Entry Day
The car stopped just a bit short of the camp sign. I got out of the car excitedly. "Jangmi, slow down !", I could her my mother say as she followed with my bags. I grinned widely, "미안해요. 그냥 흥분해서 그래요." (Sorry. It is just my excitement.) My mother laughed as I helped her with my stuff as we crossed into camp.
It was beautiful. People were all over & waiting to get assigned to a cabin. A counselor approached us. "저는 김기범입니다. 저는 이곳 광야캠프의 상담사입니다. 이름 좀 알려 주실 수 있어요?" (I am Kim Kibum. I am a counselor here at Camp Kwangya. May I have your name ?) I greeted him formally. "Jangmi. Bae Jangmi." Key seemed to find my name on his list. He pointed at a cabin enthusiastically, "You're in luck, Jangmi. You'll be staying in that cabin."
Mom helped me bring my stuff to the cabin before it was time she left. I hugged her close. "Don't miss me too much, Mom. I won't be gone forever." My mother laughed once more. It was a pleasant sound. "See you in a few months, Jangmi."
After my mother left I made my way into the cabin. Upon entering the cabin I was greeted by five girls. "Welcome ! I am Irene--" She pointed towards each of the others. "That is Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, & Yeri." I sat my bags down by one of the beds. "안녕하세요 저는 배장미입니다. 만나서 반가워요." (Hello, I am Bae Jangmi. Nice to meet you.)
Once I was settled in, I went for a walk. I easily tend to get distracted. I managed to bump into someone. "I am so sorry," I muttered making sure whoever I bumped was alright. Then I heard a deep chuckle. "걱정마세요." (No worries.) I finally looked at who I bumped. It was a guy with a cute eye smile. "Jangmi. You are ?" He shook my hand that I awkwardly held out. "Jeno."
Jeno & I continued to walk. I soon got used to him so I no longer was an odd mess. I had dreamt of attending this camp since I heard it opened. I also wanted to make some friends. Get over my fear that everyone will eventually abandon me, like my father had for his new family.
It wasn't long before Jeno introduced me to his friends. "You can to come to the bonfire, Jangmi. It is only the best first night here at camp." Donghyuk said grinning. No doubt he was being a bit mischievous. I smiled, "You pranked something. Didn't you ?" All I got in response was a odd laugh.
Jaemin walked with me down to the lake. "You seem sad. Anything bothering you, Jangmi ?" I was between Jeno & Jaemin in age. Just like Donghyuk. I'd only use honorifics with Mark, Jeno, as well as Renjun. "You noticed, huh ?" Jaemin sat with me. I could tell he was very affection the moment I met him.
I looked out over the lake. "You seem excited & alone at the same time. Like being here is desperately the only thing you've been looking forward to." My eyes filled with tears. I always promised to never cry over my father anymore, but I end up breaking it every time. "아빠는 저와 엄마를 버렸어요. 그는 새 가족을 가졌어요... 저는 제가 결코 관심을 끌지 않으려고 너무 많은 노력을 하고 있는 것 같아 걱정이 됩니다." (My dad abandoned me and my mom. He has a new family... I just worry that I am trying too much to get attention I'll never have.)
Jaemin probably felt horrible seeing me in such pain. "Jangmi, that is nothing to be ashamed for. You shouldn't feel guilty at all." Pathetic, right ? I knew he was right, but I couldn't believe otherwise. Why else would my father abandon me & my mom ?
Soon enough the bonfire had started. I mainly moped around while everyone talked. Will things ever stop being so bleak for me ?
