Chapter 24
The reason I'm so late is because I was starting to get sucked in the Voltron fandom, but Im fighting back and that's why I'm still here.
The reason I sometimes visit the vld fandom even though it's so toxic is to water my plance and because of Lance and Hunk's purest bromance.
Just be mad at me. I'm mad at me and I don't wanna be alone.
Kidnapper and kidnapped turned to see a red streak land on the ground with a crouch. Glass splinters from the broken window littered around her.
Danny brightened immediately. "Ladybug!"
Her eyes searched the theatre until they landed on him and she smiled in relief. Then her expression hardened when she caught sight of the akuma right next to him.
Danny's attention had already shifted towards the glowing lights flying over towards him. "My girls!!" He laughed as they beelined right towards him and clung to him as if trying to physically show him how much they had missed him. "How did you find me?!" He paused as he realized they couldn't talk and decided to ask Marinette later. Or maybe Alya. She knew more about butterflies and their habits.
Right now, however, he shifted around in his seat, trying to get free.
Suddenly something rose right next to him, making Danny jump before he spotted the fanged smirk and realized who it was. He huffed. "Geez, Catwoman. Don't sneak up on me like that."
Chat Noir chuckled and leapt forward to try to get him out of the chair. Danny glanced back at Ladybug to see her trying to catch Voidness with her yoyo. It seemed incredibly difficult with how he constantly disappeared in the shadows.
His eyes widened a bit when he caught sight of a glint coming from Chat's claws. "Hey dude. Don't scratch me. This is all basically air so don't like....try to rip it open, you know?"
Chat narrowed his eyes in thought. "Then how am I supposed to get you-"He was interrupted by the shadows around Danny shifting and lash out, punching the cat in the face and making him stumble backwards.
He yelped and scrambled up, crouching to eye the akuma, who seemed a bit frustrated. "Get out, heroes," he spat. "This is between me, Mothman and him."
The said heroes looked taken back by the obvious dismiss of the mircaulouses, but recovered quickly when something just as valuable to them was threatened instead.
Chat flew forward to scratch him. "Well, tell Hawmoth that kidnapping children is off limits." He ignored the indignant shout from behind him and tackled the akuma. Only for it to dissolve and make him tumble to the ground.
Ladybug had, meanwhile, tried to succeed in where Chat Noir had failed. She wrapped Danny with her yoyo and yanked. The only thing she got out of that was a pained yelp from the boy and a slight shift of the seat before it was nailed back to the ground. She huffed and let him go. "Don't worry, Danny. We'll get you out of here."
"Yeah, that would be nice." He smiled. "Although, the dark never bothered me anyways."
Ladybug ignored that (as she always did) and tugged on the seat, trying to separate Danny from it.
They both looked up when they heard a shout and saw Chat get flunged into a giant music box on the ceiling.
Danny winced. "Nevermind me. Get the guy. He looks shady." He smirked at her as she sighed.
"Alright. You try and find a way to get out on your own." She swung her yoyo and went feet first into the Akuma, actually being able to catch it off guard.
Danny wriggled in his bonds. It was no use. He couldn't move an inch. Then he felt something by elbow give before it was bound again. He looked at it desperately and noticed the butterfly that was standing on it. His eyes widened. Right under the little feet of his Papi, he could see his skin. Right where it glowed.
He would have smacked himself, but he settled for an excited grin. Of course! You can't touch a shadow, but you can drive it away.
He opted for staying very still and coaxing the butterflies to settle on him. However, as many they were, they couldn't cover every single inch of him. And every light created a shadow to hold him down. Strapped tight against the seat.
Danny was starting to give up hope when a crash sounded from where the supers were fighting the brainwashed villain.
He glanced up and his eyes widened at the sight of Marinette in costume being held by the throat a few meters in the air. She struggled fruitlessly, but was trapped tight in the shadows and it was getting increasingly hard to breathe.
Chat Noir wasn't much better either. He did have the advantage of being able to mostly see in the dark, but there was nothing to fight the Akuma with and as a result he was going down on the ground. The Akuma crouched by the cat who was fighting to scratch something that wasn't tangible.
