Chapter 1- A Bloody Fence
After going downstairs, I couldn't help myself. I had vertigo. I wanted to dance until my legs ached, and I did. It was fun, but I got tired and passed out on a couch. Then the sun started rising and Eliza woke me up because I had to go home. Matt invited me over again, but I had to think about it. It was actually pretty good, but I am not the kind of person that parties all the time.
I left and sneaked in my room from the window. I changed in my pajamas and was asleep the moment my head touched the pillow.
It was a dreamless sleep, which lasted for three hours. At nine o'clock my uncle came in and woke me up.
"You look like a mess!" He says. I must have black circles under my eyes.
"I didn't sleep well..." I tell him.
"Okay then. You'd better hurry up now or there will be no muffins left."
"Right!" I jump out of bed and get ready.
I put on a, very long black skirt, a short sleeved white shirt, black sandals and my mom's necklace.
After that, I went outside.
Once a month, Mrs Jackie made clothes that were more like the ones people wear nowadays, so after getting my beloved muffins from the bakery, I went by to see what was new.
"These things. They call them hoodies, I have a few." She tells me. "They have been around for years now, but they wear them a lot recently."
"Looks good. I will take two and a pair of jeans." I give her her money, take the clothes and leave. What? I decided I was going to wear pants more.
As I (repeatedly) told you, things here are simple and a hoodie seemed simple enough.
I walked in my house and left my stuff on the bed. Then I took my muffins and went at the kitchen to eat them.
Then there was a knock on the door. I went and opened it to find Matt at my doorstep.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I ask indifferently.
"So welcoming..." He says his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I came to invite you to come with us at the cliffs."
"Me? At the cliffs?" Well, he obviously didn't know the whole story. I avoided that place like the plague.
"Well, not dressed like that. Are you coming?" I pondered on that for a minute.
"Sure." I say, without even knowing why. I am so going to regret this. "Wait, I am going to get dressed."
I put on one of my new hoodies. I like it, not my fault. I put on my jeans, a pair of sneakers and leave my mom's necklace on.
Five minutes later I returned at the front door and got out. Matt was there with Sylvia, Eliza and the Dayson twins.
"So, are we going to the south cliffs or..?" I ask.
"The south cliffs are illegal to go to, so we are going there." Matt replies. Well, of course we are going to the only restricted area of our island!
"If we get arrested--" I start, but one of the twins interrupts me.
"We never do. The cops aren't agile enough to follow us down."
"Wait, down? We are climbing down, the cliffs?" I ask wide eyed.
"Yeah, why? Are you afraid of heights?" The other twin asks.
"No, just..."
"Can we quit the small talk and just go already? I am getting bored." Sylvia interrupts the conversation.
"Fine." I grumble and we take off. I just hope we take the highway up there...
~*~
We didn't take the highway. We climbed. At least I didn't fall. Thank goodness for free time... What? I am bored a lot. I don't climb the cliffs, but I climb at the roof. Not much of a difference, right?
Only once, I saw a bee and nearly lost my grip, but I didn't fall. The others nearly fell off laughing at my yelp.
Idiots.
After an hour of climbing without any equipment, we arrived and I was exhausted. It usually takes them around twenty minutes to arrive, but they had me with them and I am a rookie. Which means there will be more of that.
They said I was a fast learner. I took it as a compliment.
"So... you do this thing... every day..." I tell them panting.
"Yeah." Eliza laughs.
"I really regret not wearing a t-shirt..." I chuckle.
"We need to get moving." Sylvia says. This girl really doesn't like me.
We kept moving until we reached a metal fence.
"We can't go further. This thing will electrocute us of we try to get inside by climbing. We have been trying to find a way to shut it down, but we can't." Matt says.
"Yeah... It doesn't kill you or anything but it takes a lot of time to get your hair back to normal again." Eliza adds. I stare at her.
"So you come here every day and try to get through the fence? What if there's nothing beyond it?" I ask.
