Chapter 5
A few days later Danny closed the door of his locker slowly. He sighed sadly and made his way to class.
He'd talked to Tucker and Sam yesterday and found out Sam was dating another guy at school. She'd told him all about it and he had smiled and congratulated her but his heart just broke a bit more with every word. He was happy for her, he really was. But he couldn't help but feel a bit depressed.
He noticed how students kept sending him cautious looks. Some fearful as if he would attack them.
He was too sad to be bothered.
He sat down in his seat and let his chin rest on his crossed arms. He sighed once more.
"Hey Danny, you ok?"
Danny looked up to see Rose stand next to his desk with a worried expression.
Danny smiled slightly. "Of course. Why wouldn't I be?"
Juleka butted in. "Because you look kinda depressed."
"I'm fine, guys. Just not really in the mood today." He waved his hand a bit. Why were they making such a fuzz. Couldn't a guy be depressed for a day or two?
The two exchanged glances before going to their seats. He noticed them fidgeting slightly but ignored them.
Ivan, who sat next to him, also took notice. The bulky teen glanced at Danny worriedly. He knew what could happen if Danny was emotional. He was a nice guy. Ivan didn't want Danny to have to go through what most Parisians went through.
Class started and Ivan tried to pay attention to Mrs. Burgois but his thoughts kept going to the teen next to him.
His eyes darted to Danny once more and he gasped.
An outline of a purple butterfly was masking Danny's face and his eyes had darkened.
Ivan tensed. He had seen this before. On his little cousin after he had a tantrum. He knew what was happening.
But the weird thing was...Danny just kept staring at the teacher, looking as bored as ever. Sometimes his eyes would glaze over but he just shook his head and blinked.
The butterfly stayed.
"D- Danny?"
Danny hummed and glanced at him, making him flinch.
Danny furrowed his eyebrows. "Ivan. Are you ok?"
Ivan had frozen in shock. "Are YOU ok?"
Danny raised an eyebrow. "Yeah."
"Danny, Ivan," the teacher called. "Stop talking in class and- DANIEL." She gasped when the student looked at her with a purple glowing mask.
Everyone turned around and stared in shock. A few screamed.
Danny was getting freaked out. He was just a bit sad from his heartbreak. He should make others feel how it is to be heartbroken and get revenge on couples. He shook that thought out of his head again. His thoughts were getting weirder and weirder.
"Danny. Don't listen to him!" Marinette stood up and approached him slowly as if approaching a scared animal. "We can help."
"Whut." Danny was sure he had ended up in a school full of psychopaths. "What the fuck are you guys talking about."
His tone made everyone flinch and Mylene burst out crying.
Adrian watched him with wide eyes. "Danny. Just call down."
"I am calm," he all but growled getting frustrated. "Just freaking confused because nobody is telling me what is going on!!"
It was quiet for a few seconds as it got into everyone's heads that Danny wasn't getting an evil makeover.
They inspected his face. Danny raised an eyebrow.
"Do-don't you hear anything?" Nathaniel asked.
"You mean apart from the loud waves of crazy coming from you guys," he paused. "No, should I?"
Marinette turned to Chloe. "Can I have your mirror, Chloe?"
The blonde nodded and quickly grabbed it. Marinette showed Danny his reflection and he furrowed his eyebrows. He held up a hand, trying to touch the mask but it just phased over. "What is that?"
"Danny do you hear a voice in your head?" Marinette specified.
Danny shrugged. "Yeah, my own."
Marinette bit her lip. "That mask is from Hawkmoth. It's a connection between you and him. You should be able to hear him because he's talking to you telepathically."
Danny was only getting more and more confused. "Who is doing what now?"
Alix groaned. "See he doesn't know anything!!"
"Well, I'm sorry. Nobody is telling me anything," Danny sassed. He paused. "So you're telling me there's a guy talking to me telepathically right now?"
Marinette nodded.
"Umm." Danny felt weird talking to thin air. "Hello? Is anybody in there?"
Kim snorted. "No. It's all empty inside your skull." He yelped when he was punched by Max who hissed: "Now is not the time."
Danny ignored them and concentrated on any thoughts that weren't his own.
"Finally I am acknowledged!!"
He heard an old man's voice and yelped, startled by the sudden appearance. "Uuh yeah hi. Who are you?"
