CHAPTER 6: THINGS GO HAYWIRE
Dev woke up to switch off his alarm that was drilling holes in his head. He got off the bed and had a shower. After he got ready to leave for work, he walked down the stairs to have breakfast and take his mother's blessings. Neha blocked his way down. She was waiting for him for half an hour.
"What happened Neha?" Dev asked her.
"Bhai, I need some money," She asked.
"Why?" Dev asked inquisitively. Neha had never asked him for money. She would always ask their parents for money.
"Bhai! How do I ask them money for their own 30th-anniversary gift?" She squealed in frustration.
Dev felt knocked out. How had he forgotten his parents' thirtieth anniversary! It was just in a week's time. There were so many arrangements yet to be made.
"How much do you need?" Dev asked. "I will handle the costs of the party and the other celebrations." He added.
"I need five thousand for now," Neha said.
"Here you go," He said handing her ten thousand rupees.
I promise you mom and dad that I will make your anniversary party really special. I will give you all the happiness I can. I need to deal with the problem of these Sharmas really soon. He thought.
Everyone in the Sharma mansion was waiting for Sonakshi to come down to have breakfast. Suraj had stopped speaking to Shekhar since the previous night. Madhuri had made sure that her husband had slept on the couch in the living room. Shekhar himself was not in a jolly state after looking at the state of his daughter on the first day that she had gone to Dixit Industries as an intern.
Sonakshi walked down the stairs all ready to go to the office remembering the fact that she had to be early so that she doesn't receive punishment for her failed punctuality.
"Good Morning Sona!" Madhuri started a conversation with Sonakshi.
"Good Morning Maa!" Sonakshi said quite chirpily.
"How are you feeling today angel?" Suraj asked genuinely. Suraj had decided that if Sona didn't want to go back to Dixit Industries, he wouldn't allow her to go back and would not allow her to fall prey to their father's emotional blackmail that he was so good at.
"I am good bhai. Just was a little put-off yesterday night. Sorry for startling you all," Sona apologized.
"What happened?" Shekhar asked, "Does your hand still burn?"
Two pairs of angry eyes glared at him. Suraj was so angry at the casual tone that Shekhar used when he was asking Sona what happened. Madhuri was angry at her husband due to his question which could remind Sona of whatever had caused pain to Sona the previous day.
"Nothing Dad," Sona simply replied. "Bhai, can you drop me off earlier today? My boss is really strict about the punctuality of the employees. If I get late, I might be punished."
Suraj nodded not glancing anymore at his father. Shekhar looked down at his plate. Madhuri sighed internally looking at her family.
"Hello Arjun," Dev said picking up his ringing phone. "What happened?"
"Devil. There is a problem," Arjun said, fear evident in his voice.
Why is Arjun so scared? Did anything happen to Sonakshi? Is she fine? Dev thought Why am I thinking about her? She is Shekhar Sharma's daughter. That man protects his family too well.
"What happened to Sonakshi?" Dev asked, worry lacing his voice.
"Dev, she is fine. That is not the problem," Arjun retorted. Arjun could not understand what had changed in a few hours. Dev had been clean-bowled by that lady. The lady whom Dev himself called the revenge target. The enemy's daughter.
Dev breathed a sigh of relief. There was a feeling in him that he did not completely understand. He knew that he wanted her. He did not know whether this was called just attraction or it was love. However, she was the enemy.
"Are you following her or not?" Dev asked, a bit annoyed at Arjun for scaring him to the core.
"Um... not yet. She didn't leave her house yet," Arjun answered.
"Then, tell me the problem that you think is freaking important," Dev said.
"Devil... Um... We lost the deal with Chang," Arjun blurted, expecting Dev's anger and his assumption was right.
"What!" Dev shouted in disbelief and anger running all through his veins, "NG had said the deal with Chang would be ours. It is worth 1500 crores."
"I am sorry, boss. But, NG couldn't crack it," Arjun replied, disappointment clear in his tone.
"Then, with whom did Chang make a deal?" Dev asked, cursing internally at that person who had snatched such an important deal from him.
"Songbird," Arjun revealed.
Komolika entered her fiance Anurag's room. She looked all around. There was a stinging pain in her chest that grew when she looked around the room.
She saw posters of him and Sonakshi all around his room. She felt hurt that the man she was going to marry did not even keep one picture of her in his room. She felt sad at her fate that she had fallen for a man who had fallen for another woman.
She thought about what had happened to Princess Diana of Wales.
Once upon a time, there was a girl who had fallen in love and married a charming prince. But the prince was in love with another woman who was in turn in love with another man and they all lived unhappily ever after.
She said remembering the dialogue.
"Will I be unhappy if I marry him?" she thought out loud.
"No, you won't. I promise you that much," a deep voice spoke out. Anurag had entered the room when Komolika was looking at Sonakshi's photos.
"I am sorry. I didn't mean to pry into your personal space," She fumbled.
"It's ok. You will be my wife soon. I promise you that you will be able to live life here without any discomfort," Anurag said.
She nodded. She did not know what to say. She felt at a loss for words for starting a conversation with him. Anurag walked toward the posters on his room's wall.
"This is my Prerna," He said pointing to Sonakshi.
"Isn't this Sonakshi Sharma?" Komolika asked confused that Anurag was calling Sonakshi Sharma 'Prerna'.
"She is my inspiration," He said to her, "I would like to tell you one thing. I cannot love you the way I love Sona. I promise you I will not do any stupid things out of my love for Sona that will make people question our marriage and our relationship."
Komolika nodded in understanding. It was fine for her that Anurag had promised her that he will stand by her always. She just needed the world to know Anurag belonged to her.
"Songbird! Songbird! Songbird!" Natasha was shrieking as she was throwing things all around her room.
The previous night Chang had made a deal with Songbird instead of Devil. Devil would be immensely angry at her failure of getting the deal. She would be punished. He never spared people who failed him.
"It is all because of you Songbird. My life is going to be spoilt. Devil will punish me. My dreams of getting close to Devrath Dixit are ruined," She shouted.
Karma hits back Her subconscious mind mocked her.
"Shut up! I have never wronged anyone!" Natasha yelled.
Oh, really? Her mind spoke again.
"Yes," She screamed.
Have you forgotten how you betrayed Sonakshi? Are you a pure soul? No darling! You are not a pure soul. You have sinned. Her mind laughed at her.
