Chapter 8

It was a few days later when Danny was really experiencing the effects of constantly being one of Hawkmoth's targets.

Nobody could see him, but they knew he was in class. All they could see was a mob of butterflies sitting perfectly still.

This worried them. Shouldn't Danny be moving?

Ivan let him be until he saw a black butterfly wriggle it's way through the others. The purified ones flew around it in protest but didn't dare touch it and made way to reveal Danny's hand encasing a sketchbook. The evil one soaked in the book.

"Ooh," Alix said. "Danny's not gonna be happy."

The white papillons dispersed from the 'akumatized' Danny and revealed a sleeping boy.

Ivan frowned and poked at him.

He didn't wake up but the moment the purple mask appeared he frowned and started twitching. The other butterflies fluttered around him, trying to comfort him but not touching him.

"Miss?" Ivan called out nervously. "Something's wrong. Danny isn't waking up and I think he's having a nightmare."

"In my class?" The science teacher chided. "He shouldn't be sleeping in my class."

Nino leaned a bit away from Danny in worry. "Guys someone wake him up."

Danny was hyperventilating now. His brow was covered in sweat and he grimaced in his sleep.

Ivan slowly grabbed the kid's shoulder and shook him lightly. "Danny? Hey dude? Wake up."

"Oh for the love of..." Kim pushed him away and yelled. "Danny!! Get your ass in gear!"

The boy sprang up, eyes wide. "The cat did it!" He blinked and looked around. "Wha-?" The purple outline suddenly shone brighter and Danny groaned, holding his head.

"Are you ok?" Ivan asked only to receive a painful moan in return.

"Where is it."

"Sketchbook," Alix singsonged making Danny growl.

He scowled and hissed. "I swear, old man. You put those things in one of my sketchbooks again you're done for, you hear me? I'll go find you and rip you apart molecule by molecule and I'll be laughing about it. So frik off." And he tore a paper off his book. He growled at the ruined page but let his head fall on the desk once more.

The rest of the class was surprised by his sudden outburst. Danny was usually never this aggressive.

Sabrina asked worriedly. "Are you alright?"

Danny waved his hand without looking up. "Yeah yeah. Just tired. He's been tormenting me the whole night and I need my sleep." Danny started mumbling to himself. "It's like he wants me to go and rip him a new one. I'll show him. Sleep first, then I'll go and punch him so hard butterflies will be dancing over his head. The last thing he'll see is my sleep deprived face. He's even worse than Skulker." He looked up and blinked owlishly. "I'm good. Sorry to interrupt the class. What class are we in anyway? Whatever, go on and ignore me while I catch up with a friend. His name is sleep and we haven't talked in ages. So bye."

And he promptly started snoring again, disappearing under a blanket of Papillons.

Marinette frowned. That was it. The last straw. She wasn't going to let the guy continue like this. So after class she went to the bathroom and opened her little bag. Tikki flew out and smiled at Marinette.

"Tikki." She said. "We have to do something. He keeps like this, he's gonna wear himself out. Do you have any idea of what is happening with him?"

Like last time, the Kwami shook her head. "I don't know, Marinette. But I agree with you. Something has to be done. We both know a person who understands all about Kwamis and their effects."

Marinette pursed her lips. "Are you sure? He might figure out my identity."

Tikki smiled sadly. "It's the only way to help him."

The girl nodded. "Ok. I'll take him after class."

After school Marinette waited for Danny at the entrance and grabbed his arm the moment he stepped out. "Danny, we're getting help for you. Now! And don't tell me not to worry about it because this can't go on like this."

Danny looked at her blankly before what she said sunk in. His eyes widened. "You're not talking to my parents right?"

Marinette froze. "You didn't tell them about this?"

He shook his head and she sighed. "No. I'm not taking you to your parents but you should tell them. I know someone who can help you. If anyone knows what is happening, it's him. And no complaining, you're going to him."

Danny shrugged and let her drag him. "Right behind you, madam."

