Chapter 17 - Assurance
"Mommy?" I pulled on her blazer, staring up at her then at the elementary school standing before us. I could feel fear grasp hold of my hand I couldn't do this, I was too afraid.
"Don't worry, you will make tons of friends and be awesome at this school thing." She reassured me with an uneasy smile. She knew this was a big deal for me since I have never really been around other kids besides cousins, whom I never really played with unless I was dragged along at family get togethers. Mom crouched down, pushing loose red hair out of my face. My hair was pulled up in a high ponytail, it always was back then, because everyone loved to see my cute features back then.
"Remember Hemalyn, your Momma and I love you so very much, and it is hard for us to, to send you to school but, every child needs to learn about the world around them. Sadly we can't always hold your hand and guide you. You will have to learn to form your own opinions on things, okay?" I nodded slowly, telling myself not to break down in tears in front of so many people.
"Okay..." She leaned forward and kissed my forehead, holding my head in her hands.
"I will pick you up at 3, not a minute later. Okay?" I nodded. I watched her walk back to the limo, closing the door behind her before rolling down the window waved at me. I waved back at her, feeling my throat close up. I watched the limo drive away and heard the bell ring behind me, but I made no move to go into kindergarten. Despite Mom reassuring me that everything was going to be fine, I couldn't give that extra push to go inside.
After a few minutes, I heard footsteps run from behind me before I felt someone tap on my shoulder. I curiously turned around to see a little boy with his hand outstretched.
"Come on!" He told me with a grin. I furrowed my brows. I glanced over my shoulder where I saw the limo last before hesitantly reached out and grabbing hold of his hand, letting him lead me into my first day of kindergarten.
-
It was the end of the first day, and I wanted nothing more than to go home and be with my parents.
I waited at the front of the school, watching other kids getting picked up. Our teacher, Miss Orihara, was a little ways away from me, making sure we all went home safely with our parental guardians. I remember this day so vividly, it has been ingrained into my mind because of what happened.
The little boy who I made friends with waved goodbye to me as his butler escorted him over to their limo. The little boy's name was something I couldn't remember, because I used to not be able to pronounce it correctly, so I just called him, 'Munch'. Not very flattering, but he liked it oddly enough. The reason I called him that if because he brought his own lunch which mostly consisted of different types of chips, and everytime someone were to speak at our table, he would munch loudly on a single piece of chip.
Soon enough, I was the last one still waiting for my ride home. I messed with my school skirt, the cotton material smooth and warming, to keep me occupied while I waited. Miss Orihara was growing worrisome, glancing down at her watch a few times.
"When did your Mommy say she was coming?" She asked me. I looked up at her with tearing eyes.
"At 3..." I spoke softly, knowing she was late, perhaps more than late.
It was 3:36 P.M.
Miss Orihara sighed, holding her hand out to me.
"Let's go back inside and I will call her, okay? See if she is still able to pick you up, if not, I will take you home myself." I nodded solemnly, letting her take me inside so she could call and keep an eye on me.
--Present--
"Thank goodness you are alright! Missy, you worried us to death!" Mother told me, tears streaming down her face with a some mascara. She carefully wiped away her tears before bringing me into another hug.
"Thank you for looking after her, but you should have brought her back home right away-" She began to scold Vani who put her hands up in defense, "Look, no offense Ms. Alderain, but I didn't know what was going on until today. So I was just doing what a good friend would do." Vani defended herself. Mother huffed, wanting to scold her more but, she knew she was right. Mother rubbed my arms up and down, sniffling as she stared at my face.
"All that matters is that you are home. I will call her to let her know that you are back safely with us-"
"No. I need to tell you something." I caught her off. She furrowed her brows, pushing hair out of my face.
"What is it?" I took a deep breath, holding onto the bottom of my shirt.
"That...".
