Chapter Twenty-Four: The Blood of the Raven

"Geez, this rain just isn't letting up!" Jason moaned, his voice only just audible above the pounding of the rain. The storm had picked up while Mitch and Jason were walking the long way back home, and the pelting rain was nearly as bad as it had been when Mitch had been flying earlier that night, if not worse. There was a lack of lightning, but they could still hear it booming in the distance.

Mitch nodded, his hood pulled over his head in an (unsuccessful) attempt to keep himself at least a little dry, Jason having done the same thing. Every part of him wanted to take off his hoodie, which was completely soaked, and keeping his broken wing pinned painfully against his back. He had tried to wrap it around his waist as he did with his other wing, but the broken wing was unable to bend that way without sending pain all throughout his back. He had to deal with it being laying half-closed, which made his hoodie look a little... strange over him. Mitch just ended up rolling with it, as he was desperate on finding Jason as soon as possible.

Mitch sighed. "Well, it was your idea on taking the long way back home Jason."

Jason shot Mitch an annoyed look, but kept quiet. Jason had suggested on taking the longer route back to the house so that he would have more time to think about what to say to the others when they arrived back home, especially to Ian. Mitch didn't object to the idea. He needed to think about the same thing.

However, they didn't expect the rain to start pouring so quickly. It was only minutes before the sprinkling droplets became a downpour, and both Jason and Mitch were absolutely drenched. Mitch was trying to keep the memory of the lightning strike out of his mind as he and Jason walked, but he couldn't help but flinch or freeze up for a moment whenever they heard a clap of thunder or saw a flash of lightning. Mitch tried to keep his nervousness as unnoticeable as possible, but he already knew that Jason was fully aware of it.

"What time is it anyways?" Mitch asked, adjusting his hood.

Jason shrugged, before checking the watch around his wrist. "Damn, it's almost three o' clock already?!? The others are probably freaking out right now!"

"No, I don't think so." Mitch replied, shaking his head. "I told Ian and Jerome to handle damage control while I left to find you. They probably fell asleep already. Well..." Mitch added, biting his lip, "Maybe Ian or Jerome are still awake."

Jason nodded. "Alright then, that makes things less... complicated, I guess."

Mitch didn't reply, instead focusing on the peaceful pitter-patter of the rain. He had begun to feel the strange feeling in the back of his head that he had come to have dreaded, the feeling that served as his warnings. Mitch looked around for anything out of place around them, but he couldn't see anything. Mitch bit the bottom of his lip. The feeling was very faint, and it faded in only seconds, but Mitch was still sure that it was there.

"Mitch, are you okay?" Jason asked, worry in his tone.

Mitch was snapped out of his thoughts, realizing that Jason had walked quite a bit ahead of him. Mitch silently nodded his head, and walked a bit faster to catch up with his friend.

Mitch wasn't sure why the feeling had stricken him then, but nothing was appearing to happen, so Mitch quickly pushed the thought out of his mind and caught up with Jason.

Nothing is going to happen Mitch, he thought to himself, realizing that the rain was further intensifying, falling faster and harder. Nothing is going on here, and I'll be with Jason regardless if something bad did happen to either of us. Everyone else is at home too, so they'll be fine.

What's the worst that could happen?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where are they?!? Where could they be?!?!?

Ian huffed as he ran down the street, his thoughts racing as his sneakers splashed on the sidewalk underneath him as he ran.

He shivered, the cold rain stinging against his skin. He regretted not grabbing a jacket or a hoodie before he ran out of the house, but he hadn't even thought about it. He didn't even know where he exactly was. He tried to keep track of where he was going, but the rain had begun to fall so hard that Ian could hardly see a few yards past his face, making it hard to even know where he was going.

He had tried to call Jason's cell phone, but there was no answer. He had called to more times to be safe, but there was no answer either times. Ian assumed that Jason had left his phone at home at that point. Ian assumed that Mitch probably did as well, but Ian called him a few times as well, just to be safe. No answer.

