~Part 28~
Sorry I'm stretching out those two cliffhangers, but I need a Prinxiety chapter here sooooo~
Virgil took a deep breath in chemistry, putting his head down to try to block out some of his surroundings. He wasn't having an attack, but his anxiety felt a little on edge at the time.
"Not that I'm in any type of position to advise you on what to do, but I'm fairly certain putting your head down on the lab table during an experiment is a safety hazard." Logan's voice sounded from across the way.
"Sorry..." Virgil said to his lab partner. "It is just water with food coloring and salt though."
"Correct. I'm surprised, I didn't think you were listening at all." Logan stated he then finished mixing all the beakers and looked to his friend. "What is wrong?"
"Oh you know, same old same old. My nerves are just a little on edge." Virgil replied trying to focus only on the other's voice and drown out any other noises around him.
"What has you so upset?" Logan asked calmly.
"We don't have play rehearsal tonight." Vigil responded.
"Wait... did I hear that correctly? You are experiencing anxiety because you don't have play rehearsal tonight?" Logan appeared confused.
"Yes." Virgil sighed in annoyance. "It's because I promised that stupid prince I'd have him over for dinner when we had a break from rehearsal."
Logan raised a brow at him suspiciously. "Why would you make such a promise?"
"Because my mother made me." He replied quickly explaining himself so his friend wouldn't get the wrong idea. "She wanted to meet him..."
Logan nodded. "I see. Then why do you feel so nervous about it?"
"You know I don't really like inviting many people into my home..." Virgil replied shrinking down slightly. "It's my safe place and it's really... personal. I mean I don't mind having you over, but you're a close friend..."
"I suppose that's understandable, but it's not like you're inviting a stranger in. Technically, whether your relationship was good or otherwise, you have known Roman since elementary school have you not?" Logan tried to reassure him.
"I guess..." Virgil replied shifting awkwardly. "I don't know... the thought of it just feels... weird."
Logan watched him for a moment. "Virgil, have you considered that perhaps it isn't bringing him into your home exactly that is the issue? You said it yourself it's your safe place, you feel most comfortable there, you tend to act more... like yourself. So perhaps you're rather more scared of having Roman in particular being the one close to you in that environment."
"What do you mean scared of Roman in particular?" Vigil asked sounding slightly panicked.
"Virgil as oblivious as I am, to mine and most others, romantic and emotional escapades I can still obviously see your feelings towards Roman have changed." Logan stated bluntly.
"Wha-? How??" Virgil asked not denying his friend's accusation. "You are practically never around us."
"But I can tell your shift in attitude. Every time you used to speak of him you would have a very frustrated demeanor, but now you look around like your afraid someone's listening." Logan pointed out. "Besides I may not have been around the two of you, but Patton has."
"Patton? You guys talk about me and Roman?" Virgil asked.
"On occasion." Logan shrugged. "You are looking over the point. From experience, I can tell you it is probably best you do not deny you have feelings, and embrace them instead."
"I'm not denying anything..." Virgil sighed. "Fine, yes I may have a crush on Roman, and if you tell anyone I will kill you, but it doesn't matter. I can never act on it. He will never feel the same way."
"I won't speak of the matter with anyone else, and you are not certain he won't ever feel the same." Logan told him.
"You're kidding me right?" Virgil replied. "Rivals since kindergarten remember, besides even if that weren't the case, he would never go for someone like me."
Logan sighed knowing he would get no where with his friend.
"Wait a second..." Virgil paused remembering something from only moments ago. "From experience?" Virgil questioned. "Did something happen with Patton?"
"Oh..." Logan straightened his glasses, his cheeks tinting pink. "As a matter of fact something did. Did I forget to mention the fact that we got together?"
"Yes, yes you did forget to mention that very important fact!" Virgil expressed quickly.
"Wow, your nerves must really be on edge, you almost never raise your voice at anyone but Roman." Logan stated.
"Don't change the subject." Virgil scolded slightly.
