CHAPTER ELEVEN
"I'm just so angry!" I shout, pacing around Brooklynn's counsellor suite.
Like mine, her's is a small, unfurnished (completely wooden) room with the necessities. Our own duvet sets from back home creating the only difference: a lavish black and mauve combo versus an electric, teal ombré. Guaranteed, they clash but somehow, like our friendship although tested, works.
"You have a right to be! That little... little scumbag, yes scumbag, and his campers completely ruined all your stuff!" Ashlynn grumbles, hands on hips and a frown dotted on her usually glowing face.
I chuckle, Ashlynn wasn't the best at being hateful, she's just too, how do I put it, precious. With a shake of my head, I sit down beside her, smile and lean backwards so I'm now flopped across Brooklynn's bed.
"Ashley's right, although scumbag wasn't the word I was thinking of." Brooklynn combs a hand through her hair.
"You're right, I'm definitely thinking of a few choice words right now."
Brooklynn tilts her head slightly, a look of interest clouding her eyes. "Go on."
I frown. "I can't go further than reality? He flooded my dorm, ruined my stuff and my camper's and I are all sleeping wherever we can with nothing here to our name." I take a deep breath. "I'm livid, but what can I do?"
Silence lingers over the three of us for a few moments, clogs turning twice over, thoughts running wild.
"What if you can?"
I turn to Brooklynn, my curiosity peaked. "What by retaliating? Come on, we've been over this, it will just make things worse."
"Look, Lexi, Colton's mind works differently, no retaliation isn't a sign to stop, it's a sign to continue. In his mind he's winning but if there's no consequences to your actions, what's to stop him from doing it again?"
For a moment, I find myself in the brain of Colton, it's complex and most definitely confusing but I understand for a second what he sees.
"I'm not sure, this is outside of my character."
"No, It's not. Brooke's right, you should prank back, this can be you. Think of it like this: we as humans react differently to different situations, we put on a new persona per say but each persona is us, it's just our response to a different variable."
Sitting back up, I think about what Ashlynn has just said. She's right in a way, just like there is different sides to different stories there is different sides to each of us.
"I've never thought of it like that?" I say.
"Neither, but she's right, it's like fifty shades of Alexis." Brooklynn smirks.
Immediately the room is filled with sounds familiar to a pig, all of us in hysterics. Stomachs vibrating and mouths open wide, teeth shinning.
"Omg, stop!" I laugh.
"What it's true." She winks.
"God, you're so dirty!" Ashlynn giggles.
"At least I'm not boy crazy."
"Hey! I am so not boy crazy!"
"Tell that to the posters in your room." Brooklynn grins.
"I- Ugh!" Ashlynn grumbles a hint of a smile on her face.
"Okay, okay, enough hilarity, I have a problem you know." I speak up, fiddling with my fingers.
"And we've already decided the solution, so let's get on with it, duh."
"I think she means what are we going to do about the prank, Brookie."
Brooklynn blushes. "Oh, yeah, totally knew that."
Half an hour later and the three of us are hauling bags of our 'special ingredients' across the camp. Huddles of children stare at us with curiosity on route, chatting in the grassy fields or running along the sandy path past us to their next activity. The sun shines across our eyes making them sparkle slightly... with mischief.
"Hurry up! Colton will be back soon!" Ashlynn laughs, her hair whipping my face.
I spit the hair out, making a face. "Ew. Stop turning around Ashley!"
"Oops, sorry?"
I shake my head. "Whatever." I say, turning to Brooklynn. "Are you sure he's out?"
"Positive." She nods.
"And we have enough stuff?"
"No, I thought you had it?"
I gape at her.
"Of course I have it dumbass."
I roll my eyes, only Brooklynn.
"Oi! Why you running so fast?" I look over to see Braden hurdling towards us—
My body aches and I don't know whether to laugh or cry. "You're such a goof, look what you've done."
"Only for you." He winks.
Sighing half-heartedly, I pull myself up off the ground, helping Braden up like the modern-day, prince charming I am.
"Thankyou." He curtsies. "Now, what you doing?"
"You're welcome." I laugh before trying to change the subject. "Why were you running so fast?"
He looks at me suspiciously. "I was just out a run, got to keep this," he indicates to himself, "badboy at full sex god potential always."
"Oh, I'm sure."
"You avoided my question you know."
"Of course I do, that's the point."
"You're so annoying you know," he teases.
"Why thank you."
We grin at each other in silence for a moment, almost as if we're lost in a joke no one else understands.
"Lexi, stop flirting and hurry up!"
Almost immediately, my skin mimics the still sunburnt vampire in front of me while the smart bastard just smirks at me. Obviously, I glare at Brooklynn and predictably she doesn't care.
What are friends for... ugh.
"You going to tell me what you're doing or am I going to have to Nancy Drew the shit out of this?" He laughs, twiddling a fake moustache.
"Okay, one, Nancy is way to pretty for you to pretend to be her and two, Sherlock has the moustache you idiot."
Lifting his hand to his heart, he acts mock offended. "Guess I'm becoming a stalker then."
I groan lightly. "And you say I'm annoying? Okay, fine we're pranking Colton..."
Time stands still, my heart race picking up slightly. For some reason I seek his approval. Why?
"It's about fucking time."
Bewildered, all I can do is stare at him for a few moments. "Huh?"
He laughs. "God, Lexi he's only been torturing you for over ten years, I would've thought you would've done something sooner."
Huh. That was not the reaction I was expecting.
Upon presumably seeing my fish like status, he continues, "Chill, this is good. How can I help?"
At this point, dignity gone, I can only muster a smile. I'm not sure why I'm as perplexed as I am. Maybe it has something to do with that feeling of letting people down? Being perfect one hundred percent of the time? After all people pleasing only works if the people are pleased, and really, I was just sacred.
Damn. I was scared. I am scared.
The revolution rolls over me in waves, the sky brightening, becoming clearer. We are our strongest barriers. I'm not sure what I'm scared of but there's only one way to find out.
I smirk. "Distract Colton."
