twelve.
Ollie woke up a few hours later, her arms wrapped around the pillow that had formerly separated her and Buck and his temporary side of the bed empty. She blinked the sleep out of her eyes as she slowly returned back to the land of the living, letting out a soft groan as her arms pushed out in a stretch. As she awakened, her ears honed in on the familiar sound of talking, fear immediately taking over her body.
Quicker than probably recommended by her doctor, she flipped off the bed onto her feet, quickly dragging her ankle boot behind her as she moved as fast she could out of her bedroom. Her eyes widened when she caught sight of Buck and Ellis at the kitchen island, the former leaning on his elbows and smiling while Ellis hustled her way around the kitchen.
Her roommate had gotten home from her shift a while ago, Ollie noted. Ellis' brunette hair was falling loose over her shoulders, unruly from an entire 24-hour shift of being in a ponytail, and she had changed out of her blue scrubs into some sweatpants and a larger t-shirt. She looked angelic, bathed in the white light of the kitchen, and panic overtook when she realized that maybe Buck thought the same thing.
Body moving before she could think, she shuffled her way into the kitchen, running her hand through her hair as Ellis and Evan's eyes turned to her.
"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty." Ellis chirped, mischeviously grinning at Ollie as she looked between her and Buck. "Buck and I were just talking about you."
"Shut the fuck up." Ollie groaned, still too sluggish to want to deal with her roommate's Cupid tendencies.
Buck chuckled, eyes following her as she walked around him to sit on the barstool next to him. "How'd you sleep?" He asked, his voice soft.
She laid her head down on the island, shutting her eyes tightly. "Not enough and yet too much. I know the doctor said rest was good for me, but I don't think it's normal for a human to sleep as much as I have the past business week." Her head turned, cheek pressing against the cool granite countertops as she looked up at him.
He smiled back at her, shaking his head. "You're just not used to getting your eight hours everytime you close your eyes." He reminded her, reaching over to gently tap his fingers against her knee. "Don't get too used to it, you'll be back to fifteen to forty-five minute naps before you know it."
"I'm impatiently waiting." Ollie deadpanned, sitting back up and looking at Ellis, who was busying herself at a pot on the stove. "How was your shift, El?"
Ellis whipped around like she had been waiting for Ollie to include her the entire time, hair flying in a way that was definitely not sanitary for whatever she was cooking. "Amazing! I got to help a lady give birth!" She squeaked, hands waving in front of her as she spoke. "Usually I'd be upset that I wasn't scrubbing in on a huge surgery, but it was absolutely fantastic. The baby was so cute, his mom named him Liam."
Ollie's lips pulled into a big grin at her friend's excitement, nodding. "Sounds like you had a blast. Wanna celebrate with a dirty Shirley?" She cooed, getting up slowly and making her way to the refrigerator. Pulling the freezer open, she grabbed their trusty bottle of vodka, turning and raising her brows at Ellis, who just nodded excitedly.
'The best woman I know." Ellis grinned, before gesturing towards Buck. "By the way, I asked him to stay for dinner." She admitted, before setting the rubber spoon in her hand down. "We're having pasta! And I'm going to the bathroom before you kill me." Her hand raised to her mouth so that she could blow Ollie a kiss, giggling playfully as she turned and skipped out of the kitchen.
"She's a mess." Ollie muttered as she grabbed two glasses, turning to face Buck. "Do you want a dirty Shirley, Buckley?"
Buck raised a hand to stop her from grabbing another glass, shaking his head. "No, thank you." He smiled, his fingers intertwining into his own as he watched her pour into the glasses. "Hey, I'm sorry about just being thrown on you earlier. I guess Bobby spilled the beans to Athena about our... uh, situation and made assumptions for himself. And sorry for taking half of your bed. And asking you to accompany me." He nervously fidgeted, looking down at his hands.
Her brow raised, not turning to look back at him as she focused on her pours. "You've talked to Cap about me? And us?" She asked, her question slightly tight, like a cobra poised to strike on an unsuspecting victim.
"Uhm... yeah. I'm sorry about that, too. He's... he's kinda the guy I go to with everything, you know?" He sounded almost sheepish, and she could hear the bashfulness laced into his tone.
