Chapter 33

Darn it. I missed a week.

It was Monday the day after.

Danny had raced through the homework and thankfully the teacher didn't notice he was writing bullshit when she passed to check. Danny promised himself he'd make it properly later, but knew he had a knack at breaking promises to himself. He was eternally grateful he didn't need to turn in the homework like he used to in Amity Park, although that was something he could use to boost up his grade. Now, his whole grade counted on the tests.

That day passed on normally. Danny had to sit in the back of the class now, because his papis would disrupt the students, as the teachers put it. There were so many butterflies. But he didn't mind that at the moment. The teacher wouldn't notice if his eyes were directed to a random point of the whiteboard for a long time, himself to deep in his thoughts.

Finally he dropped down on his bed at home and groaned.

His phone buzzed, but he didn't feel like looking at it. Then his ringtone went off.

He moaned and snatched it up, blearingly looking at the contact. He clicked on 'answer'. "What's up."

"Hey-o!"

"Adrien?"

"Me and LB were wondering if you would join us and hang out."

Another voice piped in. Ladybug. "You know, just us swinging around buildings and pranking civilians. It'll be fun!"

Danny frowned, amused. "That will either end up with a ghost with millions of butterflies flying above Paris or Parisians having to see their heroes swing around an innocent civilian across the Eiffel Tower. Frankly, I'm not a fan of either of those."

Ladybug puffed some air in feigned disappointment. "Fine. We'll hang out on the Sacré-Cœure. You boring jerk."

Danny snorted. "Since when is hanging out on a famous church boring?"

Chat Noir probably rolled his eyes. "Since it's a normal Wednesday. When can we pick you up?"

Danny sighed, knowing he wasn't getting out of this one. Besides, he could use some more time with his friends. Back at school he'd been able to get out of his head more by talking to the others, but it had still been pretty muted. "Go ahead and come now, babe," he teased. "I'll change really quick so knock first."

Chat gave him a 'kay' before hanging up.

Danny put on a hoodie, because it was getting kind of chilly outside, and slipped on his sneakers.

He sat on his bed for a moment thinking about whether he should bring his phone with him but decided he didn't care about the rest of the world right now so he let it fall on the covers.

The boy opened his bedroom door and yelled down the hallway. "Mom! I'm going out with some friends!"

"Until what time?!"

"I don't know, but I'm not bringing my phone!"

"Ok, sweetie! Be careful! Be back before dinner or you'll have to eat it cold! Remember to not tuck your thumb in and go for the throat!"

"Sure, mom!"

The heroes had arrived and were tapping on his window. Danny opened the glass door next to it to step out on the balcony.

The two miraculous holders were grinning at him, obviously both in a good mood. Danny could already feel his own improving.

"Alright. Let's go. Chat, turn around," he instructed the boy, who rose his eyebrows but turned.

Danny hopped on his back, earning a small yelp from the cat. "I'm not letting her bugness carry me. She swings around way too much." He gave as an explanation.

Said girl giggled as held her yoyo ready. "Whoo. Should I be jealous?"

Chat had turned back around and winked at her. "Don't worry, my Lady. You're the only one for me in my eyes."

Ladybug's expression turned mischievous, though her cheeks were a bit pink under the mask. "I better be, kitty. Because I only swing one way: the cat's."

Danny and Chat blinked after the girl who threw her yoyo and jumped off the balcony.

Danny grinned. "Was that a pun?"

He felt Chat take a deep breath. "I'm so in love."

He patted the blonde's hair between the ears. "Come on, idiot. Your soulmate is getting away."

He could probably guess how red Adrien was. The hero mumbled under his breath as they jumped from the balcony.

The rest of the day was spent joking around and being silly. They used their powers for mundane things like messing with each other.

It was great.

Finally Adrien looked at his clock and gasped, scrambling up in a panic. "Oh man. I almost forgot! Dad wants me home soon." He grinned at them. "We're going out to dinner together!"

Marinette squealed and Danny waved goodbye at the excited boy as he sprinted away.

"I can't believe he's finally getting some time with his dad," she clasped her hands together. "It's about time."

Danny chuckled as he stretched. "I'm really happy for him." He sat down on the grass of the Park Square Louise Michel by the Sacré-Cœure. Marinette sat next to him.

Her and Adrien had removed their costumes some time ago. No use in spending their kwamis' energy on stupid things too much.

Danny looked over at the girl, who was looking out on the park with a big smile.

"I'm so happy I met him, Danny," she told him.

He gave her a small smile. "I know."

She exhaled and let herself plop on the grass. "Ohh. Life is good!" She glanced at him curiously. "How was your life as a superhero?"

