Chapter 17

Peeta's POV.

I quicken my pace, realizing that, by now everyone is already waiting for me, and wondering if I just got lost in my way home, or something worst happened. Sometimes I feel like walking around in the early morning or in the death of the night. So I don't tend to tell Haymitch that I left, not wanting to wake him up. Today, at 5 in the morning I left the house and went to that small pound I discovered some time ago.

Just like I predicted, when I turn the corner, Finnick's car is already parked infront of the house, and Katniss is sat on the stairs of the front porch, with her arms crossed.

"There you are!" she says the moment she notices me approaching. "Where have you been? Everyone's been waiting for you! We're about to loose the plane." Katniss starts scolding me, and I kiss her, in attempt of shutting her.

"The plane will wait." I state. Katniss looks at me, a small smile in her lips, but she immediatly covers it with scowl. I chuckle and walk inside, with Katniss trailing behind me.

"Finally Peeta! About time you decided to show up. I was thinking I had bought the plane tickets for nothing!" Haymitch says, trying to cover up the fact that he was actually worried about me.

"Yeah, let's just go." I say.

"Hey, Peet." Finnick greets me, standing up from the couch, with Gale following his lead.

"Everything's already in the car. It's time to go." Gale says, heading outside. I nod, and walk behind him, entering in the backseats of the car. Katniss follows behind me and sits next to me.

"Squeeze! I need space." Gale orders us, before getting in the car and sitting next to Katniss.

"Why couldn't we order a cab? Finnick's car is tiny!" Katniss grumbles, since she's almost sitting in my lap, and her legs are awkwardly bent besides Gale.

"Hey, don't complain. It was me who had to wake up at 6 in the morning to drive you to the airport!" Finnick argues. Katniss huffs, understanding he's right. Finnick is the only one who could drive us to the airport. I don't have the driver's license yet, I'll be starting the classes here in a month, when the doctors think my concussion won't be risk anymore (although it's been long gone for a while now), Gale never took it and isn't interested in taking it in the near future. Even if he never said it out loud, I know it has to do with the loss of his father in that accident. Haymitch's license was taken from him, when he was caught driving drunk some years back. Katniss does have the driver's license, but she simply doesn't have a car. So Finnick volunteered to drive us to the airport last week, and of course, everyone agreed to that.

"Are you excited?" Katniss asks, smiling at me, her face inches away from my nose. I raise my eyebrws questioningly, not understanding her question. Katniss sights "For your brother's wedding? I'm sure it'll be nice for a change." she explains. I shape my mouth in a 'o', in understading, and shrugg.

"I guess. I kinda want to see Eddie again." I mumble, looking out the window, hoping my answer was enough for Katniss to understand that I don't feel like taklking right now. But, obviously, Katniss notices something is bothering me.

"What's wrong?" she asks me, her face switcing to a worried expression.

"Nothing." I say, not taking my eyes, from he car's window.

"Where were this morning?" Katniss asks again, and I can feel her loosing her patience. I look at her, no more seeing her smiling, or giving me one of her worried looks. Instead she looks at me, a huffy expression starting to appear on her features.

"I just went on a walk." I answer, starting to feel somewhat defensive, with all the questions she's asking. I try to controll my scowl, so that it's not to obvious to understand that I'm starting to loose my nerves.

"Katniss, let him be." Gale tells her quietly, understanding that if he doesn't calm one of us, with my unstable personality and Katniss's stubborness, we will be yelling at each other in a matter of minutes. Katniss huffs, crossing her arms in her chest, and pouting. I divert my gaze to the window again, letting myself get lost in thoughts.

The closer I get to see Ted again, the more anxious I am. When I arrive, I'll have to tell him about what happened to our mother. I don't want to though. The moment I told Gale about it around a month ago, I knew I had to tell Ted and Eddie about it. They deserve to know about this. But how do I tell them something like that? 'Hey guys! You must be curious about why I'm not with mom anymore. Well, she tried to kill me, thinking I was dad, and killed herself afterwards.' I run a hand through my hair. There's no nice way to tell this, whatever I say. I can't suggarcoat something like this.

Lately, I've been able to avoid telling them, making excuses to myself like I need to tell them this face to face, not through the phone. I try to tell myself not to tell Ted something like this so close to his wedding, that I'll ruin it, but I know I have to, somehow.

"Okay, we're here!" Finnick, exclaims, parking the car, and getting out. I open the car door and get out, heading for car's trunk to help Finnick take out our luggage. I pick up Katniss's cream suitcase and turn around, looking for her, not wanting to smudge her prestine piece of luggage by placing it in the ground. She's right beside me, still wearing the same pissed expression from moments ago. I handle it to her, giving her an appolegetic look, which she doesn't respond to, turning around and walking up to Haymitch and telling him something quietly. I sight, suddenley feeling guiçty for not telling her anything. I never do. I know I also should tell her and Haymitch about my past, but I can't. Not until I tell my brothers about it first.

"Okay, it's time." Gale says. I nod and close the trunk.

"Have fun guys." Finnick says. I fist bump him, and wait for everyone to say their goodbyes. "See you next week!" he tells us, getting in the car and leaving.

We walk in the airport, immediatly going to the line to handle our luggage. The whole process is a complete bump, waiting in lines, passing by security, and waiting in the departure gate. After we are settled in waiting for the plane, Gale and Haymitch go get us some coffee at Starbucks, leaving me and Katniss by ourselves. The moment they leave, the atmosphere gets awkwardly quiet, since Katniss is still pissed, and doesn't even glance at me. I fidget awkwardly in my seat.

"Katniss." I call her. She doesn't move a finger. I exhale loudly, looking uo at the ceiling. "Come on! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to upset you." I say, trying to get her attetion.

