chapter 18: could be a coincidence
Adam Yilmaz POV
"We need to talk Adam"
I sighed knowing if it wasn't important she wouldn't have come here in the first place. I looked at Lena who just stared at Amanda suspiciously, I loved the fact she was jealous.
"Lena, can we talk in your office please?"
"Of course baby" she pointed to her office that was facing us and made of glass.
"Could you please watch Emily for me while I talk to Adam?"
"Oh sure because I have nothing else to do." I could hear the sarcasm in her tone but Amanda failed to notice it or she just ignored it I wasn't sure.
"Thank you, you're a peach" she smiled at her and walked in front of me heading to Lena's office.
I took a deep breath and followed after her. Once inside I closed the door and noticed the curtains but I knew if I drew them down Lena would bite my head off. I chuckled inwardly at the image.
"So... baby huh?"
"Excuse me?"
"Your sister called you baby"
"Amanda you know she's not my sister"
"You just left Adam, why?"
"I have my reasons and I don't think they concern you. I mean you wanted me to be your boy toy and I couldn't do that so it was over" I leaned on the desk crossing my arms and watching her closely.
"But I tried reaching out Adam, so many times you just sent me to voicemail" she looked sad and maybe I shouldn't have done that but it was too late for the what ifs.
"Did you come here to reprimand me for the text messages I didn't answer? Or is there something serious you wanted to discuss with me? Because I do have a meeting to attend"
"You have always been so straightforward" she smiled and made her way toward me. "You want serious? I'll give you serious Adam." She turned around slowly and pointed to Lena and Emily. "See that beautiful girl sitting there? That is our daughter" she turned back to face me with a smile.
I burst in laughter shaking my head "that's a nice joke, it's a good one. Did Johnny D put you up to this?"
Her face fell "Do I look like I'm joking Adam? Look at me! You know I've always been very honest and straight to the point with you haven't I? Why would I lie about something like that?"
I walked to the curtain wall and looked at the little girl playing with my girlfriend. My girlfriend I like the sound of that. She was about four to five years old, red hair just like Amanda's fiery mane. She had a sprinkle of freckles on her nose and under her eyes. I smiled at how beautiful this girl was, her blue eyes were captivating.
I turned around looking at her suspiciously "If she's my daughter, why didn't you tell me from the start? You know I take responsibility for my actions"
"Remember when I left? I was gone for a month. I found out I was pregnant and went to visit my grandma in her farmhouse so I could make up my mind about what to do. Keep the baby? Have an abortion? Maybe give it up to adoption? I had no idea what to do. And I honestly didn't know it was yours. That's why I wanted us to be friends with benefits. I didn't want to put you through this when I wasn't even sure she's yours."
"Why are you sure she's mine now? What changed?"
"As she grew up I noticed things about her that really reminded me of you. First of all she's so talented, she keeps drawing those buildings and houses, and she uses the right scale too. She's so good with music instruments, and we both know she didn't take that from me"
"That's not enough to know she's mine"
"When she tells a white lie, a vein pops out just right here between the eyebrows, just like you"
"Still not enough, could be a coincidence"
"You don't eat broccoli right? You're allergic? Well so is she!"
"Amanda..." I was starting to feel exasperated "This isn't even hereditary so give me something credible!"
"She's got your strong personality, she can be very stubborn and when she tries to do something she never backs out as much as she fails, doesn't remind you of someone? I feel like I'm talking about you to be honest."
She flipped her hair to the other side and glanced at Emily. "Just like you, when she does something, she takes responsibility, not because I taught her because we both know I'm good at running from my problems."
I let out a heavy sigh and sat on the chair "Amanda this is still enough. Please try to understand me, we haven't spoken in years and you come know and tell me I have a daughter, how do you want me to take it?"
"Look, I'm not lying. Look at her, she has my hair, my freckles, but she has your mother's eyes! Look at her nose, she's a mixture of your mother and me. I don't know if it makes sense but I've looked at pictures of your mother when she was her age, the only difference is the hair"
"I don't see any resemblance to my mother Amanda"
Now she was the one losing patience as she squatted down so we were eye to eye.
