, "boy, am I tired. Tonight was a crazy night, am I right?"
No reply, they just stared longly at each other. I started to realize something was wrong.
"Are you guys okay?" Thomas asked, laying down on his bed.
"Yeah, and where's Kassie?" I asked, "Oh right, she's in her cabin. Silly me—"
"Kassie isn't in her cabin," Hannah mumbled, I blinked. I stood there on the wooden and creaky floorboards in confusion.
"Oh okay, is she outside?" I asked, "I want to ask her about something."
"She's not here anymore, Kassie didn't come back," Cora muttered, her eyes brimming with tears. Wait, don't tell me—Kassie can't be...
"What do you mean? She made too many book references?" Thomas teased yawning. Suddenly he shut up, stopping his jokes, and stayed quiet for once. Then at that moment, Thomas realized what I didn't.
"I'm sorry, Amara," Cora said, sighing. I froze, hunched back. But Kassie is smart and good at fighting, right? H-how could she just—be gone? No, I refuse to believe it! Kassie can't just die off by a harpy!
"Amara?"
"But how?!" I exploded, "She's a child of Athena, Kassie's smart! I refuse to—"
"Yet she has Athena's pride and her father's pride." Hannah scowled, "Kassie thought she could take on the world and thought the harpy was no match for her. She had too much pride, and tried to take the harpy on...That's all I can say,"
"I'm going to bed," I murmured, walking to the changing room. I grabbed some fresh clothes from my drawer and trudged into the changing room. I slammed the door so hard that made Thomas' crutches scatter all over the floor. Sighs.
As I slipped into my new clothes, I thought about Kassie. Was she a good friend? I'm not not going to answer but she did share some nice times with me. My eyes grew sore and puffy when I thought about how we left things off. It was such a dumb fight and I guess Kassie was right, Cora did move the water with her anger. But at what cost?
My eyes brimmed with tears, I was also a bad friend. But what about my talk with Marcus? He was right, it was backhanded of me to think that Kassie could have poisoned the camp. Kassie wasn't that kind of person. But to think of it, who could have poisoned Camp Unspeakable? What's their motive? And why? And it's like what Leah said, satyrs are usually calm creatures, why attack the camp? It's not worth it! Satyrs are drunk but aren't that drunk. I was alone with my thoughts when someone knocked on the door.
"Hey, are you done yet?"
I realized that I'd been sitting on the wooden floor for several minutes, sniffling with tears. I scrambled to my feet, strolling out of the changing room, embarrassed. I walked over to my bunk and climbed up the ladder. I lay on my bed, staring at the roof of the cabin. All the lights flickered off, meaning it was past curfew. There were no, goodnights or Thomas, shut up, you're making too many cat puns again. It was just so quiet, but I knew no one was falling asleep. I silently counted all the campers present in the cabin. Two people were missing, meaning they were gone just like Kassie.
After a while, there was some snoring and everyone was sleeping soundly with their teddy bears. But I couldn't sleep. Go figure. I was tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Finally, I sat up, gasping for air. I panted, looking around the cabin. I can't do this, I need some fresh air. Maybe I should try my moon glitch thing. I climbed down the ladder, Cora sleeping on the bunk below. I shoved my cold feet into my sneakers, scrambling all over the cabin, half-blind—trying to find my glasses. I tip-toed past all the sleeping campers, opening the large wooden doors. I went outside and froze at the sight of a full moon.
It was more breezy, even if there were barely any wind before. No clouds stood in the way of the moon, letting it shine with the starry night. I closed my eyes, the moonlight bouncing off my tanned skin. I'm ready...
"Here goes nothing," I mumbled, spreading my arms. Then FLASH! I did it, I did the moon glitch!
