Part 23
Patton had been going to school all of the week following the night of the party. Not to his surprise he didn't interact with Ashton at all. He knew he was at school, but he always sat far away. Patton didn't know exactly who was avoiding who, or maybe it was more of a mutual agreement... he had seen Ashton change direction in the halls a few times or duck into a nearby room, but that was really the most he'd see of him. Whoever was avoiding who aside, they were doing a damn good job of it.
Patton also couldn't really decide how he felt. He was conflicted at the party, he was conflicted when he left, he was conflicted the whole rest of the weekend, and he was still conflicted now.
He absolutely hated it too. Fear him, like him, find mutual fondness, he didn't care, he just wanted to feel something towards Ashton... Right now the only definite thing he knew was that he could never like Ashton as strongly as he liked Logan...
Logan seemed to be doing the complete opposite. He wasn't avoiding Patton, but rather making it apparent to be around him a lot more. Maybe he was being protective, maybe he was trying to make Patton feel better seeing as though he wasn't talking to one of the three people he talked to on a regular basis, and maybe... it was something else. Patton hoped it was something else.
In fact the only thought that brought him happiness, instead of complete confusion, for each passing day, was the realization that he would be going to the dance with Logan this weekend. Date or not, going to a dance together had to be a step towards something... something.
"Patton? Patton."
A voice called the boy out of his thoughts. He looked up at Logan who sat across from him in their English class. They were doing partner work so had positioned their desks to face each other.
"I-I'm Sorry," Patton apologized. "Did you say something?"
"I asked what you thought the theme of the poem we just read in class was," Logan sighed putting down his pen.
"Oh... um... I honestly don't know," Patton admitted with a sigh of his own. "I wasn't paying attention."
"Patton, are you alright? You seem to be exceedingly distracted as of late," Logan pointed out with slight concern.
"Yeah!" Patton smiled. "I just have a lot on my mind, but I'm okay."
Logan didn't look convinced. "Are you sure?" He frowned lowering his voice a bit. "Considering what happened last weekend it wouldn't at all be shameful to be affected so drastically."
Patton shook his head quickly. "No, no I'm fine really." He smiled a little brighter. "Besides I'm really just excited for the dance this weekend!"
Logan felt a small blush form on his cheeks at how fondly Patton seemed to be looking at him. He looked down to hide it and picked up his pen again. "Right, as am I, but let us for now focus on the assignment at hand."
"Right." Patton replied picking up his copy of the poem. "Let me just re-read it real quickly."

That Friday Patton had gone home with Roman, because he finally had some free time from play practice, and they hadn't spent time together in forever. They were on Roman's couch eating popcorn and laughing about just about anything like they always did together.
"Man I don't think I've laughed this hard in a while," Roman stated before attempting to eat a full handful of popcorn, but half of it ended up falling onto his shirt.
Patton chuckled at the scene. "Me neither. Guess both of our lives have been a little hectic lately."
"You can say that again." Roman sighed.
"How has Virgil been?" Patton asked raising his brow at the princely figure.
"Why are you asking me?" Roman replied after a bit of hesitation.
"Oh I don't know~ Why would I ask you?" Patton's voice took on a teasing tone.
"He's fine I guess." Roman's cheeks tinted pink as he looked away from his friend. "What about Logan? How are things with him?"
"What about him?" Patton repeated his question back to him. "We're still just friends." He sat up folding his hands in his lap.
"Are you sure about that?" Roman smirked. "I may or may not have stopped by a certain coffee shop last Saturday and saw a certain two people there. Sure as hell looked a lot more like a date to me."
Patton felt a blush of his own creep to his cheeks as he looked to the carpeted floor. "Well it wasn't... besides you go to the coffee shop all the time with Virgil."
"Yeah, and with a whole group of people," Roman stated. "Not alone and being all 'coupley'"
Patton frowned his shoulders sinking in slightly. But we aren't a couple... why couldn't he bring himself to say that? It was the truth right? Then why didn't it feel right saying it?
"Patton..?" Roman sat up placing a hand on his friend's back. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know what to do anymore Roman..." Patton whispered so quietly he himself could hardly hear it. "Everything bad keeps happening."
"What do you mean..?" Roman asked feeling saddened.
Patton explained what happened the previous weekend with Ashton, and how he had been feeling so conflicted about the whole situation. He completely opened up to his friend, finally finding himself able to vent. He was shaking and rubbing his hands together uncomfortably as he spoke.
"And on top of everything, there's Logan." Patton's voice cracked as he seemingly was holding back tears. "I know he said he just wanted to be friends, but he keeps doing things that confuse me. I just can't understand it! I feel like I don't understand anything anymore, a-and I-I just... I do t know how to feel anymore..." His tears broke free and he hid his face in his hands.
"Patton... Come here." Roman pulled his friend into a comforting hug. "It's okay... everything will work itself out in the end..."
Patton hugged his friend back. He realized that aside from the small embrace they shared in the hallway weeks ago they really hadn't had a hug in a while. He felt a bittersweet smile tug at his lips as he felt the kind of comforting feeling only two people of his knowledge could bring with their hug. Roman and his older brother. Logan was different of course... Sometimes it was nice to just spend time with those friends closest to you
"Thanks Roman..." he stated feeling himself slowly calm.

