(6). Rescuing And Recovering

Lara's POV:

I woke up as rain made contact with my face, it was freezing, the adrenaline had gone away and I was in so much pain. "Maya!" I screamed as my chest tensed up, I hadn't taken my medication yet, for my heart. "Help!" I coughed desperately, I heard someone coming towards me. "Lara, it's Maya, are you okay?" She asked as my chest hurt and my breathing harshened.

"What happened?" I questioned weakly blinking my eyes, she sighed, "I lost control, the breaks just went and we crashed into the side. I tried to warn you but I heard you scream and fall." She cried stroking my head. "It hurts." I whimpered as she nodded, "What does?" She asked as I struggled to stay awake. "Chest, I didn't have my meds. Ribs, head." I groaned.

"Stay with me Lara, don't give up on me now. Listen to me, you are so strong, so keep fighting, don't let it end yet. Live your story and show everyone how strong you are Lara Dean. I'll be back in a minute, I'm going to try to radio for help." She explained, I felt liquid running down my legs. "Mhm.." I groaned in pain, "What, you're bleeding." She stated, lifting my top up.

"Shit!" She gasped, my eyes fluttered open and I saw what she was upset about, there was a metal pole inside me, impaling me, a part of the aid car doors. "It hurts." I screamed begging it to stop, Maya ran off and grabbed my turnout, putting it over me, she used her radio. "This is aid car 19 to dispatch. We've crashed, firefighter down, I repeat firefighter down."

"Sending help to your location Aid 19." The communicator replied, Maya nodded looking at me. "Help is coming." "Tell Jack I love him, okay. Tell Trav and Vic I love them. Please, I love you all." I sobbed as she shook her head. "No! No no no, you tell them that yourself, you're not quitting on me now. Not now, not ever! Don't you dare give up on me!" She screamed.

"I love you, I'm sorry." I whispered as I couldn't breathe anymore, my head was foggy and I fell asleep, into the darkness. It hurt, my ribs, my chest, my head, I slipped away, on the cold ground, unconscious begging to be found. It was always me hurt. I heard screaming, I felt pressure, then nothing at all, just pain.

Maya's POV:

We crashed, the fucking aid car crashed. I was driving and the breaks stopped working, I swerved trying to avoid something lying in the middle of the road and we were heading into the wall and trees. I warned Lara but I heard a thud, screams and slamming, we stopped moving, I jumped out and ran to the back.

The doors were open, blood was on the floor, Katie was awake just shocked. "Katie, where's Lara?" I begged she shakily lifted an arm and pointed to the open doors. She fell out. Quickly, I assessed Katie before running to Lara. It felt like my heart was ripped out out my chest, she was my friend, and I maybe wanted more. I loved her. She didn't know.

I ran to her, I explained what happened, I couldn't move her incase something happened. She hadn't taken her heart meds yet and she said it hurts. Her eyes fluttered open and closed, she was bleeding, we were in a pool of her blood. I lifted her top and saw a piece of the door in her stomach, impaling her.

Instantly, I put my hands gently over the wound and wrapped around the metal, holding pressure and keeping it still. She was gasping for air and coughing, little drops of blood forming at the end of her lips. Tears fell from both her eyes, I communicated with dispatch, they were on their way. It felt like she was saying goodbye like she was giving up.

"No.. Stay with me!" I sobbed as her eyes closed and her chest stilled. "SHIT! I NEED HELP! LARA! Don't you fucking dare give up on me, not here, not now, not ever!" Pushing my hands together, I started CPR and rescue breaths. I heard sirens, help was coming, I was covered in her blood, I kept doing CPR, no response.

"Maya!?" Jack questioned as he saw my tear stained face, he looked down and his face drained of colour, "No.." He whispered weakly, his legs threatening to buckle. "Jack. What is it?" Travis asked coming over, he saw me, my hands, my face, and then her still body. "How long have you been going?" He asked me tears threatening to spill. "5 minutes or so."

"Switch with me, 1 2 3. Do the amboo bag. Go!" Travis said as we switched, I did the bag, we got the portable monitor connected to her and charged the paddles. "Shocking! Clear! Charge to 200! Clear! Again! Lara don't you fucking dare give up on us now, not yet, not here, or never, stay strong and fight!" Vic screamed as we got a c-collar and back board on.

