Meeting her kin

*Soleil*
When they are both gone, Siri goes to one of the small stones in the circle, putting her hands on it. "Stone in circle, shield to vǫlur. I loosen the ring the earth is protecting". She pushes the stone away, making a hole in the circle and coming back to me. "We have to hurry. The others are unprotected while we are gone". She takes out the little jar of ointment. "This is flying ointment. There are a lot of versions out there, but only a true vǫlur can use it". She explain. "To meet with a Jötnar we need to let go of our inhibitions. Even I who have seen most are still bound by what I believe to be reality and superstition in our World. "The ointment is a potent mix of plants that makes you hallucinate, so you might feel a bit.. drunk before we fly. Do you understand so far ?"

I nod, watching curiously as Siri opens the jar.

"We rub ourselves with the ointment and then we are crowing soft galdr. Do not be afraid for what happens. I am with you all the time and you kin will protect you when we arrive".

Siri takes a big glob and show me how to rub it under my feet. Then she takes a new one and rub it in her armpits. I copy her and when we are done, Siri starts crowing in the whispering voice she had used at my birthday. I breathe in deeply and start mumbling the same sounds that I had been yelling out earlier. After a couple of minutes I get a metallic taste in my mouth. My stomach contract and Black spots are dancing for my eyes. To stop myself from throwing up I close my eyes and grind my teeth. When the worst dizziness is gone, I open my eyes, realising I am once again floating.

'Back at it'. Siri float up beside me.

I try to answer, but no sound is coming from my mouth. Siri shakes her head tapping at her temple.

'So I just have to think it and you can hear it ?' I ask in my head.

'Yes I can hear you, just as you can hear me'. She send me a calming smile.

'Can you hear everything I am thinking ?'

'Only what you are thinking of right now. But if you are trying really hard not to think about something you want to keep hidden to me..'. Siri smiles, shaking her head.

'Then I have already thought it. Got it'. I nod.

'Take my hand, and let's see where we are going'. Siri reach for me and I grab her hand. Together we float over the trees.

This time the World isn't grey as when we looked for hamram. Everything is coloured in the dusks soft colors and was bathes in the moon's silver light. I can't believe it, but I can actually feel the wind against my skin and Siri's warm hand in mine, like I am actually flying.

'This don't feel like when we were looking for hamram'. I turn towards Siri.

'It's because we are not in the real world anymore. We are on a higher astral plane in our minds'. Siri's words are like buzzing bees in my head. 'When we seek for hamram we don't venture to deeply. We need to be able to wake up fast and.. Well be clear headed if we need to hunt'.

We fly through the forest, Siri telling me to let my mind lead me. We end up by a waterfall near a mountain, where we land on a ledge. In front of us is a cave.

'What are we doing here'. I ask looking around curiously.

Siri goes to sit down on a stone. 'I have no idea my friend, you were leading the way'.

'But this is still the forest, it's still Scotland right ?'

'This place look like this, because it is what you imagine it to be'. Siri say.

'But I thought we were lead somewhere.. uhm special'. I don't know how to put it.

'Don't worry; you are exactly where you should be'. A strange voice suddenly sounds in my head. A looking at Siri I know she heard to.

I turn around to see a young man step out of the cave. When he reach us he holds out his arms to me. 'Finally you see me kin. I greet you'

Not being able to think at all I take his hands, staring into his brilliant blue eyes. A chill runs down my back and a profound calm spread over me when our skin meet. I have never experienced this kind of love, security and recognition before. It is like we meet again after many years, just like Gudrun said.

'I greet you kin'. My lips are quivering.

'Okay, now when we got all the formal shit done, you have to name me, so you can call for me in the future'. His face split in a huge grin.

I turn to look at Siri, not knowing what to say, she looks almost as surprised as me.

'What ?' He makes a questioning shrug.

'It's just..'. I don't really know how to put it.

With a cheeky grin, he lets go of my hands and sit down next to Siri. 'Do you want me to be a stiff stick and talk all foggy like their kin ?' He nod towards Siri. 'I Can do that, but I just thought you would prefer me to speak like you are used to'. He looks at me like he is waiting for an answer, but I still just stand there gaping. 'My name ?' He winks teasingly. 'You can always call me Zephyrus if it is'.

