Chapter 20 - Treat
Vani and I walked around the shopping center, searching for the pet store.
"Haven't you been here before?" I asked her and she nodded, "I have. And sometimes the store gets too many animals that they can handle. So, I like to come by, adopt them, and give them homes. It is fun and very uplifting!" I felt around in my bag, making sure I had everything with me.
"Relax, it is going to be a relaxing day. I thought you with me so you can be surrounded by loving animals! Oh, and the food here is bomb." Vani told me as she smelled the air of fast food from the food court.
"Oh, I love shopping centers for the middle class. They got everything condensed together in one place for convenience sake! While we have to have a flipping jet or plane hoist our goods from different countries!" Vani complained in annoyance.
"Mom has told me you can get food poisoning from eating from places like this." I stated quietly as people walked by us. We almost stood out like a sore thumb because of our designer clothing, but the more and more I looked around, everyone seemed pretty normal to us. We just looked like everybody else. Maybe I'm just nervous...
"Then they have the audacity to apologize for not getting the correct pet food for my animals' diets! Rude!" She shouted.
"Shh, you are causing a scene Vani." I told her and she huffed, glaring down at the floor as she crossed her arms.
"Still... It is quite annoying. But here, I can get what I need within a flash! It's very convenient. Oh, and Mythica's brand of makeup is sold here too." She added. I bit my bottom lip, looking around in search of a makeup store.
"Does this place have everything?"
"Not dungeons sadly. I promise you, I have checked. Come on!"
"Wait what-" She grabbed hold of my arm and pulled me along as she ran up an escalator. I almost tripped over my feet as I scrambled up it, feeling her almost rip my arm out of it's socket.
I nervously looked around the second floor, seeing where the exits were, like a stairway or elevator. Just in case I wanted to get out of here quick, was that normal for a person to do?
"You hungry? Because we can get something to eat before shopping." Vani asked me. I thought for a moment, suddenly realizing I skipped out on breakfast today because I slept in.
"Hemalyn?" I snapped out of my thoughts and looked over at Vani, "S-Sorry. I spaced out."
"You didn't eat yet, did you?" Vani read my mind and I gulped, nodding slowly. She sighed heavily, looking around.
"Well there is a stand over there that has ice cream and popsicles. I can ask the man if he has anything else that is lactose free besides popsicles." She told me. I stared at her in slight shock, she remembered that I was lactose intolerant? We walked over to the stand, the man smiling at us kindly.
"How are you two today?"
"We are doing good. Um, do you have anything for my friend here? She is lactose intolerant so I was wondering if you got anything besides popsicles..." Vani trailed off. The man nodded, grabbing a piece of paper from the table behind him and placing it down in front of us.
"Here is the menu for today, the things that are crossed out if what I'm out of until I get more supplies." He informed us. I looked down at the paper, seeing the names, prices, ingredients, and even calories surprisingly. His menu was very detailed for just a stand in the shopping center.
"What are you getting, Hemalyn? I'm getting Mint Chocolate Ice Cream." I shrugged, still reading but stopped, shaking my head.
"Blue Raspberry Smoothie?" I stated and the man nodded.
"Do you want whipped cream on top? It is home made, and I don't use any dairy products because I have a son who is like you, can't eat dairy products." The man stated.
"Yeah sure." I told him, "That is so cool! No wonder you are so detailed in the menu! Most fancy places don't even have what is in the food they are consuming. And as a person who is allergic to basically everything. It is very reassuring." Vani stated with a grin in relief and reassurance. I thought back on all the restaurants I have been at (Which were a few, since we have our own personal chefs) and Can was right, it was rare to find a menu that had a list of ingredients when it came down to allergies.
"Thank you for the compliment. Oh that will be 700 yen." I sighed through my purse and pulled out the exact amount before Vani could pay for herself.
"I can pay for myself, Hemalyn." Vani told me.
"I know, it is just easier to pay our treats in one sweep. Besides, you don't have to pay me back." I told her and she gave me a pout. After a few minutes, the vendor handed over our treats.
"Enjoy!" We bowed at him in thanks before leaving. I stirred my smoothie with the straw, sighing deeply.
"Oh! You should consider about getting a pet, maybe one that can help you, like give you comfort when no one else is able to?" Vani suggested and I shrugged.
"Mom hates dogs and Mother is allergic to cat hair so, probably not."
"We can find something, don't worry!" Vani took a bite out of her ice cream, immediately regretting it as she felt the cold slam against her teeth.
"COLD!".
