Chapter Twelve
I'm sorry.
The rain fell heavily and the evening sky was extra dark and cloudy. The sky rumbled and lightening struck across the clouds. Millicent ran across the road with only a small umbrella to shelter her from the rain.
The path was muddy and dark, a loud thunder caught Millicent off guard and she slipped and fell into the mud. Her dress was very light and was a disadvantage to her as it was unable to protect her from the cold. A sudden gush of wind came by and carried her umbrella away from her possession. "No! This day can not get any worse for me."
She stood up and continued down the road with only her hand to shield her from the rain and a blurry vision due to the heavy downpour. Her dress was muddy but before she got to her destination, the rain had washed it off.
Arriving at a casino down the road, being drenched from the rain made the dress even more light and exposing, revealing the white underwear she had on. Her dress dripped water as she moved across the room feeling embarrassed as people stared at her.
Unable to find Davy, she called his phone and a stranger picked up "Hello?"
"Hello! Where are you?" an old man said.
"I'm at the casino, where are you?"
"I'm at.... Wait I think I see you, what are you wearing?"
"Uhm I'm in a purple dress?"
"You wet right?"
"Excuse me?" She questioned with furrowed brows.
"You are soaked from the rain aren't you?"
"Right! Yes I am." She responded sharply, the moment she realized what the man actually meant.
"I'm waving at you, turn around!"
"Oh okay." She turned around and noticed an old scrawny man waving at her and she waved back, smiling. She hung up and went to join him where he was.
"Come with me." The old man gestured at Millicent to follow him and she obeyed.
They walked down to a silent and a darker part of the club and Millicent felt uneasy. They arrived at a lonely table where Davy sat looking intoxicated.
"He's been drinking and drinking non stop since he got here and he didn't even know when one of my boys stole all his belongings! But luckily I was there to return them to him, I'm afraid some other thugs will do the same to him."
"Thank you sir for being so considerate." Millicent replied, smiling.
He handed her Davy's properties. "Get him out of here soon, here's his car keys."
"Thank you sir, thank you so much, you are very kind."
"Just get him out of here!" The old man grunted and walked away, his steps were wobbly like one of his legs was shorter than the other.
Millicent sat next to him pulling the glass of alcohol away from him but he struggled with her. "Davy what are you doing?"
"Why are you here? What do you want?" Davy argued in a drunken state of mind.
"Well firstly, a stranger called me with your number and said you might get killed soon if no one comes to take you away."
Davy laughed. "Of all the numbers on my phone, he called you? Do you really expect me to believe that?"
"What are you saying?" She frowned.
"Stop lying, why are you stalking me? Why do you make me suffer this much Millicent?!" he yelled out.
"What do you mean? Stop being this way Dave!"
"Millicent I— what do you want from me? After how rude and disrespectful I was to you today, why do you even still care about me?" He said as tears rolled down his eyes and his lips curved into an upside down smile.
"Davy—"
He snatched the glass of alcohol from her and drank it all at once. His eyes were red from crying too much and fist was clenched tight on the glass in his hand.
"Davy let's get you home." She said in a calm tone.
"I'm sorry Millicent." He whispered.
"What?"
"I'm sorry Millicent, I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry—"
"Davy stop it!"
"—I'm sorry!"
"What is wrong with you Dave. You're drunk, let's get you out of here before they kick us out."
She seized the glass from his possession and assisted him to his feet. She raised one of his arms and placed it around her neck and put her arms around his waist to support his weight. His steps were wobbly and he rested his head on her shoulder. On their way out, she saw the old man sitting at a table with a few others smoking and drinking. "Thank you again sir!" She yelled out but the old man just waved her off like she was a fly.
She placed him in the passengers seat and used the seat belt to assist him while she got in the drivers seat and drove off, with the aid of the GPS in his car, she was able to find his house and she helped him to his bed.
She took off his shoe and wristwatch and laid him down to sleep but he pulled her onto him and cuddled her tight. "Don't leave me alone Millicent."
"Davy!"
"Stay with me." He demanded like a little child. He squeezed her to him and planted a kiss on her forehead "I'm sorry Millicent."
"Stop saying that Davy."
He cuddled her and fell asleep almost immediately but even in his sleep was still murmuring the words "I'm sorry".
Being in his arms reminded Millicent of when they were together, being so close to him, his warm breath on her neck and his hands around her waist. For the first time in a very long while, Millicent was embraced by her first love again. She placed a palm on his cheek and stared at his face as he slept like a little child. She fell asleep in his tight snuggle enjoying the warmth their body exchanged.

The bright reflection of the sun shone on Millicent's face and she covered her face with the blanket. She turned to the other side of the bed and went back to sleep, the sound of water splashing in the bathroom brought her back to her senses. "Oh my god!" She realised where she was and fear gripped her. She noticed she was no longer in her wet purple dress but instead was putting on a bogus top that obviously belonged to Davy and she gasped.
The sound of the water stopped and a wet Davy walked out of the bathroom with a small towel around his waist. "You're awake." He said calmly. "Good morning."
"Uh—" Millicent froze, feeling tongue tied.
