chapter 47

It was around 6pm as Jasmine got back home. After her karate classes finished by 1pm, she spent the rest of her day at a small cafe, drinking black coffee and watching YouTube videos.

The evening breeze blew on her hair as she stepped out from the taxi and paid the driver. He gave Jasmine her change and drove off.
Three teenage boys on their bicycle rode passed her. One of them with blonde hair looked at her and gave her a sexy wink. She arched her brows, watching the blonde as he rode off and she let out a chuckle.

'Fool.'

She shook her head, putting her change in her pocket.  She had her earpiece plugged to her ears as "Better now" by post Malone played from her phone.

Her eyes darted across the street and she noticed a black SUV behind a red sedan, parked across her apartment building. Immediately, she remembered the black SUV that she thought was following her yesterday.
Her heart beat quickened and she swallowed hard, a shiver running down her spine as she stared at the car with unwavering eyes.

The black SUV roared to life and drove off slowly. Holding her phone, she took pictures of the licence number, keeping her eyes on the car till it was out of sight.

'What the fuck was that?'

Raking a hand into her hair, she bit the inside of her lip as questions pondered in her mind, her eyes darting across the street and she could feel her pulse racing.
This was the second time she was noticing the car and it sure wasn't just a mere coincidence to her. Someone was watching her and now the person knew where she lived.

Fear gripped her as she realized that she was being watched, but by who? she woundered. She didn't care whether she was overreacting or being paranoid but she needed to report the case to the police. With the picture in her phone, she can be able to know who was watching her. She needed to be more careful and alert and cautious.

She sighed deeply and swung her duffel bag over her shoulder and climbed the stairs to her apartment.

Getting to her flat, she brought out her keys from her jean's pocket and unlocked the door. She walked inside and took off her sneakers, closing the door quietly.

The house felt empty as she looked around and saw no one in the living room. Going to her room, she could hear footsteps from inside and she knew that Christine was back.

A long sigh escaped her lips and she rubbed her temple gently.  She had planned on taking a shower and preparing dinner before talking to Christine about what happened last night. But since Christine was already home, she would have to talk to her first. She had to confront Christine about the drugs she found and needed to clear the doubt in her mind.

"Okay, let's do this." She reached for the door knob and twisted it as she opened the door. Walking in slowly, she closed the door behind her. She saw Christine putting a black hoodie and jeans inside her big backpack.

"What are you doing?" Jasmine asked, walking towards Christine as she pulled out the earpiece and brought out her phone, pausing the music.

Christine didn't bother to look at Jasmine as she zipped her backpack shut.

"Christine." Jasmine called her.

"What?" Christine growled, placing the backpack on the bed, an annoyed frown on her face.

Jasmine let out a scoff, looking at Christine in disbelief. "So you're gonna start off with that tone huh!"

Christine let out a long sigh, putting her hands in her hoodie's pocket. "What do you want?" she asked using a harsh tone.

"What do I want?" Jasmine placed a finger on her chest as she let out a hysterical laugh, dropping her duffel bag on the floor. "She actually asked me what I want."

Christine rolled her eyes, saying nothing.

"What's with the clothes in the bag Christine?" Jasmine asked in a serious tone.

Christine sighed. "I'm going for a pool party and won't be back till Friday,"
She said, her expression blank as she gave Jasmine a direct and challenging gaze.

"A pool party? What kind of pool party lasts for three fucking days?" Jasmine questioned, tossing her phone on the bed as she folded her arms, staring hard at Christine.

"A college pool party." Christine replied in a nonchalant tone.

"And what would you be doing there?..No wait let me guess, you probably would be drinking, smoking and getting wasted for three fucking days," Jasmine said, already feeling the anger building up inside her.

"Exactly." Christine said bluntly with a shrug and cringed her nose.

"You gotta be kidding me!" Jasmine placed a palm on her forehead, letting out slow breaths through her mouth.
Christine stood there, hands in her pocket and said nothing.

"You are so unbelievable Christine," Jasmine said in an angry tone. "What is fucking wrong with you? Yesterday I found out you've been stashing weed in this house and now you're telling me you're off to a party and won't be back till Friday. What is wrong with you?"

"EVERYTHING!" Christine shouted, pulling out her hands out from her pocket and tugged at her hair hard.
"Everything is fucking wrong with me and the sooner I get the fuck out of here, you don't have to bother me with your stupid questions."

