Day 22: July 20 (Monday)
~ Wario's POV ~
"That was enjoyable, don't you think?" Toad says as he walks beside me.
"Yeah, despite the fact that some of us were half-asleep," I reply.
We had just come from playing "Capture The Flag" with a bunch of other campers. Specifically, our cabin was playing with Cabins D, E, and F. Our cabin was teamed up with Cabin F, and we lost after a good thirty minutes.
I don't really mind though. I'm not as big of a sports enthusiast as the guys I hang out with are, but I don't hate sports either.
"I'm hungry," I state out of the blue.
"What?" Toad laughs. "But, we just ate breakfast before the game."
"Yeah, but I'm always hungry," I tell him. He should know by now.
"True," Toad responds. "But hey, I think we're free to do anything for the next two hours. Let's head to the cabin and eat chips or whatever."
"Sounds good to me," I say.
By the time we get to the cabin, Bones and Boo are already chilling there. Pretty surprising how they got there before us.
I grab a giant bag of potato chips from a pile of my junk and open it. Toad sits across from me on the floor, reaching over and grabbing handfuls of chips at a time.
"Hey, you want some?" I ask Bones and Boo, holding up the bag of chips.
"Nah, I'm gonna sleep," Bones answers. He then turns over in his bed, facing away from us. I guess that's the last we'll hear from him for awhile.
"Sure," Boo says. I throw the bag of chips towards him. He takes a few chips before throwing the bag back at me.
"So, is this all we're gonna do for the time being?" Toad questions. "Just sitting around?"
"Well, I wouldn't mind," I reply. "But don't worry, Toad. You'll get your daily overdose of sports soon enough."
Suddenly, Birdo and Dixie enter the cabin.
"Hey, everyone!" Birdo grins. We all exchange hellos with the two girls.
"So, what brings you here?" I question.
"Oh..." Birdo shoots a glance at Boo.
"I forgot to mention it. They're just here to hang out," Boo informs Toad and I.
"What happened to Bones?" Dixie asks.
"Just asleep, no big deal," Boo answers.
"Ooh!" Birdo sees the chips and slides down onto the floor in between Boo and I. "Can I have some, please?"
"Yeah, go ahead," I reply.
And so, my morning break is spent with Birdo, Boo, Dixie, and Toad. Bones sleeps the entire time.
I do notice that during our chat, Boo seems more comfortable than usual. He speaks up more, laughs along with us, and just seems to have more fun. I'm happy for him, but also surprised. What makes him decide to drop his usual antisocial image now of all times?
Whatever it is, I'm glad he's beginning to open up. I can only hope that Bones is the same way.
~ Mona's POV ~
"It's so frustrating!" Daisy complains.
"Well, it does suck," I agree.
Daisy's pissed because her cousin Peach, who sounds pretty annoying based on what Daisy says about her, told Luigi that Daisy has a crush on him. And it isn't true. But if I were Daisy, I would've already punched Peach in the face by now.
"Do you know how it feels when everyone thinks you're like something but you really aren't?!" Daisy rants. "And now Luigi thinks I like him, but I DON'T! Not in that way!"
"Do you want to get revenge on Peach?" I ask. "I could help you."
"... Sure, that would be great. The only problem is, Peach only did this as revenge on me. I got rid of her perfume which she treated like a baby, remember?" Daisy replies. "I hope that she won't do any other horrible deed as an act of revenge. But still, I hate to see her so full of pride and success. We'll get revenge on her but not anytime soon, we need to catch her off-guard."
"Sounds good to me," I comment.
Then, the guys come to join us. By "the guys", I mean Diddy, Koopa, Luigi, and Yoshi. They make rather good company if I say so myself.
"So Daisy, you and Luigi huh?" Diddy grins. Luigi turns to glare at him, he's probably embarrassed.
"Don't believe everything you hear," Daisy states.
"Oh, I don't know. You and Luigi together isn't a bad idea, to be honest," Koopa says. Luigi glances at Daisy apologetically.
