Chapter Six

Miscreant.
Zack's voice echoed through the elevator making Millicent close her ears "Be quiet!"

He turned to look at her but ignored her. He kept banging on the elevator doors but it was all useless. After many failed attempts, he fell to his knees giving up.

"Has this ever happened before?" Millicent asked.

He silently nodded his head negatively, staring down at the floor still on his knees.

"You're so dramatic," she said, rolling her eyes.

"Remember what I told you a few minutes ago? Your face is bad luck!"

"Will you be quiet! Like being stuck here isn't enough, do you have to whine like a baby?"

He raised his head to look at her, arching his brow, "a baby?" He got off the ground and dusted his body. "I'm the manager of this company!, don't you think I deserve a little respect?"

"Shit!"

"What?"

"I need to use the bathroom."

"Are you —like seriously are you kidding me? Right now?"

She nodded like a little child and he scoffed, "you can't hold it?"

"Not for too long."

"Ah geez. Why?!"

"I think I can find a way out. I need to climb your shoulders."

"What? There's no way I'm letting you climb on my expensive clothes!"

"So you'd rather see me pee on myself?"

"Arghhh!! Fine, be gentle, okay?"

Millicent rolled her eyes, she bent and took off her heels, "It's of good quality, I'm trusting you to keep it safe okay?"

"Whatever, sure, just drop it."

He got on his knees and she sat on his shoulders, he gently stood up trying to make sure she didn't fall.

She pushed open a small hole on the top of the elevator and she climbed out leaving Zack behind. "Miscreant! Are you leaving me? Don't you dare!" he yelled out loudly.

"Will you calm your horses? I'm not leaving you. Baby."

"Don't call me that!"

"The exit is just up ahead, I'm going to try to get help."

"Hey!"

"What?!"

"Be careful, okay, try not to hurt yourself." Zack said in a calm tone but Millicent just ignored and continued to climb.

On getting to the door leading to the CEO's office just above their elevator, she used all her might to push the doors apart and finally it opened. "Ha! I did it." she celebrated.

Slipping and almost falling, Millicent held on to the ropes holding the elevator "Ahh!"

"Don't fall, okay!" Zack yelled worriedly.

"I'll try to keep that in mind!"

Walking out of his office was Davy who continuously checked his wristwatch. Heading for the elevator, to his surprise, the elevator was gone but instead it was a Millicent hanging on to some ropes. "Hi," she said, waving nervously.

"Mil... What are you doing?" he asked, arching a curious brow.

"Here catch me."

"What?"

Between the twinkle of an eye, Millicent throws herself at Davy and he fell to the ground with her landing on top of him, "oof!" Davy exclaimed in pain.

She stared into his deep blue eyes that stared back into hers. She could feel his heart beat against her chest and his arms curled around her waist. Such moments reminded her of the old times with him and it seemed it did the same for him.

For an awkward moment of silence, they locked gaze and for a moment, Millicent felt his hold tighten against her sending shivers down her spine.

Snapping back into his senses, Davy pushed her off him. "Are you crazy!"

"I'm sorry sir."

"Miscreant!!!" Zack yelled out, still trapped in the elevator.

"Relax okay. Climb out of there, I'll pull you up."

"Climb? Me?"

"It seems you like it in there. I'm leaving."

"Wait! Fine I'll do it just help me out of here!" He yelled, his voice echoing through the elevator. "I can't get to the top."

"What a pussy," she whispered beneath her voice "I'm coming back down okay!"

"Wait! Are you out of your mind, why would you do that?" Davy stopped her gripping her hand.

"He needs help and I don't see you getting down there."

He stood silently for a moment before letting her arm free. Millicent climbed back down and stretched her hand through the opening at the top of the elevator, "need a hand buddy?". Zack reached for her hand but she pulled back. "My shoes?"

"Are you kidding me? They're right here okay."

She smiled and helped him out. They both climbed out of the elevator together, Zack jumped first and offered to help Millicent but she refused. "I don't need your help, pretty boy." She jumped but missed a step and almost fell but luckily Zack pulled her.

Wrapping his arms around her waist, he pulled her towards him to prevent her from falling. "Guess you needed this pretty boy's help after all." He said winking.

She pushed free from his hold smiling and he chuckled, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. You?"

"Couldn't have been better, I got called pretty."

They both laughed, it was like Davy was invisible and they enjoyed each other's company.

Davy cleared his throat making both of them stare at him. "Mr Kent! I uh... Didn't see you there."

"It's okay, as long as you're both fine."

"Yes sir."

"Have the elevator check out and let everyone know it's unavailable for now."

"Immediately sir." Zack said before leaving them alone.

"Miss Owen, my office."

She walked obediently behind him gritting her teeth as he entered his office. Before he could say anything, she yelled out. "I'm sorry for what happened Mr Kent, I forgot how things are between us and I apologize sincerely."

He stared at her, arms crossed. "What's between you and my manager?"

"Sorry? You mean Zack? Nothing could ever be between us than hatred and enmity." She replied.

"And why is that?"