Danny sucked in some breath when a mask appeared around the Akuma's indecisive eyes. He smirked and reached out towards Chat's hand.
Danny clenched his teeth. He did not want that thing to touch his pun partner, the buddy he'd only met once, the shameless furry that sprang all around Paris saving lives.
Nope! That dude better stay away from his friends.
The Akuma frowned and turned around towards Danny. He looked shocked and only then did Danny find out his eyes were glowing green.
The shadows can't touch where the light glows, Danny mused. They can't touch me when I glow.
The sight of his friends being held against their will and hurt was all that he saw. He'd been fighting on not doing anything the whole time, holding on to the hope that they could handle themselves.
It was no use. They couldn't fight something that couldn't be touched. Danny had to help. He could. And he could fight fire with fire.
As Ladybug made a strangled sound of protest, a bright light enveloped Danny, chasing the shadows around him away. When it dimmed a different Danny sat on the metal seat in the corner of a theatre. A glowing Danny.
The Akuma stared open mouthed as Danny smirked and stood up, his eyes shining with mischief. "Time to light up the party."
He took off from the ground and barreled straight at the akumanazised person, who was too busy staring at him in utter shock and confusion to dodge the fist that hit him smack on his cheek. "I don't know much about villain morals, but I'd say animal abuse is a big no no."
Danny looked down at Chat a bit nervously. The cat hadn't moved an inch and was staring at him with wide glowing eyes. "Umm hey dude. Are you ok?"
"Are you a zombie?!" Chat Noir exclaimed.
Danny pulled him up by the paw. "I wouldn't think about it too much if I were you." He looked at the villain who was holding his hair tight as the mask around him shined stronger. Ladybug had been able to escape when the Akuma went into shock and was making her way over to them.
"Look." Danny faced Chat again. "Can we save the existential crisis for after we save that guy?"
"Yeah yeah. Sure right. Let's...let's spook him." He said, trying to joke his shock and surprise away.
Danny grinned. There was a lot he didn't understand about that cat, but that coping mechanism hit him spot on. "You got it. Now stop looking like you've seen a ghost and put your battle face on. It's haunting time."
Marinette landed by them and looked as if she wanted to strangle Danny, but she resorted to smililng gratefully. "Thanks for rescuing my kitty." She ignored Chat's overdramatic gasp and jerked her head towards the akuma. "Give us a hand?"
"Of course, your bugness." He lit his hand up and started floating, much to Chat's shock. "I'll blast him. You get the akuma."
Ladybug nodded with a frown and Chat stuttered out an 'ok'. Danny smirked and sprang forward, catching the Akuma off guard.
As he blasted away at the scrambling Akuma, Danny couldn't help but think of the song Burn by Ellie Goulding.
Chat was having more success with getting more hits and scratches in thanks to Danny cornering Voidness into the Cat's claws. Although Danny was having a hard time in keeping his butterflies safe. They kept latching on to him and getting in the way and almost getting hit. He grimaced and scooped most of them up in a shield and let it float out of range. "Sorry," he whispered and went back into the fight.
Ladybug could do nothing more than chase him around and try to wrap him up and take the object with the akuma before he dissolved away.
"And we're gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn," Danny mumbled as he threw ectoblast after ectoblast, unconsciously falling into the rhythm. He did a few loops in the air to dodge a 'shadow punch' (as he called the attacks). "We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn. We gonna-"
He was cut off by a flying piano that caught him right into his stomach and slammed him into a wall, not without knocking off a few chairs and some music equipment first. He groaned and berated himself for falling into a pattern. "Unpredictability is key, Fenton," he mumbled as he stood up. "This is why Sam banned you from wearing headphones during fights."
"Can you move?" Ladybug asked in concern as she dropped in front of him without turning her back to the Akuma. He grunted in response.
"I'm fine." He stood up and stretched. "Just been a long time since I got into a fight like this. How do you usually beat these things?"
