Start of Something...New? (1)
╚════════════════════╝

Y/N's POV:

The Cabello's and my family decided to take a trip together to this ski lodge to celebrate New Years before our winter break ended.

In all honesty, the whole reason we still talk to their family is due to the fact my little sister Emma was best friends with their youngest daughter Sofia.

Their eldest daughter, Camila on the other hand, we were the complete opposites. It's not that we didn't get along, it was more of opposite personalities.

In middle school, we were inseparable. Always hanging out at each others houses, FaceTime calls that lasted for hours, simply just enjoying life without a care in the world.

But...High School came around, the year where expectations from others mattered. Our hangout sessions lessened, phone calls started to become less frequent, everything just stopped.

I never knew why.

This resulted to her and I never really speaking to each other at school since our schedules were different. She would be in the library while I would be with my friends in our grade level class tables where everyone else would be.

That's just life I guess.

"Come on mom, why am I forced to go with the kids to the snowboarding slopes if Camila's already going to be there to supervise?" I say, never taking my eyes off the TV screen.

I was watching reruns of High School Musical with my dad since it became a tradition of ours to watch it every end of the year. In the past, Camila would watch it with us too but then...you know.

"Because Sinu and Alejandro invited your father and I to the adults party. Since the kids are too young to go to the teens party, you and Camila have to watch them." She explains as she applies lipstick. "Now hurry and get dressed."

"After this part." My dad says and nudges my side.

We were at the scene where Troy and Gabriella were picked from the crowd to go onstage to sing karaoke together. They reluctantly stepped on the platform and the guy that called them on stage, goes on the platform as well and stands in between Troy and Gabriella with a smirk.

"Hey you know what someday," My dad and I recite in unison. "someday you might thank me for this...or not."

My dad and I burst out laughing until the screen went black, making us stop. My mom holds the remote in front of our faces and places it in the dresser.

"Get dressed. Now." She orders and my dad goes to the closet to grab his dress shirt.

I roll my eyes and get up from the bed as well, grabbing my snowboarding gear from the hanger.

"Come on Sof, race you to the top!" My sister said as she held on to her board.

"You're on!" Sofia laughed. The two girls immediately sprinted to the top, leaving me behind with Camila.

Camila awkwardly trekked beside me, not saying a word as we went uphill.

"So..." I trail, trying to get out of the awkward silence. "did you pass your finals?"

"Yeah." She responds without sparing a glance at me. "Did you?"

I laugh nervously. "Barely. I didn't really study this time since I got distracted with my friends."

"Oh." She mumbles as she kept walking.

Good job on keeping the conversation flowing Y/n.

From what seemed like forever, we reached the top of the slopes and I place my board down, sitting down on top of it.

Camila does the same with her board as we watch our sisters go down the hill on their snowboards.

Camila stared off into the distance but it kept eating me alive about our past. Should I even bring it up? Do I stay quiet? It already seemed like she didn't even want to talk.

"It sucks that we couldn't go to the teens party and got stuck babysitting." I say, drawing random shapes in the snow.

"I wouldn't have gone." She responds with a shrug. "Not really my type of scene."

"Well maybe go for at least the food. I know how much you love hot chocolate on a cold day." I say and nudge her side. "Remember on Christmas when we used to drink it before we opened our presents, but then you ended up with too many marshmallows so you ended up putting them in mine?"

She nods. "I do."

"And then after we would go to my room to open the gifts we got each other and--" I ramble but she groans, making me stop talking. "What?"

"Why are you bringing up the past?" She asks, running a hand through her hair. "That was when we were kids."

"Is it that bad to reminisce a memory?"

"It is when I push the memory away from my head for a damn reason." She mutters, bringing her knees closer to her body to hold.

"Then tell me what that reason is!" I raise my voice, causing her to flinch. "For fucks sake, Karla this better be good."

"Because!" She raises her voice as well, still not looking at me.

"Because why?!"

"Because I got fed up with the teasing, alright?" She yells, finally turning to me. "I wanted to prove them wrong!"

"Prove who wrong? What are you talking about?"

"My friends at school. They saw how my friendship with you was like and they thought..." She trails but mumbles the last part and I couldn't hear a word.

"They thought what?" I urge and she shakes her head.

"Forget it." She rolls her eyes and looks back to face the view.

"No, no, no, no. You don't get to drop that bullshit ass excuse on me and leave me hanging. Again." I say, making her face me.

"Y/n--"

"No. My turn." I say and she shuts up. "We were best friends. Did all those years mean nothing to you?"

She wipes her eyes. "Of course they did."

"Then why did you throw it away like it was nothing?!"

"I can't tell you." She mumbles and I scoff.

"Typical." I say and push myself off the ground. I look at Camila once again with a glare. "Fuck you. Good luck at life."

