Rachel
Rachel Elizabeth Dare was a pretty girl both inside and out with her curly red hair, green eyes and her lovable personality. Her parents never really saw past her looks. They tried to make her prettier by signing her up for pagents and caking makeup on her face. All of which Rachel hated.
It was right after one of her pagents (which she lost) when she saw a boy across the street drawing with chalk. Rachel looked at him, longing for a friend. Her parents shook their heads and forced her inside. Rachel looked outside the window of her room realizing it was starting to rain.
She saw the boy across the street's face drop, but he did not go back inside. He simply sat there frowning at his drawings that were slowly washing away.
Rachel felt very bad for him so she pushed her window open and ran outside, right over to him. He looked at her white shoes that were covered in mud and her red hair that was straightening out. "Hi, I'm Rachel" she sat across from him, extending her hand. He gave her the slightest smile. "Hello Rachel. I'm Caden" She picked up the few still good pieces of chalk and invited him over to her driveway.
The two of them spent the next three hours talking and drawing. Caden explained that he had an illnesses and was hospitalized a lot. Rachel told him about her stupid pagents. Another hour passed before Caden's parents called him home. "Wait!" Rachel stopped him and hugged him tight. "Thank you Rachel" He whispered before running home.
Rachel and Caden had spent every minute of their free time together. Until Caden's illness had gotten really bad and he was hospitalized for a month. Rachel was not immediate family so she was not allowed to see him. When she finally got to visit she had painted them in the rain, their first encounter. Caden smiled and laughed slightly before stopping out of pain. "You have paint all over you" he noted. Rachel just smiled. "I love you too Caden. Stay strong" she whispered before walking out. "Love you too Rachel"
Caden's funeral was a week later. Rachel told her parents just to drop her off. She didn't want them to see her cry. Rachel had put in her white mud stained shoes, her face splattered with paint. She held a single rose that used to be white but was now painted multicolored.
She placed her hand on his coffin, bit her lip and swore to herself that she would treasure every single friendship she would ever have a she wouldn't lose them like she lost Caden.