I look down, knowing that I am blushing. Then I look up again feeling stubborn. 'What about Fido ?'

'Oh that was just plain mean'. His laughter run through my head. 'But seriously, it is all up to you. Just not Fido.. or Waldo. Something cool okay ?'

'Oh I have never. Think that I should actually meet a real Jötnar up close and then he talks like a damn teenager'. Siri was looking at him with confusion.

'My essence is ancient, vǫlva Siri, don't be mistaken. The shape I come to you in is all on the pipsqueak there. You know like Dan Aykroyd choose the form of Gozer the destructor'.

'So I have chosen for you to kind of look like a greek God with perfect proportions ?' My cheeks turn even more pink.

'Well yeah kind of. Might not have been Your first choice'. He sounded like he was avoiding the question, as he got up and walked to the edge of the cliff.

Confused I stare after him. It couldn't be that this mighty being in front of me is vain about his looks ?

'Well Your idea of a Jötnar was a picture you once saw in a book of Utgard-Loki. I do not want to be compared to an oaf like that. Your second choice was much better. And you need some much better fantasies kin'.

'I am pretty sure I have never imagined or fantasised about that form'. Oh he really is vain.

'Okay ! You got me'. That laughter, sounding oddly familiar sound again. 'If I have to squeeze into a meat suit, it has to be with style. So I dug around a little, took a little here and a bit there, making this look which is very much more me'.

Now when he mention it, I can see what he did, he has Tom's eyes, his hair and his slim muscular build. But he has Zac mouth and smile and his nose. He also has his laugh. And he speaks like a mix of Davina and Zac, with Davina's sense of drama.

'Maybe I should tone it down a bit. More so we can work together, you know without you getting distracted'. He wiggles his eyebrows.

I shake my head. 'Really, you can't think of anything better than marshmallow man from the ghostbuster ?'

'Forget it'. He say.

'Well then I don't really have a choice do I ?' I ask.

'Mehh, you do, my name'. He makes a face.

'Tjalfe'. The name just spill out.

'Tjalfe'. He pout his lips, like he is tasting the word. Then I shrug. 'All Right then. Tjalfe is much better than Fido after all'.

'Are you a God Tjalfe ?' The question has kind of rummage around in my head for a while now.

'A God ? What makes you think that there is more than one ?' He retorts, arching one eyebrow.

'Siri told me about Your kind, that Jötnars are chaos powers. I assumed there is more than one then'. I explain.

'I can't tell you much; only that I am not the only one of my kind'. Tjalfe looked philosophically at the night sky, taking a pause for effect. 'Am I a God ? Are there other Gods ? And is there a main God ? If I should answer that you Will first have to tell me, what is God ?'

'Uhh what ?' I make a rather confused face.

'Precisely it's not easy th answer'. For a moment he looks back to were me and Siri had come from. 'I think this is a chat for a mother time. Those drugs.. Uh plants are wearing of, and I kind of need to explain to you how this is going to work'. He sits back down next to Siri. 'My services has some restrictions. I am bound by the balance that should be on earth. The curse has made the scales tip and apperantly it has tipped too far to one side'.

This is the first time I am seeing totally serious. And I am focusing not to lose my concentration and be pulled back into my body like earlier.

'I have to follow the same rules you have with the vaetter. So I Can only come to you when you call for me. I can't help with things that don't have to do with the balance. So no making me do you laundry or destroy and ex boyfriend. And you can only tap into a limited amount of power. Wouldn't be smart to give you access to control the whole shibam'. Tjalfe's face lights up, like he has a hard time being serious.

'So what is the whole point ?' I am not sure I understand what is expected from me.

'I can help you develop your powers to control the wind. It's a pretty cool feature that will make Your head-to-head combat with the wolf boys more.. even'. Tjalfe glance at Siri. 'It mean you can take a more offensive fighting style against Your enemies'

'That I get'. Siri nod. 'But why now ? And why Soleil ? My spell stopped her mother from getting the calling. Soleil is older than the normal 16 years old, she shouldn't have been called either'.