"Guys, drop the subject. Whatever you're thinking is wrong," I speak up in an attempt to prevent the guys from making Daisy pissed. "Daisy doesn't have those kinds of feelings for Luigi, even though we wish she did."
"Thanks, Mona," Daisy smiles at me.
"You suuure, Daisy?" Yoshi gives me a teasing smile. "Deep inside, you might know that what Peach said is true..."
"No!" Daisy quickly replies. "That's impossible. I don't have a crush on Luigi, and I never will!"
An awkward silence soon takes place. Daisy clears her throat before talking again.
"Sorry," she says. "That came out sounding angrier than it was supposed to. But I'm in a really embarrassing position now, so I hope you understand how I feel."
"Yeah, we do," Koopa assures her.
"Well, let's change the subject then," Yoshi suggests.
We begin chatting about Daisy's birthday, which is in three days. As we hang out, I can't help but think about Daisy's short outburst.
I noticed that for a second after she snapped, Luigi looked... Hurt. Maybe he was feeling something else, I don't know. But if he was hurt, then why? It isn't like he even has feelings for Daisy or anything... Right?
~ Koopa's POV ~
My circle of friends has been chatting for nearly half an hour by now.
"Well, I think we've spoken about my birthday enough already," Daisy laughs. "What now?"
"Oh, I have an idea," Yoshi states. "Let's think of nicknames for each other!"
"And also the other campers," Mona snickers.
"Sure," I reply. "Sounds fun."
"Okay, I know the first one," Diddy says. "Luigi is Tomato."
"Huh?" Luigi immediately turns to Diddy.
"Well, the reason is pretty obvious. Your face gets red like a tomato so easily!" Yoshi exclaims. We all burst into laughter.
Just at Yoshi's remark, Luigi's face becomes red.
"Umm, Koopa is Turtle," Mona says.
"How am I a turtle?" I grin, amused and curious.
"I don't know, but you're always so chill," Mona states. "Kinda like a turtle".
"Seems legit," I respond. "I approve."
Okay. So I'm Turtle, and Luigi is Tomato. I know what Daisy should be called.
"Daisy, you're Candle!" I smile.
"What? Why?" Daisy asks.
"Because today is when we're thinking of group nicknames, and it's near your birthday," I explain. Weird logic, but I feel like it would be cool to call her Candle.
"And also," Mona starts. "Because you want to set Peach on fire!" We begin laughing once again. That's something we do really often when we all get together- laugh.
"Good idea," Daisy tells me. "I'm Candle."
"Mona can be Knife Lady," Luigi speaks up. We all glance at him in surprise.
Then, we laugh even harder than the previous times.
"Knife Lady?!" Mona exclaims in between breaths. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Well... Your face just always looks like you're ready to stab someone," Luigi quietly admits. "I dunno, I just thought of it now."
"I love it!" Mona beams.
"We do, too," Daisy adds.
"Banana Brain?" Yoshi suggests, glancing at Diddy.
"Sounds a bit like an insult, but I'll take it," Diddy replies.
"I think it's obvious enough why that name suits you," Mona states.
"Because my thoughts always revolve around bananas?" Diddy says.
"Yeah!" Yoshi grins.
"Yoshi, you're the only person here who has yet to have a new name," Koopa tells Yoshi.
"I have an idea," Daisy smiles. "You could be called... Fridge!"
"OH," Yoshi laughs. "I get it."
"You're never out of food," Diddy states.
"I don't ever plan to be," Yoshi says.
So, I am the Turtle. My closest friends are the Tomato, the Candle, the Knife Lady, the Banana Brain, and the Fridge. We're the weirdest people ever, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
~ Toad's POV ~
"Wario, truth or dare?" DK asks. We had just started playing it, while eating grilled chicken for dinner.
"Truth," Wario shrugs. "I'll pick dare later."
"Hmm," DK thinks for a moment. "Would you rather give up food for the rest of your life, or give up drinks?"
"Wow, that's hard. Maybe drinks?" Wario replies. "Okay it's your turn, Toad. Truth or dare?"
