Chapter 9

Late that night Danny flung the bedsheets off his bed, making the butterflies fly. He went ghost and flew out of his house. He flew over the town invisibly. There were still people out and he didn't want to risk any chances.

"Now if I was a red clad superhero with a magic yoyo, where would I be," Danny muttered to himself.

He passed her house and quickly checked her room, only to find it empty. He whistled at the many Adrien pictures on the walls. "Man this girl got it bad," he told the butterfly next to him.

After a few minutes he found a superhero. However, it wasn't the one he was looking for.

A shadow was moving fast among the buildings. Something glinted every now and then and when Danny squinted he saw two green glows by his face.

"Well look who it is. Chat Noir." Danny mused to himself and followed the cat. "Impressive."

Suddenly the cat disappeared.

Danny paused invisibly in the air and blinked. "What." He flew closer to where he had seen him. Where did that kid go.

Suddenly he saw him. Chat Noir was hiding deep in the shadows, eyes squinted and looking at him with tensed muscles. Danny wouldn't have seen him had it not been for his enhanced eyesight. He quickly checked he was still invisible and was relieved when that was the case.

Then how...

The butterfies.

Danny groaned when he remembered his Papis and he turned around to see them flitting around him excitedly. He had never taken them out in a night stroll before.

That cat hadn't moved and seemed to be inspecting Danny's ladies with narrowed eyes. He slowly grabbed something from his belt and slid it open.

Danny heard a young voice come from him.

"My Lady? You might want to come see this. There are a flock of white akumas flying out here."

Danny smiled. If he couldn't find Marinette, then Marinette would come to him. But what should he do about Chat Noir.

Danny landed on a rooftop to wait for Ladybug and let his Papis settle down on him.

Chat blinked in confusion as one by one, the akumas disappeared in mid air. He slowly left his hiding spot and approached the spot where he saw the last of them disappear. He held out his hand and heard something shift. A few butterflies reappeared before disappearing again. "What?"

Chat's ears flitted around nervously and he thrust his hand out, connecting with something.

There was a yelp and Chat Noir jumped back with a gasp. "Who is there?" Nothing moved and he clutched his staff. "Get out. I know you are there."

Danny moaned inwardly. That cat had figured him out. What should he do. There was no way he could reveal himself. He decided to wait until Ladybug came. Please hurry up.

Chat Noir had no idea what was going on. He had only seen so many cleansed akumas with Danny. So unless Danny could suddenly turn invisible this must be some kind of akumatized person. "Hello?" he tried. "Common, man. Get out." He let his staff stretch and it hit something solid. Chat blinked when his staff went invisible too.

Then the akuma moved and...flew away?

Chat followed it, only knowing where it was by the butterflies following it. "Hey come back here!" He jumped after the thing and pounced on many places he thought it was.

Chat sniffed the air and his ears twitched. If he couldn't see it, then he would rely on his other senses. There!

The cat pounced and felt something solid under his paws. But the force had them both tumbling down the edge of the building and scattering on the ground.

"Meouw!" Chat yelped but quickly looked around himself before he could lose it.

His eyes widened when he saw a boy. He was the strangest akuma he had ever seen. The most simple one. Most akumas looked like carnival disasters. This kid could have been a normal person had he not been glowing.

Glowing green eyes met glowing green eyes.

"Sorry but I have to go."

Chat pounced and pinned the boy before he could...fly away?

"No. Who are you? Are you an akuma?"

The boy shook his head. "I'm nobody. Just forget about me."

Chat gasped as the kid literally slipped through his fingers and started to fly away. He ran towards him. "No don't leave. Why don't you stay and chat for a bit."

The boy stopped and chuckled. "Sorry. But I ghost to go. A lot of unfinished business to do and all."

Chat cocked his head. "You're a ghost? That certainly is a furprise."

He was shocked when the other laughed again. Nobody liked his puns.

"Yes, Chat. It was quite shocking for me too."

Chat Noir had no clue why the kid was holding his stomach and shaking with laughter.

"Anyways," the ghost straightened. "I was just ghosting around looking for someone to haunt. So if you'll excuse me."

Oh no, Chat was not letting this one slip through his fingers. "Wait we never got that chat. Don't be such a kitten."

"Chat Noir!"

Both boys turned around and breathed a sigh of relief. "Ladybug."

She landed and retracted her yoyo as her eyes caught Danny. "What are-" She caught herself, her eyes flitting to her partner. "Who are you?"

"Just a ghost passing by. I'm sorry for being an inconvenience. I'll be going now bye." He turned around to leave and Ladybug made no move to stop him. However Chat stepped in his way.

"No. You're not just leaving. Who are you? What are you doing here?"

Ladybug bit her lip. She knew Chat wouldn't just accept it. He was a good superhero that way. He didn't know this ghost could be trusted. But she didn't know what to say. She couldn't reveal Danny's secret after what they had just talked about. However, the ghost talked before she could say anything.

"Chill, Chat. I'm a friend. My name's Phantom." He struck out his hand, which Chat shook with hesitance.

"Hey. I'm Chat Noir. Wait a second." Chat frowned. "I know you. You're from that haunted town."