A lot of dragging and searching later Marinette opened the door to a small spa house. She looked around. "Master Fu?"

Danny followed behind her, yawning. "Who is this guy anyway? Oh yeah. I could really use some spa treatment. But tell him not to use those stones. I don't even know what they're for but I distrust them. You're paying for this."

Marinette frowned and looked at him exasperated. "He isn't a spa assistant. He's a healer. And we're not here for that."

"Then what?"

Marinette ignored him and slowly slid open a door. "Master Fu? Can I talk to you?"

She walked in to see him working on a client. Danny poked his head from the door and looked at them with half lidded eyes. "And what is this then. A Chinese ritual?"

Marinette looked like she didn't know where to put her hands. "Oh I'm sorry to eh interrupt. We'll come back later."

Master Fu paused and looked at Marinette and nodded. "I am almost done, Marinette. Please wait outside."

She nodded and pushed Danny out the door. They sat down and waited. It wasn't long before the client stepped out and thanked Master Fu and walked away. Master Fu smiled at the two teens. "You may come in now."

The two stepped inside and as requested by Master Fu got comfortable....on the floor. But Danny wasn't about to complain.

Fu sat in front of them. "Ah. The Garcon Papillon. I was hoping to meet you. But I must ask, Marinette, what drove you to bring him here?"

Marinette shifted, trying to look through the cloud of restless butterflies. "Well, I have reason to think that this whole purifying of the akuma business is giving Danny bad side effects and I wanted to make sure. I thought you might know something."

Master Fu hummed and inspected Danny as he calmed his Papis down. "Shhh. Common girls. What's got you so active. Settle down. You're making me dizzy." At his encouragement the butterflies settled around him on the floor or on his body. A few nestled in his hair.

"Can we start with introductions?"

Danny bowed his head, trying not to move too much. "Hey there. My name's Danny. Nice to meet you, Mister Fu."

The old man smiled a bit at the boy's lack of manners. "Nice to meet you too, Danny. Let's get right to the point, shall we? Do you have any idea of why these cleansed akumas like you? Normally, they go right back to Hawkmoth after being purified."

Danny frowned. "Shouldn't the first question be: 'How is it possible I can cleanse them in the first place?'"

Fu shrugged. "I'm guessing you have already asked yourself that question a lot but if you have come up with an answer then, by all means, tell me."

Danny shifted uncomfortably. "Uuuh. No I don't have an answer to that. Or the first question. I thought that maybe because I cleansed them, the butterflies stay with me."

Fu nodded. "You're right. When Ladybug purifies an Akuma, the energy is released and returns to Hawkmoth. However, you don't release it. You keep it within you. The Akuma follows the energy and right now, it's you."

Danny nodded, that made sense. "But does that mean I'm gonna become evil," he asked slowly and was greatly relieved when Fu shook his head.

"Do you know about Miraculous holders, Danny?"

Danny narrowed his eyes in concentration. "I know what a miraculous is. It's the power source for Ladybug and Chat Noir's abilities. So I'm guessing a miraculous holder is the person with the miraculous." He absentmindedly shooed a butterfly from his field of vision.

"That's right. Miraculouses were made a long time ago. They were supposed to be for the good of humanity and help out. However, one of these miraculouses have fallen in the wrong hands."

"Ohh." Danny held up a finger. "The fact that it's being used for evil doesn't mean it is evil."

"Exactly. The butterfly miraculous was supposed to be used to make superheroes. Hawkmoth uses it wrongly but it is the same energy. And now it's within you. If it's evil or not depends on how you use it."

Marinette gasped. "So does he have the same powers as Hawkmoth?"

Master Fu cocked his head, inspecting Danny. "Time will tell, Marinette. Now, Danny."

The boy had been looking away with glazed eyes, thinking about how this could affect his ghost half, when he was called. "Yeah?"

"Care to tell us how you can cleanse the Akumas?" Master Fu had a special glint in his eye as he saw Danny's eyes widen slightly before the kid adopted a convincingly relaxed posture.