"You and Gale have an amazing bromance, I noticed." she states, not even flinching. I sight.

"Is that why you're so mad?" I ask her, unsurely.

This time she does look at me, her expression shifting to a aprehensible one. "No! Of course not! I'm happy that you guys are getting along well. That's not a problem." she says.

"Why are yous so upset, then?" I ask. Katniss bites her lip, thinking, not even herself knowing then answer to my question. After a while she sights and looks away.

"I don't know. I just wish you'd tell me." she states.

"Tell you what?" I ask her, although I don't want to know the answer.

"Everything! I'm your girlfriend, for god's sake! You should be more open with me! I always tell you everything! Do you not trust me?" Katniss answers, trying speak calmly, although I can notice a desperate edge to her voice. I reach out for her hand, giving it a light squeeze, trying to calm her down.

"Look, you're right. I love you, and I do trust you. I just-" I'm cut off by Katniss.

"You love me?" she asks me, barely audiable. I look away, feeling myself hottening at the statement I didn't even noticed I had said. I stutter a little, scared of Katniss's reaction but after a while I nod.

"I do." I answer, as confidently as I can. Katniss smiles at me, and kisses me lightly.

"I love you too." she answers quietly, her cheeks acquiring and pink tone to them. I smile at her, before I lock my arms around her waist. She almost immediatly snakes her arms around her neck, resting her cheek in my shoulder.

"I'm sorry." I tell her again.

"I'm sorry too." she answers me. I pull away from her and place my arm over her shoulder as she rests her head in my shoulder.

Four hours later we arrive the Capitol, and me and Katniss are in the exact same position, waiting with Haymitch and Gale for my brother to arrive. It doesn't take him long to arrive, apolagizing for his delay and claiming that traffic was awfall today.

"You must be Gale." Ted assumes, since he has never met him before. The only reason Gale is acompaining us to the wedding is because Katniss's mom wouldn't let her come to the wedding unless Gale came with us too. So, here he is.

"Yeah, that's me." Gale confirms, ignoring the hand Ted extended for him to shake and entering the back seat of the car. Ted gives me a weird look and I shrugg, giving him a hug.

"How've you been? Eddie's been completely crazy about seeing you again." Ted states. I give him a nervous smile, wondering how am I going to tell Ted and Eddie about everything. I'm about to answer something awkward, but Ted turns towards Katniss. "Ahh, the lovely Katniss, as annoying as ever!" he teases her.

"Wow, this must be a record! I have yet to say something and already got in your nerves!" Katniss jokes sarcasticaly "You really are a complete ass." she adds teasingly, before getting in the car and sitting beside Gale.

Ted laughs and shruggs "I try my very best." he pipes up.

Haymitch brushes past me, giving Ted a solemn nod accompanied with a surly expression, and sits in the back of the car. As Ted closes the car's door, I can hear him mumble a 'This time he didn't glare, that's an improvement." I chuckle and take the passenger's sit, in the front.

The ride to the hotel where we would be staying for the next week, and where the wedding would occur, was filled with small talk about the weather and the food the hotel served i the buffet.

When we arrive, Eddie is waiting in the entrance lobby. I almost find it hard to tell it is him, who stands in front of me. When Eddie left, eventhough he was 18 by the time, he looked like he was still in the middle of puberty (and he probably was, judging by the way he looks now). Ted and Eddie are almost identical, with their almost white blonde hair and Brown eyes. I, on the other hand, have inheritated the looks from my father, or so Ted says, since I can't remember the way he looked like that well. When I think of my father, I think of the cookies he used to sneak for us, I think of him teaching me how to play the piano. sometimes I remembre him yelling at my mother, while she screamed back at us, although I try to ignore those memories the best I can.

So, when Eddie comes up to me and hugs me, I'm about to pry him off me and beat him up, not realizing it's him. But, when I see Ted's chilled expression I realize that's him.

When Eddie pulls away from me, Ted approaches us, howlimg excitedly and declaring loudly that the Mellark brothers are reunited, while launching his fists in the air. I laugh at his stupidity, but turn serious almost immediatly, realizing that now that we are all here, I'll have to tell them about mother's death.

"Guys, there's something seriou I need to tell you." I say quietly, trying not to show too much grief in my expression.

"Later, Peeta! I want you to meet Lizzie first. Plus, I'm sure you're all starving. I know I am!" Ted interrupts me, somehow frustrating me, for I don't know for more how long I can carry the weight of not being sincere with my brothers.

"I could totally eat a horse." Eddie agrees lamely, as they both walk to the dining hall where there is a buffet. Haymitch who has just checked in tells me, Katniss and Gale, to go ahead with them, while he takes the luggage to our room.

While we're walking lowers himself, since he's so much taller then me, so that I can hear the question he's whispering me 'When are you gonna tell them?', which I answer with a quiet 'Later'. Gale is aware of my intentions to tell my brothers about everything, since it was him the first person I ever spoke about that to, and it was him who convinced me to tell them.

Lizzie, Ted's fiancé is beautifull, with green eyes and red hair, she's a taller version of Emma Stone. She's nice and smiles during the whole meal, and she's also very talkative. Katniss and her get very along well, since they both share a deep passion for Johnny Depp's movies. Haymitch seats next to me, sending pointed looks to Ted, who is dead set on trying to make him like him, while Eddie keeps making jokes with Gale. Just now I notice, that they both share the trait of making obnoxious comments and jokes about everyone and everything around them. I simply stand there, in my place, holding Katniss's hand under the table, while feeling the more complete I've ever felt before, for , now, I have the family I always wanted as a child. Because, even if the people in this table are obnoxious and somewhat quirky, they're the best I couldn't have dreamed of.