"Dare," I respond.
"Okay... Invite your sister and her friend over to stay with us for a bit," Wario says.
"Seriously?" I glance behind me, where Toadette is talking to Peach.
"Of course. It's a dare," Wario states. I sit still for a few seconds. DK and Wario know that I'm not on speaking terms with Toadette at the moment.
"They're not actually gonna sit with us, I hope you know that," I reply.
"Do it anyways," DK tells me.
"Fine," I finally stand up and slowly make my way towards Peach and Toadette. I sort of overhear their conversation.
"I think that starting in September, I'm going to try out for volleyball at school," Peach states. "I'm going into 10th grade, and college is coming up really soon. Being on a team would look good when I'm applying for colleges."
"Yeah, true," Toadette responds. "I'm the worst at sports though. I guess I should just keep my grades up if I want a chance to be in a good college."
"Hey," I join their conversation. "Do you two wanna sit with my friends and me? Just a friendly offer, no need to suspect anything."
Peach and Toadette look at each other for a quick second before Toadette turns to me, smiling.
"No thanks, Toad. We were about to meet with some OTHER friends," she tells me in a not-very-kind tone of voice.
"Yeah, sorry," Peach adds.
"Umm, it's okay," I smile at both of the girls before returning to my seat.
"They said no?" Wario asks me.
"Yeah, obviously they did," I answer. "And we knew they would. Did you only dare me to do that in an attempt to humiliate me?"
"... Kind of," Wario admitted. "But hey, I've never really talked to them. It would have been interesting if they sat with us."
"Maybe," I shrug.
"Is your sister still mad at you?" DK questions.
"Seems like it," I say. "But ever since we fought, she has been more sociable and has made more friends. It's like she's really trying to prove me wrong, while still not talking to me."
"Well, you did get a little too mad at her that day," Wario replies. He and DK know just about everything regarding my situation with Toadette.
"Yeah, that was a bad move," I agreed. "But come on, it isn't only my fault! She's overreacting now and holding a grudge on me for the very first time in our lives."
"Toad, all three of us here have siblings," DK began. "And judging from what you've told me, you and Toadette are closer than a lot of other siblings or even twins. She can't be mad at you forever, but maybe you're doing the right thing by leaving her alone for now."
"I hope so. And that means you two should stop daring me to do things that involve her," I joke.
"Fine, but it was just an experiment," Wario defends himself. I glance at Toadette again, who is now far away from us.
"I kinda miss her," I mutter under my breath. "She's my other half."
~ Waluigi's POV ~
"Oh, there she is!" Mario says excitedly. "I'll talk to you later." He runs off to talk to Rosalina. I shake my head. He never gives up.
"Hey," Toadette waves as she and Peach approach me.
"Hi," I reply. I guess Mario and I have become friends with them recently. We chat occasionally.
"Where's Mario?" Peach asks me.
"Over there," I point to Mario and Rosalina, who are kind of far away from us.
"Ugh," Peach frowns. "She irks me. What is he doing with her?"
"Flirting, probably," Toadette responds. "It gets annoying after awhile."
"Yeah, it gets annoying when he does it with HER!" Peach faces me again. "Does Mario have a crush on her or something?"
"Umm, I don't know," I tell her. I'm only partly lying though. He hasn't said the actual words "I like Rosalina", but he kinda implies it.
"I hope he doesn't. That would totally ruin everything," Peach laughs.
"You like him?" I question.
"Hell yeah I do," Peach answers. "If you ever find out who he likes please tell me because if it's me, I'll be freaking euphoric. But if it's someone else, I'll know who doesn't deserve her position."
"Peach... It's okay to crush on people. But, don't be all mean or anything," Toadette says.
"I guess I can try," Peach sighs. Anyways Waluigi, I'm sorry. You probably feel awkward right now."
"Oh, no it's okay," I reply. Suddenly, Mario is back.
"Hi! Chatting without me now, are you?" he says. "No need to do that anymore, I know you guys missed me."