"What do you mean? I told you I don't know how that happens." Danny eyed the guy suspiciously.

"Mmmh. Maybe you will tell us if we tell you a big secret too?" Master Fu smiled.

Danny snorted. "I doubt that would be a fair exchange."

"Wait." Marinette's eyes widened and she stared at Danny in betrayal. "You know something about this? You know how it's happening?!"

"You can trust us, Danny," Master Fu encouraged and Danny narrowed his eyes.

"Tell me your secret first. I'll judge whether it's worthy enough to reveal my own."

"Very well." Master Fu stood up and Marinette freaked out.

"No wait. Are you sure about this? But he can't- But I can't just-"

Master Fu nodded. "I am very sure, Marinette. You don't have to, but he needs to know more about this if we want to solve this puzzle. Wayzz, you may come out."

Danny yelped when a small floating creature appeared and greeted him. It was green and had such a large head Danny understood why the creature floated instead of walking. Those tiny legs couldn't possibly hold it.

"Ummm hi?" Danny greeted, slightly insecure.

The thing floated closer to him and smiled. "I appreciate all the help you are giving us and I admire your selflessness in this."

Danny was at a loss for words. "Uuh yeah yeah no problem. Can I ask you something?" Danny narrowed his eyes. "What the heck are you?"

Fu chuckled. "Wayzz is a kwami. Kwamis reside in the miraculous and accompany the heroes."

Danny calmed down slightly after realizing the creature didn't mean any harm. "So they're sidekicks?"

"Danny!" Marinette chided him but Wayzz only laughed.

"No. They give the heroes their power."

"Didn't the miraculous do that?"

"No. That is only their home and a way to transfer the Kwami's power into the person wearing the miraculous."

Danny exhaled deeply and leaned back, taking everything in. "So are you a miraculous holder too?" He asked incredulously and inspected the old man.

Fu grinned. "Of course. I am more than capable of fighting villains."

Wayzz crossed his tiny arms and scowled at his holder who's grin disappeared. "But I am sitting this one out for a bit and letting Ladybug and Chat Noir do their thing."

Danny laughed. "I wish I could see you in action."

Master Fu winked. "You will. You just wait. I just have to convince mister cranky pants over there."

Wayzz flew closer to Danny and whispered loudly. "It's not going to happen."

Danny snickered before a thought struck him. He turned to Marinette who didn't seem all that shocked. "You knew about him?"

She nodded hesitantly. "Yeah. He told me about all this some time ago." She exchanged a glance with Master Fu, which Danny missed.

"So Danny," Master Fu called for the boy's attention. "We have told you our secret, will you tell us yours?"

There was a pause as Danny thought it through. He sighed and buried his head in his hands. He could live with telling the man, but Marinette. He glanced at her. They saw each other everyday at school. She was best friends with a blogger who risked her life to put things on the internet!!

Master Fu noticed his indecisive look towards the girl and he smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry. She's trustworthy."

Danny was obviously not buying it and Marinette groaned. She looked at Master Fu and he shrugged. "Tell you what. I have my own secret."

Danny furrowed his eyebrows. He doubted her secret was as important as his.

Marinette was having the same doubts. But if Danny was so reluctant to hide it, it must be something.

"Alright." Danny interrupted her thoughts. "It's a deal." He waited expectantly.

She fidgeted, trying to build her courage. She took a deep breath but before she could say anything a squeaky voice was heard. "Alright enough."

And out flew another big headed creature. It smiled at him and waved. "Hello, Danny. My name is Tikki and I am Marinette's kwami."

Danny stared at it openmouthed. He took in the red color and the black spot on the forehead. He glanced between the kwami and Marinette. "Wha- so you- you're Ladybug?!?" He stood up in shock and buried his hands in his hair. "What??"

"Shout it out a bit louder, will you," Wayzz muttered.

Marinette wrung her hands nervously and nodded. "Yes, I'm Ladybug."

Danny plopped down wideeyed. He stared into space as the facts sunk in. "Oh."

"Now tell me about yours," Marinette said, eager to change the topic.