Patton straightened his tie the next evening, and ran his hand through his hair in front of the mirror for the fiftieth time. His nerves were going crazy and he felt hot. He looked to the clock and saw it was 6:28. He took a deep breath and sat down on his couch to slip on and tie his dress shoes. By the time he finished the doorbell rang. He took a quick deep breath before going to answer it letting a big smile stretch across his face.
"Hey Logan!" He chirped swinging the front door open. He tried not to obviously drool over how amazingly attractive Logan looked in a suit. Keep eye contact Patton. Remember where you stand with him.
"Good evening Patton. You look quite charming," Logan greeted.
Patton felt a blush creep onto his cheeks and looked away to hide his bashful smile. "Thanks... you clean up pretty well yourself."
Logan flashed a small smile of his own. "Shall we get going?"
"Right," Patton stated quickly gathering his phone, keys, jacket, and wallet. He then stepped onto the front stoop with Logan closing and locking the door behind him. "I'm ready."
"Then we shall begin on our way," Logan replied stepping down the concrete steps towards his car.

After Logan and Patton arrived at the dance Patton's favorite song was playing; so understandably he had gotten over his nerves and dragged Logan onto the dance floor as he screamed the lyrics to "shut up and dance with me" with the rest of the large amount of students around them. He danced to the best of his ability, which wasn't much, but he didn't care because he was just glad Logan was there with him and he was even able to make him laugh a few times.
Now Logan was in the bathroom, so Patton decided to take a short break and get something to drink. He was standing by the punch table sipping on his second cup full, after he'd downed the first one, when he felt someone tap him on the shoulder.
"Alexandria!" He exclaimed over the music. "It's nice to see you here!"
"You too!" She smiled. "Jared actually grew the balls to ask me to a dance for once!"
Patton laughed. "Aren't you two dating?! Why wouldn't he ask before?"
She shrugged dramatically. "I don't know! I'm not exactly an expert on the mind of a teenage boy!"
"You and me both!" Patton replied taking another sip of his drink.
"I saw you dancing with Logan!" she stated smiling and giving him a sideways glance. "It's funny, I wouldn't expect him to go to something like this!"
"Me neither!" Patton shrugged. "Maybe he's just trying something new!"
"Or maybe he was just fond of the company!" She flashed him a sly smile.
Patton felt himself blush. Do people really suspect we're together?
"Well there's Jared!" She stated throwing her empty cup into the trash near them. "It was nice talking to you!" She smiled before joining her boyfriend on the dance floor.
Patton sighed feeling slightly conflicted about where he stood with Logan again.
"Hey Patton! What's up buddy?!" Roman greeted walking up to him.
"Hey Roman!" Patton flashed him a genuine smile. "Are you enjoying the dance?!"
"I am! You guys did a great job!" Roman smiled back at him reaching to grab and eat a small cookie from the table behind his friend.
"Thank you!" Patton said swaying back and forth proudly.
Roman laughed. "By the way, have you seen Virgil?!"
"Virgil~?" Patton questioned teasingly. "Why?" He raised a brow. "Are you looking for him?"
Roman sighed rolling his eyes slightly. "Yes, we all are. The drama kids agreed to all come as a group, he was supposed to be here almost an hour ago, but nobody's seen him!"
"Hm... sorry no I haven't seen him either!" Patton replied honestly.
"Okay well thanks anyways! I'll see you later!" Roman replied starting to walk away.
"Bye!" Patton replied after him.
The song that was playing ended so there was a momentary quiet as the DJ announced the next song would be slower.
Patton threw his cup away as well. Logan had returned and was approaching him. Before Patton could say a word he was offered a hand.
"May I?" Logan asked.
Patton looked at his hand for a moment his eyes widening. "Um... of course..." he slid his hand into his crush's.
Logan then led him onto the dance floor again, grabbing his waist and getting into the proper position.
He's so close... Patton thought, his cheeks burning as they started to step slowly to the melody. He looked up to see Logan's expression and their eyes locked. He's staring at me... Patton could hardly keep track over how fast his heart was beating. He looked down again. I... I don't understand...
"Patton." Logan addressed him softly. "What's wrong?"
"I-I" he stuttered shaking his head. "I-I'm sorry." He quickly broke away from the other male and speed walked away through the crowd. He felt tears in his eyes again. I don't understand this anymore!
Logan was left a little shocked on the dance floor before he shook his head and composed himself slightly. "Patton??" He started after him desperately trying not to lose him in the crowd.
He broke free into the hallway and looked to his left and right, but didn't see Patton. He rounded the corner and say the boy in front of one of the long tall windows sitting on the ground with his knees pulled to his chest. Logan frowned approaching the crying boy. He quietly sat down next to him.
Patton looked at him before quickly looking in front of him again. "I-I'm sorry..." He sniffled. "I didn't mean to run off."
"It's okay." Logan remained calm despite the fact that seeing the boy in tears hurt him greatly. "Why did you?"
Patton took a few shaky breaths, wiping the tears from under his right eye before swallowing. "I...I know you said you just want to be f-friends, b-but I still have feelings for you, a-and..." he paused to compose himself slightly. "Sometimes the things you do confuse me. I know I'm probably just overthinking things, but when I realize that we can't be together, I-it h-hurts." He hid his face in his knees starting to cry again.
Logan felt his heart crack a little more. "I'm sorry Patton..." he put his arms around him. "I didn't know I made you feel that way..."
Patton sniffled again before leaning into Logan's chest, letting him comfort him.

Logan was standing with Patton at his door saying goodbye to him. It was quiet for a moment.
Patton was shyly looking to the side at his front door still finding it hard to look the other in the eyes. I hate that it's so awkward now... I just want this all to stop...
"Patton, I don't believe you will need to worry yourself over the status of our relationship anymore." Logan broke the silence with the blunt statement.
Patton pondered to himself for a moment before looking at the boy in front of him. "What do you mean by that?"
Logan took Patton's hand leaning down to press his lips against his cheek for a short moment. "Just don't worry." He whispered against his skin before leaning away again.
Patton had widened his eyes and could hardly bring himself to wave as Logan started walking down the stairs back to his car. What just happened?
