Chapter 30
Yas thirty chaps. It's probably gonna be till fifty or smth...
Danny hummed a tune to calm himself down as he tred through the streets. He had his headphones on so it could block out the sounds around him and he could concentrate on his core.
This was the third time since the kidnapping that he'd skipped class to walk around town.
Speaking of, when he'd gotten back everyone in school had tackled him like rugby players. It had been hours since he's been kidnapped at the time and it had had a lot of people worried. Half the school had found out and along with that his parents, who'd organized a search party for him in their panic. They had even been equiped with their new weapons meant for these supervillains, which they would gladly use if they could protect their boy. Danny could guess he didn't have his protective nature from thin air. What a shocker.
His parents had been so relieved to see him and asked him millions of times if he was ok. He'd told them he was fine and hadn't been hurt, of course. No need to flash his scars out when they were worried enough.
However, even after his reassurances, they continued to be awkward around him and ask him how he was feeling. He was almost sure it had also happened before the kidnapping but his memory was honestly a little shit so he assumed it hadn't.
The guy that had kidnapped him had looked for him the next day and apologized quickly before running away. Danny took it, though. He was happy enough the other had swallowed his pride and said sorry to him in public and up front.
Now, Hawkmoth didn't send anymore akumas to the school, which was a relief to both the students and the students' parents, but that didn't mean he didn't send any at all.
Danny had flown a bit farther away to the other side of the city to check if Hawkbutt had changed his perception towards this place. The boy had been paying more and more attention to his ghostly 'heart'. He was trying incredibly hard to widen his Papisense, as he called whatever he used to feel the close akumas.
All these senses were really saving his ass more than once. It was simultaneously his most loved and hated power.
He hummed to the song of Michael Jackson Beat It as he bounced down the sidewalk. He had a strange liking to 80's music, something his fellow peers couldn't understand.
Meanwhile, the thoughts flying around in his head were getting restless. That guy really had no sense of moral rights, did he.
Did that conversation they had had mean nothing? Did that guy even leave his probably underground lair? Did he ever?
Introvert villains were certainly a force to be reckoned with.
Finally something happened. Danny almost missed it because of his heated thoughts, but a little bell rang in his head. It shook him awake and made him whip his head around.
He startled a few pedestrians by taking off running. He skidded past a few blocks, letting pure instinct drive him. This proved to be a mistake when he was nearly hit by a car after he had ignored the red light of pedestrians and gone sprinting right into traffic. However, he made it to the other side and kept running.
Then he saw it. His vision had completely zoomed in on the small malevolent insect flapping towards a young man slouching against the wall and reading something on his phone with blank eyes.
Danny's hands immediately went to his pocket before he was reminded that his mom had thrown that jacket in the laundry and he had forgotten to stash pencils in this hoodie.
He looked around frantically and grabbed the first thing closest to his hand and threw it. He cursed when he realized that had been his headphones and desperately hoped it would miss. It didn't.
He stomped angrily past the man, who had looked up by now and was gaping at Danny. The raven snatched his precious music device from the ground and put it on, stomping his way to a street with relatively little people in it as he growled into the headset.
"What the actual heck, man?" He said with barely contained rage. "What the heck?!"
There was a sigh from the other end. "Hello to you too."
"What the heck??"
"Can we avoid this? Just break it already. Aren't you skipping school?"
"Oh no." Danny laughed angrily and with not a hint of humor. "I've been planning what I was going to say to you for weeks and you're not escaping my rant now so you better sit back because this is going to take awhile." He took a deep breath so he could actually be able to form sentences and not just curse words. "Are you fucking insane?!"
"I consider myself to be relatively san-"
"What was that back there, you dumbass??" He gestured wildly. "Did that talk we had mean nothing to you?! You just had to get me even more involved than you already have? And a kid?! Seriously! About his stupid girlfriend, something that happened months ago, might I add, and something that had been also your fault. What were you thinking, man? I seriously don't know. I can't understand you." He was stomping on the ground in frustration now. "Every time I've had to deal with these things before I could understand the others' point of view. It was still wrong but I KNEW why they were doing stuff. But with you.." he took a deep breath, "oh with you, I don't understand shit. What are you even doing, you idiot. What are you even trying to accomplish."
"Do you expect me to blurt out my plans just like that?"
"YES." Even Danny flinched at the loud tone. "It's basic villain morality. Get with the program, dude."
He could practically feel the eye roll. "Why would you want to know my plan? Just leave it alone and I won't bother you. Especially now that I know more about you."
The hidden threat was more than visible. "Oh yeah. Go ahead and blackmail a kid. Sure, whatever. How much do you even know about me. That I can light up? Wow. Who's gonna believe that, you absolute smartass."
There was a small hint of hesitance that had Danny smirking.
"I know more than you think."
That was a bluff. He was pretty sure of it. "Oh yeah? Like what. I'd like to see you take a guess."