"Not by being thrown around," Ladybug grumbled. "We have some tricks up our sleeves. We just need a plan to use them wisely." Her eyes searched the room, landing on different key points as she took on a calculated expression.
Danny was reminded of that one meme. He could almost see the equations floating around her head.
"And I got the perfect plan." She smirked. "Danny, just keep doing what you were doing. Keep him distracted and away from Chat." She swung out, leaving Danny to wonder what she had in mind. However, now was time for action.
He ignored his sore back and scratched up arms and leapt forward with two glowing blasts in his hands. "Heya Voidness. You should go see a doctor. You look very light-headed." He blasted the guy away, who looked at him with fury in his eyes.
"Whatever you are, you're the most annoying person I have ever met." The dude growled and threw a shadow punch.
Danny shrugged as he dodged. "It's a talent I've had plenty of chances to nurture." As he talked he noticed Chat Noir shouting something he couldn't quite catch. Not because he was so far away, but because the word was so ridiculous he was sure he'd heard wrong.
Chat seemed to do a little dance that had Danny a bit freaked out, but he was soon shaken out of his thoughts when something grazed past his side and had him spinning in the air. He righted himself right on time to see the Akuma swing another chair at him.
Since he couldn't be touched by shadows, the amunasized person had resorted to chucking things at him.
Smart.
Danny blasted the chair mid air and swooped in for a swing. "Baby, you light up my world like nobody- Ugh!" He missed when the other boy disappeared and left him flying around in circles to find him.
Chat was meanwhile leaping around, leaving a cloud of dust behind him that Ladybug would scatter with her yoyo.
Danny didn't even have the time to raise an eyebrow when the Akuma appeared again. The ghost boy had a job to do and that was to distract the villain. He didn't want to be on the other end of the 'you had one job' saying.
So as he hummed "shine bright like a diamond" aggressively under his breath, he sent a volley of shots. A few of which actually landed and had the villain crying out.
Finally, when the two Paris heroes where done with whatever they had been doing Ladybug shouted at Danny.
She waved her arms and said: "Trap him!" Just as Chat Noir screamed: "Light 'em up!"
Danny decided to go with both and plopped a glowing shield right on top of the man. He didn't know how it would help given that there plenty of objects that would create a shadow. Well, there were.
Now he understood Marinette's plan. Chat had somehow turned all that could make a shadow into dust so Danny's light could cover everything in the room and the Akuma had no way of escaping.
Ladybug didn't waste time in wrapping him up in her yoyo, but didn't approach. Danny didn't know how the yoyo had fazed right through his shield, but he assumed it was just a ghost thing.
"Get his gloves!" She urged Danny.
He nodded, knowing he was the only one that didn't create a shadow. He fazed through the shield and grabbed the struggling Akuma's hands. "Gimme that," he scolded the boy as he slipped the gloves off of the clenched fists.
"What now?" Danny glanced at Ladybug questioningly. "Do I just...?"
"It's the same as when he tries to get you!" She responded.
Danny scrunched his eyebrows. "But that's before it transforms someone. Now it's already transformed. Wouldn't it hurt the alkumana-" he trailed off, mumbling something with a frustrated scowl.
"Just rip them apart!" Chat emphasized this by showing him how to do it with his hands. As if he was tearing a paper.
Danny rolled his eyes, but his eyebrows scrunched as he looked the objects over. "This is cloth. It's tough. I can't just-"
"Then burn it. Whatever. Just destroy it."
"Ok ok." Danny looked back at the scared Aluma. Staring right into Hawkmoth's soul through the wide eyes of the boy. "This conversation ain't over, Hawkmoth," he growled and disintegrated the fingerless gloves in his hands.
A shiver passed through his spine and he gasped, stumbling backwards, as he trembled a bit. This was way more intense than when he destroyed his own stuff.
He hadn't realized he'd dropped the shield until the two heroes were next to him, asking him if he was ok.
"Yeah yeah." He looked up right on time to see black goop envelop the dude before him. He panicked for a second before it dissolved to make way for the crouching boy from school. The dude looked up with wide eyes and scrambled away from the heroes in jumpsuits around him. "What where?"