"I haven't a clue what you're talking about, I'm not altering any subject." Logan defended.
"You're a bad liar..." Virgil sighed. "But really..." he paused letting a rare small smile grace his lips. "I'm happy for you guys." His smile then fell into a more serious expression. "And I'm really glad you're allowing yourself to move on..."
Logan fought back a smile himself. "I am as well."

"I am dressed okay, right?" Roman asked Virgil from the drivers seat of his car after school as they were driving toward the emo boy's house. "This isn't some fancy dinner were I have to impress your mother."
"You're dressed fine. Besides my mother already likes you." Vigil then sneered a bit. "Not surprising though she's easily impressed."
"Shut up." Roman chuckled.
Virgil looked out the window, joking around was really just a distraction from his nerves. He almost felt himself stop breathing as they pulled into his driveway.
"Alright then, let's do this." Roman replied getting out of the car.
Why is he the one who's so carefree? Virgil thought. He's the one meeting someone new, why do I have to suffer? For God's sake we aren't even a couple!
He was snapped out of his thoughts by his door being opened for him.
He saw Roman holding it open and stepped out of the car. "You don't have to open the door for me all the time."
"Just trying to start off with a good impression." He leaned a little closer lowing his voice to a whisper. "In case she's watching again." He winked.
Virgil blushed a little before quickly walking past him and toward his house. Stupid Prince...
He and Roman were walking up the porch steps and when they were about to open the door it swung open.
"Roman!" Virgil's mother greeted warmly. "It's lovely to finally meet you." She pulled him into a hug.
Roman seemed to be taken by surprise, but didn't seem uncomfortable. "It's lovely to meet you as well m'am." He gave a quick hug back.
"Oh please!" She pulled away a waved playfully. "Call me Ruby." She then put her hands on either side of his face. "My my how handsome you are."
Virgil looked away from his parental figure in embarrassment. Mother why? I didn't ask for this.
Roman laughed. "Thank you, so I've been told." He joked arrogantly.
This in turn made Ruby laugh. "Oh how rude of me, come in come in. It's chilly out here." She let them both into the smallish entryway.
Virgil started taking off his shoes and noticed Roman had as well, so the three of them made there way to the living room.
"I have to finish dinner now, but it should be done shortly. Honey, be polite and entertain our lovely guest, I'll call you guys when it's ready." His mother smiled before wandering into the kitchen.
Roman started toward the couch before Virgil stopped him. "No, upstairs. She won't stop checking in on us if we stay down here." He pointed to the staircase.
Roman chuckled at that. "Whatever you say."
They both started walking upstairs and Virgil turned right into his bedroom, opening the door wide enough for Roman to walk in and then closing it behind both of them.
"I like your room." Roman stated looking around. He took notice of the small desk, and bookshelf that was built around it filled with books, movies, and games. There was also a small tv in the corner by the doorway that had a gaming console attached to it. The walls were a dark purple, and the black closet doors had a few band posters plastered over them. He walked over to the bed with the thin strands of lights hanging on the wall above it and sat down. "It's very... comfortable, calming in a way."
"Yeah..." Virgil sat on the opposite end of the bed. "That's kind of the point."
"Makes sense." Roman nodded. "So uh... where's your dad?"
Virgil grew quiet for a moment seeming surprised by the question. "Um... I don't know." He grew quiet, grabbed one of the many pillows on his bed, and placed it in his lap. "He walked out the front door when I was eight, and we haven't seen him since."
"Oh..." Roman replied in surprise. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine." Virgil shrugged looking to the light grey carpeted floor. "It was a while ago."
"Wait... But when we started running lines together you told me you didn't want to do it here because your dad worked at home." Roman pointed out in confusion.
"I lied. That's just what I say when I don't want people over, or when I want to avoid the subject..." Virgil replied. "He isn't exactly my favorite thing in the world to talk about."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel upset." Roman apologized again.
"It's really not a big deal." Virgil assured him. "Besides I though you liked upsetting me."
