Chapter 14

We walked down some trails, full of muck and mud as the rain slowed down. I've been waiting very patiently, but Elizabeth was getting on my last strand of insanity.

"So," I said, "when are you going to—"

"I was raised into slavery, Amara," she blurted, and I widened my eyes. That was not what I was expecting from her.

"W-h-hat?"

"When I was very young, Athena killed my birth mother in protest of my dad having a whore. My grandmother made sure nobody knew about the problem. My father was some of the earliest kings of Athens, Athena didn't want shame to her name, that's why this isn't talked about in the Greek myths. I was kicked out and shipped off to be a slave for a rich family, which was horrible for a child at these times," Elizabeth spoke softly, and I gasped. I had so many questions, like wouldn't that make Elizabeth the Queen of Athens or whatever? What's a whore? And slavery still existed back then? But I just said:

"Athena did that?! That's cold!"

"I was just the poor slave," she sighed, "the family I was enslaved with a daughter too. Agatha was the name. Her older brothers were already married, so Agatha and I grew up together,"

Elizabeth paused, having this distant stare in her eyes.

"Anyway, Agatha was so sweet, very kind for a girl back then if they had a slave. We were like sisters," Elizabeth shouted proudly, grinning ear to ear. Then she suddenly looked wary, her voice quiet, "but at the age of twelve, Agatha married another man from a rich family..."

I stared in shock and utter disgust. WHAT?! Agatha was twelve for heaven's sake!

"Only twelve?!" I cried, grossed out.

"Those were the rules back in that era. Those rules didn't apply back then back like these days," she explained, looking discontent. I just then remembered how Elizabeth was born in the "old days".

"I had to be the one who prepared Agatha for the wedding," Elizabeth said, gasping. She clenched her fists, shaking with fear, trying to hold on, "Agatha told me she was scared of marriage, and all I could tell her was that she had to be brave. I couldn't even bring myself to look into her eyes,"

Elizabeth looked like she was on the verge of breaking into tears, shaking fearfully. This isn't fair for Elizabeth at all or Agatha! I dreaded saying this.

"And then what?" I asked in a squeaky voice, trying not to cry myself.

"I had to watch her get carried off to her wedding, I didn't even get to say goodbye to Agatha. And that just did it for me. I ran away after Agatha got married, I just lived in the woods and streets of Greece. By now, I found out about the rumors about Athena having a granddaughter, not by Erichthousius' wife,"

I almost snickered at the name, Erichthousius, pfft. That's like the worst name to name your child, and why would Athena even name him that? And how do you even pronounce it? But of course, I didn't say that, that would have been disrespectful.

"Did it break you?" I asked, saying that instead.

"I was—confused for some time until I went hunting out in the woods one day,"

"I didn't know you like hunting," I said, shrugging.

"I used to be a hunter of Artemis, remember?"

"Oh yeah, how did you become a huntress of Artemis—"

"I'm getting to that part, Amara," Elizabeth groaned, and I chuckled sheepishly.

"Sorry,"

"Like I was saying, one day, I went hunting and came across a Nemean Lion cub. An offspring of the famous Nemean Lion, you know before Heracles killed it. I had to face it alone,"

"But weren't you thirteen at the time?" I asked, Elizabeth nodded.

"Yes, but can I just get to the point!? You keep interrupting me!" she snapped. Elizabeth took a deep breath, "Anyway, I had my grandmother's wisdom and brains. I tossed a spear into its eye, blinding the nasty beast before I took the final kill."

"Whoa," I exclaimed, stunned.

"That finally caught the attention of Athena and Artemis. Athena told me she was proud of me...but that didn't cover up my scars..."

Elizabeth lifted her jeans to show a nasty scar on her left thigh. Whoa.

"Oh, my—did the Nemean Lion cub do that to you?"

She didn't reply.

"Then the goddess, Artemis, showed up with some of her hunters, "she told me that she would like to have me in the Hunt as I showed great skills,"

"Is that how you got into the Hunt?" I asked. Then the rain stopped, yay!

"Yes, I gladly took up the offer and Artemis granted me immortality as long as I stay a virgin forever. Then both Athena and Artemis also gifted me a dagger in their blissful name,"

Elizabeth stopped, throwing the dagger at a dead stump, it landed right in the center.

"But that doesn't explain how you ended up in Camp Unspeakable instead of the Hunt!"

Elizabeth sighed as she grabbed her dagger back.

"In the 1800s or something, I was still in the Hunt, I met a young boy. A centaur in fact,"

"You guys dated?! Yucky!"

"Oh Tartarus no!" she yelled, "Robin and I would never!"

"Robin...?" I asked, cautious, "that sounds a little funky,"

"Robin wasn't his real name, he was a centaur, but his favorite bird was the robin. Hence the nickname,"

"Wow," I said, shaking my head, "you gave him a nickname? You didn't even give Thomas a decent nickname other than fire boy. And it's Thomas!"

She nodded agreeably, looking a bit ashamed. Okay, get ready, this is probably the part where the climax raises and then falls. But my life is not a story plot at all, wink, wink.

"Our friendship grew and I snuck out at nighttime when the other hunters were asleep," Elizabeth explained, "My worst regret was never telling Artemis the truth about our friendship. I just hoped that Artemis would never find out and that our friendship would stay—well, a friendship."

