Chapter 17

The summer was slowly drawing to a close. No one was ready to go back to their hometowns and away from their friends.

"I c-can't believe there's o-only two w-weeks left," Evan sighed, as the group sat around a campfire as the sun set, cooking hot dogs and s'mores.

"DAMMIT!" Jared screeched. "This is the THIRD TIME TONIGHT I'VE HAD A HOT DOG FALL IN THE FIRE!"

Everyone laughed as Jared stomped away to get another hot dog. They look at the small pile of hot dogs burning next to a crumpled piece of newspaper.

"How does that even HAPPEN?" Heather asked, as Jared shoved the hot dog nearly half-way down the toasting fork.

"Don't ask me," he shot back, plopping himself on the log again and holding the fork over the fire. Connor rolled his eyes and kissed his girlfriend's forehead.

Angie was braiding Cath's hair as a demonstration for Alex to learn how to braid John's hair.

"My goodness Alex, how hard can it be?" John laughed, as his head got yanked back again.

"I'm going my best, but you have SO MUCH HAIR!" Alex's hands were tangled in the poofy mess and he was struggling to break free from the knotted strands.

"Okay, maybe I should focus on setting you free rather than teaching you to braid," Angie said, letting go of Cath's hair and moving to help Alex free himself. Eliza smiled and took over braiding her girlfriend's hair.

Aaron and Theo were sitting next to each other, showing each other memes and TikToks and laughing together. Theo had decided that Aaron was putting in the effort she wanted, and the two were happily back together.

Peggy, Maria, Laf, and Herc were making fortune tellers and paper cranes out of the stack of newspaper used for the fire.

"I think I did something wrong," Herc said. He held up his failed paper crane, which had miraculously turned into what looked like a water lily.

"How... how?!" Peggy exclaimed, accidentally dropping her crane into the fire and grabbing Herc's water lily to examine the folds.

Squip was humming the Avatar theme to himself and meditating about 10 feet from the fire. No one really knew what to do about him, but he seemed content enough.

Michael and Jeremy were sitting next to each other with an uncomfortable foot of space between them. They were both staring at the fire in silence. John and Alex picked up on the sexual tension between them IMMEDIATELY. It was just what they had gone through the previous year.

"Hey guys," Alex said, finally freeing himself from the tangles of John's hair, "how about a game of truth or dare? We've got all night."

The others nodded and agreed. John and Alex sat down next to each other, holding hands. They knew they had to set Michael and Jeremy up. Those dorks were meant to be together.

"Squip, get over here," Laf called, patting the ground next to him. Squip slowly opened his eyes and narrowed them, humming even louder, but eventually got up and headed over.

"Alright, Connor, truth or dare?" Alex asked.

"Dare."

Alex looked at Connor, then at Jared's hot dog, which had survived so far, then back at Connor, smirking. Connor smiled back, getting the message. He stood up without Jared even noticing, because he was way too focused on not dropping this one. Connor snuck up behind him, snatched the fork out of his hand, and flung the hot dog into the fire.

"CONNOR!" Jared yelled, standing up with fury. "THAT WAS MY FOURTH ONE! I was SO CLOSE!"

"Don't blame me, blame him!" Connor said, pointing at Alex as everyone laughed. Jared shot daggers at Alex, who just smiled incorrectly.

"Calm down, short stack, I'll make you one," Connor said, grabbing another one from the package and trying to put it on a fork, but Jared grabbed it from it.

"THERE WILL BE NO MORE HOT DOGS TONIGHT!" Jared screeched, slapping Connor with the raw hot dog with every syllable.

"Oh my goodness, Eliza, truth or dare?" Connor said, laughing and sitting back down as with Jared seething. Heather giggled and kissed Connor on the cheek.

"Truth," she said.

"Name the top five best condiments."

"The best condiment is no condiment at all," Eliza said, matter-of-factly. "Jeremy, truth or dare?" She looked at John and Alex and winked at them, having the same exact idea.

"Truth."

"Got someone special back home?" she asked, smiling innocently. Jeremy turned pink and looked at his hands.

"No," he muttered. "Squip, truth or dare?" he asked, quickly changing the subject. Michael kept glancing at Jeremy with a nervous glance.

"No," Squip said, his eyes closed as he continued meditating.

"Um, okay, Laf?"

The game continued for a while, Michael and Jeremy going several times as everyone slowly picked up on Alex, John, and Eliza's plan. There had slowly inched closer and closer to each other during the night, but no other progress had seemed to be made. Eventually, the night was wrapping up, so everyone decided to head to their cabins.

Alex, Eliza, and John put out the fire as they watched Jeremy and Michael walk back to their cabin, brushing against each other every once in a while.

"I guess they'll get together when they're comfortable," John said.

"They're being totally oblivious, it's RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM," Alex complained. Eliza laughed.

"Like YOU'RE one to talk," she said. "It took you two all summer to get together. Don't judge them, they're moving a lot faster than you guys did." John and Alex laughed. They couldn't disagree.

Michael and Jeremy arrived back at their cabin. The tension between them was high. Neither wanted anything more than to be kissing the other at that moment.

"You know, I'm not really tired," Michael said, his heart pounding as he broke the silence.

"Me either," Jeremy said, the same feeling of anxiety washing over him. "What do you want to do?"

"Want to continue the game after we get changed?" Michael asked.

"Okay," Jeremy agreed. The two got changed into their boxers, both blushing and trying not to stare at the other's body for too long.

"So," Michael said, as he and Jeremy sat down on his bed, "truth or dare?"

"Truth."

Michael spoke before he lost his courage.

"Do you want to kiss me?" he asked. Jeremy breathed in sharply.

"Dare," he said. Michael moved closer.

"Kiss me."

"Never have I ever-"

"THAT'S NOT THE GAME!" Michael laughed. (AN: this was a tumblr post set up, not my own lol)

"Well, what do you want me to do?" Jeremy asked.

"What do you think?" he whispered. The two were so close that Jeremy felt his warm breath against his cheeks. He turned red, and in a rush of confidence, grabbed Michael's face and pushed their lips together.

Fireworks.