Ian didn't know how long he had been running for, but he figured it had been a while, as he could feel a pain in his chest and in his legs. Ian could only run a bit farther until he stopped to catch his breath, taking deep breaths.

He took out his phone to check the time, using a hand to cover the screen as he turned it on. 3:32... It's been a few hours since Mitch left to find Jason... Did something happen to them?

Ian, remembering both the warning from Mitch's dream and the information that he had discovered on his own, quickly walked down the sidewalk, having not quite yet recovered the stamina he needed to run again.

Ian walked as fast as he could manage, ignoring the pain in his legs, a fierce and determined look on his face as he continued.

Ian looked around him, despite the vision-obscuring rain, hoping to at least see any sign of his two friends. He saw nothing.

A feeling of dread came over him, fear for his friends and panic hazing most of his rational thinking. His gaze was constantly flickering to his right and left, desperately wishing for one of his friends to appear out of nowhere and reassure him that everything was going to be okay.

But Ian knew what no one else knew.

He knew that everything was not okay.

Ian was about to start running again when something caught his eye, directly in front of him. It was a light, in the vague shape of a person. Ian, narrowing his eyes, walked toward it, Ian could make out just that it wasn't just any normal light.

The light was golden.

Ian felt his heart skip a beat, remembering what Mitch had told him about his dream. The golden light was always there, the blue figure usually in tow. Ian knew this should worry him, but it instead drove him onward. Ian needed answers, to protect his friends. If Ian could do anything to protect his friends, he would give anything to do so, no matter what happened to him.

Ian, realizing this, continued forward, and the closer he came to the light, the more distinct it became in the pouring rain.

He soon realized that it wasn't a light, but a person. She appeared to be about 15, with straight blond hair that went a bit past her shoulders, and was wearing a long-sleeved pale (almost white) green shirt and white-gray leggings, with black boots. She was surrounded in a bright golden light, like an aura, and when she turned her head to the side, Ian could catch a glimpse of a similar color in her eyes, which were a bright golden-amber color. She appeared to be looking for something, much like Ian was a moment ago. She had her back to him, not noticing his presence. The appeared to be completely dry, as if the rain were going right through her, and as a loud clap of thunder rumbled through the air, she didn't even flinch.

Ian's eyes widened in realization. "Weiss?" Ian said, disbelief lacing his voice.

Weiss jumped in surprise, and she turned to face Ian, clearly not expecting for anyone to notice her. She had a look of confusion on her face, but as soon as she realized that it was Ian standing behind her, a look of shock appeared briefly on her face before being replaced with one of panic. "No..." she said quietly, Ian barely hearing her over the rain. "No one is supposed to see me, just h-him!" She took a step backwards, before turning and bolting down the sidewalk, the light making her glow in the rain.

"No, wait!" Ian said reaching out for her with one hand, before drawing it back and chasing after her. He ran as fast as he could, and it seemed that Weiss was doing the same, as Ian could only just see the golden light through the pelting rain. Sometimes Weiss would make a sharp turn to the right or the left, forcing Ian to do the same, making him slide a bit on the wet concrete.

Ian was aware that Weiss was clearly trying to lose him, as he noticed that sometimes he would follow her onto grass, or onto the street, or back onto the sidewalk. At least, this is what Ian guessed, as he could hardly even see where he was going. He just blindly followed the light.

He don't know how long the chase had continued for, but Ian stepped onto the street, running as fast as they both could on the asphalt. "Weiss!" Ian called out, "I just want to talk to you!"

That's when the golden light suddenly disappeared in the rain, and Ian stopped running, looking around him with a flustered look on his face. Where did she go...? Ian thought to himself. "Weiss?" He called out, an unsure tone in his voice.

Ian stood there for a moment, before letting out a sigh. He had lost her. His vision clouded for a moment, and himself get lost in his own thoughts as he realized that he had most likely lost one of his only opportunities to protect whoever Mitch's dreams had claimed was destined to die.

Ian was suddenly yanked out of his thoughts the sound of Weiss calling out to him.