"Wait," I paused, "aren't all centaurs horrible creatures other than Chiron? Chiron was able to train himself to be wiser than the rest,"

"Yes," Elizabeth agreed, "I thought Robin would be different but how I so wrong...One night, Robin wanted our friendship to expand,"

"Wait, what?!"

Elizabeth told me the twist-turning tale with such vivid words that I could nearly picture how it went down...

"He told me I should leave the Hunt and Artemis. He told me I should be his wife and we should run away together. He said I was his, and that he owned me. Robin tried to make a make on me but I stopped him in time,"

"WAIT, THIS ROBIN DUDE TRIED TO KISS YOU?! GROSS! ALSO, HE'S SO RUDE AND DIDN'T EVEN ASK YOU! IT'S YOUR BODY, YOUR CHOICE!" I yelled, screaming at the top of my lungs until my throat ran dry, "You're the woman here!"

"And...after I rejected him...Robin got mad..." Elizabeth gulped, swallowing her remaining pride, "he slapped me across the cheek,"

I dropped my jaw wide open, oh hell nah.

"Robin, the dumb and stupid centaur hit you?! Okay, he better die or I'll do it myself!" I cried, enraged.

"And so what?!" Elizabeth snapped, "people got away with that kind of stuff back then! Especially men!"

We stood on the muddy path, and I was dumbstruck. I quickly realized that this butt-kicking and immortal Elizabeth was afraid of getting hurt. She was scared of Robin owning her. I glanced at Elizabeth, who went completely pale and as white as a ghost. She looked on the edge of fainting.

"Well!" I started, trying to cheer her up, "If I was you, I would have slapped him right back! And even harder, no questions asked!"

She had a slight chuckle before she turned to me.

"You know, Amara, you have the most interesting personality. You have a split personality." Elizabeth said, "You can be nervous, scared, and weak at times. But at other times, you are charming, kind, and bright. You can shine so bright, perhaps brighter than the sun and moon if you allow yourself! Yet, you let your anxious side control you, why is that?"

"Oh, uhm, I—"

I had no answer for Elizabeth.

"So," I said, eagerly trying to change the subject, " what happened after that?"

"Oh right, after that horrible incident, I ran right to Artemis. I didn't care if she might be angry with me, I wanted protection." she replied, "Of course, Artemis was boiling mad but what made her even angrier was the fact Robin hit me. No one and I mean, no one, can lay a finger on Artemis' hunters, they're off-limits."

"Then what did Artemis do?" I asked, curious.

"Artemis killed Robin, the centaur was no match against the powerful goddess.

"Ha!" I snorted, all smug and proud, "Karma is like a force of nature! I'm glad he's dead, Robin got what he deserved!"

"Indeed, Robin was not a very nice person, I hope he's in Tarartus for what he did." Elizabeth agreed. That should have been the end, but Elizabeth's life was just so...unfair to her.

"But," she started, her voice growing cold. Very cold, "I also got my karma. Artemis kicked me out of the Hunt for my dishonor. I-I must respect her wishes, and there was a male in the picture, so...yeah. Though I got to keep my immortality, I had to leave my home as a broken woman...again."

"WHAT?! B-but," I stammered, stunned. Elizabeth didn't want this to happen, how was it her fault? Okay, sure, Elizabeth started a friendship with a male without telling Artemis but she didn't want it to lead to a relationship. This makes me so flipping mad!

"That's not fair," I muttered under my breath.

"Life isn't fair, Amara. I left without protest,"

I stood there like, wow. Elizabeth left without a fight just to show how mature she truly is. Respect.

"I decided to leave my life as a hunter of Artemis behind and in doing so, a new name came to me. Elizabeth was popular at the time I believe."

"Wait, you're name isn't actually Elizabeth?!" I cried, shocked, and Elizabeth just laughed.

"Ah shucks, of course, Elizabeth isn't my real name! My name is in Greek, Amara!" she said, "I don't remember too much about my actual name but it was Eusebia after the goddess. Though, I'm much more familiar with my current name, Elizabeth,"

I wanted to make a dumb like, how do you even spell or pronounce that? But it wasn't the time for that.

"So this how you got to Camp Unspeakable now that we're done with the story-telling?"

"Oh heavens no! I made trios, deals, and broken allies in the early 1900s! I crashed into ballrooms just for some supplies!" Elizabeth chuckled, "centuries later I made it to camp and met Thomas."

"Do you regret anything about Robin?"

"Not really, I guess," Elizabeth said, "I've been bottling and hiding my past for years, you're the first one to know, Amara. I think I just needed to talk to someone about my life, you know, letting it all out."

"So no," she repeated, slightly smiling, "then I would have never met Thomas or you, Amara."

I grinned brightly, looking up at the glowing moon.

"You know, I think it's almost midnight, past our curfew. Want to walk me to Cabin 11?"

"I'll take you up on that offer," she smiled, "so..."

We walked away, chatting all the way to our cabins. I think I just made a friend other than Farrah...got to check that off my bucket list. I feel like, I can trust Elizabeth. Like she's my friend...a good friend. That's what I thought all night long that night, and I felt good. Really good for once.

"You're a good friend—I mean for Thomas and Cora, of course," I stammered.

"You too, Amara," she chuckled.