"Would they put such a fence if there was nothing beyond?" Matt replies.
"Good point. And if this is here for our safety?" I ask again.
"They would tell us if something dangerous was there." Sylvia replies.
"Okay..." I sigh. "And you have looked all around?"
"Yep." They all say in unison.
"What if you waited until someone gets in so you can see how they do it?" I ask.
"They look around first and there aren't any good places to hide near. There are those trees, but it is the first place they go looking for intruders." one of the twins says.
"I need to think about it." I say and sirens are heard in the distance.
"No time for that now!" Matt says and everyone starts climbing down the cliff. I followed them.
We climbed down faster than we climbed up. Probably because there were cops chasing us.
I am starting to get used to this and that worries me.
We land down and start running. The cops nearby seem to understand what's going on and come after us.
"What now, genius?" I ask Matt.
"Uh... In the Party House." He replies.
"But it is far from here! We won't make it!"
"Do you have any other ideas, Parker?"
"That alley! There's a fire exit, we can get on the roof and hide there!" I tell him. He grunts at my outsmarting him, but we all run that way anyway.
We quickly climbed the stairs to the roof and ducked.
After a while I sat up and looked down.
"They're gone." I tell the others and they stand up.
"That was close..." Eliza says.
"Yeah, Matt. She saved our butts." one of the twins replies and Matt glares at me. Dammit.
"So... What now?" the other twin asks. I need to find a way to tell those two apart.
"We go to the Party House to get stuff ready." Matt replies and we nod. Looks like that I made myself some friends.
The strangest thing isn't the fact that I have friends, but who my new friends are and how we started hanging out. I wasn't expecting to start hanging out with the leader of the Party House and his best friends by spilling coffee on him, slapping him and ending up in jail with him.
My life is weird.
We arrived at the House half an hour later. How do these guys manage to run all day and party all night? Do they even study?
~*~
We were cleaning up last night's mess, and putting the "secret" passages back to their places.
Those passages were so many I couldn't help but wonder how they could remember them all.
By the time we were done, it was nearly nightfall. We all collapsed on the couch. I rolled up my sleeves.
"How the hell do you manage?" I ask them.
"It has become a bloody habit..." Matt replies.
"Dammit..." I pant. "Never thought this kind of thing would be tiring..."
"This kind of thing?" Matt asks.
"Yeah, running the Party House." I reply. He shakes his head. "What?"
"You say it as if it is a bad thing."
"No, I'm not!" I protest.
"Yeah, right." He scoffs and leaves. What was that about?
"What's wrong with him? Did I say something wrong?" I ask the others.
"No, girl. I am weirded out he didn't snap. He has been like this for a month now. The House has started stressing him out." Eliza says and I nod.
"Yeah, a week ago he beat up a guy that told him he was getting bored of the place, right Chase?" Jace asks.
"No, Jace. That was in your dream about hot dogs last night." Chase replies.
"I need some air." I tell them and go outside.
I go sit cross legged at the beach, sigh and start playing with the sand. This always calms my nerves.
These guys are trying to be nice at me and I actually have some friends, but I can't help but worry I will let them down. I always let people down.
Then I sense someone sitting down next to me. I look up and see Matt. Great.
"Sorry about before. I am just stressed and all." He says.
"It's not your fault. I don't think before opening my mouth." I tell him.
"Do you ever wish you weren't on this island?" Well, that was random.
"Uh... Sometimes. Bad memories." I sigh.
"What kind of bad memories would you have?" Before I can reply Eliza comes outside.
"Time to turn on the music, people have started arriving." She says.
"Coming!" Matt shouts. "You are telling me later." He tells me and we go back inside.
Music starts booming from the speakers.
"I need to go change." I mouth at Matt and he nods. I also need to take care of my uncle.
"Where have you been?" He asks me.
"I was out with some friends." I reply.
"At least you are being social." He tells me.
