Chapter Four
For the second time that week, Charlotte Ramsey approached the Leaky Cauldron. However, instead of being surrounded by her large family, she was only accompanied by her mother. Charlotte was going to buy her school supplies and meet up with Teddy, and Caroline Ramsey was attending a book club at one of the small bookstores lining Diagon Alley.
"Charlotte, be careful okay?" Her mother gazed at her with soft eyes as Charlotte stepped through the brick archway into Diagon Alley.
"I will be, Mum." Charlotte took a breath and inhaled deeply. She loved the feeling of Diagon Alley. It felt so alive, so full of light and joy. "Love you!" Charlotte waved goodbye to her mother and bounced off to Flourish and Blotts, the predesignated spot where she was meeting Teddy. She couldn't wait to see him.
"Lotte!" Charlotte snapped her head to where she heard the sound of her voice being called. It was the one and only Teddy Lupin yelling her name.
Charlotte waved to him before walking in his direction. She decided not to mention what had happened that night at the concert. They had both had too much fire whiskey, and who knew if Teddy even remembers that she said that. Charlotte shook her head before directing a smile at Teddy. "Teddy! How are you?"
When Teddy reached Charlotte he quickly hugged her. "I'm good, Lotte. How are you?"
Charlotte blushed slightly, her cheeks turning a light pink. "I'm good. Are you ready to get your school supplies?" She questioned.
"I'm ready. Remind me again which subjects you are taking for your N.E.W.T.S. again?" Teddy asked Charlotte, not noticing the blush spread across her face.
"Defense Against The Dark Arts, Potion, Transfiguration, Charms, Herbology," Charlotte paused. "And Ancient Runes!"
Teddy smiled at her. "That's a lot. I'm taking Defense Against The Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Herbology, Potions, and Charms. We will have a ton of classes together!"
Charlotte laughed. "Yes, we will!" She took a once over of Teddy's outfit before continuing. "While we are here, we need to get you some respectable clothing. If you are going to be Head Boy, you cannot wear that." That referred to Teddy's old, worn jeans and Chudley Cannons t-shirt. "Not that I don't love that outfit."
Charlotte's laughter echoed in Teddy's ears, making him smile. "My dad said the same thing." He muttered.
Charlotte's smile only grew. "Your dad is a smart man. Now come on!" Charlotte grabbed Teddy's hand and pulled him off into Flourish and Blotts.
"I'm coming, I'm coming!" Teddy joined in on Charlotte's laughter.
The bell tinkled when they pushed open the door to the book shop. It was mostly empty, with only a few students and parents buying schoolbooks. "Welcome. What can I help you with?" A tired voice said from the back of the shop.
Charlotte and Teddy navigated their way through the piles and towers of books to reach the man who had spoken. They both placed their book supplies lists on his desk. "We need these books please," Charlotte said politely.
"Hm..." The man dived under the desk and came out with a large stack. "Here you are. There is a double copy of every book that you need in this stack, except the Ancient Runes textbook. Now, that, I have to go find it. Please excuse me." He slid out from his desk and hurried back into another room, this one just as cluttered with books as the first.
"Not many people take Ancient Runes at N.E.W.T level," Charlotte whispered to Teddy as they waited for the man to come back. She leaned her weight against him, pressing her head into his chest. Teddy wrapped an arm around the girl and smiled down at her.
"Ah! Here it is!" The two jumped apart when they heard the shout from the back room. The man came running back, clutching an Ancient Runes textbook. He repeated what Charlotte had told Teddy about not many people taking Ancient Runes at N.E.W.T. level before adding the book to the stack of books. "That'll be 90 Galleons for you," He nodded at Charlotte. "And 80 Galleons for you." The man nodded at Teddy. They passed the Galleons over to him before exiting the shop, laden down with their books.
"Teddy, I think that it's time for an ice cream break!" Charlotte walked along Diagon Alley towards Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour. The parlour had been reopened after the war and was now being run by Flora Fortescue.
"Lotte, I agree," Teddy said before linking arms with Charlotte. Their bags of books clacked together as they walked, which only caused the pair to laugh.
When they reached the parlour, Teddy ordered chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Charlotte ordered Raspberry Rose, which was spelled so that when you took a bite, a rose unfurled upon your tongue.
Teddy watched Charlotte from across the table. Light was spilling onto her skin, making it glow. He watched her giggle and laugh as a reaction to her ice cream. She's so beautiful. Love is a beautiful thing.
Teddy was jolted out of his thoughts by Charlotte's voice. "Teddy, I want to say thank you again for going to the concert with me." Charlotte licked her spoon and grinned at him.
Teddy's hair turned slightly pink and he smiled back at Charlotte. "It was no problem. I had a lot of fun!" He wondered if she remembered what she had told him. Little did he know, Charlotte was thinking almost the same thing.