"Ian! Watch out!"

Ian rose an eyebrow, and suddenly he heard the sound of something screeching and squealing to his left.

His head quickly tuned to his left, his blue eyes widening as he noticed headlights approaching him at a seemingly blinding speed.

Ian didn't have time to react before he felt an immeasurable pain wash over him, and as his head felt the asphalt, he felt something crack and break, everything becoming black in an instant.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"We have to almost be there dude..." Mitch groaned.

"I think we are...?" Jason said, letting his voice trail off.

The two were soaked to the bone, and were shivering as the rain soaked through their clothes and onto their skin. Mitch scoffed, crossing his arms in an attempt to warm himself up, instead, his clothes squished more water onto his skin.

"My wings are soaked to the bone... literally. They are going to take forever to dry..." Mitch groaned again, Jason rolling his eyes.

The two continued to walk in silence, the thunder and lightning considerably calmer. Mitch was still attentive to anything and everything around them, but he found that he was hardly able to do so through the pelting rain, which obscured his vision a bit.

Mitch continued to walk until he froze up, finding himself unable to move. The strange feeling had returned, and stronger than he had ever felt before, now sending sharp pains through his head. It consumed all of his thoughts and all feeling, and Mitch collapsed onto his knees, holding his hands against his head as if he was about to split in two. He cried out in pain, tears welling up in his eyes as a rush of emotions mixed with the pain racking his mind. He could feel sadness, he could feel disbelief, and he could feel... anguish.

Mitch suddenly realized that none of those emotions were his own. It was as if his mind had wandered into someone else's, as if he were feeling their emotions instead of his own, and with a shocking realization...

Mitch realized that he was feeling their pain as well.

That's why he felt his heart skip a beat when the feeling disappeared without warning, snuffed out like a light.

Even more worrying was that when the last of the feeling and pain disappeared, there was a name in his mind as clear as day.

"...Ian?" Mitch whimpered.

"Ian? Mitch, what are you talking about?!?!? Are you okay?!?!"

Mitch suddenly noticed that Jason was kneeling on the wet sidewalk next to him, a worried and shocked expression on his face.

Mitch didn't hesitate to jump to his feet, and he grabbed Jason's hand to pull him up as well. "Ian...!" Mitch said, panic lacing his tone as his eyes widened in shock and pain. "Jason, something happened to Ian! Something bad, I just..."

Mitch let his voice trailed off as he saw the confused look on Jason's face, and Mitch remembered that he hadn't gotten a chance to explain the weird feelings, or preemptive feelings Mitch would rather say, to him.

Mitch shook his head, pulling Jason by the hand down the sidewalk at speeds he wasn't even aware that he could achieve, his mind already seeming to know exactly where he was going. Mitch used his strength to pull Jason along with him, Jason yelping and trying to tell Mitch to slow down while his feet stumbled on the sidewalk. Mitch didn't even stop to reply, instead speeding down the sidewalk as fast as he could.

Jason suddenly let out a pained cry, and Mitch looked behind him to see that Jason's eyes were closed, and Mitch watched as Jason used his free hand to grab the wrist of the hand that Mitch was holding, gripping it as a look of pain came across his face. Mitch looked back to where he was running, not slowing down at all. He was too afraid.

He finally skidded to a stop in the middle of a street he didn't recognize, and Jason stumbled next to him, almost tripping on the curb as Mitch let go of his hand, which Jason was still holding.

"Mitch, what are you looking...at..." Jason said, his voice trailing off as his gaze followed Mitch's as his ice blue eyes were filled with anguish and disbelief. "No way...no way!" Jason cried out, tears falling down his cheeks.

Mitch didn't reply, a look of shock on his face as he noticed a limp shape lying unmoving in the middle of the road. "No...nonononono!" Mitch said, tears beginning to cascade down his face as he fell onto his knees, his hands once again pressing against the sides of his head.

Mitch's head yanked up, facing the sky as his mouth opened, a wail of anguish echoing in the night air as he screamed.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