We all sighed a breath of relief as we saw a spike in her heart rate monitor, "It's small but it's there, faint pulse. Low oxygen rates." I read gratefully, Miller came over to me and pulled me up, "Go get checked out by warren, he's with your patient, she's okay. I'll help Lara." He smiled and I nodded headed towards the other aid car.

"Bishop? How are you standing, you're covered in blood?" He questioned shocked, I shook my head. "It's Lara's, she's bad Ben, I had to do CPR for 5 minutes before you got here, she hasn't had her heart meds so that's causing trouble as well as her injuries from the crash. I'm okay, my head hurts a little bit and my shoulders sore." I listed off.

"How's Katie?" I asked and he took me towards her and sat me in the back as he took my vitals. "Heart rate 89, Blood pressure 110/80, Sats 97%. It looks like you're okay, just a few cuts and bruises but get checked out fully at the hospital. Katie is okay, shaken up, she said Lara flew out the back of the doors, breaking through and she heard a clonk." Ben told me

"They're taking Katie to Grey Sloan now, I'm going to go help the others with Lara before we hand her over to the paramedics, come with me." He instructed me, calming my nerves a small bit. "She seems stable for now." Vic told me as I came over, she looked as destroyed as me. Travis, Jack and Dean were working on Lara.

They were holding pressure and checking vitals. "Ready to lift her?" Ben asked as we both helped carry her onto the gurney. "Hi guys, I can take 3 in with me. We'll both be in the front, 2 of you can work on her and 1 can be the visitor." They told us. Jack, Travis and Vic stood up, but Vic sat back down. "Maya you go, you need checking out too." She told me.

"We'll meet you there." They called as we climbed in. They put the sirens on and I held her hand as Travis and Jack tried to work on her as best as they could. We were almost at the hospital when her monitors blared, she started shaking and her muscles started to clench and unclench, spasming, she was seizing, badly.

"2mgs of diazepam!" Travis called pushing the meds through the needle into her blood stream. Her seizure, didn't subside, it kept getting actively worse. "What's going on? Why is she seizing? Is she epileptic?" Scared, I kept bombarding them with questions. "This has never happened before." Travis said, Jack was pushing meds as her seizure started to pass.

"We're here." I said, pushing the doors open, we were met with Bailey, Wilson, Lincoln, Shepherd, DeLuca, Altman and Hunt with Helm and Schmitt. "Lara Dean, 25 years old, in an aid car crash, got thrown onto the road, obvious head injury, impaled in the stomach, pre-existing heart condition, complained of rib pain, coded once on scene and seized on route." Jack listed off as we handed her over.

"Alright, guys, we've got her." Bailey told us with a small smile before they rushed off. "Trauma Room 2!" Hunt bellowed as they wheeled her gurney inside, we stood outside the window. She had to be okay. "She'll be okay, right?" Jack asked and I nodded gently, begging it to be true. "I'll let the others know we're here." Travis whispered walking away on the phone.

Jo's POV:

We were told there was a trauma incoming, it needed trauma surgeons, neuro surgeons, cardio surgeons and general, something bad must have happened, I'd been paged as well as schmitt, helm and DeLuca, they needed 2 residents and 2 interns as well as 5 attendings. We waited outside in the bay, as we opened the doors, the firefighters came out.

It was Lara, she was intubated, pale, covered in blood and her vitals were low. "BP 70/45, Hypotensive, SATS 82%, HR 147, Tachycardic." Helm read off the monitor, making notes in her chart. "Let's do a neuro check first, then CT scan and x-ray." Bailey ordered as everyone rushed around. "What blood type is she?" Owen asked, making everyone stop.

"Bishop, do you know her blood type?" I asked exiting the room, she shook her head, but Travis walked in and sighed. "O negative." I rushed in the trauma room again, to be greeted with Lara seizing and the monitors blaring. "O NEG!" I yelled as Schmitt rushed to get it, she was losing blood fast from the impalement.