The wind started to pick up, causing Camila and I to shiver. I look up at the sky and see the clouds around us were getting darker, making the lodge the only light source in the bottom.

I look around for Sofi and Emma but didn't see the two anywhere. They did come back up...right?

Camila cups her hands around her mouth. "Sofi!"

"Emma!" I yell out, the pit of my stomach feeling uneasy. "This isn't funny!"

"Maybe they're already in the bottom." Camila says, pushing herself off the ground as well. "I did overhear Sofi and Emma planning after they finish snowboarding, they were going to hang out in your room."

"Of course." I mutter and attach my boots to my snowboard.

The wind started to pick up once more, blowing harshly against us which almost made me fall back.

"What are you doing?" She yells over the wind. "We should be walking down, not go on our boards!"

"I'm not walking down a hill! You can go do that." I say and slide on my helmet. I see her do the same which makes me roll my eyes.

Of course.

She goes down the hill first and I follow behind. I sway left and right in attempt to pass Camila but she held her ground, going a bit faster. The wind felt like it was getting more intense, making it harder to steer my board.

I could see Camila struggling since her balance started to become wobbly. Oh shit.

I try to steer away but with the wind, it made it difficult to move. Camila's body tilted to the side a bit, but it was enough for her to fall over. She collides with me and I shut my eyes as we tumble down the hill.

After what seemed like forever, we eventually stop rolling and crash into a heap of snow. I hold on to my head in pain and see Camila was barely pulling her legs out of the snow.

I pull off my helmet. "Way to go, klutz."

She takes off hers as well. "Can you blame me? The wind pushed me off my balance." She glares. "I knew we should've just walked down the hill instead."

"I don't even want to start my new year with arguing with you." I roll my eyes and detach my boots from my board. "I'm going to the lodge to get something to drink."

I push myself off the ground and grab my board, then continue walking to the nearest entrance.

A familiar song plays in the background, causing me to slow down my steps.

I wanna be your everything, would you be my shining star?

Is that...no way. It can't be.

"Aren't you going inside? It's freezing." Camila shivers.

"And why are you still following me?" I ask and she rolls her eyes.

"You're not the only person who's hungry so move." She says and pushes the doors open. Dozens of people our age were wearing New Years accessories and were dancing as the people on stage were singing to some karaoke song.

"Baby, we can free the angry sea, No matter where we are." The duo sang and my eyes widen.

Holy shit.

As Camila past me, I see she was no longer wearing her snow gear outfit but a white dress with a fur coat.

"Wait," I call out and she turns. "I think we're in a movie."

"Wha--Woah." Her eyes widen and points to my outfit. "Weren't you just--How?"

I look down and see I was wearing a black jumpsuit but with a white leather jacket.

"Camila, we're in one of my all time favorite movies." I say and she furrows her eyebrows. "We're in High School Musical."

"You're joking." She says and grabs my arm, attempting to drag me away. "Stop fucking with me and let's just find the girls."

I pull my arm back. "No, I'll prove it to you." I say and look around. I see Troy barely walk inside and I pull Camila alongside with me to follow him.

"What are you--" She grunts as we push through people but I stop and point to where he was standing nearby the door.

"Look! That's Troy Bolton!" I say and her eyes widen.

"That has to be a coincidence." She tries to say and I scan my eyes, looking for Gabriella. "Come on Y/n, let's just go."

I see Gabriella sitting on the couches and force Camila to see. "And Gabriella's right there, reading her book. Just like in the movie!"

"Okay okay. You proved your point, let's go." She said but I shake my head.

"No way! I want to watch Troy and Gabriella sing their first duet together." I say and she rolls her eyes. "This is when the two leads have love at first sight."

"Fine. You have fun with your fantasy. I'm going to try to figure out a way back." She says before leaving me alone.

People started to stand in front of me, making it harder to see the stage. I push my way through the crowd and luckily manage to end up close to the stage.

Camila's POV:

As soon as I grab the hot chocolate from the side, I accidentally bump into someone, spilling the drink all over their shirt.

My eyes widen and I quickly grab the napkins from the table. "I'm so so sorry, I didn't see you when I turned." I say and face the person I bumped into, almost dropping my jaw.

It was Troy fucking Bolton. Well, Zac Efron, but you know what I mean.

"It's my fault, I should've seen where I was going." He says, never breaking his smile.

"Okay...well bye." I awkwardly hand him the napkins but still grab another cup.

Once I finish serving myself again, I take a sip and feel the warm beverage go down my throat, making me smile. Just what I needed.

I take another sip but then almost choke, seeing who was on stage.

Y/n, what did you do?

Y/n's POV:

The pair finishes singing their song and I grin, knowing that Troy and Gabriella were going to sing next. The guy that handled the karaoke machine fixes the microphones on its stands but then plucks one of them off.

"Who's going to rock the house next?" He asks, looking around the room, debating on who to choose.