"I am going to take shower and go to sleep, I am exhausted." I lie about the last part. Of course I am taking a shower first. I just climbed a bloody cliff.
After showering I go and look at my wardrobe. What to wear?
After twenty minutes of looking for what to wear, I ended up wearing black leggings, a denim dress, my mom's necklace and black boots. I pull my hair in a ponytail.
Dammit, I am late.
I put the pillows under the blanket, turn the light off and sneak out of the window. Eliza was at the door keeping watch, at around eleven I would take her place.
I get in the Party House and find Matt, Sylvia, Jace and Chase dancing. Of course they are dancing.
I go and join them. Well... I should at least have some fun before I go outside.
~*~
It is midnight and I am standing outside. I should have brought a jacket, because it's bloody freezing.
I look around and see police lights. I can barely hear the siren.
I run inside and shout.
"They are coming!"
Then there was the usual panic. Everyone was running in random directions to hide. I find my friends and we go at a passage in the fridge. Yeah, the bloody fridge. We pushed the wall inside and went behind.
Thick walls. Mechanics. I don't know how, but we hid an a room behind the fridge.
And guess what? It is as cold as it was outside in here.
I try to stop my teeth from chattering, but I can't.
"You cold?" Matt asks. Well, duh!
"Nah, I'm fine." I lie. I don't need his help.
"Are you sure?" He asks again.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I say.
We all spend twenty minutes in there, when we hear a boy shout.
"The cake is ready!" Is all he says and everyone, including us, swarms out of their hiding places and goes back to the dance floor. It is now Chase's turn to keep watch.
Yeah, there is someone out even after the cops come in. Eliza told me that they once made the mistake of not putting someone out, and they nearly got caught. Looks like someone went outside to take a breath, saw the cars and alerted everyone inside.
We dance a bit, but I got bored and went at a couch to rest a bit.
Then an idiot came and started flirting on me.
Five minutes later, he was sitting in a chair at the kitchen with ice on his face.
What can I say? My punches are harder than my slaps.
Eliza and Jace couldn't stop laughing and even Sylvia smiled. I have no idea why, all I did was punch an idiot in the face.
~*~
At around dawn, I went back home. Day two is over and I could really use some sleep.
I put on my pajamas, undo my ponytail and go to sleep.
Uncle Dan woke me up at nine o'clock to go to the bakery. I put on the same clothes I was wearing when I climbed the cliff with the others yesterday and left.
What will I do with only three hours of sleep a day? Dammit...
The bakery was, surprisingly, empty. I got my muffins and went back home.
Yeah, all I eat is muffins. Got a problem? Didn't think so.
I sat at the park bench. I was too hungry to wait until I got home.
Guess who I saw there? Sylvia. Not that I had a problem with that. If she's mean to me, she must have her reasons. I am not going to deal with it until it makes me snap, and believe me, I am a patient person.
To be truthful, I was kind of worried. I don't like making people upset. I can't stand the guilt.
Even if I hate a person with all my heart, I can't stand up to them and insult them in a hurtful way.
Anyway, it was the first time I ever saw Sylvia without Eliza around (apart from when either keeps watch at the parties at night).
I waved at her when she looked at my direction and walked towards her.
"Hi, Sylvia! How are you?" I ask her.
"Fine. What are you doing here?" She asks me indifferently.
"Having breakfast. Muffin?" I give her the box. She looks surprised I am being nice at her, even though I haven't been anything but that at her. She takes one.
"Thanks." She smiles.
"It's nothing." I smile back. "Are we going up there again?" I signal at the cliffs.
"I don't think so. You should ask Eliza, or Matt." She replies.
"Okay. Do you want to come by at my house?" I ask her.
"Sorry, I can't. I am busy now. I am playing hide-and-seek with my little brother." I had absolutely forgotten she had a brother. How stupid am I?
"It's fine. See you later!" I tell her and leave.
Okay... It is Sunday morning and I hadn't had any time to finish my homework, so let's start with that.
This is going to be a long day...
