Epilogue: Always and forever
Helena Walton POV
Closing the door to the twins' bedroom, I heard a noise coming from downstairs and checked my phone's clock. It was already a quarter past eight and Adam was having another late night. I knew he was busy lately, but I missed him terribly and couldn't help but feel a bit upset with him for staying late at the office. I made my way to the staircase wanting to welcome him and rolled my eyes when I saw Emily's school bag lying on the carpeted floor half open with a few of her items scattered around it. She must have left it there when Amanda came to pick her up for the weekend. I was going to lean down and pick everything up but stopped upon hearing my name.
"Helena? You there?" That's not Adam.
I rushed down the stairs and smiled at Mason who was hanging his suit jacket and loosening his tie.
"Mason" I gave him a small hug and messed up his hair just to annoy him. "I forgot you had a key and thought it was Adam."
"Well don't look so sad, I'm considered great company you know" he smirked rolling up the sleeves of his dress shirt.
I took a second to really look at my brother and smiled at how mature he got over the years. He looked more like dad especially while in a suit. Mason and I were always close, but lately, he's been spending a lot of time here. Sometimes he would come over in the middle of the night and crash on the couch claiming he missed seeing me in the morning. Being his older sister, I had to do something about it and actually redecorated one of the empty rooms to his liking and gave it to him. Adam loved Mason and he was even happier than Mason himself about the new room in the house.
"I'm not sad Mase, I just miss him." I shrugged and made my way to the kitchen "Want some wine?"
"Yeah sure." Mason followed me with his hands in his pockets "I know you miss him Helena, but remember that major client from Boston who contracted us? James Williams? Well, we had an important meeting with him that we couldn't postpone and James couldn't make it until six pm so it's not really Adam's fault. And trust me, he wasn't happy about it."
"Of course he wasn't" I rolled my eyes handing him his glass of wine "And of course he sent you to keep me company until his meeting is over." Mason took a sip before nodding "Well Mason it's not enough."
I gulped down my glass of wine and exited the kitchen making my way into the living room where I sat on my favorite armchair that overlooked the driveway. Lately, I've been sitting there a lot waiting for Adam to show up. Sometimes I would even fall asleep while waiting. I knew the business was booming and as CEO and owner of the firm he needed to be there a lot, but Mason was our partner, he could give him more projects and more responsibilities in order to spend more time with his family and at least make it home for dinner. But that was not an option, Adam as stubborn as always refused the idea as soon as I told him about it.
"Hey look at me," Mason took a seat next to me and held my hand in his "Don't be mad at him. He's doing his best to keep his and our dad's legacy to its peak. He's a good guy and I'm sure he hates doing this to you."
I wiped away the tear that just the corner of my eye and gave Mason a weak smile. "I know he's a good guy Mason or I wouldn't have married him. But he promised to put us first no matter what. He promised to always be home for dinner, he promised to never keep me waiting. He bailed on me twice this month for date night! I know he's doing his best for the company but he's disregarding my feelings and it's annoyingly upsetting!" I took a deep breath after my outburst and closed my eyes. "He's not late every night, but still, being late at least ten times a month is frustrating."
Mason pulled me into a comforting hug but kept silent. He knew I was right but he also knew Adam had no other choice and he respected him enough not to complicate things by telling me how right I am. Instead, he would always listen to me, reason with me but never would he say one tiny little bad word about Adam. Even as it sounds really odd, I loved that about him. I loved how much Mason respected Adam and cared for him. They are like brothers after all.
"Hey, do you remember Kat?" Mason asked out of the blue probably trying to take my mind off of Adam. When I raised my eyebrow signaling I had no clue who he was talking about, Mason grinned "Of course you don't. Katrina Johnson, from high school? Rings a bell?"
"Oh!! The cute shy girl you had a crush on!" I break out in a genuine smile "What about her?" I asked seeing a light blush appeared on his cheeks and grinned even wider "Spill the beans!"
"Katrina is still the same quiet and shy girl, well woman." He ran a hand through his already messed up hair "She works for Williams as an assistant even though she has a law degree" he sounded surprised as if Katrina was the first human being working in a field very different from what they studied. He stayed quiet for a while and a small smile appeared on his face. It was contagious because I was smiling as well. I loved seeing my brother all worked up like that, he was so cute.
"We talked a bit, she was surprised to find me there and we exchanged numbers..."
"Nice job Mase! I remember how much you tried to talk to her in high school, she would always run for the hills." I laughed shaking my head at the memory.
"It's nothing like that Helena. You know, after what Celine did to me I gave up on love and serious relationships. I only gave her my number because I may have mentioned we may need a lawyer..." he looked down at his shoes probably to hide his blush.