Our conversation continued from there. And during the whole thing, I was thinking "Camp Tanooki is a strange place full of strange people".
~ Diddy's POV ~
After eating dinner, I go to the lake. It's where Tiny and I have been hanging out for the past few days. This is usually our only chance to chat because it's when Dixie, who doesn't want me to interact with her sister, is least likely to see us.
I've been talking to Dixie too, but I don't have to be all secretive about our friendship. In fact, I'd say that I'm equally close to both of the sisters by now. It's kinda funny because they aren't very similar.
Tiny is already sitting down with her feet in the water by the time I get to the lake. I go and sit next to her.
"Hi," she says.
"Hey," I reply. "What are you reading?" I had noticed that she was reading a book until I came around.
"Umm," she closes the book and sets it on her lap. "Just one of those teen romance novels. Nothing much."
"Oh, okay," I nod. "How was your day?"
"Well... Nothing bad happened. How about yours?" Tiny asks.
"Pretty ordinary as well, I guess," I answer.
Then I remember that I've been waiting the whole day to tell Tiny something. Now, I just have to say it correctly... This will be exciting.
"What's up?" Tiny questions. "You're suddenly quiet." Oops. Oh well, I guess I'll spit it out now.
"I've been meaning to tell you," I start. "Someone in this camp has a crush on you."
"You're joking," Tiny replies without any hesitation.
"I'm not," I tell her honestly. "Someone here thinks you stand out... In a good way." Tiny lets out a laugh before looking at me.
"You have no idea how hard that is to believe," she states.
"Well, I just wanted to inform you," I say. "If you don't believe me, then that's your problem."
"You're really..." Tiny pauses. "You aren't lying?"
"No," I respond. "I mean, I know I seem like the kind of person who makes a lot of jokes. But I swear, I'm being honest right now."
"Okay then," Tiny sighs. "Who is it then?"
"I can't tell you that yet.""Why not?"
"I already told you that someone likes you, be grateful!"
"Ugh, fine. How about a hint?"
"Hmm," I think of a hint. "He's someone who has never been to Camp Tanooki until this year."
"... That's unfair!" Tiny complains. "All of the campers here are new!"
"You got me," I laugh. "Okay, I have a real hint. He's not a very neat person."
"Umm, thanks I guess. I don't know any of the guys here too well yet, but I'll take the hints that I can get," Tiny shrugs. "Am I supposed to walk into each of the boys' cabins and see which ones are messy?"
"I dunno," I laugh. We go silent for a moment as Tiny simply looks up at the stars in the dark sky. Then, she gives me a frustrated look.
"Would you please tell me who it is?! I wanna know!" she exclaims.
"Sorry, but I won't. Not anytime soon," I glance at her apologetically. "Besides, you gotta respect the guy's privacy."
"That's true," Tiny says before blushing in embarrassment. "I'm sorry. I'm just not used to people liking me that way. No one ever has. Dixie has had a lot of admirers though. I'm just surprised, what does this guy see in me?"
"Well, why don't you ask him that when you find out who he is?" I suggest.
"What?! That would be weird!" Tiny laughs. "Whatever, I'll stop making such a big deal out of it eventually."
"Try guessing who it is," I tell her.
"Nah," Tiny shakes her head. "It's fine. I'd rather not."
"Okay then," I respond.
Leaving Tiny in complete curiosity is gonna be fun.
I'm a horrible person, and I'm sorry. You guys had to wait for this chapter for more than two. Freaking. Months. Well at least this chapter isn't short... Right? I really hope I haven't gotten any worse in writing. I've been really busy lately because of school. Also, it took quite awhile for me to get ideas. But in all honesty, real life isn't exactly the best for me rn. Ugh. High school sucks, and I've only been in it since August. Btw go take a look at the multimedia. I made an artsy font sign for this book hehe. Also, I really want to thank you if you haven't given up on me yet. I still get followed and my books still get reads, so I'm very grateful. Unfortunately, I have no clue when the next chapter of this book will be posted. Anyways please add, comment, vote, etc. Thanks!