"2mgs Diazepam!" Amelia ordered pushing the medication, as the seizure subsided we did her neuro check. "Pupils reactive, No obvious neuro deficits, get a CT, page me with the results or if she seizes again." She told Bailey, who nodded as Amelia left the room. "Have we got the portable x-ray?" DeLuca asked as Lincoln came in with it.

We rolled her on her side and positioned to get every angle needed, we pulled our protective vests on and waited. "Done." Altman sighed, pushing it out the way. "4 Broken ribs, Dislocated shoulder, Dislocated Patella, Book an MRI as well as that CT, from the way she landed and fell, there could be a spinal injury." Linc read looking at the scans.

"Someone page doctor Kim! We need to reset this knee and shoulder!" Link screamed, I ran to the desk to get him paged to trauma 2. After a few minutes, he burst in, "Here. Resets?" He asked, Linc nodded as they got in position to do the knee first, "3. 2. 1." They counted as Niko popped it in, "3. 2. 1." The did again as They popped the shoulder back in the socket.

"Page when you have the MRI results." They left, "Let's get this out." Hunt and Altman spoke at the same time, Hunt had his hands wrapped steadily at the base as Altman slowly pulled it out. "Pack it until we can get an OR." Bailey told them, which is what they did with Gauze and sheets. After booking the OR, for us at 3pm in OR4, Bailey walked back in with instructions.

"Wilson, DeLuca, take her up to CT and MRI, page Shepherd, Lincoln and I with the results." Bailey commanded as she, Hunt and Altman left. DeLuca and I pushed the bed into the lift and up to radiology. Waiting for an hour, Lara's portable monitor started going off again. "Heart Rates plummeting." Helm told us as we got to work.

"She's going to flatline." Schmitt warned as the monitors spikes dropped. "Performing CPR, Deluca bag her, Helm grab the paddles, Schmitt get us to the front of the queue!" I yelled, climbing onto the bed, straddling her and applying CPR. "Come on Lara, don't quit on me, not yet, live your life, you don't let him win." I cried at her whilst starting her heart.

"Page Altman say she coded again, I think somethings going on with her heart again." DeLuca instructed as Helm came back with the paddles, she nodded, handed them over and rushed off again. Taking the paddles into my hands, I applied the pads, connected it to the monitor, charged to 150. "150! CLEAR! SHOCKING!" I bellowed.

Trying my best to get her back it felt useless. "Jo! It's been 15 minutes! She's gone! Admit it, call the time of death!" Andrew ordered me, I would not give up on her, not yet. "She is one of my friends! I'm helping her leave her abusive shitty husband! I will not quit! I am your senior resident! I will not call until I feel we have done everything we can!" I sobbed.

Pushing through my pain, I noticed Andrew walked off, "Come on Lara!" Begging her to breathe again. "Don't give in!" "Wilson!" Bailey bellowed, I sighed, Andrew got her. "How long has it been?" She asked as she approached the bed. "17 minutes." I gasped getting tired, "Shocking, 200! CLEAR!" I tried again, Bailey shook her head.

"Nothing." She said sadly, looking me in the eyes, "Jo, I know she's your friend let her go, you'll fry her heart." Bailey explained gently. "I have to get her back! Chief she's your husbands best friend! How can you tell him his friend isn't coming back and we didn't try everything! Give me 2 more chances please!" I sobbed begging for this.

"DeLuca do the bag. Wilson switch with me, you're getting tired, that's no use to Lara." Bailey smiled and I nodded, jumping of the bed as she climbed on. "Dean, not now, you do not give up on us yet! On Miller, On Bishop, On Montgomery, On Hughes, On Gibson. Live for them. For your family, for us." She ranted taking over compressions.

"Charge to 250!" Bailey commanded, I charged the paddles and cleared, she shocked her, going back to CPR. "Come on" I whispered staring at the monitor, taking her pulse. "I've got one! It's faint!" I cried in relief as the monitor picked up a spike. "Heart rates rising, Blood pressures rising." Deluca read.