Jasmine shuddered, letting out a heavy sigh. She bit the inside of her lip and clenched her right fist hard, giving Christine a hard stare. "Why Christine?" Her voice was small and whispery. "Why are you doing this to yourself?"

Christine inhaled sharply. "For the millionth time Jasmine, this is my life and this is how I wanna live it."

"But why? Why are you slowly killing yourself with this reckless life of yours? You don't have to live this way Christine. There is a better way than this," Jasmine said in a soft tone, walking closer to Christine and placed a hand on Christine's shoulder.

"There is no better way and I've been dead a long time ago Jasmine," Christine said coldly, pushing Jasmine's hand off her shoulder and added. "You just don't wanna accept it."

Jasmine shook her head, refusing to believe Christine's words.  "So you're just gonna throw your life away? For heaven's sake Christine, you have a bright future ahead of you why can't you see it?"

Christain exhaled sharply."You just don't get it Jasmine," she said through gritted teeth as she clenched her fist hard, her nails digging into her flesh as she felt a slight pain.  "I am stuck in the darkness forever and there is no redemption for me."

"No,no." Jasmine cried out in a loud tone, grabbing Christine on her shoulders and shook her roughly. "Stop this Christine, please stop. Stop blaming yourself over their death. It wasn't your fault okay, it wasn't. Stop blaming yourself and living in agony and depression because it won't bring them back. They are gone Christine, they are gone."

"AND ITS BECAUSE OF ME!" Christine said in a loud angry tone, pushing Jasmine away from her roughly.

Jasmine stumbled back in shock, placing a hand over her chest as she steadied herself on the floor and looked at her Christine with pain in her eyes.

"It's because of me they're gone Jasmine." Christine choked on her tears, hitting her chest with her fist as tears rolled down her cheeks. Her eyes was filled with an agony of regret. "Don't you get it? I fucking killed them. They're gone because of me."

Jasmine said nothing, swallowing the big lump in her throat, not taking her eyes off Christine. Her heart cried out in pain as she watched her only sister slipping away from her. "Christine you..."

"Don't." Christine cut her off harshly.
"Nothing you say is gonna change anything Jasmine. We've been at this for years so just give it up."
Christine said with a determined look on her face, not wanting to talk about the issue again.

Jasmine could never give up. She could never stop trying to reach out to Christine and bring her out from the darkness. She loved Christine deeply and it ached her heart to see her sister get lost in a void of deep depression.
But whenever she reaches out to Christine and she gets pushed away, the pain in her heart turns to rage. She would get angry that christine was still blaming herself and had no desire to forgive herself and forget about the past. She would get angry that christine kept on living her reckless life and still couldn't stop doing drugs.

Jasmine clenched both fist hard, glaring at Christine with angry blue eyes. "So this is how you wanna go about living your life Christine?" She asked, her fingers clenched as she waited tensely for Christine's answer.

Christine wiped her tears with the sleeve of her hoodie, grabbed her backpack and swung it over her shoulder not saying a word as she moved to the small desk and grabbed her phone.

Seeing that christine wasn't going to say a word to her, Jasmine shuddered, her heart thumping hard in her chest, sending blood hurtling through her veins. "Fine. If this is how you wanna live your life go ahead, i don't care anymore. You can go about and keep getting into fights, going to useless parties and sticking your ass up with drugs and alcohol, I don't fucking care," Jasmine said to Christine in an angry tone.

"Like you ever cared." Christine shot back at Jasmine in a harsh tone.

"What?" Jasmine was bewildered by Christine's words. She couldn't believe Christine threw those hateful words at her. She felt enraged and couldn't hold it back anymore. "Get out! Get out of my house. I don't wanna see you anymore, get out!" She shouted furiously at Christine pointing towards the door.

"Yeah, I'm leaving. I don't even wanna stay in this fucking house anyway." Christine shouted back at Jasmine, walking towards the door.

"You ungrateful bitch! GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE. GET OUT."

Christine said nothing back as she opened the door and walked out, slamming the door hard behind her.

Chest heaving heavily, Jasmine stood there, staring at the door as the hot tears flowed from her eyes.
She just watched her sister walk out from from her life and it was because of her anger. She blamed herself as she gripped the neck of her sweater, her tears flowing uncontrollably as she sat down slowly on the floor.
Putting her hands over her head, she let out a painful cry as she knew she had lost her sister completely.
