Calypso walked across her pristine beach, the cool water licking her ankles. The air on land smelled sweet, the water smelled salty, but the the shoreline, where Calypso was walking, seemed like a whole other smell. It calmed her.
It had been three months since Leo had left her island. Everyday she thought about him, but she would always push the thoughts away, distract herself. She didn't want to think about another loss.
Before her, a figure formed out of the sand.
"Oh no," Calypso muttered. Before her was Earth Mother Gaea herself.
"What are you doing here?" Calypso demanded. Gaea smiled sleepily.
Gaea spread out her hands, like she was expecting a hug. "Poor Calypso. Waiting for a hero who will never come back."
Calypso shook her head. "What do you mean?"
"You hero Leo Valdez will never come back for you."
Calypso took a shaky breath. She already knew that. She didn't need to be reminded.
"Leave," Calypso demanded, Gaea just smiled more evily.
"I will be waking soon. The blood of two demigods will be spilled before, allowing me to rise. You faithful hero of yours will be dead."
"No," Gaea's words ringed inside Calypso's head. She turned to face the Earth Goddess. "Why are you here? To remind me of my horrible fate?"
"Not exactly." Gaea studied the gleaming pebbles and pearls that layered Calypso's beach. Then Gaea gazed to the wide open ocean.
Before Calypso could question her, Gaea spoke. "I have brought some... interesting news." Gaea mused.
Calypso didn't like the way Gaea said that. Calypso's hands balled into fists. "What is it?"
Gaea sighed with no sympathy. "I told you Leo Valdez would not come back," She reminded her.
"The reason for that is his death."
Calypso took a moment to let it process. No. No, it wasn't true. Not possible. No, this was a trick, a little game Gaea was playing to confuse her. But something told her she was telling the truth.
Calypso's legs buckled, and she fell to her knees. Leo was.... dead? He was never coming back?
Calypso wanted to scream. No! She was in love with Leo! Leo helped her! Leo had seemed to be the only bright spot in her curse, and now he was gone. She would never see him again, even if she died. The Underworld was cruel.
Calypso couldn't help it, but she started crying. Her tears washed into the ocean.
Gaea was still smiling in front of her.
"Leave!" Calypso screamed. "Leave, and never come back!"
Gaea dissapeared looking pleasently amused.
Calypso felt so broken she couldn't speak.
He was really dead? Why? How? What happened? And why did Gaea find it important to tell her that? Was a it a warning?
Gaea had told her of how soon she would be rising. Calypso realised she wasn't just saying that. Gaea was telling her that Leo's blood had been spilled upon the earth. And if it hadn't been done already, all Gaea would need was a girl's blood to rise.
Calypso hated to believe it, but something told her she was right.
Then Calypso had a crazy idea. If Gaea's gaining power, then the magical force that was keeping her on this island.... the magical force protected by the gods.
Calypso looked to the campout Leo had made in his time on Ogygia, something Calypso hadn't had the heart to tear down.
She found the small part of a boat she had helped him build.
And for the first time in forever, she set sail, away from her prison.
~~~
Leo figered even when he was dead, he had the most worst luck. He couldn't believe he'd come to the Underworld unprepared. Leo sighed sadly and stood nervously with the other ghosts, who were keeping their distance from each other. Even in such small time, Leo got bored easily. He started fiddling with some leftover string and wire. He managed to make an airplane before another soul came through the door.
Leo didn't bother to look up.
He heard the voice of the man speaking. "Lets see. Cause of death?"
"Uh..." It sounded female. It also sounded nervous. "I'm here to see Hades. I traveled here to... make an appointment."
Leo figered she hadn't planned her trip so well. The man at the desk sighed. "What is your name?"
The girl hesitated. Then she said smally, "Calypso"
Leo jolted up so fast he knocked over some ghosts. "Say what?"
Neither the girl nor the man took any notice to him. But then her saw her - yes, his Calypso Calypso of Ogygia. Leo gaped at her. Why was she here?
Calypso seemed to answer the question. "I came here by boat. I have come in search of a lost one."
The man answered immediatly. "Sorry, Missy. You only get in if your dead."
"Please-"
"Nope. Sorry."
Leo's eyebrows knit. Who did she want to visit?
Calypso pleaded. "Please! Just let me talk to him."
"Whats his name?" The man grumbled.
"Le-leo Valdez." She said it like she was afraid she's just set off a bomb.
Leo gaped at her. She knew he was dead. He wan't to talk to her, but she made no notice of him or the ghosts around him.
The man shook his head. "Not like he made it to the underworld. Didn't have a coin with him. Couldn't pay."
"What?" Calypso then turned to the waiting room full of ghosts, like she was noticing them for the first time. And yet, she still looked straight through Leo.
"Where is he?" She demanded. The man sighed. "He just came by minutes ago. He'll be in that waiting room, though I suspect it'll be hard to find him."
"I can talk to him?"
"He's not technically in the Underworld, so yeah. Bt it will be difficult."
Calypso eyed every ghost, but seemed to be having trouble, like they were hard to look t in many ways. Then she stopped at Leo.
Leo stepped up to her, but a swarm of ghostly hands pulled him back. Calypso came to him instead.
They were face-to-face. "Leo?" She stammered. Leo tried to touch her face, but found his hand wasn't solid anymore.
No sound came when he spoke. So they just stared into each others eyes. Calypso cried more the longer they looked at each other, but she was a silent cryer.
"You promised you'd come back," She whispered. Leo felt so guilty he wanted to sink.
"I'm sorry," He said. He didn't know if she had heard him, for she made no more eye contact after that.
She took many shaky breaths.
"Calypso," Leo leaned closer to her ear so that nobody else could hear. "I love you,"
Calypso squeesed her eyes shut, probably meaning she had heard him.
Leo almost though he could see her mouth "Me too," before turning back to the man. Her eyes were blood red from crying so horribly.
She interupted the man's conversation with a tall ghost man. "I will pay for Leo to cross the river. Let him go to the Underworld."
Leo tried to scream at her, 'NO!". He didn't want to lose her forever! Even worse - she was immortal! He would never see her again! She would never die!
The man shook his head. "Missy-" The he gawked at the golden dracma. "I'll do it."
Calypso pulled the coin away. "Only if you promise to transport him to the underworld saftly and properly. Swear it on the River Styx."
"Yes, yes, I swear! Now lets get on with it - shoo!" He waved his hand at Calypso like she was a pesky fly.
Leo and Calypso looked at each other one last time. He mouthed "Thank You". She smiled through her tears. Then she left.
"C'mon, buddy." The man walked over to Leo. "You're coming with me."
Sorry that story took so long! Not really sure what I was thinking.....
But I think I like it. Suspenceful, sad, heartbreaking. Leo and Calypso shall never be together. Pfft, yeah right.
Thank you for reading!! Read my other stories!!