"What?" Roman asked in surprise. "Virgil no, sure I used to like to bother you a lot, and I still like to mess around, but I never wanted to actually upset you."
"Sorry, I guess in my school experience everyone was constantly trying to upset me." Virgil stated sadly.
Roman was about to say something when suddenly a pillow behind him moved by itself. "What was that?" He asked in slight panic.
Virgil smirked at his fear. "That." He stated reaching behind him to grab something from inside the pillows. "Is Luna." He showed off the small cat in his hand.
"Oh my gosh she's so tiny, how old is she?" Roman suddenly smiled petting the warm creature on the head.
"She's four or five years now." Virgil replied as the cat snuggled up to his arm and pulled at one of his hoodie strings. "She was just the runt of the litter. The shelter had to feed her because her siblings would always push her away. She almost died at two weeks, but she pulled through. She'll probably never get any bigger than this though."
"Awe well I think it just makes her ten times more adorable." Roman rubbed Luna's belly, causing her purring to grow louder as she laid in her owner's arms. "When'd you get her."
"When we started high school..." Virgil answered softly stroking the animal as she began to sleep. "She's actually a certified therapy pet. My mom got her for me when my anxiety was starting to get hard to control."
"Does she help?" Roman asked.
Virgil nodded. "A lot actually. She can sense when I get upset, so she lays on me, it's calming to feel her purr."
"Just like you said it helped to feel me talk when I found you in the locker room." Roman pointed out.
"Exactly..." Virgil replied feeling his cheeks warm at the memory.
"Well I'm glad to know you have someone else to help you out." Roman smiled still looking at the cat.
Virgil gave him a sideways glance. Someone else...? He was removed from his thoughts when the cat suddenly rolled out of his arms and curled up in the blanket behind them.
"Hey." Roman seemed to get distracted by something and got up to grab Virgil's guitar, and bring it to the bed. "Do you play?" He asked gently strumming the strings.
"Yeah, I have been for a few years now." Virgil replied.
"That's so cool!" Roman expressed. "I always wanted to play guitar. I know piano, and I used to play the violin a little when I was younger, but my mother always said she didn't think guitar was a 'proper' sounding instrument. I think it's really because she dated a deadbeat musician in college, and you know how that story usually goes."
Virgil chuckled a little, earning a smile from the other male.
Roman then strummed again.
"You aren't going to get a proper sound if you don't play any cords." Virgil stated.
"Really? Okay then teach me some." Roman challenged.
Virgil blinked back at him for a second before shrugging. "Fine." He moved closer putting Roman's fingers in the proper position on the neck of the guitar, and then letting him strum. He advised him on what cord he played and then taught him a couple others. "Okay now you try."
Roman took his time positioning his fingers but when he strummed it sounded awful.
Virgil cringed. "Oh no." He sat up to his knees, getting behind Roman, to better help him see what he was instructing. He then wrapped his hand around the neck of the guitar, placing Roman's hand into the right position. "Okay here this finger goes up a little farther, and this one over another string." He then wrapped his other hand around around Roman's shoulder, guiding his left. "Now strum."
The cord itself sounded better, but a little weak.
Virgil chuckled again. "It May be easier for you with a pick." He reached around Roman to get one from off his nightstand.
Roman felt himself blush as Virgil's hand brushed against his cheek on the way back.
"Here." Virgil placed the small item in his hand. "Try strumming again.
The cord played perfectly.
"See." Virgil replied returning to his original position next to him. "It's easy."
"Yeah for you." Roman laughed. "Here." He handed the guitar to him. "Play me something."
"Play what?" Virgil asked in confusion.
"Anything." The princely figure shrugged. "Just sing along to it."
"Oh no no no, I am not singing." Virgil shook his head.
"Come on." Roman persisted. "I've heard through the grapevine that you have a great voice. Besides," he put his hands up in surrender. "It's just me here. No judgement."
Virgil stared at him for a few moments before giving in. He sighed, positioning his guitar in his lap, and making sure it was in tune. He then began to strum a few cords, his voice coming in quietly. "Please... don't see, just a boy caught up and dreams and fantasies. Please... see me. Reaching out for someone I can't see."
