Chapter Five
Second first day.
"I'm sorry, please give me a chance."
"I said get out. Where's the formal wear? You reek of alcohol and you look so untidy on your first day, don't you remember that first impressions go a long way? If you can't organize yourself then why should I make you my secretary?" His tone was aggressive but calm.
"I'm —sorry." She said, bowing down in shame.
He sighed deeply and said before walking away, "leave and get yourself organized, I can't have you around my building looking like a warthog, it'll tarnish my image. Resume tomorrow instead."
She raised her head to look at him, feeling like strangling him but at the same time was thankful to him. "Yes sir." She said in a low tone.
She bowed her head in shame as some other staff stared at her.
On her way out, she bumped into Zack on his way in, "you!" She exclaimed.
"You!" Zack scoffed, feeling disgusted. "Did you follow me here? Are you stalking me?"
"Stalking you? I should be asking you the same thing!"
"Why would you?!"
"Why wouldn't I? I work here." She said, crossing her arms.
"What? You're really unbelievable! You're a terrible liar."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"I've been working here for two years now and I've never seen your face before."
"Well... I'm the new secretary of the CEO himself!"
"Ha! Why would a psycho like you be accepted at a place of high standards like this?"
"Psycho?!"
"Will you two shut up!"
Davy had been watching them, staring at both of them in confusion as they yelled at each other "What is the meaning of this!"
"I'm sorry sir." Both Zach and Millicent echoed.
Davy sighed, placing his hands on his head. He turned and walked away in anger.
"Mr Kent!" Zack yelled out as he ran behind Davy after sharing one last disgusted look at Millicent.
Millicent hissed at him and stomped out of the building.
Walking down the busy road of st josephs street, Millicent scrolled through the thousands of missed calls and unread messages from Milena and decided to text back. "Hey girl, I'm on my way home. Everything's fine." With a smiley face emoji and a heart. She clicked on the send button and tucked her phone back in her pocket.
On getting home, the door was locked so she pressed the doorbell and almost immediately, the door flung open. "What the fuck bitch!"
"Hey I'm sorry." She said, pushing past Milena as she dragged herself inside.
"What in the dynasty of China happened to you!" Milena closed the door behind her and followed Millicent who threw herself at the couch "You're not gonna talk?"
"I'm sorry girl, after meeting up with Davy last night he spoiled my mood and I decided to drink my sorrows away."
"And you couldn't call me!" she furiously said, hitting Millicent on the ass making her grunt. "Do you know how worried sick I was? I even got more scared when your mom said you weren't with her."
"You told my mom?" she yelled sitting up.
"Do you think I'm stupid?"
Millicent sighed in relief and laid back on the chair.
"For fucks sake 2.0, you got me worried like crazy." Millicent closed her eyes pretending she was already asleep and Milena took a throw pillow and hit Millicent continuously. "How dare you try to fall asleep, you potato!"
"Ow!" Millicent cried in pain. She stood up and ran inside the bedroom and locked herself in.
"You big headed—stubborn ugh — I don't even know what to call you!" she yelled banging at the door.
"At least get out here and tell me what in the world happened to you last night. Where did you sleep? Why didn't you come home?"
"I was too drunk. A monkey took me to his place but nothing happened between us... I hope... But that's where I slept."
"What? Monkey? Get out here and tell me what actually happened."
Millicent opened the door and Milena hit her with the pillow one last time. They sat together and Millicent told her best friend the full story of how she spent her night and how Davy treated her.
"I'm sorry about that motherfucker's behavior but it wasn't a reason to get yourself wasted. I mean we were expecting worse really."
"I know. It's just somehow, his words made me doubt my existence."
"Milly! Don't say that."
"No really," she replied, hugging a pillow tight. "It's true I haven't gotten over him, it's been three years and I'm still living in the past. He's so successful and all but I'm just here acquiring loans and doing petty jobs for cash."
"Girl don't say that at all. Things were so easy for him because all his life he never struggled, he's been a fucking billionaire since he was literally born. Everything he wanted was given to him on a platter of gold. But people like us have to struggle for a while before we can be settled."
"How long Lena, the only people that care for me in this entire world are my Mom and you."
"And your Dad."
"Oh please." Millicent rolled her eyes.
"I'm just saying. Either way don't feel bad because of the things he said, instead you should brazen yourself because you work for him now so definitely you should be prepared for more. That was obviously just the tip of the iceberg and you can't keep feeling like a loser because of him."
"Thanks babe." Millicent said, hugging Milena tight. They cuddled for a while in silence before Milena broke free from the hug, "I'm starving, I haven't eaten at all since last night when you disappeared." She stood up and went to the kitchen to prepare a snack for herself and Millicent and they enjoyed the rest of the day together indoors.
