By midnight the darkness is almost absolute, only a smattering of luminous stars scatter the heavens. Even the moon has waned to almost nothing and you can't even see your own hands in front of your face outside.

"We're gonna be late!" Jin's frustrated yell echoed throughout the entire building, stirring everyone down to the very core. "Can you tell Taehyung to hurry up?" He said to you while rushing down the stairs, his phone being balanced between his shoulder and ear as he slid on a jacket. Just as you turned around to go find out, you were pulled backwards by your sleeve.

"He left without us, dummy," Yoongi rolled his eyes and grabbed your wrist, pulling you back down the stairs.

"What?" Jin whipped around, his eyes wide. "I-, okay fine. Let's get going."

The ride to school is not as silent as it used to be. Everyone's joking amongst themselves and having normal conversation. You don't feel like an awkward outsider.

Once you reached campus the light of the day had long since ebbed and dwindled to nothing, now as midnight marched steadily toward everyone the air was cooler and damper than it had been.

The hallways are crowded as usual, but among them you recognized one of the older boys talking to others from a group Taehyung hung out with frequently. He had a laidback aura surrounding him that made him approachable. You walked over and tapped his shoulder.

"Hey, I'm Y/N," you almost choked on your spit once you saw how attractive he was. "Have you seen Taehyung?"

"Oh, you're Y/N,"  he turned away from his group and half smiled down at you, like he knew a secret.

"I've heard about you," he gestured for you to walk with him as the bell rang for class. "Why are you looking for Taehyung?"

"I just really need to talk to him." The urgency in your voice was sincere.

"Well I guess you can catch him later today after his psych class, we usually hang out behind the social studies building."

"Okay I'll be there, thank you so much!"

"No problem."

Right before you were supposed to talk to Taehyung, a hand clapped over your shoulder. "Y/N, you're looking for Taehyung?"

"Who told—"

"Why?" Though his voice expressed concern, the look on his face was unmoving.

"I feel bad for what happened earlier." And it was true. Maybe Seokjin was a little too hard on him, regardless you didn't wanna have bad blood with Taehyung.

"That was his own fault, you don't owe him anything," his voice was strained and his eyebrows furrowed.

"I don't want to be on bad terms with him the entire year," you insisted. "It's the least I can do."

He scoffed, "You think he'll listen to you? He's not worth it, trust me."

"I have to try," you tightened your grip on your backpack strap and walked away. Determined.

The social studies buildings were large, smoked glass and steel, each one joined to the next by a covered walkway.

"What are you doing here?"

"I just wanted to talk." All the reasons not to do this come flooding in, as if your body chemistry just sent them a blanket invitation. You can feel the soft panic that can grow or fade depending on what you do next. It seeps into your bones, and you realize it can fade if you back away. But you want to face this right now.

His eyes stared at you with an intensity that tightened your chest. "I have nothing to say to you. And I want nothing to do with you either." There was no softness in his gaze, nor his tone. Instead there was a bubbling hatred. Disgust perhaps.

Hate colors the soul. It spreads throughout the entire body. Left unchecked, hate can completely poison the soul.

Taehyung began to walk away, you tried to stop him by grabbing his sleeve but he violently ripped it away.

"You really don't get it do you?" He leaned in dangerously close, chuckling heartlessly as fury blurred his sight. His jaw tightened and a stony glare carved into his dark eyes.

"Let me say this real slow for you so it sinks in. I. Don't. Like. You." It took the ends of your shoes hitting a wall behind you for you to realize you were backing away from him. The fear he created in you sat on you like a pillow over your mouth and nose. Enough air gets by it, allowing your body to keep functioning, but it's crippling all the same. You can walk, try to talk, try to listen to his reason, but your insides are just dying slowly. "In fact, I despise you. If it was up to me, you'd already be dead." He smirked at your fear, "Stay the fuck out of my way, and we'll be good, okay?" He faked a smile, then shoved his way past you with his shoulder. "Don't ever talk to me again."

The tears burst forth like water from a dam, spilling down your face. The muscles of your chin tremble like a small child. There is static in your head once more, the side effect of this constant fear, constant stress you just endured. You hear your own sounds, like a distressed child, raw from the inside.

"Hey, hey! What happened?" All of a sudden you're taken into a pair of arms and you can hear the heartbeat of someone who cares. A hand holds your head close to his chest and the overwhelming comfort breaks you down more.

"I don't get why he fucking hates me! I didn't do anything to him!" It takes something out of you that you didn't know you had left to give. That's the way it is when people are hard. It's like a theft of the spirit, an injury no other person can see.

"He's like that okay, he's just a strange kid. One day we're best friends and then the next we're enemies. Don't take it personal." He wrapped an arm around your shoulders and pulled you close, gently rubbing your arm. Despite the heaviness in your stomach, it fluttered at the feeling of his body pressed against yours. You sunk into the warmth of his side, appreciative of the simple gesture. His touch made the world melt away, and you welcomed it.

"How can I not?" you whispered. You looked up and met the familiar crescent eyes twinkling with mischief, a perfect smile on his face.

"You need a perfect distraction."