The spotlight flashes on Gabriella and she looks up from her book with a terrified expression.

"Ohhh!" The crowd cheers in unison and I feel a blinding light flash in my eyes. A couple of hands urge me forward and I turn, seeing them push me on stage.

Uh oh.

"Wait no. I don't sing, choose someone else." I say but the guys around me still push me to go on stage. "Seriously! It can't be me! I can't sing!"

Gabriella gets pushed as well with the guy and he places the microphone on its stand in front of me.

"You know what someday, someday you guys--" He tries to say.

I cut him off. "Might thank you for this, yes I know." I say and he furrows his eyebrows.

"Yeah..or not." He trails in confusion before walking off stage.

I look at Gabriella and she shifted uncomfortably with her arms crossed, looking around the people watching.

The familiar piano intro I basically memorized, started to play throughout the room and I felt my palms begin to sweat. God I can't even si--

"Living in my own world," I sang out of nowhere as if it had a mind of its own. "didn't understand. That anything can happen, when you take a chance."

I can't do this, Troy was supposed to come up here.

I was about to walk off stage until,

"I never believed in," Gabriella sang, making me stop in place. "what I couldn't see. I never opened my heart,"

"Oh," I join again and she gives a shy smile.

"to all the possibilities, ooh." She sings and I slowly start to feel comfortable.

"I know," Gabriella and I sang in unison.

"that something has changed." She sings and in the corner of my eye, I catch her staring at me.

"Never felt this way," I join in again and turn to her but she looks away.

"and right here tonight." She sings, still looking around nervously.

I have to get her comfortable to keep singing or else it'll mess up everything for the rest of the movie.

"This could be the start of something new." We sing together again but I look around to see if Camila was around.

"It feels so right," Gabriella looks up at me.

I face her again. "to be here with you, oh." I join in again and she gives a shy smile. "And now looking in your eyes,"

"I feel in my heart," She sings out as I repeat the last part. "the start of something new."

"Oh, yeah." I hum and pull my arms out of my jacket. "Now who'd have ever thought that."

This causes the crowd to whistle as I toss my jacket on the ground, causing Gabriella to giggle.

"We'd both be here tonight." We sing together and I take my mic off the stand. "Ooh, yeah." She unwraps her hands and places them both on the mic and she looks at me.

"And the world looks so much brighter," She sings, showing that she was starting to get comfortable.

"Brighter, brighter." I attempt to harmonize, making her laugh again.

"With you by my side." She belts out more confidently than before.

"By my side." I repeat, looking around the crowd and seeing them clap along.

"I know that something has changed, never felt this way." We sing together and I sway slightly as she nods her head along to the beat.

"I know it for real," She grins, clutching on the mic stand with one hand.

"This could be the start of something new, it feels so right to be here with you. Oh!" We sing out together again and I gesture for her to dance. "And now looking in your eyes, I feel in my heart, the start of something new."

I place my mic back on the stand, leaning down a bit to show off. "I never knew that it could happen till it happened to me, ohhh yeah." I sing, still facing her and she laughed at me showing off.

She pulls her mic off the stand. "I didn't know it before, but now it's easy to see." She dances as she sings and I nod with a smile.

"Ohhh!" Both of us belt out the high note and honestly, I was surprised I hit it perfectly. Perks of the movie, I guess.

I take my mic off the stand again and fully face her. "It's the start of something new, it feels so right to be here with you. Oh!"

I take a couple steps to her and hold her mic stand that was still in front of her. "And now looking in your eyes I feel in my heart," She takes a step back but almost falls back until someone catches her, pushing her back onstage. I hold on to her hip to steady her and she suppresses a laugh. "that it's the start of something new."

She clutches on her mic with both of her hands, stepping closer to me. "It feels so right to be here with you, oh!" I lift my hand up, almost as if I'm about to cup her cheek. "And now looking in your eyes,"

"I feel in my heart," Gabriella belts out the high note again, placing her hand on her chest over her heart.

"Feel in my heart." I sing at the same time, closing my eyes for a brief second.

"The start of something new," She lowers her voice.

"The start of something new," I sing after, taking another step closer to her.

"The start of something new." We sing in unison once more then the crowd cheers louder as we finish.

I offer my hand to Gabriella. "Y/n." I shout over the cheers.

"Gabriella." She grins, shaking my hand as well.

We place the mics back on its stands and I gesture for her to meet me outside. I grab my jacket from the floor and slide it back on before grabbing us two mugs since it was cold.

I push the door open with my back and see her looking at the view in front of her.

"You have an amazing voice." I say, causing her to turn. I hand her the mug and she smiles gratefully.

"Thanks." She takes a sip.

"You're a singer, right?" I ask, already knowing her answer.

"Just church choir, that's all." She says, turning to fully face me. "I tried a solo and nearly fainted."