Danny froze. He swallowed. "Well...it was. It was different."

Marinette sensed the mood change and propped herself up on her elbows. "Oh?"

Danny took a breath. She was letting him back out of it and say he didn't want to talk about it. But he did. He wanted someone to really understand him. She was a superhero too. Maybe she would get it a bit more than Sam or Tucker.

"I wasn't really seen as a hero at first," he began, choosing his words to get the meaning across. "That took them a couple of years. And it went up and down a lot, but by now most people think of me as a hero."

Marinette appeared offended. "Why didn't they at first?"

Danny sighed and leaned back on his arms. "Well, look. Amity has always been haunted as far as I know. The Ghost Zone, where the ghosts are born and live, is the flip dimension of Earth. The barrier between the two is very thin in Amity Park so natural portals form sometimes where ghosts can get through." He looked at her to see her staring at him, enraptured. "Ghosts who come to Earth usually do so to carry out their obsession. Those are usually either revenge, to set something straight, things like that." He scrunched his nose. "Not nice things. The minority just wanted to exist on Earth peacefully so no one heard about them at all."

"So, all everyone knew about ghosts was that they all did bad things and were villains," Marinette concluded and he nodded.

"Basically." He plopped down next to her. "So me appearing wasn't really a welcome with open arms."

"But why did you decide to be a vigilante? Aren't your parents ghost hunters? Can't they take care of it? How did they manage without you before?"

Danny gave a wry smile, not taking his eyes of the sky. "My parents are great inventors. They're geniuses. But if they ever even caught a ghost they wouldn't really know what to do with them. They had too many ideas for them. Most of which wouldn't have been pretty for the ghost. Apart from them, there was an organization called the Guys in White who, like my parents, were funded by the government. They were even worse than my parents. Everyone trusted them to take care of the ghosts that came and weren't fortunate enough to escape." He made a vague sound of anger. "They weren't very sceretive about their methods and plans for the ghosts."

Marinette looked horrified. She hung to his every word as if she was watching a horror movie, too afraid of what would happen next but peeping through the fingers. "What did they do?"

"Experimentation."

The word alone made her jump but Danny wasn't finished.

"Extermination. All that jazz. Let's just say they weren't happy when I appeared and stole all their prey. I just returned them to the Ghost Zone with a scolding." He sounded smug.

"They didn't catch you, did they?"

The boy turned his head. Her face was all scrunched up in concern and fear. He shook his head. "Nah. Their scans couldn't detect me when I changed to human so I was always able to get away."

She gave a big sigh of relief. "Wow." She plopped down next to him. "Sounds harsh. How did you get through it?"

"My friends, especially. They were there since the very beginning. They tried their best and covered for me and stuck by me no matter what. Even when I treated them unfairly." He laughed. "But also the small things like flying. I loved that. The people who did support me at the beginning. The ghosts I met in the Ghost Zone that helped me out sometimes. Honestly, the ghosts that attacked Amity weren't all that bad. They just...went about things the wrong way. At some point, it became more like playful banter between some of us. Of course there were some who really meant business and went big and wanted to hurt a lot of people, but they had their reasons."

Marinette laughed. "You sound oddly simpathetic for the people that punched you in a weekly basis."

Danny shrugged as much as he could lying down. "We had some weird relationships. Honestly, in the end, humans became my worse enemies."

She looked confused before her eyebrows rose up. "Guys in White."

"Them too. But there was also a guy who controlled ghosts to get what he wanted. And seriously, I have no idea what else he did all that for except for riches." He groaned. "At least ghosts have standards. And they have a reason to do the things they do. Important enough for them to have stayed behind for it. Now Hawkmoth, another human, is destroying a whole country for some selfish reason."

Marinette sighed. "Yeah. But humans are not all bad."

"I know. Ghosts are just easier."

"I can't say 'true', because I've never met a real ghost before but I'll take your word for it."

Danny frowned and looked at her. "You saying I'm not a real ghost? Is that what you're saying?"

"Well, are you?" She smirked.

The raven-haired boy huffed. "Whatever. You're not a real ladybug."

She gasped. "How dare you. You're in my home territory here. Have some respect."

He laughed, feeling so much lighter after he'd gotten at least that part of his story off his chest.

Soooooo
This is probably gonna be the last chapter before the final scenes, which are gonna take another ten or so chapters so don't sorry it's gonna get good.

If you haven't figured it out by now, Danny has a plan to take down Hawkmoth. And I'm curious. Do you know what it is?

I kinda hope you don't cuz then the surprise is all gone but I've left hints and lots of foreshadowing.

I just really want to know what you can get out of the context here. So fire away.

Chausitos.
