Chapter 1. The Quake

The story begins...

Duskpaw was an apprentice now, his mentor is Coldstare, Coldstare won't judge how he acts, we'll be friends, right? Well, he knew Coldstare is the deputy, but he really never knew him, or anything about him, that's when he got a little bit nervous about it.

Duskpaw quietly padded out of the den once he saw the moon slowly slide down, he'd been kept awake since moonhigh, night terror, he'd never be accepted if he didn't get those under control soon.

Once outside, Duskpaw crept onto the hidden pile of rocks which as far as he knew, was only known to him, and Dawnpaw of course.

Duskpaw climbed to the top of the pile, then reached for the steady branch that never made a noise, never a creak, nothing, he was completely unnoticed, exactly how he liked it.

He stalked up the tree trunk, clambering as silently as he could up the tender alder bark. Once at the top, he sat down and let himself breathe, gazing up at the cliffs towering over the camp, he noticed his nose was going to be difficult today, great, hunting without smell, great.

Duskpaw sat in the same spot throughout the whole sunrise, it reminded him of Dawnpaw, she was the same pale golden orange color, but her bright blue eyes contrast to her pastelly appearance. The blue was their only reminder they were siblings, besides the fact they are best friends, no one would figure they were even related with their personality differences.

He realized too late that he would give away the sacred place he and his sister established if he came down with even the slightest bit of noise.

He tried to sneak back down, immensely thankful he doesn't look like either his mum nor his dad, being the only grey and black cat in the small line of cats, at least that he knew of.

He watched timidly as the tired dawn patrol trudged out of the Warriors den.

'They surely won't see me if they are this tired!' Duskpaw let himself hope.

He smoothly slithered down the rocks, stepping lightly in fear of reveal.

The ground started to move up and down.

The cliffs began to tremble violently, threatening the collapse of unsteady rocks.

He felt the rocks before he saw them.

Suddenly he was plunged into darkness. The last thing he felt, a large rock descent upon the back of his skull.

/////////

Dawnpaw felt the earth underneath her shake in her dream, she had been chasing a blue mouse (why was it blue?), then she felt as if she was on extra bouncy moss, because she was going up and down and she wasn't stopping.

She heard a shriek and had an overwhelming sense of panic come over her, she realized her brother was not in her slightly fuzzy sight. She scrambled to the entrance of the den, frantically searching for the grey fur and blue eyes she knew best.

When she saw Badgerpaw and Shinepaw claw their way out of the den, she finally felt the earth shaking.

Her thoughts sprinted around in her mind.

She was in danger, she needed to get out, she needed to find her brother, she needed to find her dad, her mom, Snowheart, someone!

/////////

When Duskpaw came to, it was completely dark, he couldn't see his paws in front of himself, he was terrified.

This was not the kind of darkness he was used to, he knew, he engrossed himself within the darkness that always, always lay in the back of his mind, this however, this was new.

As he fell back into the depths of his mind, all he could think about, is how he'd die here, alone, in the dark.

//////////

Dawnpaw's knees almost buckled as she stumbled through the gravely camp, her eyes darting around frantically as she searched for her parents, or at least someone.

Then she saw the golden fur rushing around, with the same energy as herself, but with focused eyes, obviously searching for something, or someone.

She was spotted quickly due to her pale golden pelt, father and daughter rushed toward each other and Dawnpaw felt a choked sob break through her throat.

"We are evacuating into a clearing on the edge of the camp, there will be nothing to fall on us!" Sumstar said loudly, in his camp meeting volume.

Dawnpaw jumped a bit, startled at the sudden booming noise close to her ears.

"Where is your brother??"

The sob escaped her throat once more before her father understood what she was unable to communicate with words, she saw he'd understood by the look of terror washing over his face.

Sunstar all but picked up the apprentice up by her scruff, leading a whole sea of different colored fur as he loped out through the camp entrance.

Dawnpaw watched, horrified as she finally saw the damage the shaking had caused, she stared, frozen in shock, as she was slowly set to the ground.

Everything was broken.

The release on her scruff snapped her out of her reverie.

"Duskpaw!! We have to go get him! He could be trapped! We have to get him!" Dawnpaw sobbed.

"I'm going back!" Her father announced.

There were yowels of protests from the cats all around, looking for guidelines.

"Coldstare is in charge!" Sunstar announced, before running at full speed into the place they called home.

////////

Duskpaw awoke to the sensation of something heavy being rolled all around himself.

Suddenly the weight was lifted off one of his ears, it was making a sound that felt like an echo of disturbing noises.

He chanced a glance above, to see who would be greeting him in StarClan.

Instead he saw the golden fur of his father, and the blue eyes of his mother.

There was a collective gasp between the mates as they saw the blood covering their son.

They shook themselves out of their shocked trance, immediately immersed in pulling, rolling, and pushing rocks off of the apprentice.

Duskpaw started to wheeze as regular oxygen filled his dust filled mouth.

His nose was still being rebellious today, he mused, he was definitely in shock.

Duskpaw started laughing, and coughing, all at once, struggling to take a satisfying breath.

Sunstar picked his way around the bloodied cat, and picked him up, gentle as a mouse.

Snowheart was immediately called over, Duskpaw didn't hear who called her, his ears were ringing and he was still laughing at the nose problem.

And still coughing, and wheezing.

That was when his body decided to power down, to refresh his body, with some well deserved sleep.

The ground was shaking slightly less than before.

His head was going up and down, kind of like vibrating off the ground.

His head hurt.

He was going to sleep.

Darkness was welcome now.

I shall dump the angst onto anyone who dare come near, watch out!

Btw they live on the edge/bottom of a cliff, it's a small earthquake/rockslide, I couldn't tell you which, because I really don't know.

Hope you enjoyed :)