"I know enough. Now will you just break the connection. I've got plans."
"I'm not done with you," Danny hissed. "Leave the citizens alone."
"Or what?"
"This is not a threat. It's a warning. I'll find you either way. But if you continue to go down this path, your downfall will only be much closer."
The man on the other side of the mask huffed, obviously unconvinced.
Danny crossed his arms and leaned against a wall, eyes strained to the floor and purple light lit up around his face. "Back to the purpose of this conversation. I thought we'd had a pretty menaingful talk a few weeks ago. What changed. Did you even follow my 'advice'? How's that guy you're doing all of this for doing? Is he fucking happy, Hawkmoth?" He mocked the name, like it was something the other should be ashamed of.
There was silence. Like there always was when that dude was mentioned. Then. "He is healthy and comfortable-"
"What are you, his doctor? How is he?" He asked again with a bit more emphasis.
"He's fine. It will get better."
Danny groaned and buried his face in his hands. He itched to grab the headphones and crack them against the cement. But something stopped him, there was a waver in the other's voice.
"Are you sure about that? Even if you do accomplish whatever you're trying to do, you'll have to work a lot to close the gap that has probably grown between you by now. You've been at this for a year and a half and I'm sure you didn't become a villain overnight. If you care so much for him, then look at what you're doing."
Danny sighed. "Do you mean as much to him as he does to you?"
"I-" he paused and Danny could almost feel emotion with their connection. "I- of course I do. I assume. Well I am his... I've been there since the beginning. It can't be as bad as you are insinuating."
Equations ran through Danny's head. Who was this guy? Who was he to Hawkmoth? "It only takes a second to break a connection and lose a bond. Given the right circumstances. And it has been almost two years."
It was silent. Danny was tired. He'd said his part. All he could do now was wait and see what the man did with it. "Talk to him," he advised, "Really talk to him. Not just about the weather, but about him...and you. Do it for him and yourself. You're losing it, man. Get him to get your life back on track."
He slipped his headphones off and slammed it against the wall, making it burst into pieces.
Immediately his Papis snuggled around him in a comfort blanket. They felt his tiredness and utter exhaustion that came from mental strain and tried to comfort him. Even the newbie that had just come out of his broken headphones, something he was gonna mourn for a long time.
"Hello."
Danny jumped from the sudden voice and blinked at the citizen that had approached him without him knowing. He looked around and realized there was a small crowd looking at him. "Hey." He blushed.
"You ok, man?" A teen asked as he held a phone.
Danny ran a hand through his hair in embarrassment as he realized he was being filmed. "Yeah I'm fine. Sorry for disrupting. I uh-" he had no idea what to say so he just pushed off of the wall and started walking back the way he came.
"Aren't you a bit far from your house?"
He tensed at the question a blonde woman in her forties asked him. "Uhhh."
"Do you have a way back?" She asked.
All the answer she need was a shy grin and a scuffling of his feet. "I don't have my car with me at the moment, but I could give you enough money to take the subway back."
Danny was surprised. "Really?"
"Of course, young man. I'm sure you spent everything on the ride here, didn't you?"
"Uh yeah sure. That- I miscalculated how far I'd have to go." He rubbed his arm. He'd never really been good with crowds. Especially not when they were being kind to him.
"That was a nice headset you had," a teenager slightly older than Danny seemed to mourn it as much as him as he came closer. Danny let him inspect it.
"Aww. It was Bluetooth. Although it's not one of the better kind. I'll get you a new one. Come on." He grabbed Danny's hand and ignored his sputtering as he and some other pedestrians dragged him off to stores and excitetly showed him different kinds of headphones and their qualities.
The blond woman gave him some money and left with a smile and a thank you. A few others from the crowd followed Danny around, trying to chat with him and filming him and his interactions with others and sometimes asking for selfies.
Danny wasn't sure what to think about all this. He usually didn't like crowds of fans, but this was tolerable. They weren't pushing him too much and were being nice for the most part so he went with it as they had him put on a headset and critisized the style and colors on him and advised another one. He went with it as they took pictures and he made sure to make silly faces in each. He went with it as they showed him their white Papi clips on their backpack or car keys. He went with it as one of the adults (as most of them were except for the ones who were already in college or were skipping class like him) payed for a headphone and they cheered as he hanged it around his neck.
He thanked them dearly and they returned the favor several times.
Finally, Danny stepped in the subway and waved at the small amount of people that had stuck with him the rest of the day. He let himself plop down with a smile.
This day hadn't turned out so bad.
Omgoshhhh
I didn't mean that last part to happen.
I'm just a sucker for fluff.
I'll leave now and continue my studying. There's still a lot I have to do, but thanks for everyone's input and encouragement.
No tengo ganas de dejar un mensaje grande así que chau. Nos vemos. Y que piensan de este capítulo?