With a sigh, Ollie decided to let it go. She had told Eddie and Ellis all about it, so she assumed he had a pass to tell one other person. Plus, him getting dropped off at her apartment and sleeping in her bed had given her the best sleep of her life — not that she'd tell him that. "It's okay. I forgive you." Twirling the combined liquid in her cup with a straw, she brought it to her lips just as she turned around, leaning her back against the counter.
Evan's eyebrows raised in surprise, lips tugging at the corner. "You concede already?"
"I'm surprised you know the word concede." She retorted, wrinkling her nose at him just as Ellis stepped back into the kitchen, announcing her arrival with a flamboyant hand motion and declaring that it was officially time for dinner.
By the time Ellis, Ollie and Evan were done with dinner (a lovely pasta and salad), the girls had devoured three Dirty Shirleys each. Needless to say, they were a little bit tipsy, made obvious by the way both were laughing loudly and practically reaching across the counter when the other said something shocking or relatable.
Ellis pointed at Buck with the hand holding her glass, leaning in his direction.. "Did you know my actual name is London?" She asked, a smile pulling at her lips. "London Summer Finch. Ellis is a nickname. Get it? My initials. L-S. Ellis."
The man's lips tilted up into an amused smile, slightly shaking his head. "No, I did not. But I like the name London."
"I wouldn't even recognize myself if you called me London." She snorted, before her head suddenly whipped around, hand reaching across the island to grab Ollie's arm. "Dude! We should watch Grease!"
Ollie's lips parted into an 'O' shape, her own hand laying on Ellis. "You are the smartest girl I know, you know." She whispered dramatically before looking over at Evan, her lips a sloppy smile. "Do you wanna stay and watch Grease?"
Evan stared at her for a second, a noticeably dreamy looking in his eyes before he nodded. "Of course, I do."
"Amazing! But you need a completely sober friend," she noted, pulling her phone out of her back pocket, "so I'm calling Eddie." She declared, fingers tapping at her phone.
Buck laughed, shaking his head. "He has Christopher, Olivia, he can't just leave the house."
She snorted, looking over her phone at the man taking up space on her barstool. "And he has Carla, who you introduced to him. I'll pay for her time tonight. I miss him." She grumbled, pressing the call button on her screen and pulling the phone to her ear as she stepped away from Evan. "Esterrr Diaz."
"Oliver." Eddie's voice traveled through the phone, the sound of rustling heard in the background. "How can I help you?"
"Can you come over?" She asked sweetly, rocking on her feet even though he couldn't see her. "Ellis and I are a little bit tipsy and Buck's over and he needs a sober friend." Her eyes flickered over to watch as her roommate grabbed Buck's wrist, pulling him off of the barstool and into the living room, barking instructions at him. "I'll pay for Carla to come watch Christopher, but I'd really like you to be here."
The silence on the other phone was deafening for a moment, before a large sigh flooded out of the speaker. "Alcohol makes you too sweet, Ollie. I'll be over shortly. Tell Buck to hang in there," was what he ended the phone call with.
A soft laugh left her lips as she turned back around, peering through the doorway to watch her friends hustle around her apartment. Ellis had opened their spare closet, pulling out their intense collection of blankets from the top shelf and tossing them at Buck, who struggled to grab them all in the unmethodical way the girl was throwing them but was laughing all the same.
Gazing upon the moment from an outside view made her heart grow in her chest. Walking into the 118 her first day, seeing Evan for the first time in a decade, had been a struggle. She had wanted him as far away as possible, she didn't want to see his face again, she wanted to continue to forget him the way she had been trying since the day she left. But glancing at him now, all bright smiles and loud laughs as he hung out with her tipsy roommate with not a single care in the world, she couldn't help but come to the realization that she had been so wrong. So wrong to not want him close.
Evan Buckley had crawled his way into her system during high school and she never successfully flushed him out.
The stunning realization was brushed away when he turned around to suddenly face her, teeth glinting at her with how hard he was smiling. 'Gonna help?' He mouthed, sassily placing a hand on his hip and yet his face lighting up when she finally moved from her spot to join him in the living room.
By the time Eddie rapped her fingers against her front door and let himself in, the trio had spread Ollie and Ellis' blankets across the entire couch, comfortably arranging their pillows so that everyone could find a spot and snuggle into it. He was immediately handed a glass of water by a rosy-cheeked Ellis before he was ushered to sit down next to Ollie with a warning that the show would be starting soon.
