Chapter 13
Here's an update for you, life is good. Okay, not that good, but I made some really good allies at Camp Unspeakable! Why is it even called Camp Unspeakable? I refuse to call them friends, Farrah is my only friend...I also met someone called Kassie Cookson! She's one of the few children of Athena! She's eleven like me, she's super intelligent, and she likes saying weird unrelated facts at random times! So, that's mostly me, but still! And I know what godly drills are now! It's basically a training session with your half-siblings to expand your powers. I kind of thought it was like a drill. Like, stop, drop, and roll!
It's been a week and the activity of the Poisoner has died down, but I've been having more vivid dreams. So Marcus and I keep brainstorming. I've also grown with my allies. But most of all, Hannah. She's popping in and out with me to hang out or go to the archery range with me. And not to brag, okay, I LOVE to brag sometimes. But I'm getting fairly good with the bow and arrow, it's pretty nice. And now I can talk to Elizabeth, Thomas, Leah, etc, without freezing in a huge ball of panic and fear! (Still working on that!)
I've even started some training with Elizabeth or Leah, but Elizabeth still scares the living out of me. And speaking of Leah, there's been an issue. So, Leah and Elizabeth kind of hate each other, I don't know how I didn't catch on. And for some dumb and REALLY stupid reason, they're tugging me on like some war treatise. I act as some kind of object for them to fight over if that makes sense. Thomas and Cora are just like the bystanders, Elizabeth, Lucas, Hannah, or anyone, who will break up the fight. It's kind of scaring me, but I, of course, never show it.
"Amara!" a voice yelled, I shot up.
"Huh?!" I snapped quickly.
"It's just me," Kassie replied, I sighed.
"Sorry, I've been coming in and out these past few days," I said, standing up. We were in Chiron's office, dropping some letters off.
"Who are you writing to?" I asked Kassie, and she smiled.
"My dad, he's a big-time weaver back in the Netherlands. Ever heard of Harry Cookson?"
"Unfortunately, no," I giggled, and she laughed. I dropped my letter, I bent down to reach it, but Kassie picked it up for me.
"Who are you writing to?"
"My mom..." I muttered, glancing at the letter. Life was going smoothly at camp, my mom was always making life harder for me, and the last thing I wanted on my mind was her. I don't why, but I've felt hateful when I think about her. I just hope she didn't call the cops and a S.W.A.T team to get me yet. I just wish she's okay and she's happy, with that dumb Logan guy or whatever.
We dropped off our letters and found Cora and Hannah.
"Hey, y'all!" Cora said, greeting us.
"Don't say that word, I have a grudge against it," Kassie shuddered, then a shadow loomed over us.
"Hi, what's your grudge, huh?" the voice hissed.
"HOLY MOTHER OF GEEZERS!" Hannah swore, there was a fourteen-year-old girl. A girl with crazy black hair, pale skin, and some insane eyes. They were gray but looked blinding if that makes sense.
"Oh, hey, Isa," Kassie replied, annoyed. Isa, her voice sounds familiar.
"Hehe," Isa laughed, turning to me, "who are, huh? You're a little young to be a demi-god,"
"I'm Amara Shine—"
"And I'm Isabelle Crookson, daughter of the goddess, Eris!" Isa laughed, crackling. She really did look like a maniac.
"You really are a crook for scaring me," Hannah scolded, "let's go, guys."
We walked away from the giggling girl and moved along to Lake Poseidon.
"Oh great, it's raining," Hannah huffed as speckles of water fell from the sky.
"It's technically called sprinkling actually," Kassie and I said at the same time.
"Aren't you a daughter of Hermes, can't you just run fast enough to avoid getting wet?" Cora asked, and Hannah rolled her eyes.
"My dad's power from that is mostly from the winged sandals he wears. Though, Hermes can run at an incredible rate," Hannah replied, "and aren't you a child of Poseidon? If my dad can use winged sandals, can't you slow down the rain?"
"Pff," I giggled alongside Kassie. Cora frowned, dodging the question.
"Pick up the pace, we're supposed to meet up with Elizabeth and Thomas, "
"Aw, c'mon, it was just a joke, Cora. Lighten up a little," Kassie chuckled, Cora rolled her eyes. We arrived at the hillside of Lake Poseidon, seeing Thomas and Elizabeth—with Leah and Jarvis. Oh, Sugared Honey Iced Tea.