"I know don't remind me of that bitch! She's the reason you've turned into the biggest playboy of all times!" I chuckled "But does Katrina have any kind of experience? I mean you know Adam wouldn't hire someone with zero experience. Especially when it comes to the legal team."
"I know, but she could always start as an intern, maybe an assistant to one of the lawyers and if she's any good she'll become a lawyer herself." Before I could reply to that, he received a message and checked it out huffing before putting it back in his pocket. "Would you like to get some fresh air by the pool?"
Whatever he received must have upset him. I looked toward the stairs hesitating "The boys are asleep; I don't want them to wake up while I'm outside."
"Yeah... why don't you turn on the baby phone? Please I could really use some fresh air now."
I was tempted to decline his offer but Mason was always there for me, and I couldn't say no to him when he obviously needed to breathe a little. Fresh air could do me good as well. Without saying a word, I got up from my seating place and went upstairs to the twins' bedroom. Opening the door slowly, I quietly made my way inside and set up the baby phone. I slipped mine in my cardigan pocket and gave them both a light kiss on the cheek. They were a copy of Adam, from the chestnut brown hair to the olive green eyes and the dimples. Oh, how I love those dimples!
Reaching the bottom of the stairs, I found Mason waiting for me by the back door holding a wine bottle in one hand and two glasses in the other. He handed them to me "I gotta use the bathroom, take that outside I'll be out shortly. And don't start drinking without me!"
I chuckled closing the back door behind me before lazily walking to the pool area. I stopped dead on my feet as my eyes set on a beautiful man in a light grey suit whose smile made me see stars. Adam was standing behind a dinner table for two, with two candles in the middle and covered dishes. He had dimmed the lighting in the backyard in order to create a more romantic setting. My heart made a backflip as I saw him approaching me with a single white rose in his hand. I tried hard not to let my emotions get the best of me and start crying as all my worries were forgotten the second I set my eyes on him.
"I'm so sorry I'm late again baby... this time it was really out of my control." He closed the distance between us and instead of handing me the rose he caressed my cheek with his free hand "Please forgive me?"
I had already forgiven him seeing all the efforts he made to make it up to me. But I felt like playing him a little and not give in right away. Oh and Mason? He's so dead for playing me like a fool.
I took a step back and crossed my arms raising a perfectly waxed eyebrow at him. I could see the hurt in his eyes at my actions and it was killing me. "You promised to always be home for dinner, of course, I'm not an idiot and I know that shit happens and sometimes it's out of your hands, but for the past year you've been coming home late on more occasions than I can count."
"Lena..." he tried to reach for my hand but I pulled it away.
"What you did tonight is beautiful Adam, there's no denying that. But the thing is, it only makes up for tonight. So if you're doing this just to butter me up, you'll have to think harder and make bigger efforts."
Adam smiled ignoring my bitchy tone and my crisped stance as he approached me again and held me by the waist before I could put more distance between us.
"I know you well enough to know how to act when I mess up. Tonight is about working late, yes. But it's also a celebration of our fifth year anniversary".
He took me by surprise as I had completely forgotten it was today. With everything going on my mind, and the kids having a play date with their classmates, I had no time to think about the date. This was officially the first time I forgot an important event in our lives and the mixture of emotions I was feeling was indescribable. I looked up at him guiltily biting my lower lip knowing I could never pretend to have remembered.
Adam placed his hand on my belly and smiled warmly at me "We're also celebrating the fact we now know our baby's gender. I can't wait to see our little girl." I let out a quiet sob and wrapped my arms around his neck kissing him hard. I couldn't keep up the act when he was being so sweet and so romantic. Adam pulled away disappointing me as I already missed the contact.
"There's more... Today I had a meeting with Mason. And I've decided to split the responsibilities between the both of us, so I can make it home on time and take more days off."
"Oh Adam, you made me the happiest woman on earth, I love you so damn much! And I'm sorry I was so judging."
"You had every right to be... this past year I wasn't able to keep up to my promises and I feel so bad about it. But it's all over now, and that's another promise I will always keep."
Pulling out a small box from his pocket and opening it, he took out a simple necklace in the shape of the infinity symbol. It was covered by small diamond rocks on the front side, and before clasping it around my neck, Adam showed me our engraved initials in the back. I was at loss for words. He was perfect and knew exactly how to make me happy even when we would have just lived through a rough storm.
"Lena, I will love you until infinity runs out, which is never. Always and forever."
The end.

Her hands were fisted at her sides and she was glaring at him but all Nolan did was throw his head back and laugh heartedly.
"It was just a kiss! A bad one, to be honest, something I would never want to try again" he smirked "I felt nothing. Get over it." He stormed out of the classroom before she could say anything.