Roman watched Virgil as he sang, obviously trying to ignore the fact that he was being watched. He moved a little closer to better here the others soft voice.
When Virgil finished the song he opened his eyes to see Roman watching him with a smile on his face.
"See, why are you so nervous? You have a lovely voice." The taller complimented.
"I mean... I guess it's okay, but that's not really the issue with not wanting to sing in front of people." Virgil stated. "A lot of the time I don't even understand it myself. It just... appears that I'm crazy I guess."
Roman frowned remembering what the soccer players had said about Virgil being insane. "You aren't crazy. You just have something that makes it hard for you to handle certain situations. Your anxiety may be heightened compared to a lot of people's, but It's more common then you think."
"How do you know?" Virgil asked.
"Oh um... after I found you in the locker too that day I looked up a bunch of stuff on anxiety, and panic attacks." Roman admitted bashfully.
Virgil seemed surprised. "Why?"
"Well... so I better understand it in case it ever happens when you're around me again." Roman answered genuinely.
Virgil blinked at him. No one but Logan and his mother had ever made the effort to understand his anxiety before. "But... why would you care?"
"Because..." Roman trailed off. "You seemed absolutely terrified. It was scary for me to just watch, so I couldn't imagine how you must have been feeling. I don't want that to happen again, and if it does I wanna help stop it."
Virgil noticed how close Roman had got as they were talking and suddenly felt like there was a lump in his throat. His heart started beating faster and nerves took over him, but it wasn't like an attack... the nerves weren't terrifying, they were more... exhilarating in a way. It was the same when Roman had kissed him at practice, or when they hugged in the locker room, and even the week before at the dance and in the car. It wasn't anxiety, but a type of nervous Virgil had never quite experienced before. It was almost overwhelming.
He thought of Logan's words: So perhaps you're rather more scared of having Roman in particular being the one close to you in that environment.
Virgil felt the words hit him as he stared at Roman, who was no more than an inch in front of him, and let his eyes wander his crush's face. When he noticed he'd been staring at his lips for a few seconds too long he quickly turned his head and jumped off the bed, placing his guitar against it. "We should check on dinner. I bet mom's probably almost done by now. Come one, you can bring Luna I'm sure she's hungry."
Roman was slightly shocked, but then carefully grabbed to small cat and quickly followed Virgil downstairs.
-&-
"So, I already know how Virgil liked it, but did you have fun at the dance Roman?" Virgil's mother asked as they were all finishing dinner.
"I did. I always do though. I've been to every dance. My best friend helps plan them, so I figured I should support him as much as I can." Roman explained.
"How sweet." She smiled. "Virgil doesn't usually go, but I think that's just because he didn't have a date like you before, so it wasn't the same experience."
Virgil choked on his milk slightly, he tried to control his coughs and wasn't able to speak.
His mother looked at him in confusion before Roman's voice interrupted. "Actually Virgil and I went with a group, the drama kids who are all in the play with us, but it was still a fun experience."
"I see, well that's great. I'm glad to finally see my boy having such a good time." Ruby smiled.
Roman smiled back. "We all are." He then looked at the clock on the wall. "It's late I should probably be getting back home, or my mother will start to wonder." He stood up. "But it was lovely to meet you Ruby." He shook her hand.
"You as well Roman." She returned the gesture gleefully. "Virgil, show him out."
Virgil sighed but got up from the table and walked Roman to the front door, Luna following close behind. Virgil picked her up so she wouldn't run outside, and opened the door.
"I'll see you tomorrow Virgil." Roman smiled at him.
Virgil was slightly taken aback by the expression, but nodded. "See you tomorrow."
He watched as Roman walked off his porch and got into his car before he closed the door. He released Luna, leaned against it, and sunk to the floor, grumbling dramatically as he rapidly racked his fingers through his hair. Dear god help me, I've fallen far to hard for this boy.