Tjalfe scrunches up his forehead. 'It's not my job to answer questions from anyone but my kin. You know that'. He hesitate a bit before continuing. 'Because of.. special circumstances.. it has been necessary to lift Your spell on Soleil'.

'Because of the dark one ?' Siri looked carefully at Tjalfe. 'I am assuming that she has gotten you as her kin because of the dark one. It is more powerful than any hamram we have ever encountered, isn't it ?'

'The darkness has always been part of the balance. The position of the moon and the sun in these days have just given it a change to tip the balance to much and I have been headhunted to fix it'. Tjalfe shrugs. 'I can't tell you anything else than what my job is in this. As a Jötnar I serve the balance by keeping Your little planet here under control. Sweep a town away her, blow at a windmill here. Everyday stuff you know, keeping the wheels turning'.

I glance at him, suddenly feeling a bit weird. He is talking about wiping out people like it is some boring 7-16 job, and something in me start to doubt him. But before it can stick he turns towards me and his eyes speaks to me in a way that kicks every doubt to the curb.

'No matter what I will never harm you. You can be sure of that'. He keeps his eyes locked with mine, until I feel without a doubt that I can trust his words. 'You guys are working for the balance, by holding the hamram down and making sure normal people keep believing that monsters only exists in the movies'. He seem to weigh his words before continuing. 'Now a new player has entrerede the game. Someone who can greatly threaten the balance. Because if the dark one goes public, Well then we are done with democracy, if you get what I mean. The problem is under control for now, but it has become my job to be on stand by if the other side tries to take over the world'.

'But why me ? What do you need me for ? Can't you just eliminate the dark one ?'

'That was exactly what I suggested'. He throws out his arms rather dramatically. 'But I just got some bulshit about free will and such. Anyway, I guess you were next in line to get Your calling, so you and me are stuck with each other'.

I look over the mountains. I am quite sure there are more to this than he is telling, but he made it clear to Siri that it is all he is going to say.

'Listen this is new territory for me too'. I jump slightly at the soft tone of his voice, it's so different from the business like way he had just talked. 'I am not crazy about being muzzled either and that free will is seriously a stick up my arse'. He comes to stand in front of me. 'But beside that I am quite fun to hang with'.

It is impossible not to smile, when he stands there sending me that cute boyish grin. And as I look into his eyes, my breath is stolen away. 'What do you say ? Should we jump to it ?'

'Okay'. I answer.

'Cool. Stone in circle, shield to vǫlur. I tighten the ring the earth is protecting. But one thing should remain, we let in Tjalfe anyway'. He nods seeming proud.

I look at him wide eyed.

'I know, I know, it could be the next big hit right ? It is time for you to get back in Your skin. But you can always call for me and I'll be right there, okay ?' He takes my hands. 'I greet you kin'. He voice sounds so serious in my mind and I am just about to answer when he starts giggling. 'Nah that formal shit ain't gonna cut it. Talk to you laters pipsqueak'. He sends me a lopsided grin as he squeezes my hands. Then he nods at Siri and disappear into the grotto.

For a moment we just stand there, staring after him. 'Well fuck me that was not what I expected.. we should get going'.

I gasp at her swearing. But it is hard to pull myself away from the cave. I feel like a part of my soul was just ripped out and had disappeared into the darkness.

'You are going to see him again, probably soon. We need to hurry back'. Siri take my hand.

I let her pull me with her into the air. This time we fly at high speed, and I cling to Siri's hand, scared to fall down.

It feel like a wave crashing into me as I slide back into my body and open my eyes. I feel nauseous and I can feel that my body is still a bit under the influence of the ointment as I get on my feet, wobbling a bit.

"Sorry about the speed me dear. We didn't have much time". She hands me a cup of tea from a thermos. "Here it will help with the horrid taste".

I hadn't tasted it before now, but I grateful take the cup.

This is the moment I wolf's howl rips through the silence.

"Oh no". Siri looked worriedly towards the cabin. "Soleil, you Saw how I opened the circle right ?"

I nod, feeling scared.

"Your kin gave you the spell, so you can close the circle. Do you remember it ?" Siri ask me.

"Yes". I gasp, looking after Siri who are already running towards the cabin.

"I want you to stay here. No matter what, stay here till one of us come for you". She calls back, before disappearing between the trees.