I snicker. "How?"

"I took one look at all the people staring at me and next thing I knew, I'm staring at the ceiling. End of solo career." She laughs.

"Well after tonight, I find that hard to believe." I say and she takes a glance inside.

"That was my first time I've done something like that. I mean, it was so cool."

"It was mine too." I say, leaning against the railing.

"It sounded like you've done a lot of singing too." She says and I snort.

"The only singing experience I had was in the rock band  game and pretending I actually had an audience,  so I'm pretty sure that doesn't count."

She laughs once more and I swear I almost passed out because it was cute.

"Ten! Nine! Eight!" The people inside started to count and she shyly looked at the ground. "Seven! Six! Five!"

Am I really about to kiss Gabriella? Now I really must be dreaming.

She looks up to me once more and I see the snow fall on her hair, trailing my eyes to see the blush rise on her cheeks.

"Four! Three! Two! One!"

The fireworks immediately burst in the sky as the people inside celebrated and cheered as loud as they could. I face the view in front of me, seeing the various colors that were fired into the sky.

In the corner of my eye, I see Gabriella turn to me once more and I turn a bit, not even sure if I should kiss her. I mean, what else could go wrong?

I lean close and see she doesn't budge in her spot, her eyes looking between my eyes and my lips, making my heart start to race. Is that the okay sign? Oh fuck it.

I close the distance between us and feel her soft lips press against mine. She places her cup on the table, wrapping both arms around my neck and pulling me closer.

Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit.

I place my cup on the table as well, putting my hands on her hips.

We both hear the doors slam open which causes us to pull away, acting as if nothing just happened. I clear my throat and she shyly pushes the strands of hair behind her ear.

"I-I guess I better go find my mom and wish her a happy new year." She stutters.

"Yeah I gotta gay." I say but then cough. "Go, I mean. I gotta go tell my friend happy new year." I ramble, still in shock of what just happened. "But I'll call you! We can te--I mean, I'll call you tomorrow." I say and she nods with a smile.

I pull out my phone and she furrows her eyebrows, seeing I had the iPhone and she had a flip phone.

Oh shit. I forgot they didn't have iPhones yet.

I quickly create her contact but go to the pictures option. "Smile!" She smiles for the picture as I click the button then hand it to her.

"You too." She says, handing me her flip phone. Thankfully she already had it on the camera so I did the peace sign with my face close to the camera. I slowly typed in my number since the buttons were close to each other. Stupid flip phone.

I feel someone smack my arm and I turn, seeing Camila with a worried expression. "I've been looking for you everywhere!"

I hand the phone back to Gabriella and she hands me mind as well. "I'll talk to you later." She waves before pushing her way through the crowd to go inside.

"Did you just give Gabriella your number?" Camila angrily asks, smacking my arm repetitively.

I glare. "Stop hitting me! It's no big deal. What are you, jealous?"

"No, I'm just pissed at the fact we're in a whole different world and you're not even worried! We're supposed to be finding a way out of here but you're singing away with someone that isn't even real!" She raises her voice, causing people to stare but I shush her. "And it's too fucking cold for this outfit!" She gestures to her dress.

"Keep your voice down." I say and she groans. "Okay, the next scene is the school. So tomorrow we can just--"

"No, we're going to go to our room and try to figure it out now." She says, grabbing my arm to lead us back inside.

As soon as she pulled open the double doors, we were no longer met with the lodge but instead, a school hallway.

"What the hell just happened?" She asks as several students push past her, rushing to their first class.

"Don't you remember? After the new years party, school started again." I say, suddenly feeling the weight in my back. I turn and see I had my backpack on. "The movie is continuing how it should be."

"Not really! You went on stage instead of Troy." She says but then her eyes widen. "I think it was my fault."

"What do you mean?" I say as we continued to walk down the hallway.

"When I ditched you, I went to get something to drink and as soon as I turned, I bumped and spilled my drink all over Troy." She says.

"That's when the guy chose me instead." I realize and Camila pinches the bridge of her nose.

"Okay maybe it's not so bad. We can still fix this, we just have to get Gabriella and Troy to talk. We didn't totally mess up the movie." She says and I scratch the back of my neck nervously. "Y/n...what else did you do?" She glares.

"I may have kissed Gabriella." I say and her eyes widen.

"What? Why?!" She asks, smacking my arms repetitively.

"Can you blame me? I saw the opportunity and I had to take it." I say, trying to block her hits. "It can't be bad that I kissed her...right?"

"Well let's hope she didn't fall in love with you." Camila says. "We have to get to class if we want to blend in."

"If it's following along the movie, we have Ms. Darbus." I say and grab her arm this time to drag her along. "It should be this way."

"If they burst out into song, I'm gonna lose my fucking mind." She mutters.

I laugh. "Better get used to it."