"I think she likes you." Ollie whispered to Eddie, leaning closer to him with a sneaky grin on her face.
He looked at her while his eyes slowly widened, chuckling softly. "I thought you told me I couldn't flirt with your roommate."
Her eyes narrowed at him dangerously, a finger pointing at him. "You won't flirt with her until she flirts with you."
"Can't say I'll even do that, Oliver." He laughed, patting her knee reassuringly before settling back on the couch.
In response, Ollie let out a soft huff, leaning away from Eddie to move closer to Buck, feeling oddly talkative. "You do know Ellis and I are going to perform every single song off of this movie, right?" She asked, leaning her cheek against the back of the couch as she looked up at him.
Evan's eyes turned from watching Ellis fumble with the TV remote to glance down at her, cerulean eyes lighting up in amusement. "I sure hope so. Wouldn't be fun without it." He responded, laying his arm over the back of the couch as he slouched a bit into the pillows behind him.
The proximity of them now that he had moved his arm behind her made a dark blush heat up on her ears, head turning to get away from his eyes on her despite the rest of her body not moving. She fought the urge to lean further and lay her head on him, not drunk enough to be too crazy with her actions like she was the other night. She pushed the thought out of her head just as Ellis finally got the movie to work, plopping down between Eddie and Ollie on the couch and pulling her knees up to her chin.
Another two Shirleys, multiple songs and an hour later, Ollie could feel her eyes drooping as she attempted to continue watching her movie. Ellis has already fallen asleep fifteen minutes before, her head on Ollie's shoulder, and her soft snores in her ear made her own body want to join her in dreamworld. Once her head finally fell, brushing against Buck's shoulder on the way down, she finally sat up, yawning softly.
"You ready for bed, Oliver?" Eddie chuckled from the end of the couch, fully reclined in a corner of it, looking surprisingly more awake and attentive than she thought he would be after a day-long shift and being drugged with LSD.
She nodded silently, rubbing at her eyes. Another large yawn pushed through her lips as she gestured to Ellis. "Do you think you could help her get to bed? She's disorientated enough when sober and wide awake." She noted, glancing up at Eddie.
Sitting up, he set his water cup on the coffee table as he nodded. "Yeah, I got her. You get to bed, Ollie. Buck and I can let ourselves out." He noted, a hand reaching out to gently touch her shoulder and pull her forward so he could place a parting kiss in the air next to her cheek. Stepping away, he leaned down to slightly nudge Ellis' leg, waking her up before lifting her in his arms to carry her towards her room.
Ollie pushed her hands through her hair as she looked around at the glasses on her coffee table, sighing as she reached down to grab them. Her hand wrapped around one before a hand was placed on her elbow, causing her to look up. "Hm?"
"Leave them, Olivia. You need to get some sleep." Evan murmured, grabbing the cup and setting it back down, hands grabbing her elbows to turn her around and start nudging her towards her bedroom. "I'll pick these up. Let's get you to bed."
She didn't have the energy to fight, nodding as she started shuffling her way towards her room, not even bothered by the fact that she could feel Buck following closely behind her. Once she made it through the door, she immediately pulled off her hoodie, climbing into bed with a soft, sleepy groan. After she had rolled over on her back, she gave Buck a cheeky grin. "Deja vu?"
He laughed, shaking his head as he swatted at her legs until she lifted them, grabbing her duvet and pulling it over her body. "Except you're the one in bed, and you get the bed all to yourself."' He went along, brushing his hand along the duvet as he smoothed it out.
The idea of being in her bed by herself after having a taste of sleeping in the same space as him was already giving her withdrawals. Her smile faltered a bit before she rolled over, hand reaching out to gently grab his, thumb brushing over his fingers. "Thank you, Buck."
Evan's face visibly reflected shock, a nervous chuckle leaving his lips as he tilted his head at her. "For what?"
"For being you. You make me feel like me." She muttered, adding to her small list of quiet admissions made in the dark. Her eyes fluttered shut as she enjoyed the feeling of his hand in hers, memorizing the calluses on his fingers and committing them to memory.
In response, Evan gave her nothing but silence, although he didn't pull his hand away from hers. The warmth stayed there until she had mostly drifted off, slipping out of her reach just as she finally succumbed to slumber.