"I am Hawkmoth!! And I- why are you laughing."
Danny tried to keep in his laughter and ended up snorting. "What did you say your name was?"
"Hawkmoth and I-"
Danny burst out laughing. "Oh that's great. I didn't think anyone could do worse than the Box Ghost. Haha." He wiped his tears and cleared his throat. "So Hawkbutt. Whatcha doing in my brain."
"Do not call me that."
Danny could almost feel the pout.
"But I have a deal for you."
"A deal, you say?"
Immediately the whole class started shouting and making gestures at him until Danny shushed them. "I'm talking here guys. So what kind of deal is so important you couldn't just tell me yourself, instead of using telepathy."
"I will give you powers and let you get your revenge on couples for having what you do not."
Danny was hurt now. "Wow, really. You know insulting me isn't the way to get me struck a deal with you. Besides why would I want revenge on couples. That's stupid, not to mention cliché."
His classmates gave him a few sympathetic looks.
Danny fiddled with his pencil. "But what do you want in exchange anyway."
It felt like the guy had been waiting for that question because he shouted out dramatically. "Chat Noir and Ladybug's miraculouses!!"
Danny blinked. "A black cat and a ladybug's what now?"
"Their miraculouses. The earrings and the ring. Give them to me."
Danny furrowed his eyebrows. "I don't know about you, man, but last time I checked animals and insects don't wear jewelry."
He saw Alix facepalm.
Hawkmoth seemed confused. "The- the superheroes? Chat Noir and Ladybug?"
"Ooooooooh." Danny leaned back in his seat. "So those are their names. I've seen them once, and a bunch of times in pictures. Very original, those names. Why are you asking me to get their jewelry?"
"I uhhh." He seemed embarrassed. "I've tried with others but none worked so far."
"You mean the villains come from you?" Danny scowled. "You mean to tell me that you keep going from person to person, turning them evil so they can steal some kid's jewelry for you???" A small yes and Danny groaned, running a hand over his face. "I get out of Amity Park thinking I'll escape an old lonely fruitloop only to find another here."
One of his classmates gasped but Danny was too caught up in the conversation.
Hawkbutt took offense. "I am not a fruitloop!"
"You know, that's exactly what he used to say."
"Their miraculouses." Hawkmoth seemed to run out of patience. "You give them to me in exchange for your powers."
Too late, Danny thought. Out loud he said: "What's so special about their jewelry though. You could just go buy one of those things in a shop."
"Those are very powerful, boy." The guy was angry now. "Those are the source of Ladybug and Chat Noir's abilities."
"Oh. Is this the same rule the world thing or what do you want them for?"
There was a short silence. "That is none of your concern."
Danny inspected his nails. "Oh I think it is, given that you're invading my mind now. Something I do not appreciate." Danny growled that last bit out.
Hawkmoth seemed stunned into silence. "So...do you accept the deal?"
"No. Now get out of my head."
"You will accept!!"
Danny did his best to ignore him and turned his attention to his friends who were listening at his side of the conversation with wide eyes. Danny pointed at his head. "How do I get him out."
Adrien sprung forward. "The akuma. Where is it?"
Danny blinked. "The what now?"
Ivan pointed at Danny's notebook. "Maybe it's in his sketchbook?"
Adrien shrugged. "We could try." He reached for the book but Danny snatched it back. "What are you doing."
Nathaniel, who understood how it was to feel protective over one's drawings comforted him. "We need to break it so the akuma gets out. That will break your connection with Hawkmoth."
Danny had trouble paying attention thanks to the guy shouting in his head. But he understood and shook his head a negative. No way was he breaking his sketchbook. Over his half dead body.
It took a lot of persuasion but they got Danny to rip a page just the slightest bit. After all....he was half dead. Nothing happened and it just worsened Danny's mood. "Well that went great," he snapped. He didn't know why he was being so moody. Maybe the man in his head was affecting him.
"Try the pencil."
Danny pouted. "But I like this pencil."
They frowned at him and he sighed and snapped it in half.
Then something happened.
Danny shivered and blue mist escaped his mouth. He blinked as the two halves of his pencil started to glow and suddenly a butterfly detached itself from it.
"What. How did-" He paused when the butterfly fluttered around him.
"But. But." Marinette seemed speechless. She was holding a pencil jar devoid of pencils. Danny guessed she had intended to trap the butterfly. That didn't seem to go well given that she was staring at it in shock. "It's cleansed."
