Chapter Eleven: Graves of a Distant Past

"What?" Ian asked with a raised eyebrow as Mitch climbed in his room through the open window. "What problem?"

"I think the others are starting to realize that something is going on with me." Mitch said, gesturing to his wings. "Jerome had tried to come into my room, while my wings were out, and asked if everything was alright with me. He said that the others were worried about me. I'm worried that they'll find out about my wings..."

"Well," Ian said, slamming his window shut. "Your fear is perfectly reasonable, but why did you fly out to my window instead of just walking in here?!?!? Someone might've seen you!"

Mitch sighed. "Yes, Ian, I know, but remember? I gave you my hoodie last night when I took you flying. I forgot to ask for it back. So... Can I have it back so I can stop sneaking around?"

Mitch watched as Ian laughed awkwardly, his face paling a bit. "I... may have left it on the porch...."

"WHAT??!?!?"

"Quiet down Mitch, someone might hear us! They might be loud when their recording, but they may still hear us yelling in here! I just left it on the porch before we came in yesterday. It was a bit wet after you did that trick over the pool. I left it out to dry. I just need to go grab it, just wait in here for a few minutes." Ian said, before running out of the door before Mitch was able to reply.

Mitch sighed, shutting the door behind him and plopping down on top on his bed. Mitch felt uneasy as he tapped his foot on the ground, his wings occasionally twitching behind him. He better hurry up... Mitch thought as he let out a loud sigh.

A few minutes passed, before he heard footsteps from outside of the room, accompanied by whistling to the tune of "Staring at the Sun".

Mitch felt his heart quicken as his wings became stiff behind him. Ty! He thought, panicking. Mitch looked around the room for places to hide, unable to find one. He cursed under his breath as he heard the footsteps stop in front of the door, and he catapulted himself onto the floor, scooting under Ian's bed so that he didn't hit his wings anywhere. As soon as he was safely under, he pulled his wings as close to him as he could without hurting them. But with Mitch's big wingspan, he was forced to pull them in uncomfortably to avoid them poking out from under the bed.

Mitch held his breath as the door opened, and Ty walked in. With the small space between the bed and the floor, Mitch was only able to see Ty's sneakers and the bottom of his jeans.

"Ian? You in...here?" Ty asked, his voice trailing off. Mitch watched as he bent over and picked something up from the ground. A white feather. Mitch felt like slamming his head through the floor as he realized the mistake he made. Oh god... those things must be everywhere...

"Where the hell are all of these things coming from...?" He heard Ty mumble to himself. Mitch heard Ty sigh loudly, before walking out of the room. Mitch assumed that Ty took the feather with him.

Mitch groaned as he scooted out from under the bed, his wings feeling sore. Mitch flinched as the door opened again, but sighed in relief as he realized that it was just Ian, who was holding Mitch's checkered hoodie in his hands. He also had a concerned look on his face.

"Dude, I just saw Ty walk out with one of your feathers..." He said as he tossed Mitch his hoodie. "Did he see you?"

Mitch shook his head as he slipped his hoodie on. "No, I crawled under the bed. I doubt he noticed me, or he would have said something. He was looking for you though."

Ian nodded. "Yeah, he was just asking if I knew where Jason had gone. One of the car's were missing."

Mitch sighed, heading toward the door. He was about to walk out when he turned to Ian. "Did you know where he went? He's been acting a bit different lately."

"I don't know Mitch... I don't know." Ian replied with a small sigh.

The conversation at dinner was about random things... like possible future challenge videos, the new Minecraft update, and Ty had brought up the feathers again, but that topic was only talked about briefly. But one person was missing from the table.

"Hey, does anyone know where Jason went off to? It's been like, five hundred hours!" Jerome said, before stuffing more of his hotdog into his mouth.

Everyone at the table either shook their heads, or laughed at Jerome's exaggerating, except for Adam. "He went off to a cemetery... It's about three hours from here."

"A graveyard?!?!? Why the heck would he want to go there?!?!?" Mitch said with a tone of surprise in his voice. "And why one three hours away?!?!?"

Everyone looked at Adam, who put his hands up defensively. "Whoa, guys, I don't know what he's doing there! We just have to wait..."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jason was silent as he walked between the graves in the cemetery, the sunset casting an orange light on the gloomy space. Jason continued until he came to a grave that lay at the edge of the cemetery, the gray stone chipped from age. Even though the name on the tombstone was nearly unreadable, Jason knew he would never forget where it laid.

Jason kneeled down, placing a hand on the tombstone. The messenger bag he was carrying on his shoulder drooped down, brushing along the ground. Jason's eyes wandered to the little statue that stood on top of the grave in front of the tombstone. It was a stone penguin, that had its flippers curled up, as if it were carrying an invisible object. Jason smiled, trying to fight back the tears in his blue eyes. "I remember... penguins were always your favorite..." He said, his voice trailing off as he felt a tear roll down his cheek.

Jason sighed, taking his hand off of the grave to open his messenger bag, pulling out a small box. He opened it, revealing a small bouquet of three flowers, all different shades of green. "Green was your favorite color too... it was the only thing you would ever wear."

Jason felt tears running freely down his cheeks as he gently placed the flowers in the stone penguin's flippers. The penguin now appeared to be holding them. Jason's smile disappeared as he bowed his head, like he was trying to hide his tears from the statue. "I d-don't know if you know t-this..."Jason said in a teary, wavering voice, "But it's been almost f-four years since you died... I promised you... or at least your b-body... that I would see you at least once a year....B-because you'll always be my best friend... It should have been me who died... not you..."

Jason was sobbing now, and the dirty blonde was thankful that there wasn't anyone else around to see it. He sat at the grave until the sun finally set, and the moon hung high in the sky. Jason looked up, before standing up, not bothering to wipe the tears from his face. "I-I got you another one, but I think this one will be your f-favorite." He said, digging again in his bag. He pulled out a small marble statue, that was shaped like an Emperor Penguin. The statue had small emeralds twinkling in its eyes. He put the penguin down, next to three more that were huddled around the big penguin.

"A-anyways... I've got to go now... I promise I'll come back next year...!" Jason said, as he stood up, brushing the dirt from his jeans. He started to walk away, but he swore he heard what sounded like a whisper come from the grave. He shrugged it off, and walked away, not hearing it whisper again.

"Until next time... my old friend..."