Bailey nodded as Altman came over with Helm. "How long was she down?" Teddy asked, I looked down and held back my tears. "25 minutes." Teddy nodded, "In the surgery, I'll look at her heart, it could be from the impact, could have been knocked by the metal. Page shepherd, she may have been down too long." Teddy sadly looked at me holding my shoulder.

We went into the CT room and got her prepped, Andrew and I stood behind the screens with the Interns outside the door. "I'm here, you paged?" She asked, "Had another seizure, then coded down for 25 minutes. Lincoln said to get an MRI to look for spinal injuries, we're heading there after, then they're doing surgery." I explained she nodded, looking at the scans.

"Looks okay, no bleeds, no tumors. Page Avery to fix up her facial lacs." She told me as I nodded, she stayed with us to take her up to MRI. "Looks clear, When she wakes up page me and I'll do a quick check on her motor reflexes. I'll book an EEG to see if its epilepsy caused by the impact." Shepherd smiled leaving to go to surgery.

We headed to the OR, Helm and DeLuca were scrubbing in, I was going to the clinic to help out and then they'd page me to her room. "Take care of her." I told them, they nodded smiling gently. I went to the waiting room and saw Travis, Victoria, Maya, Ben and Jack. "Heyguys, I asn't allowed in surgery because we're close friends so I'm keeping you company ok?" I asked.

They nodded, all looking tired and destroyed. "Maya, did you get checked out?" Vic asked and she shook her head, she looked tired, head in hands. "I can do a quick once over and fix your cuts so theres barely even a scar. If you like?" I offered, she accepted, I went to get the suture kit and some gloves. "Do you have a headache?" She nodded slightly.

"So you were driving, did you hit your head on the steering wheel or something? I looked at your arm briefly, it looks a bit bruised, I can get my friend from Ortho to have a look?" She shook her head, Ben came over. "Bishop, you can't help her if you're hurt, just get a simple look of your shoulder and it'll be done." Sighing slightly, she nodded tears brimming.

Paging Dr Atticus Lincoln, I sat with them, waiting for new, any news, just hoping she was okay, she survived thats all we needed all we wanted to hear. "Jo, you paged me to the waiting room?" He questioned walking in, his eyes widened growing sad as he saw me near tears, "Maya's hurt her arm in the crash but she doesn't want to leave incase we hear about Lara." I spoke softly.

Nodding, he got up and grabbed the blood pressure cuff and started examining her and taking her vitals. "Looks like a few bruises and small dislocation to your wrist, I can set it in here, but without pain killers it's going to hurt." Linc explained Maya simply nodded, Vic took her good hand and squeezed it tightly. "3,2." He counted, she counted along and screamed.

He popped it in, "But, you went on 2!" She cried, tears surfacing from pain and exhaustion, "Distracted you, it hurts more if you're expecting it." I explained, she nodded as he got the materials to cast it, "It looks like you may have a minor concussion but that's normal, just if you don't feel well let someone know." He finished after wrapping her wrist and walked off.

Patting my shoulder, we were alone again, it had been hours, hours of pacing the waiting room, I was going insane, now I know what it feels like. "Something must have gone wrong for it too take this long, right?" Maya asked as Ben arrived, "Jo, go to the gallery, see what's happening, I'll stay here." He stated hugging Maya, I nodded running off to OR4.

"What's taking so long?" I asked into the intercom, Hunt looked up with sorry eyes, "Coded twice, Altman looked at her heart, no obvious injuries." Nodding sadly, I walked back out, "We're done now." He called, I raced down to meet them, I wheeled her bed to the hospital room and went to get the others.

Running back to the waiting room, I saw Dean Miller, Vic Hughes, Ben Warren, Travis Montgomery, Maya Bishop and Jack Gibson waiting. "She's out of surgery, wait for the surgeons to come talk to us then we can see her." Explaining to them, they nodded, looking relieved that she was alive, she was here.

Staring into the distance, I watched Dr Altman and Dr Hunt coming over to us, I stood up and so did the others, Ben started shaking Maya awake. "Mhmurgh?" She mumbled tired, "The doctors are here." Jack groaned as we all stood up. "She coded twice in surgery, we think it's because of her heart condition. We cleaned her wound and sutured it. On bed rest for a week." They said.