Danny didn't move. He just stared at the ground silently. He didn't move a muscle as there was a flash of light and two rings enveloped him.

Marinette gasped when Danny suddenly changed into that ghost superhero from Amity Park. What was his name? Wasn't it Danny? They even had the same name??

Master Fu blinked in shock. Well this was way different than what he had imagined it would turn out. He didn't know what was going on. Did Danny have a kwami of his own that made his appearance change? Why hadn't he ever heard of it?

There was a silence as everyone took in all of the confusing information.

Wayzz was the first to break the silence. "Sorry but can I ask a question?" Everyone's attention was on him and he looked at Danny. "What are you?"

"You're that- that hero from where you come from," Marinette stuttered.

Danny nodded and looked at her with wide eyes. "And you're Ladybug. I can't believe it. It makes so much sense. How didn't I see that before?!"

Marinette shrugged but Master Fu interrupted. "I am lost. And I don't like that. So please, Danny. Enlighten me."

"On what?"

"On.....everything."

"Alright." Danny sucked in some air and tried to narrow it down. "I come from Amity Park, the most haunted town in the world. My parents are ghost hunters and invented a portal that lead to the Ghost Zone. It didn't work at first and I turned it on while in it. That turned me half ghost. My parents don't know about it. They hunt ghosts, please don't tell them. I decided to use my powers to fight off ghosts too and I called myself Danny Phantom. My parents heard of the supervillains here and we moved here." Danny paused to catch his breath.

Master Fu was quiet.

Tikki flew up to the ghost boy's face. "So the akumas' cleansing have something to do with...this ghostly business?"

Danny nodded. His Papis had latched onto him as soon as he transformed. He waved a few away from his face and those fluttered around a bit before attaching onto another part of his body. "I'm pretty sure I am able to cleanse akumas because of the ectoplasm in my body. I have no idea how it all works but...yeah."

"Ectoplasm?" Marinette asked.

Danny nodded. "It's what ghosts are made of. So yeah. This is all I know. And Marinette, I won't tell anyone if you don't."

She smiled. "Deal, ghost boy." She paused. "So do you know if this is affecting you in any way?"

Danny shook his head. "No idea. I haven't gone ghost since I came to France. For now everything feels normal."

Master Fu put a hand on his chin. "Given that you're the only one to know enough about this ghostly business to figure out whether it's bad I will leave you to it. I advice you take some time alone and test out whatever powers you probably have and check if it is all working accordingly."

Danny nodded, smiling. "Great idea. I'll do it tonight." He stood up. "Well, it has been great meeting you, Mister Fu."

The old man straightened as well and shook the boy's hand. "Likewise. It has been an honor meeting the hero Garcon Papillon."

Danny blushed and transformed back. "Bye Wayzz."

"Goodbye. Keep doing what you are doing but take care of yourself." Wayzz waved his tiny hand.

Marinette followed Danny out the door after saying her goodbyes. She ran to catch up with Danny. "Can I be there? When you test your powers out?"

Danny frowned but shrugged. "Sure why not. Tikki is also invited. I'll come pick you up. Just to warn you, it'll be late at night so don't wait up."

"That's ok." Marinette waved her hand. "I stay up a lot for patrols."

"Oh that's right," Danny paused to think that through. "It's gonna get some getting used to."

Marinette laughed. "And you being a retired superhero isn't."

"I'm not retired!" Danny yelled offended. "Just...out of commision."

"You sound like Master Fu."

Danny smiled. "I would gladly help but...you know.....secret identity and all that."

"Yeah." They walked along silently but stopped when they got to a bakery. Marinette turned to Danny. "So wanna come meet my parents?"

"You live here?" The teenager looked up at the bakery when a smell hit his sensitive nose. "Oh man. You live here?! Heck yeah I wanna come in."

And so Danny got to meet the Dupain-Chengs and of course got some of the delicious snack they offered. It is safe to say he had a great time.

The secret is out!! At least to Marinette and Fu
Tell me what u think