"Huh?"
"How did you do that?" Juleka asked in wonder.
"Do what?"
This was when the teacher stepped in. She realized how utterly confusing this was for the boy and decided to enlighten him. "The akuma is an evil butterfly sent by Hawkmoth, Danny. When it merges in an object of the victim, Hawkmoth manipulates them into accepting his deal to get Chat Noir and Ladybug's miraculouses. The superheroes defeat the victim by breaking the object the akuma was in, forcing it out. But it's still evil."
Alya interrupted. "Then Ladybug cleanses it from evil with her magic yoyo!"
Danny stared at them for a minute. He took a deep breath. "Alright ok. Magic yoyo, evil butterflies. Totally normal. Where's this Hawkmoth anyways."
Half the class shrugged.
"If we knew," Adrian said. "He would already be defeated."
Danny hummed. Then he glanced at Alya. "Are you recording all of this?"
She grinned and held up the phone straighter. "Of course I am. This is amazing."
Marinette shook her hands in frustration. "But how did you cleanse it just like that."
Danny shrugged. He had the feeling his ghost half had something to do with this but he couldn't tell them that. Suddenly that butterfly landed on his nose and his breath hitched. "Wait a second. I've seen this guy before."
"WHAT."
Danny nodded. "And that cold feeling. That's been going on for quite some time. I also kept having these weird thoughts about revenge and stuff. Must have been that crazy fruitloop." Danny sighed. "Crazy fruitloops just love to mess with my brain, don't they."
"Danny." Mylene looked like she was ready to burst into tears again. "Are you depressed?"
Danny didn't say anything, too much taken back by the random question. "What no!"
"Wait. What's that." Ivan pointed at something next to Danny's arm.
Danny lifted it and out flew a white butterfly. "What. But that was just." Danny turned to see the other butterfly too. There were two now. He slowly stood up and shook himself.
A flurry of white left his body.
Some butterflies had been hiding under his shirt and some were just flattened against his pant legs.
The class gasped as now four white butterflies flew around Danny.
"I thought those were one of those fake clips they sell," Nino muttered.
The teacher approached Danny cautiously. "Tell us the truth, Danny. Do you have depression?"
"No, I don't." Danny was getting frustrated that everyone kept treating him like some fragile thing. "Why would I."
"Those things are attracted by strong emotions. Mainly sadness or anger." Max murmured. "And you clearly don't have anger issues." The rest nodded.
Danny sucked in air through his teeth. Great now his class thought he had depression. "Doesn't the fact that I'm immune to Hawkmoth's evil butterflies justify that I don't have depression."
"No. It justifies that you have a strong will."
"I don't have depression ok. Maybe the dude just keeps getting frustrated that he can't get me and tried to use every chance he gets to get me to cooperate. I can get a bit angry or sad sometimes too alright."
Marinette nodded warily. "If that's true, then he will keep trying to target you."
Danny sighed. "I had hoped to not have to be in constant danger anymore after I moved."
Alix gasped, remembering something. She suddenly leaned forward, her eyes glittering. "You lived in Amity Park?!"
Danny nodded slowly.
"The ghost town???"
Danny nodded even more slowly.
"Wait what." Ivan questioned. "A ghost town?"
"Oh," Juleka exclaimed. "The ghost town is called Amity Park?"
Alix nodded furiously. "It's the most haunted town in the world. I'm surprised you guys didn't hear about it."
"I did!" Alya said excitedly. "I've heard it gets attacked by ghosts like twice a week."
Danny blinked. "How do you know this."
"Duhh." Alya rolled her eyes. "I do my research on teenage superheroes."
"Wait there's a hero there too?" Adrien asked.
Alya looked it up in her phone and showed them a pic of Danny's ghost form. "Look this is Danny Phantom. He's a ghost but he fights other ghosts that keep trying to attack the town."
Danny breathed a sigh of relief at not being called Invisobill.
Alya continued. "Some people say he's evil but that's stupid. Why would he fight off ghosts if he himself was evil." She glanced at Danny with an evil eye. "Do you think he's evil?"
Danny quickly put his hands up. "Of course not. Although there have been times when he robbed a few banks or threa-"
Alya interrupted him. "Those were accidents. I'm sure there's a perfect explanation."
