Chapter 15

It was the next day and dinner was over. I was walking down the nurse's office's hall, dropping something off for Eleos since she asked me.

"Hey, Amara!" a voice shouted, I glanced back to see Kassie.

"Oh, hey Kassie!"

"What are you doing?" she asked, walking up to me.

"I'm just dropping something off," I grunted, lifting the heavy box in my arms, "I think they're new med-kits. I don't know why it's so heavy though,"

"Here, let me help you," she offered, grabbing a corner of the box.

We placed it on a table and opened it. There was a bottle of pills, needles, and some bandages. Also some kind of heavy machine thing inside.

"I think this got shipped to the wrong box. I'll give it back to Chiron later. By the way, what are you doing later today? It's past dinner," Kassie asked, and I dropped a bottle of Advil. I was meeting Marcus to talk, and Marcus still wanted to stay hidden.

"I'm going to take a walk around camp," I lied, picking up the bottle. Then something fierce shot through my chest, I should ask her about something from yesterday.

"Hey, Kassie, why were you baiting Cora last night?" I squeaked, my voice quiet.

" What?!" she demanded, suddenly becoming mad. If I'm already asking, I should go all out for it.

"I'm being serious, Kassie. You made Cora angry yesterday so the water in the lake would shift," I mumbled, "you probably don't even have a grudge against kids of Poseidon, you just did it to bait Cora on."

"And so what?!" Kassie snapped, being too proud "you have to make tough calls as a demi-god, especially as a child of Athena!"

"But—"

"You never made a tough call before, eh? Probably because you still don't know who your godly parent is!" she shouted, "Probably since no one wants to claim you! Ever thought of that?"

I was shocked and enraged. One second ago, Kassie was being all friendly to me, then she's trash-talking me like it's a rap battle! Elizabeth was so kind to me, yet Kassie is being so rude. That's so rare from a child of the goddess of wisdom.

"Kassie, stop it," I demanded, gritting my teeth.

"Amara, you stop it. I just helped Cora reach more of her abilities."

"So you make insults to her face and make her mad so she can save someone's butt? She could have done that without the baiting part! Cora is totally fine on her own, she's capable of anything!" I yelled, defending on Cora's behalf.

"One day, Amara Shine, you'll have to make a tough call and I won't be there to guide you. Bye," Kassie scowled and strolled away from me like a diva. I was alone again, with some bottles of pills in my cold hands. I think I just messed up.

I finished up, grumbling and cursing Kassie before I went back to the old building to meet Marcus. I found him relaxing on a seat in a row.

"Great, you're here, I'm so bored!" he grumbled, looking gloomy as ever.

"Well, you would be less bored if you wouldn't mope around and just tell the Apollo kids that you're still alive! Well—sort of," I replied, cringing.

"Well—"

"Look, I want to tell you something, I think I have a suspect!" I said, and Marcus widened his eyes

"WHO?!"

"Okay...Kassie,"

He blinked and stared in confusion, hoping I was joking around.

"What the Styx?! Amara, she's your friend, this feels so back-handed to me! How?!" Marcus protested.

"But it fits! Kassie is very intelligent and has a grab for trickery! She can get too proud at times, doesn't it seem too good?" I asked, and Marcus bit his lip.

"Kassie does tend to have really bad hubris—wait, what am I thinking?" he said, "Amara, this is bonkers even for you! Isn't Kassie your friend?"

I stayed quiet, hunched over my back. Oof.

"I can't—well, it's only been a few days, we're not besties—"

Suddenly we heard screaming and yelling outside the auditorium.

"I've been found!" Marcus cried, I turned back, glaring. He cleared his throat, "I mean, we've been found!"

Then some more shouting and clashes of weapons roared over.

"Marcus, I-I think there's an attack outside! We need to help—"

"You go," he snapped, looking more ghostly, "I can't go back..."

"Marcus! Are you going to do this right now?" I scolded, "People need our help!"

"Well, I'm never going back to my old life!" Marcus said firmly, I rolled my eyes. I decided not to rely on Marcus, and I rushed out of the auditorium.

I burst through the door, with my dagger in my hand. And I saw some people with—goat legs? Are they satyrs? From the corner of my eye, I saw Leah getting grabbed by a satyr.
