Chapter 19: Earnest Exchange
The evening settled into a quiet hum. The city lights outside the hotel suite twinkled against the dark sky, casting a gentle glow on the room. Noah had already slipped into a relaxed state, sitting on the couch with his laptop open, a comfortable silence between him and Liam. The day's events had been exhausting, but there was an ease in the air now, a change in the dynamic that neither of them could deny.
Liam had been quiet, too, but the words that had been swirling in his mind all day were finally starting to push to the surface. He had spent so long building walls around himself, guarding his emotions and his struggles. But something about the stillness of the room, the trust he had in Noah—it made him feel like he could let the walls crack.
"Hey, Noah," Liam's voice was softer than usual, quieter even. It was as if the very act of speaking these words was going to take more out of him than he was ready for. "Can I talk to you about something?"
Noah glanced over from his laptop, his eyes immediately focusing on Liam with a mix of curiosity and attentiveness. "Of course, man. What's on your mind?"
Liam hesitated, shifting on the edge of the bed, unsure of how to start. He had never been one to open up easily, especially not about the things that weighed most heavily on him. But Noah was different. Noah had a way of making Liam feel like he could be more than the rigid, controlled version of himself that he had worked so hard to maintain.
"I guess..." Liam started, his fingers fidgeting in his lap. "I've been thinking a lot about work and my family lately. My whole life feels like it's been about keeping everything in line. Keeping the family's image intact, making sure we all look perfect to the outside world. But it's exhausting. And it's not even real, you know?"
Noah closed his laptop and set it down, giving Liam his full attention. There was a seriousness in his gaze now, an understanding that made Liam feel less alone. He continued, though his voice faltered at times, the vulnerability of his words unsettling him.
"I've always been the one to fix things, to make sure that everyone is happy, that the company looks good, that our image is perfect. It's like I've spent my whole life holding everything together, and I've just... forgotten who I am outside of that role." Liam's breath hitched slightly. He hadn't realized how much he had bottled up until now. "And sometimes, I wonder if I even know what it means to just...be me. To stop trying so hard."
Noah didn't say anything right away. He simply watched Liam, his gaze calm and understanding, and for the first time, Liam didn't feel the need to hide or defend himself. It was as though, in this space with Noah, it was okay to let the cracks show.
Liam let out a deep breath, his chest tight. "I guess what I'm trying to say is...I don't know how to stop being the person everyone expects me to be. I don't know if I can let go of that. I don't even know who I'd be if I did."
Noah's voice was steady, soft, but firm as he responded. "Liam...you don't have to have it all figured out. I mean, we all have our own stuff to work through. You don't need to be the perfect son, the perfect professional, or the perfect anything for anyone else. You just need to be you. And I think, deep down, you're starting to see that."
Liam looked at him then, surprised by the sincerity in Noah's words. There was no mockery, no sarcasm—just a genuine understanding that felt like a weight lifting from his shoulders.
"I've never been good at that, though," Liam admitted quietly. "Being myself. Especially when it feels like everything depends on me being perfect. My family...they don't exactly encourage me to be anything other than the role they've set for me. And I...I don't know how to break free from that."
Noah's eyes softened, and for the first time, Liam saw a hint of vulnerability in him too. It wasn't something Noah often showed, but there was a quiet sincerity in the way he spoke next. "I get it, Liam. I really do. But you don't have to do it alone. You don't have to be perfect. Not for me, not for anyone."
Liam swallowed, unsure of what to say. For the first time in a long time, he felt like someone truly understood—not just the professional mask he wore, but the person he was beneath it all. And in that moment, he realized how much he had come to trust Noah.
"I don't know how to let go of it all," Liam murmured. "But maybe...maybe I don't need to do it by myself."
Noah gave a small, reassuring smile. "You don't. And I'm here, whether you need help with work, or just someone to listen. I've got your back."
The words hit Liam in a way he hadn't expected. A sense of peace washed over him, as if, for the first time, he didn't have to carry everything alone. And though he wasn't sure where things were headed with Noah, he felt an undeniable shift. Maybe he didn't have to be perfect. Maybe, just maybe, he could allow himself to be a little bit more vulnerable.
For the first time in a long while, Liam didn't feel the need to be anything other than himself. And Noah, in all his sincerity and understanding, was the person who made that possible.