"Uh, guys—"
"You are so dramatic!" Elizabeth argued, "You are such a—"
Cora and Hannah covered Kassie's and my ears.
"You are a total _____!"
"What the ____ is wrong with you guys?!"
"Don't speak to Elizabeth that way, you _____!"
Yep, there were some FOUL words in play. But Cora stopped everyone.
"Guys, shut it!" she yelled, "let's try to keep things kid-friendly for Amara's and Kassie's sake!"
"Eh," Kassie shrugged, "I've heard worst,"
I wonder what happened this time...sighs, this is just getting dumb.
"Sorry, I can't help that Leah is a total drama queen," Elizabeth scolded.
"At least I have beauty unlike you, you're just a stale million-year-old granny,"
We gasped in shock, exchanging glances. OH, Leah is going to get it now.
"Hey, I think this is a good time to go," Thomas chuckled nervously, tapping Elizabeth's arm. But it was no use, the wrath of Elizabeth had begun. Even Jarvis, son of Ares, who's a WAR GOD, seemed a bit scared. But Leah was bold. She stood her ground, like a true lady, I guess she gets her bravery from Aphrodite. But Elizabeth was no coward either, she clutched her belt tightly. Her right hand was on a throwing knife, while her left was on the dagger of Artemis and Athena.
I would hate to know how deadly the dagger of Artemis and Athena's throw would be. It was, of course, sacred to both goddesses, so its throw would technically be DEADLY.
"You know," Leah started, her eyes shining with jealous pride, "you should never undermine the power of my mother. I could charm you to drown yourself in that lake if I wanted to, Elizabeth,"
"Leah, you're being too proud," Jarvis warned, but Leah just edged us up to the top of the hill.
I gasped, my dream, this is it.
"Well," Elizabeth replied, looking stern, "and you should not judge the wisdom of Athena. Or do all children of Aphrodite like to judge?"
"You will take that back," Leah said, gritting her teeth, "where are my manners? You WILL take that back, please,"
I rolled my eyes, I didn't care about the conflict anymore, I focused on Thomas and Elizabeth. I bit my lip, what if they fall to their doom? Again?
"Guys," Thomas said, I wanted to scream, "let's just calm down—"
I shrieked as Thomas' crutches fell onto the grass while Thomas slipped from the hill. He plunged into the lake, and the winds started to pick up, and heavy rain fell.
"Thomas!" I yelled, but my scream sounded like a whisper compared to Elizabeth's scream.
"He's going to drown!" Jarvis shouted, stunned.
"Not on my watch, I'm the best swimmer compared to all of us," Elizabeth said quickly, not wasting a minute, "I'll go,"
"That would be suicide!" Kassie protested, "There's a huge storm coming and it's Lake Poseidon!"
"Thomas can barely walk, let alone swim!" Elizabeth cried, glancing into the dark waters of the lake. I just had to say something.
"Elizabeth, don't—NO!"
She dived head-first. I raced to the edge of the hill, reaching for her hand. Only, inches away, Elizabeth's hand slipped away from mine. I watched as she crashed into the harsh water.
"NOOO!" I hollered, falling to the ground. Just cry, just cry and be helpless. That's how I've always been, letting others go the rest. I rely on them too much. Not today.
"Leah and Jarvis, go tell Chiron or Eleos!" I ordered, stepping up, "Hannah, go get aid from the Apollo kids!"
They were shocked at my grumbling orders but did so. Now, Cora, Kassie, and I were left on the hillside.
"There's barely any moment in the water and this cursed rain isn't doing us any good!" Cora cried, and Kassie nodded.
"There still might be a chance they're alive!" Kassie urged, "let's go to the shore for a better view of the lake's shore!"
I grabbed Thomas' crutches, hoping that Thomas would still have them by the time this is all over. We rushed to the shore, the rain getting heavy.
"I still can't see them!" I yelled, worried. My hair was wet, my clothes drenched, my greasy shoes soggy, and my newly repaired glasses fogged up with water. But that didn't matter. What mattered to me was that Elizabeth and Thomas came back alive. Seconds flashed by, and still no sign of moment.
"Cora, you must use your water powers," Kassie snapped, Cora stared at her blankly.
"What?!"
"Did I stutter?" Kassie asked, her tone growing sour, "You're the child of Poseidon, clear the water for them,"
Up until now, I've never seen Cora use her powers, I nearly forgot that she's the daughter of Poseidon until now.
"But I've never expanded my powers to a max!" she protested, but Kassie urged her on.
