Mitch

On one sunny yet windy afternoon, the world seemed at peace around a quaint house situated deep in the concrete jungle of the suburbs. The unusual three-storey house was nestled comfortably in between several boughy and tall leafy trees. A mere third of the plot area was where the house was built upon while the rest flourished with several varieties upon varieties of plants and trees that seemed to brush the sky with their extreme height and sheltered the rows of shrubs and bushes littering the green floor.

The pleasant weather outside hardly seemed to have an effect on the stuffy humidity inside the house, or, rather, that experienced by the lone person inside the house that afternoon. A rather brightly coloured red wheeled chair supported the upright posture of the man whose hand held a pen and rested on the pale sheet covering the desk ahead of him. Words bloomed onto the paper as he wrote.

Dear Mitch,

I get the feeling it would be every bit of a travesty if I never wrote you this letter. I couldn't bear to have not tried

The man scrunched up his face and scrutinized the paper in front of him. It didn't feel right so he crumpled the sheet up into a ball and landed it in an almost full dustbin. The dustbin had been the receptacle of several other crumpled up pieces of paper discarded by the man.

Frustration dawned on his face as he threw the pen on the desk, angered that it didn't write out what he wanted to express to the love of his life the way he wanted it to sound. Smoothing back his shoulder-length inky hair, he attempted a new approach as he brought out his smartphone from his pocket.

Flipping over to the messaging application, his fingers scrolled until he saw the contact name. His index finger hovered around the name, beautiful and ethereally heavenly to the infatuated man. He eventually clicked on the icon and typed, 'Hey'

He had absolutely no idea as to why he thought that could work as it seemed so impersonal to confess his love to his colleague. His eyes, however, lit up when the phone buzzed with the sound of a silenced notification and he opened the notification to dive into a conversation via the screen.

'Hey!'

'How are you doing?'

'I'm good. You?'

'Same.'

'What are you upto now, Dragon?'

He chuckled at Mitch's nickname for him.

'Oh nothing much. What about you, Sassy Grassi?'

'Listening to Scotch whine about how the random radio station he's playing is playing nothing but stupid love songs'

His blood boiled at the mention of Scott. He liked the man a lot, he did. He was amazingly talented and so friendly. His hatred for the blond baritone had risen only when he realized he loved Mitch so much and Mitch was too close to the boy. The way Mitch affectionately called him Scotch and their intimacy frightened him to no small extent, as it kept him thinking that he was far too late even though the two never seemed to show any signs of romantic interest in each other.

His deep green eyes glazed over  when he realized Mitch had said 'stupid love songs'. Did he really think they were stupid, or did he just paraphrase what Scott had said? He hesitantly texted the countertenor to keep the conversation going.

'They're that bad?'

'They're cheesy, and tacky, but I still like them a lot. Seems like Scott hates them more'

The bass singer heaved a sigh of relief as he found out that Mitch hadn't hated the love songs. Hope blossomed in his heart as he built up his courage to confide in Mitch. The screen lit up with a text notification from Mitch, which initially startled the man.

'I'm bored!'

'How about songs?'

'Ohhhhhhh, I love that idea!'

Avi smiled at the chance to send Mitch some love songs to foreshadow what he'd tell him in the future face-to-face.

'Hey, I just met you'

'And this is crazy'

'But here's my number'

'So call me maybe'

He playfully called Mitch and cut the call after half a ring. The rather annoyed but amused boy texted him.

'Hardy har har, dragonboy'

'What? You asked me to call you so'

'Next song now!'

'How do I live?'

'How do I breathe?'

'When you're not here, I'm suffocating'

'I wanna feel love run through my blood'

'Tell me'

'Is this where I give it all up?'

'For you, I have to risk it all'

'Oops, so sorry, Avi, I have to go now. We'll talk later tonight, right?'

'Sure. See ya!'

Avi felt rather sad that the conversation had ended but he was eager to tell Mitch. He swiftly picked up the pen that raced over the paper with his newfound inspiration.

Okay, to avoid confusion, the name in the title is whom the person described in the chapter wants to love and several hints will be there throughout the chapter so it won't be all that confusing before I actually mention the name. All song lyrics mentioned will be in bold.

Songs mentioned in this chapter:

'Call Me Maybe' by Carly Rae Jepsen

'Writing's on the Wall' by Sam Smith
