Chapter 13

What started out as a peaceful Saturday morning had become a nightmare by afternoon. The humans were going about their day normally, the children were playing, the dogs were barking and the cats were meowing. But not for long. The unknown killers started by blowing up the playground. Then the fruit stalls. Then the pharmacy down the street. Heaps of dead bodies were on the spot as they continued their lawless rampage. Several buildings of varying heights and designs were reduced to ashes in a matter of seconds.

"Commander, sector D2 is clear."

"Roger. Move to secondary target, Quebec 4"

"Copy."

A sheer amount of horror was taking over them.

"What was that?!" asks a trembling Kayla.

"I don't know." Ray answers as he pulls out his GHolo "Hold on. I'll check."

Ray accesses the video feed of a geostationary satellite and zooms into the area surrounding the shrine and activates thermal vision. There's nothing. Not even an abnormal heat signature that could hint towards the firing of a gun or an explosive compound. The real horror sets in when he checks on the city.

A group of what appears to be Mechwarriors are laying waste to the city. Kayla glances over from his shoulder to see the horrendous sight. They both share a look of fear and desperation.

"This cannot be happening." Ray says "It's unreal."

Time froze still whilst the sounds of explosions echoed around them.

"General, what is happening in my city?!"

"I assure you, a unit has been dispatched from Base November to deal with this threat. They will be arriving on scene soon."

A mysterious force took over Kayla as she started walking towards the Mechwarrior while Ray watched in shock. Both of them went numb. They could only see the darkness and could only hear unintelligible words coming from the void. The fugue state eventually dissipated after some time.

"—ou consent?" the robotic voice imposed a question onto Kayla and before she could comprehend the matter, her hand reached out towards the green button, permitting the machine to do whatever it asked. Kayla was finally starting to gain consciousness. She was in a cockpit of some sort. She wanted to look for Ray, but a needle emerged from behind her and pricked her way into her bloodstream. A blue liquid found it's way into her body through the needle as she resisted relentlessly. Soon, consciousness had left her.

The same events transpired with Ray as he sat in the other Mechwarrior. The two machines parked next to each other, were waiting on the instructions of their pilots.

When they came to, they knew exactly what needed to done. Kayla flipped some switches, same as Ray. They had a look of determination in their eyes like never before. It was like the injection had also injected the "User Manual" of the robot into their minds. The on-board GPS had marked a destination to reach.

The mechwarriors darted out the hidden entrance of the lab and started to fly up to the atmosphere. Their rocket boosters had materialized out of thin air as they gained altitude. The shape, geometry and form of the mechwarriors had shifted mid-flight. Laser guns, RPGs, and swords had appeared on both of them along with a custom paintjob. They were loaded for bear.

"Approaching marker, ETA 30 seconds."

The destination was revealed to be the center of their city. The mysterious enemy mecha were floating swiftly as they decimated the populace below. The army was nowhere to be seen. The bodies of innocent civilians were strewn about like confetti.

"This is not a drill, I repeat this is not a drill. Avoid going outside and find shelter until further notice." was the message being played on loop through every device present in range.

The police were present taking heavy fire and also guiding the public away.

"Sergeant, get your men on the rooftops here, here and here." a high ranking police official said as he pointed out several locations on his map "We will flank the enemy combatants from these positions."

"Sir, how many units are we facing?"

"Seven enemy units were identified."

Kayla and Ray are spotted flying towards the enemies.

"Is that our backup, sir? Looks awful small than what I expected." a police constable says and points his finger towards them.

"I don't know. I hope it is them."

"Why so few?"

"They must be very skilled."

Their opponents are busy in destruction and mayhem, but they still notice Kayla and Ray's presence and divert their attention towards the renegade heroes.

Ray dodges a laser beam and counters it with a missile of his own. He opens fire with his high caliber machineguns on the remaining attackers, forcing them to use cover.

The missile is able to hit with accuracy, the target faces a fiery death.

Kayla unsheathes her sword and throws it. She retrieves it from the falling body and slices the mecha next to her. Ray activates full thrust and punches another mecha through and through.

Only 3 mechwarriors are left. Their numbers had fallen drastically in the last few minutes.

"Commander, there's only three of us left! Please assist."

"Roger, Quebec 4. Await further orders."

Kayla aimed her sniper and shot the pilot through his cockpit, a direct headshot.

Ray was caught under fire of a mecha, he was alive due to the durable armor present on the body of his mechwarrior. Kayla fired a barrage of laser projectiles at the shooter but Ray was caught in the middle, his fuel tank was hit due to crossfire and he began leaking fuel everywhere. Kayla's lasers had immobilized his attacker, Ray fired his last missile at the target whilst descending to the ground.

There was only one enemy combatant left now.

"Commander! Please respond!"

"Quebec 4, abandon your objectives and fall back."

"Roger!"

He activated his boosters and flew away at top speed, Kayla hastily aimed her sniper rifle and counted her breaths. One shot was all it took as the bullet pierced through the back of the heavily armored mecha into the head and exited through the cockpit.

The attackers were all but defeated.

Sensing that their jobs were complete, Kayla and Ray went back to where they came from.

Just then, tanks, gunships and spec ops in mechwarrior armors entered the city. Ray and Kayla turned on stealth mode and escaped. Unable to see the events that just took place, the lieutenant raised the colonel at Base November.

"Sir, the enemy is not here."

"Search the whole area.

"Affirmative."

Upon complete examination it was revealed that the enemies had been defeated before they the army even came.

"Sir, the enemy has been defeated already."

"Nonsense!"

"Our satellites show that they were killed by two unknown mechas. They disappeared a few meters south of here."

"Repeat your last, lieutenant."

"They disappeared a few meters south of here."

"Disappeared?"

"That's what I'm seeing. They vanished into thin air."

They entered the hidden lab and disembarked from their mechwarriors. That was the point when Kayla realized what she just did. She began to vomit and fell flat on her face. Ray was not feeling up to mark either. He plummeted to the ground as well.

"What the hell did we just do?" Kayla is shocked.

"I have no answer." answers Ray

"Ray, why is your arm glowing!?"

"I don't know. Why is your neck glowing!?"