"Yet I'm a child of Athena! You're surrounded by water, there's water in the sky, and this lake is named after your dad! You should be the most powerful here!"
"Cora, not to pressure you, but this is the time to explore your power!"
"I'll kill somebody!"Cora cried, looking panicked.
"Ugh! Is there always something with you Poseidon children?!" Kassie shouted, and Cora widened her eyes.
"Excuse me?! What is it with the children of Athena hating the children of Poseidon?! That feud is between our parents, not us!" she hollered, her dirt brown eyes glowing with rage. I gasped, I've never seen Cora so angry. She looked enraged like she wanted to kill someone. She was deadly.
"I always hated people who think I was lower than them," Cora said bitterly, then I noticed some shift in the water. Wait, it's like Cora's anger is fueling her to expand her powers. To shift the water itself! I glanced at Kassie, who was smiling under her lip. Wait, was she baiting Cora?! More water shifted, the rain became lighter, and a hand shot up from the water.
"Elizabeth!" I shrieked, jumping into the water. I trudged through the murky waters as Elizabeth swam closer. She tossed Thomas' arms to me.
"Here," she sighed breathlessly, the water up to my waist, "got him,"
Elizabeth looked exhausted, her skin turning pale, her clothes wet. But Thomas' eyes were closed, you could feel his body dropping cold.
"I-is he...?" I stammered as we heard feet pounding on the sand.
"You lassies, alright?!" Chiron yelled, I sighed in relief. Leah and Jarvis got Chiron and Eleos, thank goodness!
"Kind of but not really!" I shouted back as Elizabeth and I carried Thomas' unconscious body back to shore. Thankfully, Hannah came back with the Apollo kids who looked like they were ready to start CPR on Thomas.
"Are you guys okay?!" Hannah cried, and I gave a thumbs-up.
"We're not dead, so that's good,"
"Is Thomas okay?" Elizabeth asked quickly, still looking pale.
The Apollo kids nervously inspected Thomas, but he was still breathing.
"It's like the Fates are watching over him, he's good enough to be waited upon," an Apollo kid said, "let's load him up,"
We watched as they carried Thomas off in a mini stretcher, wheeling him away.
"Jarvis, Leah," Miss. M said, looking bitter. Which is a rare thing, back in school, Miss. M was rarely known to be strict or sour, "I would like to have a talk with you two in my office."
"Yes, Eleos," Jarvis replied as the trio walked away. Chiron turned to face us.
"Elizabeth, that was a very reckless thing to do, jumping in to save Thomas could have drowned you both—"
"Not to be rude, Chiron," I coughed, clearing my throat, "Thomas can neither walk nor swim, he would have had no chance without Elizabeth."
"That is mostly true," Kassie added, chiming in, "drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death. Thomas stood no chance without the guidance of Elizabeth,"
"Or Cora," Elizabeth said, glancing at her.
"I understand, but that is no excuse, I shall not let another demi-god go down," Chiron huffed, his eyes having this distant glaze. He coughed, clearing his throat, "I think you should all go back to your cabins, it's almost past curfew."
Chiron galloped away, Hannah, Cora, and Kassie leaving too.
"C'mon, Amara," Elizabeth said, about to leave. Something had to be said.
"I need to talk to you about something, Elizabeth!" I blurted, wanting to lift something off my chest.
"Sure?" she shrugged.
I walked up to her, dreading to say this.
"I get you are immortal and all, but it's kind of selfish that you don't involve yourself in others since they're mortal," I explained quickly, sweating, "but, I think you should! And how did you even get to be immortal?!"
"What?" Elizabeth asked, confused. I sighed, that was A LOT at once.
"Look," I said, trying not to say like a big meanie, "not everyone around you is immortal and I think you should—uh,"
"Finish your sentence," Elizabeth said, looking stern. I gulped, please don't kill me. Actually, please do.
"I think you should take notice of that, you and Leah fight for the dumbest reasons!" I cried, letting myself shine in the moonlight, "Your feuds go on forever and ever! You can live for eternity, cherish it, and not go pick on someone your size! How did you even get your immortality?!"
I exhaled a huge breath, anxious. Elizabeth sighed.
"My background isn't pretty," Elizabeth warned, "I guess it's time to talk...about my life as a granddaughter of Athena."
We walked alongside the shore, straight into the forest, where I learned about the story of Elizabeth...and how unfair it was.