Danny smiled. He started to like this girl more and more.
"Ghosts exist?" Mylene asked.
Danny nodded and leaned back, making the butterflies take off before they settled on him again. "Oh they exist, alright. And they're not blankets flying around shouting boooOOooh." He wiggled his fingers.
Alya nodded and showed them a pic of the Box Ghost, to which Danny held back a chuckle. "This is one of the frequent ghosts. They come from the Ghost Zone. That's another dimension where ghosts live. A company called the Fenton Works made a huge scientific break through and created a way to go into the Ghost Zone."
"A portal." Danny nodded, smiling at how excited she was about this.
The class were amazed and very intrigued.
Ivan turned to Danny. "Wait so you know that company?"
Danny pursed his lips. "Well I don't know if it can be called a company given that it only consists of two people but yes. Everyone in that town knows the Fentons."
"Really?" Alya gasped. "Do you know them personally? What are they like."
Danny laughed. "They're crazy, obsessed with ghosts, and geniuses at inventing ghost weapons, but not very good at trapping them. Especially the man. And yeah, I know them personally." He looked at them with a twinkle in his eye. "Do you know what my last name is?" He grinned. "Fenton."
Instant silence.
Alya exploded. "What!!"
Alix stared at him open mouthed. "So you're their nephew or something?"
"I'm their son." He laughed at their gobsmacked faces. "My name's Danny Fenton. Son of Maddie and Jack Fenton, most infamous ghost hunters in the world and I used to live in the most haunted town in the world. Nice to meet you." He tipped an imaginary hat.
"But but." Alya stuttered. "What are you doing here in Paris."
"My parents heard of the superheroes and villains here and were thinking about coming here and figure that out. Then we heard about a ghost and next thing I know we're packing. So here I am."
"Wow."
"Say Danny." Max asked, breaking the silence that had taken over the room as everyone digested this new information on their classmate. "Can ghosts take over someone else's body?"
Danny nodded.
"Has that happened to you before?"
Again he nodded to the surprise and horror of others.
"Maybe that's why you're immune to Hawkmoth's manipulation. You're basically used to it." Max wasn't very happy with his conclusion.
The rest couldn't believe their ears. Danny was almost always smiling. He had become a close friend to most of them and gradually they had noticed themselves feeling much more at ease with Danny around.
They had never expected someone from a ghost town to be anything like Danny. Maybe some more dark or Gothic. Or someone who actually looked like their house was haunted. But not Danny.
There was an awkward silence as Danny played with his butterflies absentmindedly. Then a thought struck him. "So you're telling me that I'm the only person to ever deny this birdguy a deal?"
Adrien pursed his lips. "We're not completely sure. There might be some people who had done it but we've never heard of it."
Danny hummed in thought.
Marinette bit her lip. "This may be dangerous." The class looked at her in confusion and she elaborated. "I mean. You're cleansing the akuma and absorbing it, who knows what kind of effects that could have on you."
Danny shrugged. "Who knows."
"So what are we gonna do about it."
"Nothing."
"What?!" Marinette scowled. "What do you mean nothing."
"I mean nothing. Look, this is my body. I know it's alright ok. It can't be that bad."
"Oh yeah?" Alix crossed her arms. "You were being pretty moody just now."
The others nodded and Danny groaned. "I was frustrated alright. Besides there was a guy shouting at me in my head. Quit worrying guys. Look at this more like a blessing than a curse."
His classmates weren't convinced.
"A blessing?" Ivan questioned.
"Yeah. If I can cleanse these things before they affect someone then no one will be turned into a villain."
"It's called akumatized."
Danny frowned. "You use the noun as a verb?"
"You're not the only one who Hawkmoth sends akumas to." Ivan warned.
Danny nodded. "If you guys feel really sad or angry or whatever emotion attracts these things you better call me. Alright? I'll be there as soon as I can."
Nobody in the room was sure about this arrangement but they agreed to it. After all, nobody wanted to be akumatized again. Sure they didn't remember anything about the fight but everyone else did. They wouldn't mean it but sometimes if they looked at a person, they would see the villain. There was always that threat that someone would become akumatized or that you would be Hawkmoth's next target. They wanted to feel safe.
And that's what Danny was giving them. Safety.
Yeahhh the people know and a new hero is born!!!
So what did you think