"Listen carefully, this little girl is yours, whether you like it or not. I don't want anything from you Adam, I don't want you to be with me, and I'm not here so you could support us financially. I'm actually doing great with my antique business and I don't need your money. I only need one thing from you. Just one thing"
"What do you need?"
"She needs to know you are her father. She's been asking questions and I can't ignore it anymore. I was actually planning on flying to Istanbul next week just to ask you to meet her. She just wants to know her father. Don't deny her that privilege. I've grown up without my father and I don't want the same to happen to her."
"Paternity test"
"What?"
"I'll only meet her after we run a DNA test and it comes out to be positive."
"Okay"
"That's it? Okay?"
"Well after everything I said if you still don't believe me than okay, we'll do that, I'll take her tomorrow. You can come along if you want, or you could go the next day. It doesn't matter."
"We'll go together. We can meet at the child support office tomorrow by ten am."
"Deal" she smiled finally feeling content as she pecked my cheek and walked out.
I watched her take Emily who waved at Lena before they left. I didn't know how to feel, it was unexpected and I wasn't ready. How should I deal with it?
"I'm really curious about what you two talked in here for almost an hour, but dad is waiting. You'll tell me about it later." Lena said dragging me out of her office. We walked into Zachary's office and he quickly hugged me.
"I missed you son, feels great to have you back"
"Feels great to be back"
I smiled and patted his back before taking a seat. He kissed Lena's cheek and looked behind her before sitting with a frown.
"I thought I asked you two and Mason to be here, where is he?"
"He stayed back with Johnny D at Adam's lake house to clean it"
"Oh I see. I'll talk to him later than. Alright kids, as you know, business is booming, and I have to give my full attention to the Walton's hotels and Walton co. Since you're both very good architects, and Mason is graduating next month, I'm giving you three this company. Adam, you already own 52% of the company's shares, I own 48%. My shares will be split equally to you Helena and your brother Mason."
We both nodded. I didn't want to add anything I wasn't in the mood for it. And I already knew this would happen when I would come back. He always talked about me taking over the company.
"Adam, you're back for good right? I mean you two solved everything?"
"Yes I am" I smiled and took Lena's hand in mine "We're doing just fine"
"What's on your mind son?"
"I..." I sighed heavily "I have something I need to tell you both" I glanced at Lena who squeezed my hand with a smile. I knew she was dying to know what Amanda and I talked about but I wasn't sure how well she'd take it.
"Okay Adam, tell us. What's on your mind?"
"Amanda, an ex of mine just came to talk to me. Apparently, we have... we have a daughter" Lena pulled her hand out of mine and glared at me.
"Did you believe her? Does the girl look like you? Did you do the math? How old is she?"
"She's four to five years old so yeah... her age is correct. She claims she looks a lot like my mother but I didn't see it to be honest."
"What are you going to do about it?"
"I asked her for a paternity test. We're going tomorrow."
"Good, good. But if she is your daughter you know what you'll have to do right?"
"I'll take responsibility, and I'll be present in her life"
"I'm so proud of the man you've become son" Zachary smiled and came over to give me another hug. He was happy and all but I sneaked a peak at Lena and saw her glaring out of the window. She wasn't happy that's for sure.
We talked with Zachary for another half an hour. He told us we would be on our own starting next week. Helena was fidgety and wanted nothing but to leave. So we excused ourselves and left the building. She was walking silently beside me, no more jokes, no more smiles or loving stares. It was killing me.
"Lena? You're not mad are you?"
"Could you please take me to my parent's house?"
I frowned "Weren't we going to have lunch at Lou's?"
"We were yes but I really need to see my mom Adam. Please, we can do that another day. I'm not feeling well"
"Baby please talk to me"
"Adam please!"
I drove silently knowing she didn't feel good about me having a daughter. But nothing was certain yet, and even if Emily is my daughter, it shouldn't be an issue, it shouldn't drive us apart. Many thoughts raced through my mind. I parked the car in the drive way and was about to climb out of the car when she stopped me.
"You can come back another time. I need time alone with my mother." She climbed out and left me in the car using her key to go inside.