"Did you sleep well?" He asked from where he sat on a leather chair opposite the bed and Millicent nodded.
"I made you breakfast." He said, pointing at a small tray on a desk close to the bed.
"What?"
"Well as you know, I don't know how to cook so I just made toast for you with orange juice but the toast is kinda burnt." He chuckled at his mistake.
"What is happening? Am I —this is a dream right?" She squinted a little.
"This is far from a dream." He replied with a chuckle.
"Am I — by chance, did I die last night? Did WE die last night?" She inquired in confusion.
"Okay now that's just hilarious!" He replied, laughing out loud.
"Then I don't understand, are you by any chance thinking I'm Tara? I'm Millicent."
"I know you are." He said, crossing his arms across his broad chest.
"So why are you..... I don't know... Why?" She asked and her big eyes shone even bigger.
His expression became sober for a moment but he immediately smiled once again. "Eat please."
"Did you poison me?"
"No dear I would never."
"Are you still drunk? What in the world is going on?"
"Just eat okay."
She was hesitant but his smile made her somewhat relaxed. She took a look at the black toast that laid in the plate and took a bite out of the hard bitter toast but immediately spat it out. "What is that!" She took a whole gulp from the glass of orange juice trying to wash away the bitter taste from her mouth.
"Is it that bad?"
"It's worse than anything I've ever tasted! It's like I took a bite of chaff and not just ordinary chaff but bitter chaff instead and it was so so so terrible!" She exclaimed with so much stress on the "sos".
She noticed how much her words hurt him, his smile had disappeared and his brows furrowed. "Oh no that's not what I meant, I mean it's quite burnt but it's not so bad." She took another bite from the toast and chewed it and forced herself to swallow it.
"No don't do that!" Davy yelled.
He rushed to the bed where she was and collected the toast from her. "If it's so bad then you don't have to eat it. Don't try to make me feel better when I've done worse to you." He said, feeling heavyhearted.
"I—" feeling short of words, Millicent stared into his deep blue eyes and he stared back into hers. He cupped both sides of her face and shifted his gaze to her full lips. "I'm really really—" before he could complete his sentence, Millicent kissed him and he kissed her back.
His kiss was soft and gentle, his tongue licked her lips until she parted them to let him in. Her mouth tasted like burnt toast but he didn't mind, he enjoyed the heat her body offered him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he squeezed her tight to him, her body pressed against his bare chest and his hands strolled down her back. Every touch from him sent shivers down her spine and made her tingle in her middle. She felt small and delicate as he held her against his body with his massive hands. It felt so right, she'd never ever been like that before. So possessively, terrible craving assailed her.
He stopped abruptly leaving her wanting as he pulled away. "This isn't right." He said looking sad.
"I know but I'm not complaining."
"No, I am, I can't do this, I shouldn't. I'm sorry again." He moved to the other side of the bed creating a distance between them. "Shall we eat out or should I order?" He asked with a faint smile on his face.
"I think I should go home, my roommate will be worried."
"No Milly, you're not a child, it's okay for you to sleep over at a man's place."
"It is but it's not okay to sleep over at my boss's place."
"Millicent—"
"I'm sorry," she interrupted him. "I just can't look at you right now after how stupid I acted."
"It's fine, I'm not complaining"
"But I am." She replied almost immediately leaving him defenseless. "Where did you put my clothes I wore yesterday?" She asked getting up from the bed.
Without saying a word, he stood up and went to another room to get her things where he carefully folded them. Along with it, he gave her the costumes he got her for the party.
"Oh no I can't take those." She refused the instant she saw them.
"Am I supposed to wear them?" He asked, crossing his arms across his bare chest.
"You can give it to Tara or something."
"Do you really think Tara would wear something worn by you?" He asked, arching his brow.
"She doesn't have to know."
"Your photos with my family is all over the internet and clearly Tara would have seen them."
"What? Why?"
"You attended a party hosted by multi billionaires Millicent, what were you expecting?" He questioned her.
"That's true I guess. Wait you changed my clothes yourself?"
"Yes, why?"
"Why would you—"
"Why wouldn't I?" He interrupted. "We dated for seven years Millicent, there's really nothing to hide." He smiled.
"When you put it that way, you make me feel even more terrible than I already feel."
"Milli—"
"Please excuse me let me change." she cut him off.
He stood opposite her silently for a few moments before respecting her wish and walked out of the room.
Millicent quickly changed into her own clothes and without saying a word to him, she walked out of the house and hailed a taxi to drop her home.
On getting to the room, Davy realised Millicent didn't take the dress, shoe nor jewelry, she carefully arranged them on the bed for him and laid the bed well for him. He sighed deeply and fell to bed.
Millicent closed her eyes tight and rested her head on the chair in the taxi, at the edge of dozing off, her phone buzzed and it was doctor Naomi. "Millicent please your attention is needed at the hospital."
"What's the problem?"
"Just come here right now okay?"
"Oh of course. Sir please can I stop at hope hospital instead?"
"Sure thing ma'am." the taxi driver replied.
"god what happened?"