AT THE OMEGATECH
"That will be all for today's meeting."
The employees packed their files and clipboards and exited the conference room but Davy instructed Zack to stay behind. After the very last employee of OMEGA TECH exited the room, Davy walked to where Zack was standing. "Let's have coffee." And Zack nodded positively.
They went to a cafeteria outside where their employees couldn't see them and sat together at a table close to the entrance. As they sipped their coffee, an awkward silence filled their midst making Zack uncomfortable. "Uh is there something you'd like to ask sir?"
"We're friends, don't talk so formally when no one can see us."
"Right, Dave what's up?"
Davy smirked, "nothing much Zack. Something is just unclear to me and I hoped you could enlighten me."
"You know I'm always glad to be of assistance to you. What do you want to know?"
"That girl... From earlier today."
"Yeah?" Zack questioned sipping his coffee.
"Is there anything between you two?"
The coffee burnt Zack's tongue as he heard the question making him spill it back out and Davy was irritated. "I'm sorry," he said grabbing a napkin and dabbing at his mouth, "it was hot."
Davy just rolled his eyes.
"That girl is a full time psychopath, mentally deranged I tell you."
"What makes you say so?"
Zack sighed and paused for a moment like he was remembering something and his reaction showed it was something he was truly irritated by before he finally said. "There's really nothing interesting to tell but I'd advise you to avoid her if you ever run into her." Sipping his coffee again.
"She's my new secretary."
Zack once again, spat his coffee this time at Davy's face. Davy was at the edge of exploding and he closed his eyes to calm himself. He felt a napkin against his face and he opened his eyes only to see Zack wiping his face and he slapped his hand away in anger.
"Sorry, it was… hot."
"Go home Zack."
"Yes."
Zack got up and exited the cafeteria repeating sorry as he walked away.
Davy was definitely not satisfied with the reply he got but he had no other option than to believe Zack because his ego wouldn't let him text Millicent about it.
The next morning, Millicent woke up at exactly five AM to get extra ready for work.
She washed the dye out of her hair returning it to its original blonde color. She spent more than thirty minutes scrubbing her body in the bathroom and she was finally done with everything by six fourty-seven, all that was left was to pick the perfect clothes for her second first day at work.
It was hard deciding between the limited amount of formal wear she had but she ended with a black suit trouser and shirt, a white collar shirt as an inner and a perfectly shined black heel. Her blonde hair in a perfect ponytail.
Her face was designed with a little makeup, red lipstick and little powder applied on her fair skin.
Finally at two after seven, she was ready for work. Milena was still asleep so she prepared breakfast for her before leaving.
She hailed a taxi and got to work just a few before eight. She slowed her steps as she got to the entrance of the building, she started doubting herself again if truly she had taken the right decision to work under a man she still loved even though clearly he didn't feel the same any longer.
In the past three years, she had never doubted any decisions she made.
The sound of a car pulling up behind her drew her attention and she turned around only to see Zack stepping out of the vehicle and she frowned.
Zack chatted with a man in the front seat who was probably his driver. Ending the conversation with a warm smile, the man drove off.
Zack turned only to notice Millicent eyeing him and he groaned loudly, "of all the faces in the world whyyyyy!!!"
"You should be thankful you saw a beautiful girl, it's good luck." She said winking at him.
"Ha! This face I see is definitely bad luck. Try to stay as far away from me as possible okay?"
"Whatever." she replied then stuck her tongue out.
He scoffed at her childish behavior and stared at her as she walked away from him and he walked behind her.
A young lady sat at a desk at the entrance and Millicent went to her, asking for the direction of the CEO's office and the lady directed her.
"Thank you." Millicent replied, smiling.
She walked into the elevator and Zack happened to be in it "Hey! What did I tell you?"
She bluntly ignored him.
He scoffed in annoyance. He was about to press the button and so was she and their hands touched. "Ewww!!" Millicent exclaimed cleaning her hands on her clothes. "Try to keep your fingers to yourself."
"Ha! Do you really think I'd ever try to touch you? The thought of it alone aggravates me."
He pushed the button and they were both heading to the same place, Davy's office.
The elevator ride wasn't so smooth, they'd bump into each other but immediately move apart from each other. The elevator stopped abruptly in the middle of nowhere and the door was stuck. "What? What is happening?"
Millicent pushed the button continuously but instead of performing it's normal function, it starts to spark. "Ow! It shocked me!"
"Oh my — I think it's stuck." Zack turned to look at Millicent and he felt like it was the end of the world "oh no.... Help!!!!!!!!!"