Danny couldn't help but laugh, relieved they'd won.
Unfortunately that just got the attention of the boy. He stared at him with frightened eyes. "Who the heck are you?!"
Danny held his hands up. "Calm down, dude. It's ok. Sorry for scaring you. Deep breaths ok? What's your name?"
The guy took a couple of deep breaths and finally said through clenched teeth. "Louis."
"Alright, Louis. My name is Phantom. Here. Let me help you up." He stretched out a hand, which Louis took, and pulled him up, making sure to steady him.
"Come on. Let's get out of this place, alright?" He supported him as he led the boy out of the theater, winking at Ladybug and Chat Noir as he left. 'Be right back,' he mouthed.
Marinette was looking at him with a fond smile, whereas Chat seemed curious.
Danny kept talking as they walked out into the warmth of the sunlight. He let the boy look around and try to reorient himself. He checked himself over and finally realization seemed to wash over him. "I- I was akumatized wasn't I?"
Danny didn't let his wince show and nodded solemnly, letting the information settle.
Louis sighed, sounding defeated and like he was two seconds from bursting out crying. "What did I do?"
Danny smiled. "What do you remember?"
"I was with Raphael. We were looking through the videos on the Ladyblog and I remembered when my girlfriend was akumatized. She was broken after and I couldn't help her. I'm not good with people. I just- I just don't know what to do. Oh no." His eyes widened and he froze. "Garcon Papillon. Is he-?"
"He's fine." Danny put a hand on the boy's shoulder, knowing it send a chilling sensation and would shake the teen from any thoughts. "Ladybug and Chat Noir wouldn't let anything happen." Even though he knew he would hear about the kidnapping later, Danny left that out for now. "Look, I know it's scary, being mind controlled. Although my experience was slightly different."
It was. Danny had been there when Freakshow had brainwashed him. He hadn't been shoved back into his mind. He had been forced into acting and thinking differently. His morals had been messed with, which just messed with his brain even more after he broke out of the control and realized all he had done. Danny could only thank the stars none of these kids had to go through that.
"Just remember that whatever you did and whatever happened to you wasn't your fault. It wasn't you, alright? Would you have attacked kids if you weren't even aku- mind controlled?"
Louis winced. "Maybe-"
"No." Danny corrected him firmly. "You didn't. You wouldn't have. You still haven't. Because Voidness wasn't you. So let's forget about that, ok?"
Louis nodded and they stayed silent for a moment before a slow grin slipped on the boy's face. "My villain name was Voidness?" He asked incredulously.
Danny laughed as he clapped the taller boy's back. "You can bet it was."
"Man that's so emo."
The two laughed merrily.
"You know," Louis choked out. "I actually had a list of villain names I wanted to use for when I'd become one. I'm disappointed I didn't use one of those." He sighed. "Being a villain is so much scarier than I thought it would be."
Danny was sad that he had used the word 'when' and not 'if'. He was so going to have that talk with Hawkmoth. He slipped an easy grin on his face. "Well. Let me tell you. You gave me a good name to insult Hawkmoth with. You called him Mothman."
Louis gave a shocked laugh. "I was insulting him while under his control?"
"Yep. Best villain I've yet to fight. It was hilarious, my friend."
The other boy paused. "Wait a second. Who are you again?"
Danny sobered up a bit, suddenly aware of the cleansed butterfly he'd gotten from the boy in front of him. The Papillon was perched on his back thankfully. "I'm Phantom. I'm a ghost from Amity Park. I actually gotta go back so..." He floated up.
"Ghosts exist??"
Danny couldn't help but laugh again. "You've just been mindcontrolled by a Fruitloop's gothy butterfly and you're surprised that ghosts exist." He waved. "You know how to get home from here right?"
Louis nodded. "But I got school."
"I'm sure they'll let you of with a warning," Danny said sarcastically before flying away. "Take care, Louis."
He disappeared from sight as he went back into the theatre.
