Chapter Fourteen

Albion's POV

I was swimming with sirens on a search for their parents and now we've come across an ominous magic floating door. That would be a very good sentence to say if I wanted to be exiled from my village for being insane. If I had told that to any child int he village they'd probably look at me with shock and disgust for even considering such fantastical ideas. Even if my mother was lenient with me growing up with fairytales and myths, she always advised me never to speak about them, because the village didn't like anything of the sort.

"I wouldn't think that it would be kind," I said under my breath as the three of us slowly made our way to the door.

It looked brand new, despite being deep in the salty ocean. It was black and smooth-looking. There was a silver handle with an intricate design of an octopus on the left side of the door. I felt like it was watching me, getting ready to capture my hand with its arms and drag me through the door, whether it was open or closed. The door was about twelve foot tall, so it towered over us.

"It's weird," Ler stated bluntly as he looked up at the door. "It's not in front of a house, or room, or cave." He glanced at me. "Do humans have doors which don't go to caves, or rooms, or houses?"

I shook my head slowly. "Only when they haven't been attached to the rooms yet." I felt very awkward interacting with Ler, and I wasn't sure why. "But I think that this door is very different."

"It's the door to our downfall," Hudson stated before reaching out and opening the door by the octopus handle. The arms of the octopus moved slightly, unlatching from the seemingly invisible and magical wall. He gave the door a slight knock for politeness before shifting to the side. "Humans first."

"What?" I asked quickly before sighing and shaking my head. At least if something bad happened, he'd be able to yank me back. There was enough room for the both of us though. I tried to feel to see if there was a wall, but my hand just moved through the water as though there was nothing there. "Why should we go through this door?" I hoped that this was perhaps the door to an alternative dimension, one where there's a kind person who would give us all the answers we were looking for, who had a very long tea party with Hudson and Ler's family.

"Because there are no other doors, and I knocked." Hudson's fingers tapped anxiously against the back of my hand, and I knew I didn't have any choice in the matter.

I nodded and began to push myself forward, feeling a bit more confident in my swimming ability since jumping off the side of the boat and having the company of two sirens, but my movements were still rather clumsy.

I hesitantly moved a foot through the doorway before pushing myself forward with my arms, trying to find something which was different on this side of the door. It wasn't until my head was through did, I begin to hear the voices. There were sweet lulling voices driving me forward. The melodies were captivating and moving, I found myself swimming with a desperate need to get closer, like the surface was just feet away and I was so close to getting a normal breath of fresh air which would fill my lungs and take away the foreboding sadness and dread which this journey had filled me with.

Then Ler's hands moved over my ears, and I snapped out of it.

I turned my head to look at him and Hudson with a confused frown. "What?" I asked with a raised voice, unsure of how loud I was being. As I came back to the present I felt a jolt of panic, since Ler's hands were inside my air bubble, and we had moved several meters away from the door. "Those voices..." I waited for an explanation.

Hudson had paled and nodded before gesturing to himself and Ler. "Sirens." I could only assume that's what he had said. "That's a good sign."

I wanted to tell him that I wasn't so sure about that, but it could be their family, so I kept my mouth shut and looked around. The ocean looked just as it had earlier, dark but yet somehow, I could still see. "Then should we follow them?"

Hudson nodded and gestured for Ler to take his hands from my ears.

"Wait," I said quickly. "I don't want to be made to do something dangerous, why do I have to hear them?"

"Because we can't hear it," Hudson informed. "At least not like humans can. To us, a siren's singing just sounds like beautiful music. To a human, and many other creatures, it lures them in with a force they can barely resist. They're pulled forward, going blindly towards the sirens so that they can be lured to their death for food."

That sounded awful and terrifying, prompting me to reconsider my company once more. But now I figured that I really couldn't get out of this in any way.

"So, you want me to be led by the singing?"

Hudson nodded. "We'll keep a tight hold on you to make sure you don't' do anything stupid."

"What, like jumping off the side of the boat?" I said under my breath before glancing around at the dark water. I wasn't sure if he said anything, since Ler's hands were over my ears, but if he did, he probably didn't want me to hear. "Okay, I'm going to die anyway, might as well help where I can."

"That's the spirit," Ler said as he removed his hands from my ears. One of his hands rested on my shoulder whilst the other was on Hudson's, causing him to swim between us.

The voices filled my mind again, almost making my mind go blank as I felt a pool of warmth and desire within my stomach. There was a need to go forward and discover the source of the heavenly music. There were several voices, and a lot of them sounded like musical instruments, but they were distinctly all voices.

My vision became tunnelled as I moved forward, barely noticing Ler's and Hudson's hands keeping hold of me. The feeling of doom and despair was slowly being replaced by warm and fuzzy feelings, like my mother's embrace and my father's words. It felt like I was back home again.

That was util Ler's screaming interrupted the music.

I came back once more to feel his sharp claws digging into my shoulder. Hudson was pulling at me with all his might, but he was also facing his own struggles as something was wrapped around his tail.

"What's going on?" I yelled, trying my hardest to scream over the sirens. "What's got you?"

Ler was still screaming and thrashing, his claws very painful in my shoulder.

I looked down at my legs and noticed there wasn't anything there, so whatever it was must've been going after the strongest of us. I didn't know what to do, since my bag was on my back, and I couldn't get anything out of it.

"Three little creatures entering my home," a very creepy voice sang out. "One had legs, the others had none. They swim swim swim through the sea sea sea. Now they're going to be my tea."