"With all due respect, why do you care?"

"Excuse me? I am your boss and my staff certainly can't be having enmity between them, it'll bring down my business!"

"I'm sorry for my question."

"You definitely have a lot to learn Millicent, I'm giving you a month to be a better secretary else you're fired you hear me!"

Millicent couldn't speak, his words made her heart ache but she remembered what Milena had told her so she tried not to break down.

"Are you deaf?"

"No sir. I'm sorry sir, I'll try to be better." she replied, fighting back her tears.

"You're giving me a headache, just get out and wear your freaking shoes, I can't have my new secretary looking like a caveman." He said rubbing his temples.

"Yes sir." She responded with her voice almost breaking.

She turned to walk away from his office but heard him say, "god what was I even thinking! A failure as a girlfriend, what assurance do I have that she'll be a better staff member?"

The tears she had tried so hard to console finally escaped her eyes and she placed a hand on her aching heart trying to console herself.

Walking out of the office, she bumped into Zack. "I forgot your sho— are you okay?"

"Yeah thanks." She replied immediately, wiping off her tears. She snatched her shoes from him and rushed down the stairs.

Zack watched her as she ran off feeling a little bit compassionate towards her. "Is Kent being too hard on her?" He asked himself, "poor thing."

She somehow found her way into the women's bathroom and she sat there for over ten minutes crying her heart out. She tried to stop but the tears kept on coming causing a severe headache.

Few minutes later, she went out of the bathroom after washing her face. She ascended up the stairs and went to her desk just outside Davy's office.

The door pushed open and Zack walked out of the office, "miscreant!"

"Not now pretty boy."

"Don't tell me you're already falling for me, you're calling me pretty boy too often now."

Millicent rolled her eyes but her lips curved into a faint smile.

"Give me a minute."

Zack rushed down the stairs and a few minutes later, returned with two cups of coffee. "I don't really know what you like, I just guessed."

"Black coffee."

"Yeah, you seem like that kind of woman."

She smiled. Davy was about to leave his office when he heard voices outside.

"That's my favorite kind of coffee actually. Thank you."

"Yesss!"

She giggled at his childish reaction, "why are you getting me this anyway, is it poisoned?" she asked, sniffing the cup.

He laughed. "I wish but no. I'm just saying thank you for saving us."

"Hmm thanks." She replied, smiling from ear to ear.

"Pleasure's all mine. Now tell me, are you falling in love with me?"

She laughed out loud. "Don't get cocky."

They both chatted for a while with a lot of giggling and laughter. Davy eavesdropped on their conversation making him somewhat jealous for reasons he didn't understand.

Their laughter echoed through the hallway and Davy couldn't bear it any longer, he bursted out of his office swinging the doors ajar.

"Mr Kent!" "Sir!" Both Zack and Millicent exclaimed in stupefaction.

"See me in my office Millicent."

"Yes sir."

"Right now!"

Millicent rushed into his office without an opportunity to say goodbye to Zack.

"You're going to sit there and file those paperwork, you haven't done a single thing since you got here!" Davy yelled at her, making her whimper.

"Yes sir."

She sat on the chair he provided her with inside his office and began scrolling through a heap of documents. A few times their eyes would meet but he'd instantly look away the moment she noticed he was staring.

After a million paperwork, it was finally closing time and Millicent was overwhelmed by Joy. She felt like she had been working for years and it was only her first day. She wished Davy a goodnight and rushed out of his office colliding with Zack again.

"I'm sorry." Millicent apologized.

"It's Okay. Are you going home already?"

"Yeah."

"Can you wait for me outside?"

"Why?"

"Just do as I say."

"Fine, fine whatever Mr Manager." She said sarcastically, making Zack smile.

Millicent waited patiently for Zack outside the building who was purposely stalled by Davy. "Wait, would you like to come over to my place like old times?"

"I'm sorry I really can't ... Honestly. I'd love to hang out with you but I really must go, someone's waiting for me." Zack ran out of the office and within minutes was outside with Millicent, breathing heavily like he was about to pass out.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm... I'm okay... I'm fine."

"You're so lazy, can we go?"

He nodded still panting and Millicent just laughed at him.

Davy watched them from upstairs and an unexplainable feeling captured his heart. He felt jealous seeing them together but he told himself it was none of his business even if it bothered him. He took his belongings and went home.

On getting home, his door was opened and he heard slow music coming from inside, he was hesitant before he finally moved in slowly.

He peeked through the open door trying to see who was inside but he saw no one. He quietly tiptoed into his living room, trying not to be heard. Taking possession of a bottle of champagne the person had placed on the table, Davy felt it would be a good weapon for protection. Noises came from the kitchen and his hands trembled. His heart paced and sweat streaks rolled down his forehead.

Taking a firm grip on the bottle, Davy feared the villain he was to face but hoped the bottle would be good enough to take him out. As he was about entering the kitchen, Davy heard a loud bark and he fell to the ground, the bottle shattering everywhere and the wine stained the floor.

He yelled and covered his face with his palm cowering in fear and the vicious dog continued barking.