Phantom nodded. "Amity Park. I was just passing by and checking on the people in France. I've been hearing many stories about here but I see it's in good hands. So if you'll excuse me, I need to go back before Boxy drives everyone crazy."

Ladybug watched Danny fly away and she clapped her hands. "Well he's nice. Anyways I haven't seen any trouble and I've been having a sucky day so I think I'll be turning in. Same time tomorrow?"

"But."

She swung her yoyo and flew away, leaving her partner behind.

Chat scrunched his eyebrows together and scratched his cheek. "Why were those akumas following him?"

Ladybug redirected her path towards where she had seen Danny go.

"Phew!"

She jumped when a ghost appeared next to her.

"That was close. Your partner is really cool, Ladybug." Danny grinned at her. "He's really punny."

Ladybug groaned. "Of course you love his puns. It just drives me crazy. They're so lame!"

"Hey." Danny looked at her seriously. "I die for lame puns. So!" He gestured for her. "Shall we?"

After a bit of flying around and searching they settled in the middle of the park. They made sure it was deserted before landing.

Danny smiled at his Papis. "Back up, ladies. This is gonna get a little dangerous."

Marinette found it hilarious when they actually listened and settled on the ground a bit farther away.

"Now." Danny held up a hand and to Marinette's surprise it lit up green.

Her eyes glistened at the light as Danny let it swirl around. "Whoaaa."

Danny inspected his ectoplasm closely. It wasn't very different. He glanced at his butterflies and saw them staring at it intently. Thankfully none of them were moths so they didn't move towards the light. Danny didn't want to incinerate one of his Papis.

Danny did some tricks with the ecto energy. Everything was in working order. He moved on to ice.

It was nice to use his ice powers after so long. It had been wanting to be let loose some time already.

He accumulated the power in his hand, letting it build up.

Danny released the power. Everything within a five meter radius was covered in snow.

Marinette gasped in delight at the snowflakes swirling around her. "Tikki," she muttered. "Spots off."

There was a flash and Marinette's jumpsuit was removed to form a kwami. Tikki stared in awe when she saw the place. "Snow?"

"It's Danny," Marinette said, pointing.

Tikki flew closer, inspecting the energy in the ghost's hand. "What is that?"

"It's my ice power." Danny let an ice crystal form. "I can make snow and ice."

Tikki oohed. "How are you doing that?"

The boy let the crystal fall with a plop on the ground and tapped his chest area. "It's my core. It's like a heart for ghosts. They also give the ghost a special power. Mine is an ice core."

"But butterflies generally don't like the cold," Marinette said, confused. "They can't fly in it."

Danny shrugged. "They're not normal butterflies, are they?"

After a bit of playing around and testing, Danny came to the conclusion everything was normal. Danny figured the butterflies really weren't normal. They liked his ice core.

In fact, they nestled in the snow he had made.

Danny, in turn, was floating on his back with hands behind his head, resting.

"That was so cool." Marinette smiled as she played with the snow. She shivered.

Danny took notice. "Oh sorry. Is it too cold? I must be dropping the temperature again. I just really like the cold."

Marinette shook her head. "No I'm ok. Does the heat bother you then?"

Danny frowned. "Not that much. I have my own refrigerator in me so I'm always kinda cold. If it gets really hot, though, it could affect me. I'm not sure. It's never really happened before."

Tikki nestled deeper into Marinette's jaquet. "Can you do this as a human too?"

Danny nodded. "Mostly yes. Although this power." He demonstrated the ectoenergy. "is very difficult to make as human and it burns me slightly. The ice isn't that hard to make but it's also limited because I could get frostbite."

Marinette shivered again. She muffled a yawn. "I think I should go."

Danny twisted around to look at her better. "You tired? I thought you said you've had short nights before."

She nodded. "This cold is making me sleepy. I get it every winter."

Danny laughed and dropped from the air. "A real bug, aren't you."

Marinette glared softly before turning around and transforming. She looked slightly more energetic and grabbed her yoyo. She inspected Danny one last time. "You sure everything is fine?"

Danny smiled and nodded. "I'll tell you if something happens."

She hummed and swung her yoyo. "Thanks for letting me be here. See you tomorrow."

"Bye!"

Danny watched her leave, then he floated with legs crossed. He glanced at the butterflies that nestled deeper into the snow or on him.

He wanted one question answered. Where did the akumas' energy go?

The ghost boy closed his eyes.

Not to his ectoplasm. There was nothing different in that. And he healed the akumas in human form, where he barely had any ectoplasm.

Maybe his blood streams. His human body could be the one affected, not his ghost one. But he had already concluded there was nothing different there either.

His eyes snapped open. He looked at his Papis once more. The snow. Of course. They were attracted to that. That came from his ice core.

That's where the energy probably goes to. He closed his eyes again and concentrated deeply on it.

Yeah....there was something there. Not good, not bad. Just something...mingled within his core.

He yawned and stretched. He was too tired to deal with this right now. It wasn't affecting him in a bad way and that was good enough for him. Danny went home and fell asleep.

Oh man Chat and Danny are the ultimate bffs you guys. This can be big.