"I'm glad that you did! Are you finished?" Charlotte picked up their bowls and put them in the designated area. "We need to get you something to make you look presentable if you are going to be Head Boy. As your fabulous Head Girl," She paused to flip her hair over her shoulder dramatically. "My Head Boy needs to look equally as fabulous as I do." The pair dissolved into laughter as soon as Charlotte finished last her sentence.
"Are you saying that I don't look fabulous?" Teddy scoffed and pretended to be offended.
Charlotte reached over and ruffled Teddy's blue hair. "You look fabulous, just not in the right way." She scrutinized his orange shirt that clashed beautifully with his hair. "Right now, you look like you rolled out of bed and put on the first shirt that you saw."
"To tell you the truth, I did do that." He winked at Charlotte, grinning. "And what kind of fabulous do you look like?"
"I look like I actually spent time this morning getting ready." Charlotte grinned back at Teddy, throwing her head back as she laughed.
Flora Fortescue walked up to the pair and smiled warmly at them. "Teddy, Charlotte! It's so good to see you! How is the ice cream?" Flora had been a few years above them in school and had been a Hufflepuff, so both Teddy and Charlotte knew her.
"It's good to see you too, Flora! The ice cream is fantastic!" Charlotte beamed.
"I'm glad to hear that." Flora paused before continuing. "So, how long have you two been together?"
Teddy and Charlotte both spluttered before trying to explain to Flora.
"We're not-"
"We aren't-"
Finally, Charlotte calmed down enough to string together a full sentence. "We aren't a couple." Teddy nodded vigorously, agreeing. His hair was a bubblegum pink color, and Charlotte's cheeks and ears were almost the same shade.
"Oops! My bad!" Flora giggled. When she was still at Hogwarts, Flora could be counted on to know all the gossip at the school. "You two would make a great couple!" She called as she walked away.
Charlotte turned to Teddy, still blushing. "So, why don't we go get you those dress robes?"
"Yeah, that sounds good," Teddy said faintly. His hair was still a vibrant pink.
Charlotte grabbed Teddy's hand and pulled him out of his seat. "Come on!" She led him to a small dress shop.
"Really?" Teddy said skeptically, staring at the display window. It contained a particularly garish set of orange and hot pink robes, complete with bright blue trim.
"I promise that the other robes are better than that." Charlotte laughed, the momentary awkwardness from the ice cream parlour already forgotten in Charlotte's mind. "My mother swears by this place. She always recommends it when people ask her where to buy good dress robes from. The owner is really nice too! I've been a couple of times with my mum. You know my blue dress robes?" Teddy nodded. He liked those robes. "They were from here."
"If those have any reflection upon this shop's skill, then I'm sure that we will find something for me here." Teddy pushed open the door of the shop, the bell above making a bright tinkling sound.
"Welcome!" Someone called from behind a mannequin that displayed a stunningly beautiful pair of robes. "I'll be right with you!"
"Hi, Ellune!" Charlotte called out to the woman, who immediately popped her head out from behind the mannequin.
"Charlotte! It's so good to see you! And whose this that you've brought with you?" Ellune pushed her glasses up her nose and peered at Teddy.
"Ellune, meet Teddy Lupin. Teddy, meet Ellune Ellis, the owner of Ellis' Electic Robes." Charlotte dropped Teddy's hand so he could shake Ellune's offered one.
"It's nice to meet you, ma'am." Teddy said politely.
"Oh, don't call me ma'am. Makes me feel old." Ellune laughed. "But I am old. It's nice to meet you too Teddy. Now what are you looking for today Charlotte?"
"Teddy here needs new dress robes. His are practically falling apart." Charlotte told Ellune, who was looking around the shop.
"I have the perfect thing! Wait here." Ellune said excitedly. The elderly woman ran to the back room of the shop, leaving Teddy and Charlotte alone.
Charlotte leaned her head on Teddy's shoulder. "Ellune is great, isn't she?"
Teddy agreed with Charlotte with a nod. He was too focused on her head on his shoulder to say anything. If he did try to speak, his words would most likely come out as gibberish.
"Here it is!" Ellune came sweeping back into the room. In her hands she cradled a magnificent set of robes. She threw them at Teddy, who hastily caught them.
"Those Quidditch reflexes come in handy, don't they?" Charlotte teased Teddy as he pulled the robes on.
"What do you think?" Teddy asked Charlotte, turning toward her.
Charlotte's breath caught in her throat. The blue of the robes matched Teddy's turquoise hair perfectly, and they fit him spectacularly. He looked so good. "Ellune, he's buying them. No question."
Charlotte didn't let Teddy look in the mirror, instead making him trust her judgment. Which he did. The pair purchased the robes and then bought the rest of their school supplies. The trip to Diagon Alley had been full of laughter and happiness, which both Charlotte and Teddy hoped was an indication of the year to come.
